JMB active despite arrest of top brass |
2010-08-17 |
[Bangla Daily Star] Law enforcers fear a backlash from Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) despite detaining the top brass of the banned militant outfit in recent months. Rab and police officials said the JMB is still a concern for them as some dedicated operatives are active in the organisation. Some of the militants have training on making high-powered explosives like belt bombs. The JMB is reportedly in a shambles due to arrest of its chief Saidur Rahman, military wing chief Shiblu and acting chief Anwar Alam alias Nazmul over one and a half months since July 12. The officers said Sohail Mahfuz, who is oldest among three serving JMB Majlish-e-Sura members, might have taken over as its helmsman. "Sohail Mahfuz is known as an arrogant person. He might launch bomb attacks against those he would consider as enemy," said a top Rab official seeking anonymity. Rab Director General Hassan Mahmood Khandker told The Daily Star yesterday they have kept a grip on JMB activities. Even then, he considers it a potential threat. Rab sources said there is also a chance that one of two sura members -- Shaheed alias Osman and Dhaka University graduate Siddiqur Rahman alias Mostafiz who worked as an adviser to Saidur -- has assumed the post of JMB ameer. The JMB stepped into the spotlight as a hardcore militant outfit through synchronised bomb attacks in 63 of 64 districts on August 17, 2005. In subsequent attacks, they killed a number of people including two judges in Jhalakathi. Since August 17 blasts, crime busters have so far arrested 985 JMB leaders and operatives, including 607 captured by Rab alone. The arrestees include its founding ameer Shaikh Abdur Rahman who along with his second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai and four other leaders was executed on March 30, 2007. Police sources said a total of 322 cases were filed with different police stations since the countrywide blasts. Of the cases, police have submitted charge sheets in 289 cases and final reports in 25 cases. Eighteen of the cases are under investigation. Trials of 115 cases have been completed in which 51 persons got death sentence, 131 life imprisonment and 184 different terms. Some 318 people have been acquitted and 174 cases are still under trial. Of the 322, a total of 154 cases were lodged in connection with the August 17 bomb blasts. Of the cases, detectives have submitted charge sheets in 133 cases and final reports in five cases. Sixteen cases are still under investigation, CID sources said. The sources also said trials were completed in 81 cases in which 29 accused were sentenced to death, 80 life imprisonment and 79 persons to different terms. Some 57 cases are still under trial. |

Law enforcers hunt for hidden JMB arms
2010-07-16 | |||
[Bangla Daily Star] Banned militant organisation Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh has destroyed all the explosives it had in northern region, claimed detained outfit leader Anwar Alam. Law enforcers, however, have doubt over the account. Police suspect Anwar Alam alias Nazmul alias Bhagne Shahid might have huge explosives and firearms stashed in the region. Anwar, the acting JMB chief, told police during an interrogation yesterday that they had announced northern region as an area free from bomb-making factories, interrogators said. "As part of a new strategy taken around three months back, they [the organisation leaders] have already dismantled their explosives in the area," Bogra Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir told The Daily Star quoting Anwar. A top police official, who led the drives to catch Alam and former JMB chief Saidur Rahman, said, "We suspect Alam has kept explosives hidden in dens in northern region." "We're worried about it as we seized powerful belt-bombs in Narayanganj in May. Those bombs can kill 50 to 60 people at a time if blasted in a gathering," added the official seeking anonymity.
Intelligence Wing Director of Rapid Action Battalion Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan said, "We suspect JMB still possesses a good amount of explosives and hand made bombs and grenades." Ziaul Ahsan said they are on efforts to seize explosives, if JMB possesses any. I smell a few upcomming moonlight drives to hunt arms caches. Those are always good for a "Crossfire" accident. In an interrogation statement of JMB's ex-military commander Zahidul Islam Sumon alias Bomaru Mizan read Bhagne (nephew) Shahid is operating a bomb-making factory in north Bengal. The Daily Star obtained a copy of the statement. Mizan was arrested on May 14 in 2009. The following day, 11 bombs, a pistol, and a huge stash of chemical residues, plastic explosives, grenade casings, fuses and detonators were seized from the capital's Mirpur area. The clues given by Mizan led Rab to launch a number of unsuccessful drives in several northern districts to unearth the factory. Detained Saidur has already admitted to detectives that his outfit has several hundred explosives, handmade bombs and grenades stashed at different dens, said the DB official who interrogated the JMB man. The Bogra SP also said Anwar claimed that as part of a new strategy they have deactivated their military wing in northern region and are now focusing on new recruitment from the region. The JMB boss also admitted that they made a good number of bombs and grenades in northern region to foil the 2008 national elections. He also said explosives might have been stashed in Dhaka region. Police said Nazmul alias Bhagne Shahid, a highly motivated JMB member, is accused in several cases filed at different places in the country. Some of the cases are in connection with assaulting police and arms looting in Joypurhat, Grameen Bank robbery in Pabna, lootings of BRAC banks in Natore and Tangail, bomb attacks on four cinemas in Mymensingh and attack on Prof Humayun Azad.

JMB still able to stage attacks |
2010-05-28 |
[Bangla Daily Star] Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, the banned Islamist outfit believed to have weakened in recent years, still has around 400 full-time cadres across the country, and a military wing capable of launching spectacular attacks. It has huge explosives, handmade bombs and grenades stashed at different dens. The recently detained JMB chief, Saidur Rahman, made these claims during questioning yesterday, said an interrogator who would not be identified talking about the matter. On a six-day remand, Saidur also spoke of a split within the JMB ranks. He said one group wants to stage attacks and continue recruitment simultaneously, while the other wants to reorganise the outfit first and then go for attacks. Talking to The Daily Star, the interrogator said, "Saidur's claims about the explosives and bomb-making expertise have got us quite worried." Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner AKM Shahidul Hoque said, "We are verifying the information gleaned during interrogation. We are trying to uncover the sources of their finances and also their political and regional links." Assistant Commissioner Sanwar Hossain, an explosives expert of the detective branch, said explosives, bombs, architectural designs and the other materials seized from the JMB dens recently suggest the outfit still has a "very high level of bomb-making expertise". During interrogation, Saidur claimed he stays the chief of JMB. The charter of their outfit has no restrictions on being at the helm while in detention, said a member of the combined cell formed to quiz the JMB operatives captured last week and also to net those at large. Apart from fake currency trade, JMB gets funds from several sources at home and abroad, the militant boss told the interrogators. JMB cadres are directed to avoid using cell phones, as doing so would mean running the risk of being tracked. Fresh from last week's successes, the law enforcers are now on a hunt for JMB leader Bhagina Shahid and those who slipped through the dragnet during Sunday's raid on a house at Dania. JMB's military wing commander Shiblu was captured during the raid that left eight cops hurt in an attack by the fleeing militants. Those who escaped arrest Sunday are Shiblu's wife and military wing sub-commander Kawsar alias Milon and his wife. Following up the information obtained from Shiblu, police arrested JMB chief Saidur, his third wife Naima Akhter, the outfit's military coordinator Amir Hossain alias Sharif and ehsar (full-time) members Nur Hossain alias Sabuj and Abdullah Hel Kafi in the capital and Narayanganj on Monday and Tuesday. |

Depleted JMB targets Dhaka |
2010-05-27 |
[Bangla Daily Star] The banned Islamist militant group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh has been hoping to attract new recruits by signalling its re-emergence through a series of explosions in the capital, said intelligence sources yesterday. "Due to the arrest of the group's current chief, their reorganising efforts will fail," Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad told The Daily Star. "The execution of their former chief Abdur Rahman basically destroyed their network. Recently they were trying to reorganise from the capital." the IGP added. Current JMB chief Maulana Saidur Rahman alias Zafar, who was arrested by law enforcers on Tuesday, told detectives that his detained third wife Naima Akhter, and two other women who managed to escape Sunday's police raid on their Dania hideout, are well trained in use of grenades and other firearms. During a preliminary interrogation, he admitted to his earlier affiliation with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The intelligence sources said JMB operatives have been storing handmade grenades in different hideouts in the capital. The grenades were not manufactured in the capital, they added. Law enforcers so far raided three JMB dens, two in the city's Dania and the other at Painadi of Narayanganj; but they could not ascertain how many more such hideouts are there in the city, and on its outskirts. JMB operative Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Shiblu, who had been injured during his arrest on Sunday, told detectives that the group had recently trained some of its female operatives in using grenades, and they have been taking preparations to carry out a series of grenade attacks in the capital on a limited scale. Shiblu also said the aim of the planned attacks is to signal the group's re-emergence, and to attract prospective new recruits. An intelligence official said Shiblu was the chief of the planned operation. The official added that the top brass of JMB used codes in documents outlining the attack plans. The law enforces have such a document in their possession, and have been able to decode it, he said. The document says the group would carry out small scale attacks in the capital first, to assert its re-emergence. It also reveals that the group has plans to assassinate some people in the judiciary, and some "traitors", the definition of which are yet to be known by the sleuths. Meanwhile, arrested Saidur Rahman, Naima Akhter, and full-time JMB member Abdullah-hel-Kafi were sent on six-day remand each yesterday. Special Branch Sub-inspector Saiful Islam filed a case with Kodomtoli police against the three in connection with terrorist activities. The group's military wing coordinator Amir Hossain alias Sharif, and another full-time member Nur Hossain alias Sabuj, both of whom had been arrested from Narayanganj on Sunday, were sent to 7-day remand each yesterday. Two cases were filed against the two on Monday, in connection with possession of bomb making materials, firearms, ammunition, and jihadi books. Three cases were filed against Shiblu on Sunday, in connection with possession of firearms and explosives, and assault on law enforcers. Shiblu is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital as he was wounded in a bomb explosion that he himself carried out trying to escape arrest, wounding eight law enforcers as well. |

Raid raid JMB chief's flat
2010-05-25 | |||||||
![]() Police have picked up Shiblu's parents and two siblings for Additional Superintendent of Police Zannatul Hasan of the police headquarters said they had information that Shiblu took over the charge of JMB explosive unit after the arrest of former chief Boma Mizan last year. He said Shiblu set up his den there to make explosives for JMB, which is trying to regroup again. Sources say that a 21-member team consisted of police headquarters, Kadamtoli police and Special Branch of police raided the flat to capture Maulana Saidur Rahman, the current JMB chief. Detained Shiblu, however, identified himself as Abu Bakkar Siddique and an operative of banned Islamist outfit Harkatul-Jihad (Huji).
At least 10 people including eight policemen and Shiblu were injured during the raid at the den on the second floor of a four-storey building at Shahjalalbagh of South Dania. Three other militants escaped by hurling bombs at law enforcers. The police also recovered books on jihad and pamphlets that mentioned the name of executed JMB chief Shaekh Abdur Rahman, sources said. Rab and police sources said executed Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai was the first military wing commander of JMB. After Bangla Bhai became the second-in-command of the militant organisation, JMB chief executed Shaikh Abdur Rahman's brother Ataur Rahman Sunny was given the charge of the military wing. Sunny was arrested on December 14, 2005, and Mizan alias Boma Mizan took over the charge. After Mizan's arrest on May 15, 2009, Shiblu took up the job, said sources. Rab officials said Maulana Saidur Rahman took the outfit's helm after Abdur Rahman and five others were executed in 2006.

JMB camp busted | |||
2009-09-28 | |||
![]()
The arrestees were paraded before the media at a press briefing at the Rab headquarters in Uttara yesterday afternoon. Speaking to reporters there, Rahim said he, Naim and Majlish-e-Shura member Osman alias Shahid had planned an attack on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia during her election campaign in Comilla last year. Of them, Naim was nabbed by Rab. Though he and Osman managed to slip through the dragnet, their plan for assault on the former prime minister failed, he added. At the briefing, Rab's Additional Director General Col Mizanur Rahman Khan said, "It took us around eight months of intelligence work to trace the camp in deep forest." He said the camp, which has three earthen and tin-shed rooms, was not complete for training yet. Rahim was building it on four acres of land purchased in the name of farming. Sajib, one of the arrestees, who owns a poultry farm in the area, had helped in the purchase. Osman oversaw things in this regard on instructions from the outfit's present head Saidur Rahman. "Naim, who was arrested at Chandina in Comilla last year, told us JMB had been shifting its training facilities to far-flung hills, and since then we have been keeping a close watch on the areas," Col Mizan said. Around eight months back, the JMB bought the Matiranga land for around Tk 2 lakh. "JMB activities are getting limited. We are closing in on those still at large and hope to arrest its current chief soon," he added. Rahim, who is also known as Zahid, Habib and Saiful, said he joined JMB in 2004. He fled to Matiranga and took a job at Sajib's poultry farm after the countrywide blasts the following year. A Rab press release said he is a key member of the JMB suicide squad. He hurled a bomb on the Rab team during the Comilla raid last year and ran away. He stands accused in three cases filed in this connection. JMB STRUCTURE At the briefing, Rab officials said Moulana Saidur Rahman's son Bashar plays a key role in running the organisation. Seven members of Shura, highest policymaking body, are Shiblu alias Shishir, Sohel Mahfuz of Kushtia, Mehedi alias Abir of Barguna, Nazmul alias Bhagne Shahid of Natore, Osman alias Shahid of Comilla, Sayeem of Dhaka and Mahmud alias Asad of Panchagarh. Of them, Shishir is in charge of the military wing, Sohel Mahfuz dawat (invitation) department, Mehedi southern districts, Nazmul northern region, Osman Chittagong division and Sayeem takes care of the IT wing. The duties assigned to Mahmud could not yet be known. Mostafiz alias Siddique of Gazipur works as an adviser to the banned outfit.
