Group claims Sharm al-Shaikh blasts
2005-07-23
A group citing ties to al-Qaida says it carried out the Sharm al-Shaikh bombings that have so far killed at least 62 83 people. The posting on a website came just hours after the series of deadly blasts in the Red Sea resort. The group, calling itself the Abdallah Azzam Brigades, al-Qaeda in Syria and Egypt, said that its "holy warriors targeted the Ghazala Gardens Hotel and the Old Market in Sharm al-Shaikh". The authenticity of the statement could not be verified.

The group is one of two that claimed responsibility for the 7 October bombings in the Sinai Peninsula at Taba and Ras Shitan that killed 34 people. "Your brothers, the holy warriors of the martyr Abd Allah Azzam Brigades succeeded in launching a smashing attack on the Crusaders, Zionists and the renegade Egyptian regime in Sharm al-Shaikh," the statement read. "We reaffirm that this operation was in response to the crimes committed by the forces of international evil, which are spilling the blood of Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan and Chechnya. We declare it loud and clear that we will not be frightened by the whips of the Egyptian torturers and we will not tolerate violation of our brothers' land of Sinai," the statement added in an apparent reference to tourists who travel from neighbouring Israel to Sinai Peninsula for holidays.

The Abd Allah Azzam Brigades are apparently named after Abd Allah Azzam, a Palestinian who led Islamic fighters in Afghanistan and was killed in 1989 by a roadside bomb, and was regarded as the one-time spiritual mentor of al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.
Yeah. Zawahiri had him bumped off, I believe. But it was just business.

Egypt plans summit to discuss Darfur
2005-04-04
What if they gave a summit and nobody came?
Leaders from Chad, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria and Sudan are to meet for a summit on 20 April in Egypt to discuss the troubled Sudanese region of Darfur, the Egyptian foreign minister said on Sunday. Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Gheit said that the summit, to take place in the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Shaikh, would "try to give a push to efforts for a solution" in the strife-torn region. Abul Gheit said that Egypt wanted the "continuation and completion of the Abuja peace talks" to end the conflict between the government and rebels, which has displaced two million people since it began in February 2003. Peace talks between the rebel groups in Darfur and the government are being sponsored by the African Union in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, but have yet to make progress. The talks were suspended last year after accusations by each side that the other was not abiding by the terms of an April ceasefire agreement they signed in the Chadian capital, Ndjamena.

Israeli troops kill Palestinian
2005-02-10
A Palestinian man has died after being shot by Israeli troops, the first casualty following a truce announced in Sharm al-Shaikh, Egypt. A Palestinian man died late on Wednesday hours after he was wounded by gunfire from a Gaza Jewish settlement. This marks the first conflict-related fatality since Israel and the Palestinians declared a truce a day ago, medics said. The 20-year-old from a Rafah refugee camp in southern Gaza was shot from the nearby illegal settlement of Atzmona, which has an Israeli army garrison. An Israeli military source said troops had fired warning shots, suspecting an infiltration attempt.

Hamas, Islamic Jihad to lie low
2005-02-10
Without endorsing the ceasefire declared at the landmark Middle East summit, Palestinian resistance groups have said they will hold off on attacking Israel for now. Two major groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, reacted on Wednesday to pledges by Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to end violence at the Sharm al-Shaikh summit. Both resistance groups said they were not bound by the truce. But the two did not seem ready to alienate Abbas when they reiterated their readiness to observe a one-month "period of calm" as agreed with the Palestinian leader in late January. "Hamas endorsed (the need for) calm and will respect that to allow Abbas to ease into his job and exert pressure on the enemy," a spokesman said.

Fatah calls for ceasefire
2005-02-07
Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas' ruling Fatah movement has reissued a call for a mutual ceasefire with Israel. "We are ready for a total ceasefire in the occupied territories and in Israel, in line with the roadmap [peace plan]," the group's 129-member revolutionary council said in a statement on Sunday. But Fatah also stressed "the Palestinians' right to self defence against attacks by the Israeli army", and their "right to resist the occupation, settlement and the construction" by Israel of a West Bank separation barrier.

Violence has dropped in recent weeks in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza amid Abbas' efforts to bring various Palestinian groups into a truce they say must be reciprocated by the Israeli army. Israel and the Palestinians have said they hoped to declare a formal halt to more than four years of violence at the summit in Sharm al-Shaikh. Abbas, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak and Jordan's King Abd Allah are expected to convene the summit.

Abbas talks with Fatah before summit
2005-02-05
Palestinian Authority chief Mahmud Abbas has held talks with the revolutionary council of his Fatah faction, days before the Palestinian leader meets Israeli prime minister. Abbas on Saturday conducted talks with more than 100 members of his Fatah party, and a top aide said the aim of the summit on Tuesday was to declare a mutual ceasefire between Palestinians and Israelis. "The revolutionary council of Fatah is holding an important meeting in the presence of Abu Mazin (Abbas) to discuss the summit, political and security questions and the results of contacts with Israel," said Palestinian Authority spokesman Nabil Abu Rudaina.

"We intend to work so that a mutual ceasefire can be declared between the Palestinians and Israelis at the Sharm al-Shaikh summit," he said. "We are also demanding the liberation of 8000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and hope to be able to sort out the differences in this respect in 48 hours," he added.
