He is accused of publishing a grisly photo in August 2014 in which he can be seen posing with a severed head in the city of Raqqa, northern Syria. Prosecutors, who are calling for a nine-year jail sentence, accused him of running "online scams" with two friends to fund "terrorist activities". He was arrested in April 2020 in the southern town of Almería, Spain, several days after arriving by boat from Algeria. Abdul Bari, originally from Maida Vale in London, was a British-Egyptian national but he was stripped of his UK citizenship because of his links to ISIS. However, today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday... he denied all the charges against him, saying it was not him in the photo with the severed head and claiming that he does not agree with ISIS and al-Qaeda ideology. ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS. |
