2007-10-24
Ms Bhutto, in her letter to Gen Musharraf of October 16 before she returned to Pakistan, had named five former and serving officials who should be investigated in the event that she was assassinated on her return to Pakistan.

These include IB chief Ijaz Shah, Mr Sharif’s former top spook Imtiaz Billa, former ISI chief Hameed Gul, special prosecutor for NAB Waseem Afzal and Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim. One of the six “suspicious” cell numbers cited in her letter led to several arrests, according to the intelligence sources.

Benazir involved in UN oil-for-food scam: NAB
2006-04-07
ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday claimed to have found evidence that former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was involved in the United Nations oil-for-food scandal in Iraq. Bhutto gave a $2 million commission to the defunct regime of Saddam Hussein to win contracts worth $115 million through two Sharjah-based companies she registered in 2000 and 2001, Hassan Waseem Afzal, NAB deputy chairman, told reporters here. He also released documents suggesting Bhutto’s connections with international companies involved in the scam and facing prosecution in their countries.

He said NAB began suspecting Bhutto’s involvement in the scam after the UN inquiry report into the scandal. He said that Petroline FZC, a Sharjah-based company involved in the scam, is owned by Bhutto and her aides Rehman Malik, former FIA additional director, and Hassan Ali Jaffery, her nephew. “The Pakistan government will prosecute these three Pakistanis under UN guidelines.” The second company, Tempo Global Gains FZC, is owned by Bhutto and her three children. “This company appears to be the ultimate destination of all money siphoned off by Benazir and her aides,” he said, adding NAB would ask the UAE government to freeze these companies’ accounts.

Afzal said that a report sent by Spanish authorities investigating Bhutto’s bank accounts in Spain showed that she had received money from banks in Switzerland, the UK and US and companies involved in the oil-for-food scam. NAB would also ask Washington freeze Bhutto’s accounts in the City National Bank, Florida, he added.

Police arrest three Al-Qaeda suspects in Southwestern Pakistan
2005-07-24
Police Saturday in crackdown on Islamic hardliners arrested three Al-Qaeda linked militants and recovered hate literature in Southwestern Baluchistan province, said a police official. The militants were arrested in Quetta, the provincial capital, senior city police officer (SP), Qazi Wahid, said. He said police recovered 35 books containing Al-Qaeda linked literature. He said they have been identified as Muhammad Akbar Baghlani, Fazl-e-Haq, and Syed Iqbal.
Their moms must be very proud.
SP Qazi denied their Pakistani nationality but said forces are investigating them to determine their nationality.
"Pakis? Don't be silly. They're....something else."
However, an intelligence source told KUNA that the arrested are militants of some banned outlet.
'Banned' being code for alive and well and cranking out boomers on schedule.
The source declined to give further details. In a week long crackdown, launched on the directives of President Musharraf in the aftermath of London bombings, police and law-enforcement agencies have rounded up over 450 clerics, members of outlawed militant groups and students of religious seminaries. Hasan Waseem Afzal, Home Secretary of Punjab, at a news conference in Lahore said that around 105 men have been arrested in the province since the crackdown began. He said that 90 of them have been sent into police custody, adding that they would be tried under anti-terrorist act. He said those detained are members of Sipah-e-Sahaba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Jhangavi militant groups.

Pak turban roundup continues
2005-07-23
Lahore: The detained members of 14 banned religious and militant organisations will be tried under Section 11 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, Punjab Home Secretary Hasan Waseem Afzal told Daily Times. He said that the department had issued a notification in this regard on Friday. The banned organisations include Tehrik-e-Islami (former Tehrik-e-Jafferia), Millat Islamia (Sipah-e-Sahaba), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Jaish Muhammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Harkat-ul-Ansar, Sipah-e-Muhammad, Hizb-ul-Tehrir al Wilayah Islamia, Shariat-e-Muhammad, Harkat-ul-Mujihdeen and Tehrik-al-Furqan. Afzal said that the members of the 14 banned outfits and religious groups would be tried in anti-terrorism courts. “The government is committed to implementing an anti-terrorism and anti-sectarianism policy. Nobody will be spared.”

Meanwhile, security agencies continued to crack down on the militants and activists of banned religious organisations on Friday. But only five men were arrested from all over Punjab. A local Sipah-e-Sahaba leader from Khushab and a man hawking banned Al Rasheed Trust’s weekly publication Zarbe-e-Momin were amongst the detainees. The hawker, Riaz, was arrested from Anarkali where he was selling the publication. The police did not confirm his arrest. The home secretary said that 105 people had been arrested till Friday evening in the crackdown. On Thursday, he told the media that around 100 people were arrested. About 90 detainees were sent to jail for 90 days under Section 188 and 3 MPO.

Shahzad Mailk reports from Islamabad: Islamabad Capital Police registered a case against local religious leaders Dr Abdur Rashid Ghazi, Maulana Abdul Aziz and Qari Sohail Abbasi under Section 6/7 of Anti Terrorism Act. Aabpara Police Station registered a first information report against the religious leaders because protesters burned a traffic police sergeant’s motorbike and stoned a police checkpoint and nearby vehicles, during a protest led by them. The gathering was protesting against the government’s recent raids on seminaries and the arrest of the various religious leaders.

Staff Report adds from Karachi: Dozens of imams were arrested for violating the Loudspeaker Act during Friday sermons here. Police said imams in Kharadar, Mithadar, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, North Nazimabad, Mubina Town, Saeedabad and other areas had been arrested for violating the Act. Cases were registered against Allama Kokab Noorani Okarvi (Masjid Gulzar-e-Habib) and Maulana Abdul Mannan (Jamia Masjid Madina), but they were not arrested. Cases were registered against Maulvi Hamadullah (Madina Masjid), Maulana Khizer Muhammad (Akhund Masjid), Hazrat Bilal Shah (Allahwali Masjid), Qari Hafiz Nazir Ahmed Qadri (Jama Masjid Bilal), Saeed Ahmed (Masjid Hasni Sabri Daud Goth), Maulvi Sher Ahmed (Masjid Taif), Maulana Shujauddin (Jamia Masjid Muslim) and Muhammad Aslam (Makki Masjid) and they were arrested.

Agencies add: Pakistani security forces arrested nearly 100 more suspected militants overnight, following Musharraf’s promise to the nation and the international community that he would tighten the leash on Islamic schools to stamp out militancy and hate-propaganda. Within hours of a televised address to the nation on Thursday, security forces raided Islamic schools or seminaries. “Approximately 90 more suspected militants have been arrested in overnight raids across the country, and the number of people in ‘preventive detention’ is more than 300 now,” said an Interior Ministry official monitoring the campaign.

Raids targeted shops selling “hate material”, and both police and intelligence agencies were instructed to arrest anyone inciting violence during sermons at Friday prayers, the official said. Nine of the activists were arrested by the Lahore and Faisalabad police for possessing objectionable literature, audiocassettes and CDs. According to a Punjab Police spokesman, the Lahore police arrested three activists and registered three cases at the Anarkali, Shadman and Ichhra police stations. Maulana Malik Khaleel Chinoiti, the local president of PML’s religious section and the son of famous religious scholar Maulana Manzoor Ahmad Chinioti, Maulana Illyas Chinoiti, were also arrested. The arrests of the two and the government’s action against its own party officials caused quite a stir.

MMA walks out to protest 'raids to arrest parliamentary chief'
2005-04-07
Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) legislators walked out of the house on Wednesday to protest police raids for the arrest of Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar, the MMA's parliamentary chief, and the speaker's attitude.
"Yeah! He got a attitude! We're leavin'!"
Arshad Mehmood Bagoo, Dr Waseem Afzal, Muhammad Waqas and women legislators of the alliance tried to raise one point of order after the other as soon as proceedings got underway. Bagoo claimed that police were raiding to arrest Gujjar, who had not committed any crime. Raja Basharat, Punjab law minister, said that the police were doing no such thing, but Bagoo remained unconvinced and kept shouting otherwise. Chaudhry Muhammad Afzal Sahi, Punjab Assembly speaker, stopped Bagoo from discussing the topic further.
"My Gawd, Mister Speaker! You shot him!"
The MMA's legislators tried to persuade the speaker to give them the floor but he refused.
"Yeah! And I'll do the same to anybody that tries to grab the floor!"
They got angry and walked out of the house. After a scheduled prayer break, MMA legislators Dr Waseem Akhtar and a few women came back to participate in the rest of the proceedings.

Security alert in Punjab
2005-01-09
Following an attack on Agha Ziauddin, prominent Shia community leader and imam of the main Gilgit mosque, that left him seriously injured and his two bodyguards dead, law enforcement agencies were on high alert throughout the Punjab province on Saturday. Punjab Home Secretary Hassan Waseem Afzal told Daily Times that the alert was issued to avoid violence similar to that in Gilgit city. Orders for the alert were issued late on Saturday, he added. However, sources said orders for the alert were issued in light of the federal government's instructions that the terrorists from the tribal areas had entered the provinces and could threaten the law and order there. "Information that terrorists are planning to kidnap a VIP has been received. In fact, law enforcement agencies are on alert throughout Pakistan," sources added. The district nazims, district police officers, senior superintendents of police and intelligence agencies have been asked to monitor the situation in their respective areas.
