The incident occurred as the air force was responding to attempts by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to infiltrate the city, the statement from division commanders in El Fasher said.

A military spokesperson told Sudan Tribune that ''high interference'' caused the accidental strike.

The spokesperson denied reports that the strike targeted weapons depots or that forces belonging to the Sudan Liberation Movement were present at the site.

The army launched airstrikes targeting RSF positions, attempting to destroy heavy weaponry used to attack central El Fasher and key locations.

The RSF responded with anti-aircraft fire and renewed artillery shelling. Local authorities reported over 60 deaths and nearly 100 injuries from RSF shelling in recent days.

Both sides also deployed drones in El Fasher, further escalating the violence. Heavy weapons festivities continued throughout Wednesday in the southern and eastern parts of the city.

The intensified fighting has triggered a mass displacement of civilians and internally displaced persons (IDPs) towards areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement in Tawila and Jebel Marra.

Ibrahim Khater, Director General of the Ministry of Health in North Darfur, told Sudan Tribune that the corpse count from the conflict has reached 750, with an additional 4,700 individuals injured. Khater highlighted the dire challenges facing the healthcare system, particularly the severe shortage of medical personnel, as many doctors have fled the region due to the persistent violence.

has reported that the fighting, which erupted on May 10th, has displaced hundreds of thousands of people from El Fasher, with many seeking refuge in the Jebel Marra areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement.

Khater emphasized the urgent need for over 200 doctors across various specialities to staff the remaining operational hospitals in North Darfur. He noted that most of the remaining medical staff in El Fasher have chosen to remain in their homes or have relocated to other areas within the state in search of safety.

The official also revealed a critical shortage of essential medicines, including malaria treatments and medications for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. The Ministry of Health has been procuring medicines from local markets, company warehouses, and through imports to address these shortages.

Sudanese army retakes A-Dinder from RSF

ese army and its allied armed movements announced on Thursday the recapture of A-Dinder, a city in Sennar State, southeast Sudan, five days after it fell under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF had seized the town, located on the border between Sennar and Gedaref states in eastern Sudan, and engaged in widespread violations, including looting money, agricultural crops, gold jewellery, mobile phones, and cars, as part of a larger campaign impacting multiple villages.

Video clips released by sources affiliated with the army and the joint force revealed the destruction inflicted by the RSF on civilian property, including cars, houses, and shops. Other footage showed combat vehicles and cycle of violences belonging to the RSF, which were destroyed by the joint army and allied forces following intense battles in different neighbourhoods.

A statement from the joint force declared that they had "liberated A-Dinder and pursued the Janjaweed militia to the entrance of Sinjah," a nearby town. They also recovered looted property and urged citizens to return home, promising protection.

The joint force, composed of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minawi, the Justice and Equality Movement led by Gibril Ibrahim, and a faction of the Gathering of Sudan Liberation Forces, has a strong presence in al-Faw of Gedaref State.

Strategically located about 25 kilometres from Sinjah, the capital of Sennar State, A-Dinder serves as a vital link between the Sennar and Blue Nile regions and eastern Sudan.

The A-Dinder Bridge, spanning the Blue Nile, became an escape route for thousands of civilians fleeing RSF abuses in Sennar State. They sought refuge in the eastern states.

Previously, on June 29, the RSF took control of Sinjah after moving their forces along dirt roads from the Jebel Moya areas, about 40 kilometres south of Sennar city. After capturing the army base and local government headquarters, RSF members reportedly engaged in looting and terrorizing residents.

RSF drone strikes on El Fasher mosque, kills eight
2024-07-03
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Eight people, including women and children, were killed and 18 others injured in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, on Monday. The deaths occurred after a drone, reportedly launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), targeted a mosque housing a volunteer kitchen providing aid to displaced people.

El Fasher continues to endure daily artillery shelling and drone strikes as the RSF has been attacking the city since 10 May, resulting in numerous civilian deaths and the displacement of thousands.

Dr Ibrahim Al-Ghali, a doctor in El Fasher, told Sudan Tribune: “An RSF drone fired several shells at the ‘Takia’ of the Tijaniya Mosque, killing eight civilians and injuring 18 others.”

He explained that the targeted site provided daily meals to the remaining residents of the Tijaniya neighbourhood, making it a refuge for many women and children seeking food.

Several youth initiatives in El Fasher are providing food and aid to the remaining residents, as the RSF has imposed a siege on the city for over two months, preventing essential food and medicine from reaching the population.

Eyewitnesses informed Sudan Tribune that a large wave of displacement from the northern neighbourhoods of El Fasher and the Abu Shouk camp continues towards the town of “Tawella,” controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Nur.

The displacement is ongoing as the RSF intensifies its artillery shelling on the Abu Shouk camp, which shelters more than 400,000 people.

RSF bombs two more hospitals in El Fasher
2024-07-03
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continued targeting health facilities in North Darfur state, shelling two hospitals in El Fasher on Tuesday.

This is the ninth such attack since fighting broke out in El Fasher between the army, the RSF, and their allies on 10 May. These clashes saw the use of heavy weaponry, including airstrikes and artillery.

The governor of the Darfur region, Minni Minawi, confirmed in a tweet on platform X that the RSF destroyed a private hospital in El Fasher’s Grand Market. He stated this meant they had targeted all hospitals in the area with high-precision cannons reportedly brought from the Emirates.

In a second tweet, Minawi said that the RSF bombed Jabal Marra Hospital in El Fasher less than 40 minutes after the attack on the private hospital.

A doctor informed Sudan Tribune that the shelling of the Jabal Marra medical complex extensively damaged the building but left the medical equipment unharmed.

The RSF’s targeting of medical facilities in El Fasher is seen as an attempt to cripple the health sector. The indiscriminate shelling has already destroyed the dialysis centre, El Fasher South Hospital, the Saudi Hospital, and several private medical centres.

The military spokesperson for the Sudan Liberation Movement-Transitional Council, Ahmed Jaddo, told Sudan Tribune that the movement, in cooperation with the Sudan Liberation Forces Gathering faction headed by El Taher Hajar, ensured the safe arrival of approximately 500 people from El Fasher to the areas of Tawilla, Korma, and Kebkabiya.

ese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensifies. Those fleeing have recounted harrowing experiences of escalating violence and dire living conditions.

For almost a month, fierce battles have raged between the Sudanese army, supported by allied armed movements, and the RSF. The conflict has resulted in hundreds of casualties and triggered a massive wave of displacement, with an estimated 28,000 people fleeing their homes between May 24 and June 3.

Adam Rajal, spokesperson for the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps in Darfur, confirmed that thousands of displaced individuals arrived in Tawila and surrounding villages on Monday.

The situation in Tawila is dire, with a spokesperson for the Displaced Persons Shelter Committee reporting severe shortages of food, medicine, water, and shelter.

According to Sudan Tribune, Tawila was previously under army control but has since been taken over by the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdel Wahid Nur, to protect those fleeing the fighting.

An official from the Shelter Committee, affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement’s civil authority, stated that the influx of displaced people has overwhelmed the town’s resources, exacerbating existing shortages and driving up prices.

The region also lacks adequate medical services, with the only hospital in Tawila facing a critical shortage of supplies.

Video testimonies collected by the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps reveal the harrowing experiences of those fleeing El Fasher. They describe daily shelling, ongoing battles, looting, and the loss of essential necessities.

The shelling targeted the al-Wadi neighbourhoods, areas near the army’s general command and the main market, the Tambasi neighbourhood, and shelters for displaced people in the al-Qadi and Dar al-Salam schools.

Later that evening, the RSF attacked multiple sites in an attempt to breach the joint force’s defences. A military source informed Sudan Tribune that an estimated 25 combat vehicles entered the Bisharia neighbourhood, east of the city, but were repelled by the joint force after intense fighting. Fierce battles also erupted in the southern part of the city, where the joint force destroyed seven RSF vehicles and killed a significant number of their soldiers.

Additionally, the joint force shot down an RSF drone targeting their headquarters near the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people north of El Fasher.

RSF exploited security breach to attack hospital in North Darfur's capital
2024-06-11
[SUDANTRIBUNE] A security lapse exploited by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to an attack on the South Hospital in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, sparking outrage and accusations against the Joint Darfur Force responsible for the city’s southern flank.

Tribune that elements of the joint force guarding the southern axis were tricked into withdrawing from their positions, allowing the RSF to infiltrate El Fasher.

Sudan Tribune’s investigation revealed that the joint force stationed in the al-Salam neighbourhood in southern El Fasher received deceptive orders from individuals disguised in Joint Force uniforms, instructing them to retreat due to inclement weather and rain. Subsequently, an RSF unit, using civilian vehicles, entered the city centre through this opening and attacked the South Hospital, the only functioning medical facility in the area.

Upon discovering the breach, a Sudanese army force, supported by elements of the Joint Force stationed at the nearby market, engaged the RSF, ultimately driving them southeast of the city.

Joint Force front man Ahmed Hussein Mustafa vehemently denied issuing any withdrawal orders for the al-Salam neighbourhood. He alleged that the RSF exploited a security vulnerability with the assistance of individuals affiliated with al-Hadi Idris’s Sudan Liberation Movement-Transitional Council (SLM-TC) and Tahir Hajar’s faction of the Gathering of Sudan Liberation Forces (GSLF), both of which have declined to support the army against the RSF.

Hussein informed Sudan Tribune that they possess evidence implicating members of these groups in destabilizing El Fasher’s security. He stated that these individuals impersonate Joint Force personnel, utilize civilian vehicles, and operate among civilians, providing the RSF with intelligence on the movements and locations of Joint Force units. He pledged to decisively address this threat soon.

Sources disclosed that several individuals were apprehended on the day of the hospital attack, confessing to being members of Hajer’s group and admitting to entering the hospital before the RSF’s arrival.

However,

SLM-TC leader al-Hadi Idris refuted these allegations, emphasizing that his forces withdrew from El Fasher over two months ago. He attributed the accusations to his neutral stance and calls for a ceasefire.

ese army and allied armed movements have resulted in a growing number of civilian casualties.

The RSF launched a large-scale offensive, deploying thousands of fighters from across Darfur in an attempt to capture El Fasher. The Sudanese army and its allies responded by reinforcing their presence within the city.

Eyewitnesses reported to "Sudan Tribune" that the RSF bombarded densely populated areas in the south and west of the city with artillery fire, causing significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction of homes.

Conflicting Narratives:

A military official from the joint forces claimed they repelled a "treacherous attack" by the RSF, inflicting heavy losses on them and capturing several military vehicles. He further alleged that the RSF used foreign mercenaries in the assault.

In contrast, an RSF spokesperson countered that their forces successfully defended their positions from an attack by "mercenary movements and coup forces." They claimed capturing military vehicles and inflicting significant casualties on their attackers. They also accused the army of war crimes for shelling civilian areas.

General mobilization announced:

Minni Minawi, head of the Sudan Liberation Movement and Governor of Darfur, reacted by announcing a general mobilization to defend El Fasher and its citizens. He accused the RSF of mobilizing fighters and mercenaries to plunder the city and urged residents to protect their lives and property.

Minawi further condemned the RSF’s actions, including shelling civilian areas and blocking aid deliveries, calling them "criminal" acts.

The situation in El Fasher remains highly volatile, with both sides offering conflicting narratives. The heavy fighting and disregard for civilian life raise serious concerns about a potential escalation into a wider conflict.
