UNMOGIP office restarts operation from Pakistan
2008-11-02
UNMOGIP is the oldest UN peacekeeping operation. It has a budget of 6 million dollars a year. In the 1950s the Indians caught them moving boundary markers in favor of Pakistan. They are not allowed to patrol on the Indian side anymore.
ISLAMABAD: A simple but impressive ceremony was held on Saturday at the office of the United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to mark the opening of their routine six-monthly rotations here. Acting Chief Military Observer Brigadier General Mats Wigselius hoisted the UN flag to mark the opening of the UNMOGIP tenure in Pakistan. Pakistan Army officials were also present on this occasion. UNMOGIP was established on January 24, 1949 with a task to aid local commanders on both sides, in verifying the Line of Control (LoC) and notification of ceasefire violations to the two parties
Thousands of jihadis crossing the LOC. Tens of thousands dead in terrorist violence. Shelling and machinegun fire every day. That is one successful UN operation.

Shutdown in Kashmir, separatist leaders under house arrest
2008-08-09
Authorities put several separatist leaders under house arrest on Friday even as a complete shutdown crippled life here. Senior separatist leaders, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Shabir Ahmad Shah were put under house arrest by the authorities to prevent their proposed march to the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observers Group (UNMOG) in this summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The separatist leaders had announced their march to the headquarters of UNMOG to present a memorandum against the alleged economic blockade of the Kashmir valley and the harassment of the minority Muslim community in the Jammu region.
You may now look bemused at the thought of the Moslems of Kashmir being oppressed by the Pandits they've been bumping off or chasing out of town at every opportunity since 1947.
Another senior separatist leader and chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation front (JKLF) Muhammad Yasin Malik is in the intensive care unit of Soura Medical Institute here after his condition deteriorated Thursday morning. Doctors attending on him said his condition was now stable.
Right. Yasin Malik's on a hunger strike. Since Tuesday. This is Saturday.
All markets, educational institutions, banks and public transport remained closed here on Friday. Attendance in government offices was thin because of the non-availability of public transport in the city.

MKM activists arrested in J&K
2003-03-15
Chairperson of the Mutahida Khawateen Markaz (MKM), Razia Sultan, was taken into preventive custody along with fourteen party activists when they tried to take out a march violating prohibitory orders here on Saturday. The burqa-clad MKM activists, carrying playcards and banners demanding release of woman Hurriyat leader Zamrooda Habib and intervention of human rights organisations to stop alleged atrocities against women in the Valley, gathered near Partap Park and started marching towards the local office of the United Nations Military Observers Group at Sonawar, the sources said.
Ah, yes. The UN Military Observers Group in Kashmir:
"Lookit dat, Alfonse! They're shootin' each other!"
"Why so they are, Gaston! Make a note of it, will you?"

They were stopped by police at Regal Chowk and fifteen of them including Sultan were detained, sources said, adding, other women participants dispersed on their own. Zamrooda, a general council member of Hurriyat Conference, had been arrested by the police in Delhi earlier this year on charges of receiving money from Pakistan High Commission for funding terrorist outfits.
