Al-Kadhimi: we will pursue the killers |
2021-11-03 |
[SHAFAQ] The Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, commended the stance of the Supreme Judicial Council on the case of the manslaughter of Journalist Ahmed Abdul-Samad and the photographer Safaa Ghali. In a speech he delivered during the cabinet meeting earlier today, Tuesday, "since the establishment of our government, we were frank to our people; the killers of the activists, media professionals, and innocent people will not escape punishment and the fist of law." Al-Kadhimi said that his government has fulfilled the promises it made to the people, "particularly the election, Justice, and economic reforms." "We pursued the groups that were involved in the Murders. We successfully apprehended the killers of Hisham al-Hashemi and Ahmed Abdul-Samad, and we will continue to pursue whoever is involved in the Iraqi bloodshed." "We endorse the Judiciary's independence. We do not seek vengeance, we only want justice," he concluded. Iraq's supreme court has sentenced a man to death by hanging for the killing of two prominent Iraqi journalists last year, known for their coverage of anti-government protests in the southern city of Basra. Ahmed Abdul Samad, a Dijlah TV news hound, and Safaa Ghali, his cameraman, were found shot and killed in a car parked near a cop shoppe on January 10, 2020. Their deaths were part of a wave of assassinations against activists and journalists covering the protest movement that erupted in late October 2019. For months, tens of thousands of protesters in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad and the predominantly Shiite southern provinces had taken to the streets to rally against endemic corruption and call for reforms. Over 600 people died as security forces used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse crowds. The movement eventually petered out, in part because of the government’s heavy-handed response and the worsening coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ![]() pandemic. Protesters have largely blamed Iran-backed militia groups for carrying out killings that specifically targeted activists and journalists. The court in Basra said the man convicted in the killing of the two journalists confessed to his crimes. It said he killed them with the aim of "destabilizing security and stability to achieve terrorist goals." The court provided no details about the man’s identity or affiliation with any Death Eater or other groups. The case is now with a higher court, which can either confirm the death penalty ![]() Mohammed Samad, the brother of the slain news hound, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named over the phone that he blames four people for the killing "but only one was brought to court." He identified the convicted killer as Hamza Kadhim al-Aidani, "a police officer who had worked at the same court that sentenced him today." "Our happiness will be complete when their leader is brought to trial as he is currently on the run," he added. |

Hurriyat for resolution of Kashmir dispute to ensure peace in region |
2020-11-16 |
[DAILYTIMES.PK] In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir![]() Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there.... , Hurriyat leaders and organizations expressing serious concern over the escalating tension between Pakistain and India on the Line of Control have called for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute for ensuring durable peace in South Asia. The Hurriyat forum led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement in Srinagar expressed deep grief over the repeated escalation on the LoC that has resulted in the loss of human lives and property. It reiterated its appeal to both India and Pakistain to resolve the Kashmir dispute through peaceful means for the sake of humanity and millions of humans living in the region. Hurriyat leaders and organizations including Zamruda Habib, Abdul Samad Inqilabi, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and Tehrik-e-Wahdat-e-Islami in their statements issued in Srinagar strongly condemned the unprovoked shelling by Indian Army along the LoC. They appealed to the UN to take practical measures for settling the Kashmir dispute to prevent further bloodshed. Meanwhile, ...back at the desert island, Bert climbed the cocoanut tree, looking for ships. He saw none. He looked in the other direction and saw Irene, vigorously scrubbing her backside... the All Parties Hurriyat Conference General Secretary, Molvi Bashir Ahmed, in a statement issued in Srinagar said that Indian Army in gross violation of the international laws was refusing to hand over dead bodies of the Kashmiri martyred youth to their families and secretly burying them in unmarked graves at far-off places in IIOJK. He said India is afraid of massive participation of people in deaders’ funerals as it fears that the funerals of martyred youth further incite anti-India sentiments in the occupied territory. |

Iraq assassins in Basra murder female activist and hunt down protesters |
2020-08-20 |
![]() Iraqi protesters who have been fighting in the streets for almost a year against what they say is government neglect and corruption are used to being threatened. They’ve already seen hundreds of their friends attacked and some hunted down and shot by pro-government militias. On August 18, the protesters mourned once again, a young female activist, a doctor, who was shot in Basra. Fellow Iraqis say that the country "lost a treasure today." People know the fear. Those who go to the squares to protest in Baghdad or southern Iraq report receiving threats. They get the threats from friends, from family, or phone calls or other means. It is made known to them: If you continue down this path you will be harmed. And they have been kidnapped, killed, assassinated, and hunted down. This kind of mafia-like pressure campaign is directed by militias, many of which are pro-Iranian. The militias have names such as Soraya Khorasani, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Kataib Hezbollah, the Badr Organization, Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba. Not all of them are implicated in the liquidations. Some specialize in different areas of exerting control and threats. Dr. Riham Yaqoub was an activist, a sports expert and a nutritionist. She was assassinated in Basra, the large southern Iraqi city near the border with Kuwait, on Wednesday, according to numerous reports. Irfaa Sawtak published a video of her doing sports training. Others say she was young, ambitious and "full of hope and life." Her murder is one of many recent liquidations in southern Iraq. It comes as Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi is in Washington for high level meetings. Rocket fire almost daily has targeted US forces at bases, in Baghdad and near the airport. The message is clear: There is impunity to attack whoever the militias want. It is slightly over a month since assassins in Baghdad murdered Husham al-Hashimi, a well-known commentator on Iraqi affairs. He was killed at his house in July. Activists are now being murdered almost daily in Basra by a team of assassins. Of five targeted, two have died, notes journalist Lawk Ghafuri. It was only a week since another activist was killed named Tahseen al-Shahmani. Another woman named Ludia Remon also survived an attack. Many female activists have been targeted by the assassins. The Prime Minister had apparently replaced the head of the Basra police the same day as the recent liquidation. Journalists are also being targeted for liquidation. In Basra Abdul Samad was shot in January along with another journalist named Safaa Ghali. The impunity of liquidations illustrates how militias, many affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, are working slowly and systematically to silence any dissent. This is especially true for targeting young people and women. The goal is to preserve the system that arose in Iraq in the last decade, a rule that is increasingly beholden to militias, holy mans, and the politics of the gun. Iraq’s interior minister orders investigation into Basra journalist killings
2020-01-13 | |
[Rudaw] Iraq’s interior minister has ordered an investigation into the killing of two Iraqi journalists covering anti-government protests on Friday, while an Iraqi media watchdog has said 2019 saw "unprecedented" media repression due to protest coverage. Minister of Interior al-Yasseri "directed the dispatch of a high-level team headed by the Ministry’s undersecretary for police affairs and a number of officers" to investigate the killing of journalists Ahmed Abdul Samad and his cameraman Safaa al-Ghali, a Sunday ministry statement read. The Minister "ordered that the team not return until the completion of investigations and the uncovering of the perpetrators."
Iraqi protesters have been on the streets since October 1, 2019, to demand an overhaul of Iraq’s system and a change of the post-Iraq war political class. They have been met with deadly violence, including the fire of live rounds and military-grade tear gas. As of December, more than 511 protesters and security forces members have been killed, and about 17,000 maimed. According to an IHCHR report sent to Rudaw English via WhatsApp in December 2019, a total of 68 protesters and activists have been kidnapped by unknown gangs due to their involvement in the movement. Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), known in Arabic as Hashd al-Shaabi, is largely considered responsible for the killing of protesters and voices of dissent. Journalists have been among the most targeted by the deadly repression. The National Association of Journalists in Iraq released its report for 2019 on Sunday ‐ titling it "A Disastrous Year for Press in Iraq." The killing of three journalists was among the violence enacted on members of the Iraqi press last year, according to the report. The year "2019 witnessed huge violations against Iraqi journalists and media organizations," the Association said. "However, a clean conscience makes a soft pillow... what distinguishes 2019 with regard to journalistic work in Iraq is the unprecedented repression of journalists and media institutions as a result of their coverage of the popular protests that started in the beginning of October of the same year," according to the press watchdog report. "The violations varied between assault and detention during field coverage, prevention and harassment, leading to intimidation and threats of physical liquidation and prosecution," it added. Through a volunteer-run monitoring team of journalists, the Association found 188 of these violations had taken place in 2019. They were conducted by official security services, and by political parties and gangs ‐ both of which went unnamed by report.
