Report: UN Peacekeepers Fleeing From Syria To Israel
2014-08-31
[Ynet] Al-Jazeera
... an Arab news network headquartered in Qatar, notorious for carrying al-Qaeda press releases. The name means the Peninsula, as in the Arabian Peninsula. In recent years it has settled in to become slightly less biased than MSNBC, in about the same category as BBC or CBS...
network reports that UNDOF soldiers in southern Syria abandoning posts, fleeing to Israeli side. Meanwhile Phillipine official says Syrian rebels who seized 43 Fijian United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
peacekeepers attacked Filipino troops in Golan Heights.

The Al-Jazeera network reported Saturday that members of the UN Disengagement Observer Force stationed in Daraa in southern Syria are abandoning their posts and fleeing to the Israeli side of the Golan Heights.

In another report published simultaneously, Philippine officials said Syrian rebels holding dozens of Fijian UN peacekeepers hostage attacked Filipino troops in the Golan Heights on Saturday.

Philippine peacekeepers at one UN encampment were attacked, but those at another were "extricated," Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told news hounds in a series of text messages, adding that the attack started early Saturday Syrian time.

Philippine military front man Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala told news hounds, "There is an ongoing firefight, but all Filipinos are safe."

The UN did not say whether the 44 Fijian soldiers had been released, but a statement suggested progress was being made in negotiations to secure their freedom.

"The United Nations has received assurances from credible sources that 44 peacekeepers from UNDOF who were taken from their position... are safe and in good health," said a statement from the front man.

"UNDOF has not yet had direct contact with the peacekeepers."

There were 40 Filipino troops in the encampment that came under attack, and 35 in the second, according to the Philippine military.

The Syrian rebels seized 44 Fijian peacekeepers on Thursday. The rebels then demanded that the 75 Filipinos manning two separate UN encampments 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) apart surrender their weapons, but they refused.

The situation of the peacekeepers, whose mission monitors a 1974 disengagement accord between Syria and Israel, remains "very, very fluid," the UN secretary-general's front man, Stephane Dujarric, told news hounds Friday at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

The UN said in a statement that it had received assurances from credible sources that the Fijian peacekeepers "are safe and in good health."

The statement added that they had been informed "the intention behind holding the peacekeepers was to remove them from an active battlefield to a safe area for their own protection."

In Australia on Saturday, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop condemned the detention of the Fijian peacekeepers and called for their release.

"As a member of the UN Security Council, Australia demands the unconditional and immediate release of all the detained United Nations peacekeepers," Bishop said in a statement.

Bishop said she telephoned Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola to express Australia's strong support, including Australia's intelligence resources.

Bishop also said she assured them that Australia will use its position on the UN Security Council to maintain focus on this issue.

UN Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
also has condemned the detention of the Fijians and called for their immediate release.

PM: Negotiations Underway to Free Fijian Peacekeepers
2014-08-30
[AnNahar] Talks were underway Friday to release 43 Fijian peacekeepers taken hostage by Syrian rebels in the Golan Heights, the Pacific nation's Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said.

Bainimarama said the peacekeepers were believed to be safe and his government was working closely with the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
to secure their release.

"The latest information we have is that they are safe and I can say now that the negotiations for their release have already begun," he said in a statement.

"I want to assure the families of the soldiers we are doing everything possible to secure their safe return."

Bainimarama said Fiji was "united as a nation in praying for their safe return".

"These men are peacekeepers, not combatants in the Syrian conflict, and there is no need for them to be detained," he said.

The Fijians, who were on duty in a U.N.-patrolled zone, were taken hostage by about 150 Syrian rebels on Thursday.

About 75 Philippine peacekeepers who refused to surrender were involved in a tense standoff with gangs in the same area, Philippine officials said.

Fiji officer jailed over coup plot

[Pak Daily Times] A former army chief convicted of plotting a coup against Fiji's military regime was jugged
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for five years Wednesday, with a judge labelling his actions "treasonous and mutinous", reports said.

Former Land Force commander Pita Driti was found guilty last month of leading a 2010 plot to overthrow military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama and assassinate Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. While the coup never eventuated, High Court judge Paul Madigan said Driti had failed to show the loyalty and discipline expected of the Pacific nation's armed forces, the Fijilive news website reported. "It is a matter of surprise and sadness that at your age and with your illustrious career behind you that you should come to be involved in this seditious undertaking," Madigan said. He described the plot as "treasonous and mutinous". "Hence the the severity of this particular crime." The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation said Driti was sentenced to five years jail, with a four-year non-parole period. Prosecution witness Lieutenant-Colonel Manasa Tagicakibau told the court last month that Driti approached him in October 2010 seeking support for a plan to oust Bainimarama, who seized power himself in a 2006 coup.

US announces sanctions against Fiji coup leaders
2006-12-20
WASHINGTON - The United States suspended financial aid and weapons sales to Fiji on Tuesday and imposed travel bans on army commanders and other officials involved in a December 5 military coup against the Pacific nation’s elected government, the State Department announced. The sanctions cover around 2.5 million dollars in primarily military-related aid and bar new economic assistance programs to Fiji, the State Department said in a statement.

Under the measures, Washington suspended deliveries and sales of ”lethal military equipment” to Fiji and banned the Fiji military from US-sponsored military exercises or conferences. It also imposed visa sanctions on senior military officers and members of the army-installed interim government, barring them from visiting the United States.

In its statement, the US reiterated its condemnation of the coup led by army commander Voreqe Bainimarama and called on the military chief “to abandon his extra-judicial activities, withdraw completely from politics and restore Fiji’s legitimate democratically elected government”.

Fiji military to move against govt early Monday
2006-12-03
This has to be the most telegraphed coup in history. Aren't these supposed to be done in secret?
SUVA - Fiji’s military chief is likely to carry out his threat to overthrow the government early Monday, a report quoted government and military sources as saying on Sunday. The Fiji Sunday Post quoted the sources as saying the capital Suva was expected to be sealed by military roadblocks at the start of the operation from 3:00 am Monday.

Speculation about when military commander, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, would move has mounted since midday Friday when a deadline passed for the government to accede to a series of demands or face the country’s fourth coup in two decades.

The Sunday Post said under the plan, the government would be dismissed, parliament dissolved and an interim administration installed. The interim government was believed to include some current legislators, former politicians, indigenous chiefs and soldiers.

Roadblocks would be installed on the main roads in and out of the capital. The newspaper added, however, that other scenarios could be under consideration.

Bainimarama has said little about his plans, other than saying he planned to install an interim government. Radio New Zealand quoted him Saturday saying he had not finalised his plans but intended to act within the next week.

Fiji faces coup within two weeks: Australian FM
2006-11-24
SYDNEY - Australia’s Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said there is ‘clear evidence’ that Fiji’s maverick military chief is planning to stage a coup in the island nation within two weeks.

‘There is clear evidence he is planning a coup in the next couple of weeks,’ Downer told ABC television’s Lateline programme late Thursday, referring to commander Voreqe Bainimarama. ‘He made a public statement along those lines and we are particularly concerned about that.’

Bainimarama earlier this week gave the government two weeks to meet a series of demands, but denied there would be a coup if the deadline was not met. The nine ‘non-negotiable’ demands reportedly include dropping police investigations into Bainimarama and the sacking of police commissioner Andrew Hughes.
