Netherlands airport partially evacuated due to security alert
2016-04-13
[Iran Press TV] The Dutch security forces have partially evacuated Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport following reports of a suspicious package.

"Police have evacuated part of the airport plaza and the adjacent Sheraton Hotel and placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
one person amid a suspicious situation" late on Tuesday, said airport spokeswoman Danielle Timmer, without giving the identity of the suspect.

The heavily-armed masked security forces cordoned off the area and the baggage of the detained man was examined in the presence of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, a special unit of the Dutch Armed Forces tasked with diffusing bombs.

Police said that it also conducted a search operation at a bus stop outside the airport's main terminal.

"Part of Schiphol is not accessible due to an incident... For now, air traffic has not been affected," the airport said on its official Twitter account.

The alert reportedly triggered pandemonium as many stranded passengers started to run to safety.

Much of Europe remains on high alert following last month’s terror attacks in Brussels that claimed dozens of lives.
According to The Times of Israel:
Military police front man Alfred Ellwanger told AFP that "around 9:45 pm (1945 GMT) a man was nabbed
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
on the square in front of the main entrance to the airport’s plaza".

"The bomb disposal squad is also on the scene and they are checking the man’s luggage," he said.

SANA news agency reported that mortar shells fired by Lions of Islam at al-Zablatani area and Damascus Sheraton Hotel killed a civilian and injured 14 others.

The agency quoted a source at the Police command as saying that Lions of Islam of the so called "Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
" fired three shells landed in al-Zablatani residential area, causing the death of one civilian and injury of 13 others in addition to material damage inflicted upon three cars.

The source added that another mortar shell fell in the vicinity of Damascus Sheraton Hotel leaving a dustman injured. Another mortar shell also landed in Bab Touma neighborhood caused material damage in one of the houses.

Elsewhere in in Qamishli, 80 km to the north of the Eastern Hasaka province, three other persons were maimed when an bomb went in the area.

Terrorists detonated an bomb which they had earlier planted on a bicycle parked in front of al-Bayan school at the center of Qamishli city, a source in Hasaka province told SANA news hound.
AnNahar adds:
Two bombs hit the Kurdish-majority city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria on Monday, wounding at least three people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The first blast hit a patrol of Kurdish fighters from the People's Protection Units (YPG) and maimed three people, the Britannia-based monitoring group said. The second bomb appeared to have targeted Kurdish local security forces, it said, reporting injuries but no precise toll.

State television also reported the two kabooms.

Kurdish activist Arin Shekhmos said the first blast had targeted a YPG car on patrol but that the maimed were civilians. He said the second blast hit a market area and that three civilians had been maimed.

Qamishli is Syria's biggest Kurdish-majority city, and considered by the Kurds to be the capital of Hasakeh province. The city has been targeted by bombings before, with the Islamic State

Yemen rebels seize US vehicles
2015-02-13
Sanaa - The United States, Britain and France moved to close their embassies in Yemen on Wednesday, increasing the isolation of Houthi rebels who have seized power. In a show of bravado against the Americans, the rebels seized the cars of US diplomats left at the airport on the way out.
The question, and death is not an option: is Yemen the new Libya or is Libya the new Yemen? Discuss...
At the same time, the rebels attacked demonstrators holding protests against their power grab in various parts of the capital, Sanaa, witnesses said. The fighters beat protesters and stabbed them with knives, arrested more than a dozen.

The increasing turmoil comes almost four years to the day since the start of Yemen’s 2011 Arab Spring uprising that ousted the longtime autocratic ruler but then opened a political transition that crumbled between the country’s grinding forces of tribal politics, sectarian divisions, Al Qaeda militancy and succession movements.
Nice going, Champ...
The crisis reached a new peak when the Houthis overran the capital Sanaa late last year. They have since taken over larger parts of the country. In January, the rebels put US-backed President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and all his Cabinet ministers under house arrest, leading to their resignations. Subsequently, the Houthis dissolved parliament and declared they were taking over the government.

The embassy closures were a signal that world powers see little chance the rebels’ advances will roll back soon.

More than 25 vehicles abandoned by departing American embassy staffers at Sanaa airport were seized by the rebels, according to airport officials. The rebels also took weapons that were left in the vehicles, the officials said.

The embassy’s Marine detachment, which escorted the cars, left their personal sidearms behind since they would be unable to take them on the commercial flights they were leaving on, Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters in Washington. They destroyed their heavier weapons — automatic weapons and machine guns — before leaving the embassy, he said.
When was the last time Marines were ordered to leave their weapons behind?
Yemeni officials said on Wednesday that embassy staffers also destroyed files before leaving and handed over Sanaa’s Sheraton Hotel, where they resided, to the United Nations.

US officials said the embassy’s closure would not affect counterterrorism operations against Al Qaeda’s Yemen branch. Yemeni officials, however, say the move was likely to curtail US military operations in the country. Washington has long considered the Yemeni branch to be the world’s most dangerous offshoot of the global terror group.

State launches fraud investigation into voter registration group
2014-09-10
[WSBTV] Channel 2 Action News has learned Georgia's secretary of state is investigating allegations of forged voter registration applications and demanding records from a voter registration group with ties to one of the state's highest ranking Democrats.

A subpoena was sent to the New Georgia Project and its parent organization Third Sector Development on Tuesday.

The organization is a project of the nonprofit organization Third Sector Development, which was founded and is led by House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams.

The subpoena demands all documents be turned over to the State Election Board's Sherlocks by Sept. 16.

In a memo sent to county elections officials, Secretary of State Brian Kemp said in recent weeks his office has "received numerous complaints about voter applications submitted by the New Georgia Project."

Kemp wrote, "Preliminary investigation has revealed significant illegal activities' including forged voter registration applications, forged signatures on releases, and applications with false or inaccurate information."

A front man confirmed Kemp's office was contacted by officials in DeKalb, Gwinnett, Henry, Bartow, Butts and Muscogee counties.

"We're just not going to put up with fraud. I mean, we have zero tolerance for that in Georgia so we've opened an investigation and served some subpoenas," Kemp told Channel 2 political news hound Lori Geary. "At the end of the day this is not going to be about politics. This is about potential fraud which we think happened."
Geary went to the location where the subpoena was served and found a UPS store inside the lobby of a Sheraton Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

The New Georgia Project's website describes it as "a non-partisan effort to register and civically engage the rising electorate in our state."

Syria Rebels Advance towards Weapons Depots, Says NGO
2013-10-24
[An Nahar] housands of years, the town lies on the road linking Mahin and the rebel-held Qalamun area of Damascus province.

In Qalamun, which lies on the Lebanese border, loyalists have been fighting for months to wrest control from the opposition.

Activists say troops fighting there are backed by fighters from the Leb's Hizbullah.

Referring to Sadad, a rebel commander said "the regime is responsible for whatever happens to this historic town."

The rebels had entered the town without a fight, he said.

"The cop shoppe surrendered without resistance, and there were no festivities until the regime tried to retake the town by force. It used warplanes, artillery, tanks and all kinds of conventional weapons," said Lieutenant Colonel Oraba Idriss, who defected from the army to join the rebels.

Many of the town's residents have fled in the past hours, and as the rebels advanced, the loyalist air force launched an air campaign on the area.

Elsewhere, fierce festivities raged in Moadamiyet al-Sham southwest of Damascus, which has been under siege for nearly a year.

The opposition has called for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to allow assistance to flow into the rebel-held town.

In the heart of Damascus, rebels shelled Baramkeh and Umayyad Square, wounding several people, the Observatory said.

State news agency SANA said one of the shells struck near the Sheraton Hotel, and that "the terrorist attack injured two people and caused material damage in the area."

Umayyad Square is home to several buildings housing government, military, security and cultural facilities.

Two cops among 17 killed in Karachi
2012-09-23
[Dawn] At least 17 people, including two coppers, were killed in sporadic acts of violence during rallies taken out by different religious organizations in protest against the anti-Islam film on Friday. Over 100 people, 12 coppers among them, were maimed.

Five cinema houses, three police mobiles, three banks and a number of shops were set on fire and looted by the protesters. Two cop shoppes were also attacked by the violent mob.

Most of the violence took place on M.A. Jinnah Road, Merewether Tower and PIDC as the protesters fought pitched battles with police. A heavy exchange of fire took place near Tower where police had placed containers to block access to Jinnah Bridge.

Initially police fired teargas shells at the protesters, but when the situation worsened they resorted to firing. The mob wanted to march towards the US consulate from Jinnah Bridge to register their protest.

The Tower showdown between police and protesters left a policeman dead and five others maimed. Four protesters suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

"Six bodies, including that of a policeman, and 40 maimed have been brought to Civil Hospital. A maimed policeman died during treatment," a medico legal officer at the hospital said. The crowd turned hostile at the emergency ward when a power failure hit the hospital. They ransacked the ward and took away an AC and a computer.

"Six men were brought dead in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and one died during treatment," Dr Seemi Jamali, in-charge of the hospital's emergency ward, said, adding: "We have treated 83 gunshot victims brought from different areas of the city."

Ten injured were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The protesters resorted to violence at emergency wards of both the hospitals.

Four cinema houses -- Nishat, Prince, Capri and Bambino -- were set on fire when protest rallies were passing through M.A.

Jinnah Road on their way to the US consulate. Gulistan Cinema was torched in Quaidabad. The DC Office, Malir, was also set on fire.

"Two of our fire tenders were attacked by the protesters. Five firemen were maimed at Tibet Centre when we tried to reach the cinema houses," said an officer at the central fire station. "We received complaints about fire in cinema houses, cars and banks, but our vehicles were not able to reach the place because of the volatile situation". The protesters acted with impunity at the PIDC intersection for a few hours, setting fire to a bank and ransacking almost all banks located on the stretch of the road described by police as the 'red zone'. The shops located adjacent to PIDC building were also damaged and looted by the protesters.

The NIB Bank was set on fire at PICD, while UBL, MCB Bank and National Bank were ransacked and looted by the protesters.

They ransacked ATM machines of the banks at PIDC and tried to snatch cash out of them.

Another bank was ransacked in Tower area.

A traffic police post at PIDC was set on fire. The protesters also ransacked front shops at Sheraton Hotel and an international fast food chain outlet in the PIDC House, taking away their furniture.

At least three police mobiles were set on fire near the Chief Minister House.

"We don't have ammunition to use against the protesters", said a policeman who was hiding behind a container.

Press Club, along with their big escorts, but none of them reached the PIDC when the loot and arson attacks were taking place.

A number of coppers were maimed when the protesters attacked two cop shoppes near Keamari and Manghopir. There were reports that the protesters snatched some arms from the coppers. One of the maimed coppers, identified as sub-inspector Illyas, later died in hospital.

FM: Marines protect US embassy in Sana'a
2012-03-24
[Yemen Post] Yemen's Foreign Minister Abu Bakar Al-Qirbi has revealed about the existence of US marine forces in Sana'a that are tasked with protecting the US Embassy from any Al-Qaeda's risks.
Isn't that what Marines have been doing at American embassies for quite a while now?
Only for two hundred and some years...
Media sources said that the Sheraton Hotel has been completely allocated for the US forces since last June, pointing out that these forces are replaced regularly.

In an interview with the weekly Al-Wasat newspaper, Al-Qirbi affirmed that there are forces inside the Sheraton Hotel that overlooks the embassy.

He pointed out that Yemen turned to a field of regional and international interventions.

This revelation came following the killing of an American national in Taiz and threats released by Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula(AQAP) in which it said it would target foreign embassies in Yemen.

The US embassy was subjected to the most violent attacks of the terrorist organization on September 17, 2008, when a number of the embassy workers and Yemeni soldiers were killed and maimed.

Yemeni news sources had stated early of March that the US sent a marine unit to protect Hadi.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
sources of the Yemeni President Abdu-Rabo Mansour Hadi denied the news about the marine forces, stressing that Yemen has forces that could absolutely carry out their duties, asking media outlets to be accurate and credible.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio had his hands full of angry bleached blonde...
In remarks to the London-based Arabic-speaking newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, Al-Qirbi cautioned against the Iranian interventions in Yemen, stressing that the Iranian interventions became known for every one.

He further called the super powers to prevent Iran from interfere in Yemen's affairs, emphasizing that such interventions could affect on Yemen's security and stability.

Pakistani Taliban changing tactics
2011-09-28
ISLAMABAD - The attack on Monday by a jacket wallah who rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the residence of a senior police official spearheading a campaign against the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) in the commercial capital Bloody Karachi makes it abundantly clear that the shock waves from the 9/11 terror attacks a decade ago show few signs of abating.

The Bloody Karachi suicide kaboom was in keeping with the change in TTP tactics as the group has apparently decided to target top coppers and military officials involved in counterterrorism efforts. The change in tactic shows increasingly desperation because the TTP is now attacking soft targets, such as homes of law-enforcement officials in large cities, which are bound to be relatively unsecured, as opposed to government or military installations.
Pakistain has suffered 305 suicide kabooms, the death of 4,847 people and injury of 10,227 others at the hands of al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked gunnies in the aftermath of the 2001 terror attacks on New York and Washington. Bloody Karachi, Pakistain's largest city, main seaport and key financial center, which is also the capital of Sindh province, is one of the biggest sources of the Pak Taliban's funds through criminal activities like kidnappings and bank robberies.

Bloody Karachi has not seen as many TTP-sponsored suicide kabooms as other major cities, but it is home to thousands of the group's faceless myrmidons who have decamped army operations in the tribal areas. The first vehicle-borne suicide kaboom in Pakistain was carried out in Bloody Karachi on May 8, 2002, when a human bomb drove his car into the side of a bus outside the Sheraton Hotel, killing 14 people including 11 French naval technicians.

Aslam Khan, the police senior superintendent who heads the anti-extremist cell of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Bloody Karachi, survived the September 19 attack after a double-cabin vehicle packed with C4 explosives was rammed into the main gate at his residence in the heavily guarded Defence Housing Area at 7.30 am. Eight people including six coppers, a woman and a child, were killed. The proscribed TTP quickly grabbed credit for the attack, saying Aslam had been responsible for the arrest of many of its key operatives.

"We will continue targeting all such coppers who are involved in the killing of our jihadi comrades," TTP front man Ehsanullah Ehsan said when claiming responsibility for the attack.

The deaths of family members and neighbors would seem of little consequence to the attackers.

The attack came less than two weeks after another human bomb on September 7 rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the Quetta residence of the deputy inspector general of the Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
Frontier Corps, killing his wife and 24 others in a high-security zone in the city.

The Frontier Corps deputy inspector was targeted bomb because he was involved in the capture of Younis al-Mauritani, a senior member of al-Qaeda's external operations council, and his two aides, Abdul Ghaffar Al-Shami and Messara al-Shami. The three al-Qaeda operatives were tossed in the calaboose in a suburb of Quetta during a joint operation between the Balochistan Frontier Corps and the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate.

The bombing was the TTP's second attempt in 10 months to assassinate Aslam Khan, who has repeatedly vowed to break the back of the TTP and crush its strong network in the port city, where it works in tandem with sectarian and bad boy groups. Monday's attack, which destroyed or damaged neighboring houses and killed many innocents in the posh area of Bloody Karachi, has once again highlighted that the war against al-Qaeda-linked Taliban gunnies is no longer confined to the tribal belt of Pakistain but has reached the urban centers - be it Quetta, Beautiful Downtown Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore or Bloody Karachi.

The previous attempt to assassinate Aslam Khan was also made by a human bomber, who rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the Bloody Karachi headquarters of the CID on November 11, 2010. Aslam and other officers of the CID - Fayyaz Khan, Omar Shahid and Mazhar Mashwani - who oversee the anti-extremism cell and run counter-terrorism operations in the port city, beat feet unhurt. The attack began as an armed assault and ended with a truck bomb that killed at least 20 people and injured over 100 others. The CID building was being used to interrogate suspects belonging to TTP and other banned bad boy groups. The attack was carried out a day after Aslam had tossed in the calaboose six activists of the TTP-linked sectarian-cum jihadi group - Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
(LeJ).

Aslam and his team members largely succeeded in breaking the TTP network in Bloody Karachi by arresting three successive ameers of the Bloody Karachi chapter of the group in recent months - Akhtar Zaman Mehsud and his successors Bahadur Khan Momand and Maulvi Saeed Anwer. This invited the wrath of the Bloody Karachi chapter of the TTP, which has links with faceless myrmidons in the country's tribal areas and with al-Qaeda and several banned bad boy and sectarian outfits. Therefore, the TTP's claim of responsibility soon after the September 19 attack came as little surprise.

Aslam told news hounds he had been receiving threats from the al-Qaeda-linked Pak Taliban. "I was sleeping when they carried out this cowardly act and rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into my house," Aslam told the media outside his ruined residence. "But let me tell you, I will not be cowed. I will teach a lesson to generations of these bad boys. I did not know that these bully boyz were such cowards that they would attack sleeping children."

Due to the nature of his work, the enemies of Aslam in the jihadi circles of Bloody Karachi are as countless and varied as the techniques he himself has used to arrest them. They range from the TTP and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) to drug-runners and hit mans belonging to several major political parties, especially the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
(MQM).

Well-informed circles in the security agencies said the Bloody Karachi suicide attack was an attempt to demoralize law enforcement agencies, especially the Sindh Police CID, which in recent days has identified more than two dozen myrmidon bad boy and sectarian outfits in Bloody Karachi for a possible crackdown once the hunt for politically-backed hit mans is over. Prominent alongside the TTP and LeJ among these sectarian and jihadi groups are also: Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al Alami, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistain, Sunni Tehrik, Daawat-e-Islami, Harkatul Mujahideen, Harkatul Mujahideen Al Alami, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Jamaatul Furqaan, Harkatul Jehadul Islami, Jundallah, Tehrik-e-Islami , Lashkar-e-Muhammadi, Lashkar-e-Islami, Mehdi Militia, Hezbullies, and Tawheed Brigade.

Security sources said some TTP-linked elements had distributed a leaflet in various outskirts of Bloody Karachi in the first week of July, carrying a "hit list" of anti-jihadi personalities, threatening that they would be killed along with family members. The pamphlet justified jihad and urged "pure Mohammedans" to rise up against elements creating problems for jihadis who were described as the defenders of Islam and Pakistain.

According to the leaflet, the definition of a criminal had been changed in recent times. "Previously, it was used for robbers and dacoits, but after 9/11 the term is being used for those who are sincere with the religion of Islam and want to wage jihad against the forces of the infidel."

Those declared "liable to be killed" in the TTP pamphlet, along with the CID's Aslam Khan, included: Capital City Police Officer Bloody Karachi Saud Mirza; CID superintendent Fayyaz Khan; Anti-Violent Crime Unit Chief Farooq Awam; Special Investigation Unit chief Raja Omar Khattab; former Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Wasim Ahmed; Sunni Deobandi scholar Mufti Mohammad Naeem, Shia scholar Mirza Yousuf Baig; and Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Haider Abbas Rizvi. Television artists and anchors and some Bloody Karachi-based journalists were also on the list.

The TTP front man, Ehsanullah Ehsan, while claiming responsibility for the Bloody Karachi suicide kaboom, stated, "Aslam Khan was on our hit list and his name will only be removed after he is killed. But let me tell you frankly, he is not the only one on our hit list. There are many other officers of the Bloody Karachi Police on our hit list who will be targeted and killed soon for having sided with the forces of the infidel".

The SIU claimed to have jugged a suspected Islamic exemplar from Ayub Goth with a huge cache of ammunition and explosives, as well as enough material to prepare two suicide jackets.

The suspect, identified as Imamuddin alias Maviya, was reportedly planning to carry out a car boom attack together with three of his accomplices on the Ashura processions.

A senior SIU officer said the arrest was a major breakthrough, which would help in ensuring security during Muharram.

The investigation unit is making all-out efforts to arrest Shaukat Sardar, who has a head money of Rs 500,000, Qasim Rasheed alias Ganja, Shamim alias Shani, and Rashid.

The nabbed Islamic exemplar, who was wanted in several criminal cases, disclosed during initial investigation that he was involved in the Sheraton Hotel blast and Allama Hassan Turabi's murder. Sources claimed that Imamuddin was jugged from PIB Colony a few days ago, but the SIU had disclosed his arrest on Wednesday.

Iraq
Car bomb kills at least 36 in Baghdad
2010-01-25
At least 36 people were killed and 71 injured Monday in multiple bomb explosions in the hotel district of central Baghdad, a ministry official said.

Three massive car bombs shook the Iraqi capital in quick succession. The first blast went off in the car park of the Sheraton Hotel and the second was in front of Babylon Hotel.

The third blast took place shortly after when a minibus drove into the Al Hamra Hotel compound and blew up 160 feet short of the main entrance, eyewitnesses said. The bomb left a crater 30 feet wide and 12 feet deep.

The Iraqi army were trying to remove families that were trapped inside near-by houses and extract wounded from the second floor of the hotel.

Monday's explosions came less than six weeks from a March 7 general election which both U.S. forces and Iraqi politicians had warned could be a focus for violence. The latest violence also occurred less than two weeks after security forces sealed off Baghdad after being tipped-off that bomb-laden cars had been parked in the city.

Insurgents, weakened in the past year, have in the past six months changed tactics and mounted successful high-profile attacks on "hard" targets such as government buildings, rather than so-called soft targets in civilian areas.

The blast came just before Saddam Hussein's cousin, "Chemical Ali" Hassan al-Majid, was excecuted.
