IDF hits multiple sites in Syria, Lebanon Tuesday night as Israel vows to maintain security
2025-02-27
More on yesterday’s stories here and here.
[IsraelTimes] Defense minister says strikes are part of new policy aimed at ‘pacifying southern Syria;’ strike in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley targets ‘blatant violation’ of ceasefire, military says

Airstrikes targeted sites near Damascus in Syria and deep inside Leb

late Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

In Syria, the strikes hit military storage sites that presented a "threat," while the Lebanese bombing targeted Hezbollah operatives who were violating the terms of a ceasefire, the military said.

Syrian and Lebanese sources reported that a number of people were killed in the attacks.

"The presence of military assets and forces in the southern part of Syria constitutes a threat to the citizens of the State of Israel," the Israeli military said. "The IDF will continue to act to remove any threat to the citizens of the State of Israel."

Defense Minister Israel Katz also confirmed that Israel was carrying out Arclight airstrike

s in southern Syria after blasts were reported in several areas south of Damascus.

"The Air Force is attacking strongly in southern Syria as part of the new policy we have defined of pacifying southern Syria — and the message is clear: we will not allow southern Syria to become southern Lebanon," his spokesperson said in a statement referring to the volatile situation in Lebanon where Iran-backed terror group Hezbollah has repeatedly provoked conflicts, most recently a war last year.

"We will not endanger the security of our citizens," Katz said. "Any attempt by Syrian regime forces and the country’s terrorist organizations to establish themselves in the security zone in southern Syria — will be met with fire."

Israeli planes struck the town of Kisweh, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Damascus, a Syrian security source and Syria TV said. The security source said a military site was targeted, without providing further details.

Additional Israeli air raids hit a town in the southern province of Daraa, residents and Syria TV said.

Residents of Damascus and Rooters news hounds in the city heard the sound of airplanes flying several low passes over the capital and a series of blasts.

There was no immediate comment from Syrian authorities.

UK-based war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Israel had launched strikes on multiple areas in Syria. They included the countryside outside of Damascus, several points in southern Syria, and on the border between Syria and Lebanon.

The observatory, a British-based outfit of unclear funding, reported that two soldiers with the new Syrian government’s security forces and two non-combatants were killed in the strikes.

It said that the deaths were caused by Israeli strikes at a "military unit’s headquarters southwest of Damascus."

A video shared on social media reportedly showed demonstrators marching in Damascus after the strikes and calling on the new Syrian government to bomb Tel Aviv in response to the attacks.

Any Syrian army forces that move south of Damascus will risk "facing an Israeli response by fire," an Israeli official told The Times of Israel.

"We are not going to allow jihadists near our border, we are not going to allow threats to the Druze in Syria... and we will not allow another October 7 to happen in the Golan," said the official.

The strikes come after several Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanded in recent days the demilitarization of southern Syria and warned that Israel would prevent the Syrian army from moving south of Damascus.

On Sunday, Netanyahu warned Syria’s new leadership against moving troops into southern Syria.

The premier vowed Monday that Israeli forces would remain "for the foreseeable future" in a buffer zone established on the border after the fall of the Assad regime in December.

"We will not allow the presence of the HTS organization or the new Syrian Army in the area south of Damascus," he said, referring to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
, the rebel group that led the overthrow of the Assad regime.

"Southern Syria will be demilitarized," Netanyahu declared in a live video broadcast to the AIPAC conference in the US.

In the weeks after rebels stormed into Damascus, Israel carried out multiple air raids to destroy Syrian army assets, saying the move was to prevent the weapons from falling into the hands of those who might pose a threat to the country.

The IDF has also worked to gather or destroy weapons that were left behind by fleeing Syrian army soldiers at military posts in the buffer zone.

HEZBOLLAH ’VIOLATIONS’
The IDF also said it carried out an airstrike against a group of Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley.

The strike was carried out after the military said it identified the operatives at a "strategic weapons" manufacturing and storage facility belonging to the terror group.

The operatives’ activity at the site is a "blatant violation" of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, the IDF said.

Lebanese state media said that the Israeli strike killed at least two people in the country’s east.

"An enemy drone carried out an airstrike on the town of Shaara... near the eastern Lebanon mountain range, killing two people and wounding two" others, said the state-run National News Agency.

Lebanese terror group Hezbollah began attacking across the border on October 8, 2023, the day after allied Paleostinian terror group Hamas
..the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,...
led a massive invasion of southern Israel in which it killed some 1,200 and took 251 hostages.

Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks forced the evacuation of 60,000 northern residents, killed dozens of people, and caused significant damage. Israel hit back with air strikes, and by September the conflict escalated into open war, during which Israel decimated Hezbollah’s leadership and stockpiles. The war ended in a late November ceasefire, which has largely held despite mutual accusations of violations.

Under the November 27 truce agreement, Israeli forces were to withdraw from southern Lebanon while Hezbollah was to remove its military infrastructure from the area. Troops remain in five points deemed "strategic" by the Israeli military.

SDF captures seven villages in eastern Deir ez-Zor
2024-12-05
[Rudaw] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Tuesday announced that it captured seven villages previously held by Syrian regime forces in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor province, days after Russian forces reportedly withdrew from the area.

The SDF said in a statement by its military council in Deir ez-Zor that its forces became "responsible for safeguarding" the villages of Salhiya, Tabia, Hatla, Khesham, Marrat, Mazloum, and Husseiniya in the eastern countryside of the province, saying that the move was in light of recent situation in western Syria, and "serious threat related to the imminent movement" of Islamic State

"The deployment of our forces to these villages is in response to the urgent pleas and appeals of the local populace, following the increasing potential risks that ISIS will exploit the events in the west of the country," the statement added.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor, reported that the SDF launched an attack on the villages on Tuesday, days after Russian forces left their bases in eastern Deir ez-Zor, which was under the control of Syrian regime and pro-Iran

Syrian state media SANA reported on Tuesday that the army "repelled" an attack carried out by the SDF on villages in the Jazeera area in Deir ez-Zor's northern countryside.

This comes amid an escalation of violence in the west of the country, as a coalition of Syrian rebel groups spearheaded by the jihadist Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

(HTS) and the Ottoman Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) launched a major offensive against the Syrian army over the past week. They took control of the northern city of Aleppo, the largest in the country, and advanced their offensive into Hama province.

After the recent escalations in Aleppo, the Syrian regime has focused its efforts on recapturing Aleppo, which they lost to the rebels for the first time since the start of the Syrian civil war over a decade ago.

Explosion kills mayor in Syria’s Homs
2024-11-20
[Rudaw] An bomb on Tuesday killed the mayor of the Kafrnan subdistrict in the central Homs province, state media reported.

"Kafrnan mayor, Mohammad al-Ismail was martyred in an bomb exploding which was planted in his car in Tasnin village, northern Homs countryside," Syrian state media (SANA) reported on X.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted inside a kindergarten bus and went kaboom! before the students got on the bus.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

Earlier this month, a Russian soldier, a translator, and a civilian sustained various injuries in an IED explosion in an ambulance belonging to Russian forces in Hasaka province, according to SOHR.

The incident took place in the so-called Security Square in Hasaka, which is controlled by the Syrian regime forces.

Syrians rose up against the President Bashir al-Assad’s regime in 2011, leading to a full-scale civil war that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and has left millions more in need of dire humanitarian assistance.

Over 13 million Syrians, half the country’s pre-war population, have been displaced since the start of the civil war, more than six million of which are refugees who have fled the war-torn country, according to UN figures.

[Rudaw] At least one civilian was killed and five others were maimed in artillery strikes carried out by the Syrian army on the northwestern Idlib province, the last remaining rebel bastion in the area, a war monitor reported on Wednesday.

"A 5-year-old girl was killed and five civilians were maimed with varying degrees of wounds as a result of heavy artillery shelling by regime forces, targeting agricultural lands around the villages of Maarbalit and Maarzaf southeast of Idlib," reported the UK-based watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

SDF, Pro-Damascus forces clash in Deir ez-Zor: Monitor
2024-09-21
[Rudaw] Clashes broke out between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the pro-Syrian regime forces on Friday, a war monitor reported, with no reports of casualties.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor, reported that the Syrian regime forces and allied militia groups attacked SDF positions in the western Deir ez-Zor countryside, using mortar shells.

There is no immediate information on casualties on both sides.

The SDF, who control northeast Syria (Rojava), has been the main ally of the US-led global coalition in the war against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (ISIS) in Syria. The forces arrested thousands of the group’s fighters along with their wives and children when they defeated ISIS territorially and took the group’s last stronghold in Syria in 2019.

Control of Deir ez-Zor province, which borders Iraq, is now split between the SDF and the Iran-backed Syrian regime. It is also home to many of the country’s key oilfields, such as Omar and Conoco, which the global coalition helps the SDF to control.

The areas under the control of the Syrian regime and those under the control of the SDF are separated by the banks of the Euphrates River. The area is characterized by frequent smuggling operations, due to the difference in price of goods on either side.

Pro-regime fighters frequently clash with the SDF in the strategic province.

In August pro-regime National Defense Forces launched an overnight attack on the SDF in the province. Several non-combatants were killed in the attacks. Days later, the SDF carried out retaliatory attacks on the regime forces and pro-regime groups, killing 20 fighters.

Pro-Damascus forces attack Deir ez-Zor, killing two civilians: SDF
2024-08-09
[RUDAW.NET] Pro-Syrian regime forces launched an overnight attack in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, resulting in the death of two civilians with at least five others injured, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Wednesday.

"In the late hours of yesterday evening and continuing into this morning, Syrian regime- backed mercenaries and groups of the so-called National Defense Forces launched a ground attack against areas on the eastern banks of the Euphrates River, east of Deir Ezzor," said the SDF in a statement, using a different spelling for the province.

Two non-combatants were killed and at least five others were maimed, added the statement by the SDF, which controls much of northeastern Syria (Rojava) and areas along the Euphrates, including the area where this attack occurred.

"In response to this aggression, our forces exercised their legitimate right to defend our area and our people," the statement added. "They successfully repelled the attack and are currently conducting clearance operations to eliminate any remaining threats posed by the attacking groups," stated the multi-ethnic force.

The SDF is a diverse force of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmens, and Assyrian Christians. Supported by the US-led global coalition, the group primarily has fought over the past decade against the Islamic State

Car bomb kills 2 near Iran cultural centre in east Syria: Monitor
2024-06-13
08-06-2024
[Rudaw] An bomb went off in a vehicle in Syria’s eastern province of Deir ez-Zor on Saturday, killing two passengers, reported a war monitor. The blast took place near an Iranian cultural centre.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the vehicle belonged to Iranian-backed militias.

"In this context, regime forces and militias imposed a security cordon around the earth-shattering kaboom site," the UK-based war monitor noted.

Control of oil-rich Deir ez-Zor is split between Syrian regime forces backed by Tehran and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with their American allies.

There are multiple actors in Syria’s fractured security landscape.

A suspected Israeli airstrike on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo on Monday killed a commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force (IRGC-QF).

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 13-year civil war, often claiming to target pro-Iran militias such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah group that supports the Syrian army.

While it rarely comments on strikes attributed to it in Syria, Israel has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate its arch-rival Iran gaining a foothold there.

Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells are also active in Deir ez-Zor.

No party has grabbed credit for the attack.

Syrian state media has not reported the news.

(ISIS) button men launched an attack on their positions near the Iraqi border, a war monitor reported.

ISIS "launched a violent mostly peaceful attack targeting positions of regime forces and their proxy militias ... in al-Bukamal countryside in Deir ez-Zor," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britannia-based war monitor.

"The attack left seven soldiers and turbans dead," it added.

The holy warrior group has been blamed for a string of attacks against Syrian regime forces throughout the year.

In early November, a deadly ISIS attack in the Syrian desert claimed the lives of 34 pro-regime fighters and army soldiers.

In August, an ISIS attack on Syrian army soldiers in the eastern Deir ez-Zor province killed 33, days after ten Syrian soldiers were killed in another ISIS attack in their former stronghold of Raqqa.

One dead in infighting between regime elements in Hasaka: Monitor
2023-09-22
[Rudaw] At least one soldier of the Syrian army was killed Wednesday when infighting erupted between the army and a regime-affiliated militia, a war monitor reported.

Clashes erupted on Wednesday inside a small pocket in central Hasaka city controlled by Damascus where regime institutions are located, known as the Security Square, between Syrian regime forces and the National Defense Forces (NDF), a pro-regime militia. The rest of the city is under the control of Kurdish forces.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, reported that a Syrian government soldier was killed and four others were maimed during the festivities, adding that 16 NDF fighters surrendered to regime forces.

At least five civilians were also injured in the festivities.

Footage published on social media showed military vehicles, including tanks, being deployed inside the Security Square as the sound of gunfire echoed in the skies.

In a video, NDF commander Abdul Qadir Hamo declared a rebellion and the separation of his militia from the Syrian government forces, slamming officials including Defense Minister Ali Mamlouk for demanding a $3 million ransom to prevent Hamo’s removal from his position.

"From now on, you are not affiliated to the state, and none of you are considered elements of the state. Look, they hit you with RPG launchers and slaughter you like an enemy. They are your enemies," Hamo told his fighters in a video statement.

Security forces from the Kurdish administration in northeast Syria (Rojava) began receiving civilians fleeing the violence in the Security Square after the infighting broke out.

Last month, four people were maimed during festivities between the NDF and the prominent Arab Jubour tribe after the former attacked a leader from the tribe.
