US empire trying to capture Ukraine: Activist |
2014-11-03 |
[Iran Press TV] American peace activist Richard Becker says the US empire has been trying to capture Ukraine on order to bring it into its orbit. Becker, a leader of the ANSWER Coalition, a US-based protest umbrella group consisting of many antiwar and civil rights organizations, made the remarks on Sunday while commenting on a statement by Washington against the elections in eastern Ukraine. On Sunday, the people in Ukraine's Luhansk and Donetsk regions went to the polls to elect their leaders and parliamentarians. The United States said it would not recognize the elections in Ukraine's eastern regions, where the United Nations ...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society... says over 4,000 people have been killed. "We deplore the intent of separatists in parts of eastern Ukraine to hold illegitimate so-called local elections on Sunday," White House National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in the statement issued on Friday. |

West threatens Iran, targets nation with sanctions: A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition 'Analyst' |
2013-04-26 |
"They (Western countries) are threatening Iran and not only threatening Iran but carrying out the sanctions policy which is intended to harm the people as a whole," Richard Becker said in an interview with Press TV. He also criticized the double standards that prevail in the international arena, under which "the rich countries are free to do whatever they want to" while the countries which refuse to obey "the dictates of Washington...are battered." Becker noted that sanctions are intended "to deprive the people of adequate food and medicine just as it was done in Iraq." The analyst pointed to the humanitarian ramifications of the US-engineered sanctions against Iraq under the rule of former dictator, Saddam Hussein, which adversely affected the lives of millions of Iraqis. "Why isn't the United States and why aren't the US and the British governments, which did what they have done to Iraq, why aren't they held before international bodies and tried for their crimes against humanity?" Iran has repeatedly announced that Western sanctions against Tehran are effectively hindering the imports of medicines to the country, thereby jeopardizing the lives of millions of patients suffering from special diseases such as thalassemia, hemophilia, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and many others. Many analysts and experts have called for the trial of US President Barack Obama Why can't I just eat my waffle?... for the imposition of the illegal restrictions on Iran. |

Protesters prevent unloading of Israeli ship |
2010-06-20 |
(06-20) 12:35 PDT OAKLAND -- Hundreds of demonstrators, gathering at the Port of Oakland before dawn, prevented the unloading of an Israeli cargo ship. The demonstrators, demanding an end to Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, picketed at Berth 58, where a ship from Israel's Zim shipping line is scheduled to dock later today. The day shift of longshoremen agreed not to cross the picket line. International pressure to end the Gaza closure has increased since Israeli commandos stormed a flotilla of ships attempting to run the blockade on May 31, killing nine people. Last week, Israeli officials announced that they would loosen but not lift the blockade, allowing more goods to enter the impoverished area. "Our view is that the state of Israel can not engage in acts of piracy and kill people on the high seas and still think their cargo can go anywhere in the world," said Richard Becker, an organizer with ANSWER, one of many peace and labor groups involved in Sunday's action. Becker estimated that 600 to 700 people joined the demonstration, many of them arriving at 5:30 a.m. Oakland police, who estimated the crowd at 500 people, reported no arrests. The demonstrators want to block the unloading of the Zim ship for a full day. After convincing the day shift of longshoreman to honor the picket line, the demonstrators dispersed around 10 a.m., Becker said. The ship is scheduled to arrive in mid-afternoon, and the demonstrators plan to gather again around 4:30 p.m. and re-establish their picket line before the evening shift of longshoremen arrives at 6 p.m. |

International Action Center protests against war |
2001-09-23 |
"We are demonstrating because of the imminent danger of a wider war, one that could result in the deaths of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands more people," said organizer Richard Becker of the New York-based International Action Center, an anti-globalization organization. Becker and his cohorts say they are planning to swarm in front of the White House on Sept. 29. He said the groups will be protesting the treatment of Arabs and Muslims in America and President Bush's move to "expand police powers" in response to the hijacking of four U.S. commercial airplanes and the deaths of thousands of civilians. |

ANSWER sez it's not unpatriotic. Then what is it? |
2001-09-24 |
The coordinator of a national group organizing peace rallies in Washington, D.C., and other cities next Saturday said response to its efforts have been mixed. The group has received e-mails accusing it of being unpatriotic although fewer than expected while others are expressing gratitude, said Richard Becker, coordinator of International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism). "This is a time where people might think it is inappropriate to express anything other than condolences and grief over what has happened," Becker said. "But we believe our government is moving so rapidly down a dangerous course that it is potentially disastrous for us to not react at this time. Any reaction we have, however, must take into account the magnitude of the tragedy we have just seen." |
