'Bushra Bibi poisoned in Bani Gala sub-jail', Imran Khan tells court |
2024-04-03 |
[GEO.TV] Incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan Tuesday apprised the court that his wife and ex-first lady Bushra Bibi was poisoned at the Bani Gala sub-jail. The PTI founder made the claim during a hearing of the £190 million settlement case in Rawalpindi's Adiala jail. Khan informed the accountability court judge that the former first lady had marks on her skin and tongue after "being poisoned". He sought the court’s order for an inquiry into the incident and a complete medical checkup of Bushra Bibi. Khan said: “I know who is behind it." He insisted that the medical examination of the former first lady should be done by Dr Asim Yunus, a doctor at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. At this, the court directed Khan to submit a written application seeking the medical examination of Bushra Bibi. In February this year, the PTI expressed grave concern over what it claimed serious threats to the life and health of Bushra, who has been put under house arrest at Bani Gala. PTI Women Wing President Kanwal Shauzab pointed out that Bushra had serious health issues due to the harmful and substandard food being provided to her. PTI lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha had claimed that Bushra’s “health worsened and she got mouth ulcers after she was given a spicy meal” during her house arrest. Bushra was placed under house arrest at her husband’s Islamabad mansion after she and her husband were convicted of graft allegations. Khan and his wife were sentenced to 14 years in jail in a case that relates to accusations the ex-premier undervalued gifts from a state repository and gained profits from selling them while he held the country’s top office. 'Toilet cleaner mixed in food' During her interaction with journalists before the court appearance, the former first lady claimed that “three drops of toilet cleaner” were mixed in her food on the eve of Shab-e-Meraj. She revealed that the food and water served by the jail authority tasted bitter. Responding to a question, Bushra said that “someone” had told her in jail that toilet cleaner was mixed in her food. She, however, refused to disclose the name of the official. “My eyes swell up, I feel pain in my chest and stomach,” the former first lady claimed. Research showed that the health of a toilet cleaner victim worsens after one month, she also insisted. Bushra further said that the windows at Bani Gala were kept closed earlier but now they are open for some time. |

Taliban leader being treated for cancer in Lahore |
2016-01-03 |
In a statement to the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan, Shireen M. Mazari, spokesperson for the chairman of Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan, said on Saturday that misunderstandings had arisen out of a remark about the treatment of an Afghan Taliban leader at the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Lahore. This came after media reports emerged Saturday that Khan reportedly confirmed that a top Taliban leader, who has cancer, was treated for his illness at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center, a hospital in the Pakistani city of Lahore. The reports sparked outrage among Afghan political analysts, who said this confirms Pakistan's support of militant groups including that of the Taliban group. But in the statement, Mazari said: "I wish to clear any misunderstanding that may have arisen out of a remark he made in a television interview about the treatment of an Afghan Taliban leader at the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Lahore – which was subsequently taken out of context and also misinterpreted by segments of the Pakistani media." "The chairman was discussing the issue of free treatment of 70 percent of cancer patients at the Shaukat Khanum hospital and that a number of these patients are Pathans including Afghans. That is one reason why the chairman decided to raise funds to build the second Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Peshawar." Mazari went on to say: "In passing, he also referred to receiving a letter from an Afghan Taliban leader who had apparently received treatment at the Lahore hospital." Mazari said: "The hospital does not ask for political or religious affiliations of its patients who all receive the same quality care whether it is free or being paid for, the revelation that an Afghan Taliban leader had been treated at the hospital only came about when that person sent a thank you letter. At the time that he was undergoing treatment there was no information about his political or religious associations except that he was an Afghan in need of treatment." The statement went on to read: "So I hope you will understand that as a humanitarian hospital which offers free cancer treatment to 70 percent of its patients without discrimination, it is not possible for anyone to recognize, amongst the Afghans being treated, who is a Taliban and who is not. Nor would you or your government want us to stop offering treatment to Afghans who are our brethren and whom we have been hosting for over two decades now in Pakistan." |

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. According to a police source, the raid was conducted jointly by police and Frontier Constabulary and that 11 wireless sets, five walky-talkies, three chargers of electrical receivers, four batteries, one bag of potassium chloride, five rifles, two pistols and hundreds of cartridges were recovered from the arrested men. Among the arrested man was proclaimed offender Ghuncha Gul, an Afghan resident, who is wanted by Paharipura police in a murder case. The source said snuffies had spread all over Peshawar district and the raid had proved that thorough checking of every locality was a must. He said police had very limited resources and could not reach every place on their own unless the paramilitary troops offered special support. The source said many snuffies had shifted to the villages close to tribal and semi-tribal regions as they could easily move in case of any possibility of operation against them. Referring to a recent operation at Adezai, he said two snuffies had been killed in the village infuriating terrorists, who had tried in vain to attack police. The source said in the Shamshato Refugee Camp, there were people from tribal areas, who seemed to have involvement in terrorist acts in the capital city. When contacted, deputy superintendent of police Shaukat Khan said the arrested men were being interrogated. "We have information that there are some people associated with terrorist groups. Most of them belong to Afghanistan, while some are hailing from Bara and Tirah Valley," he said. The DSP said the law-enforcement agencies had cordoned off the area since Thursday morning and thoroughly checked movement of the people on the roads and streets and later conducted a raid on the camp. "The relevant officials are interrogating the arrested men and names of those found guilty of criminal activities will be made public very soon," he said. Mr Shaukat said a case against the arrested men had been registered. |

Imran Khan leaves hospital |
2013-05-24 |
[Pak Daily Times] Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan ![]() ... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five... left hospital on Wednesday, two weeks after getting injured in a fall at a rally for the general election. The 60-year-old politician was ordered to remain immobile in bed after he fractured vertebrae and a rib in a dramatic tumble from a hoist lifting him to a stage just days before the May 11 general election. Khwaja Nazir, a front man for the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital, where Imran was being treated, told AFP that he had been discharged on Wednesday and returned to his home in the city. "He would stay in his Lahore home for three days and then would be shifted to his home in Islamabad," Nazir said. "Doctors have advised him rest, for two more weeks." On Tuesday Imran took his first steps since the injury and a video on the hospital's Facebook page on Wednesday showed him walking gingerly but unaided from his third-floor room to the exit. According to the hospital front man, Imran Khan walked from his room on the third floor of the hospital to the exit on the ground floor. He added that Imran will continue to receive regular physiotherapy and will need to wear a spinal support for some weeks to come. The PTI chairman will gradually increase physical activity over the next few weeks with a return to his full functional capacity expected in approximately six to eight weeks, he said. |

PTI leadership making a mess of things in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa |
2013-05-17 |
[Dawn] From the looks of it, Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... is making a mess of it. A party that has come galloping to stake claim to the top elected slot in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa ... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central... , is found wanting on choosing a leader to lead it. And this is not a good beginning to begin with. The internal squabbling between two groups, ostensibly between the old guard and the new, is puzzling. Pervez Khattak, the MPA-elect from Nowshera, and a so-called new entrant to PTI, was the first to launch his efforts to put together a coalition government and contacted heads of political parties and bunch of newly-elected independent members. In come Mr Asad Qaisar, the MPA-elect from Swabi and the so-called old-guard, who together with a couple of other MPAs-elect launched his own efforts, contacting politicians and members. If this was not enough, the two sides issued conflicting statements, discrediting each other and attributing those statements to the party chairman, Imran Khan ![]() ... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree... . Who has the authority and the mandate to negotiate with the political parties on PTI's behalf and who has given the mandate to do so is not known. Not contended with this, someone within the PTI tried to pull a fast one, by "leaking" to the electronic media Asad Qaisar's name as its nominee for KP's chief minister. Later, a new spin was added to the puzzle: Khattak, it was said, was the parliamentary leader while Qaisar was the chief minister-in-waiting. As this jockeying became a joke, talk of a new third person began to do the rounds in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. -- the former PML era-minister for food and former district nazim ...small time big shot, the chief elected official of a local government in Pakistan, such as a district, tehsil, union council, or village council... , Haripur, Yousaf Ayub as Imran's possible choice for the chief minister. By his own admission, he is not part of the "lobbying game" and that he would abide by the party's decision, whoever it chooses to lodge at the Chief Minister House in KP. But even this did not put a stop to the rumour-feeding PTI mill which seems to be working overtime to churn one spin after another. The apparent jockeying for power between the party's central secretary general and his provincial president became to vicious that some within the party ventured out to suggest who was had Khan's pat on the back and who it was the cricketer-turned politician had no love lost for, in order to make the likely candidate for the chief minister obvious. It became so confusing that political parties locked in negotiations with the PTI began to wonder whether their interlocutors from the major player in KP had the real mandate to speak to them and if that was the case, who was this other guy pretending to speaking to them on Khan's behalf. So much did the issue muddled up that some of the newly-elected members began to start day-dreaming, desire taking the better of discipline. What is wrong with having a chief minister from Peshawar?" a bewildered newly-elected member from Peshawar asked. "Peshawar has given ten of the eleven provincial seats and four national seats to PTI. Don't you think Peshawar deserves to be given the rewarded for the remarkable feat?" one of them asked. But if this was not enough, the dole-outs to junior coalition partners and the choice of portfolios promised to them also became the bone of contention. Did the package-deal have Khan's support? There will be two senior ministers and one minister each from Jamaat-e-Islami ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... and the Qaumi Watan Party, party leaders in Peshawar said. But JI leader Prof Munawwar Hassan, who met with a recuperating Khan at Shaukat Khanum Hospital, announced afterwards that there would be three ministers each from JI and the QWP. JI, one PTI leader said, would get the finance, in addition to the all-too-important education. What has been agreed to the QWP, is not known, other than that in addition to berth in the cabinet, Sherpao's party would also get the slot of the deputy speaker, provincial assembly. Knowing Sherpao's political acumen, one could safely assume, he would not really settle for anything less important too. What will be the PTI left with is not known. But as one official asked, if the PTI is genuinely representative of the youth, why would it give the future of our youth and the upcoming generation to a junior partner. |
