In a separate incident, also yesterday, an alleged robber was killed in a shootout between his accomplices and members of the Rapid Action battalion (Rab) at Shibpur in Narayanganj.

In the incident at the botanical garden, the deceased was identified as Kalu, 29, son of late Ashraf Ali of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur.
Poor bastard. He never even got a alias. Most of his counterparts have two or three by the time Rab gets to them.
He was an active member of Shahdat gang in Mirpur area, police said, adding that ringleader Shahdat went into hiding in a neighbouring country a few years back.
Norway? Namibia? Nicaragua?
Injured Sub-inspector (SI) Sazedur Rahman and a constable of Shah Ali police station were taken to Rajarbagh Police Hospital where they were undergoing treatment, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Kalu from Beribadh Balurmath area around 11:00pm Sunday, said Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shah Ali police station Mohammad Zakir Hossain Mollah.

According to the script his confessional statement, police raided a cluster of bamboo near the Botanical garden where accomplices of Kalu gathered to commit a crime, the OC said.
"Stop! Or the bamboo cluster will shoot!"
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, his accomplices opened fire at police prompting them to fire back.
Who knew bamboo shoots with lead?
The OC further said police found Kalu with bullet injury after the shootout while his accomplices escaped the scene.
As if they'd never been there in the bamboo shoots ...
Kalu was accused in around seven cases with Mirpur Police station, he said.

Police rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctors declared him dead.
"Whaddaya got, Quince?"
"Sudden onset acute bamboo poisoning, Sam. Send him on back to the cooler."
Police recovered two machetes, two knives and a handful of splinters bullet from the spot.

OC Mollah said, "The members of Shahdat Bahini work in different groups. Some of them issue threats, some collect extorted money while some others ensure security of gang members and hand over the extorted money to Shahdat." He said Kalu had been a toll collector of the gang in Mirpur and Shah Ali areas.

Akbar Hossain Babu, brother of Kalu, ...
Oh just stop right there. Babu, brother of Kalu? Who names these guys?
... told reporters at the DMC morgue that a police team led by SI Jalil and SI Sajedur picked up Kalu from a tea stall near his residence at Dakkhin Bisil in the capital Sunday evening.
Chaiwalla!
His younger brother Delwar along with locals went to the police station where the police informed them that Kalu was accused in a case under speedy trial tribunal act, Babu added.
VERY speedy trial. The verdict and sentence were quite prompt as well.
Delwar, talking to The Daily Star, said that as the police took Kalu out of the police station around 10:00pm, he asked Delwar to wait for him at the station as the police would bring most of him back a few hours later.
"I'll be back 'bro, the RAB wants me to go to an upazaila to encounter someone. No big deal, I could do this dead."
In the shootout at Narayangnaj, a group of robbers attacked a microbus carrying Rab-11 team in plain clothes from Shibpur. Mongal and his gang intercepted the microbus at around 3:00am at Ghoshirdia area in the upazila.

"Dr. Quincy, those can't be...?"

Locals identified the dead man as Mongal, leader of Mongal Bahini. Mongal, 30, was convicted in a murder case and an accused in other several cases including three murder cases with Shibpur and Raipura police stations in the district.

Dhaka hunts for top militants
2006-01-20
Security forces backed by army helicopters launched a massive hunt in areas along Bangladesh’s western border on Thursday after an intelligence tip off that top fugitive Islamist militants were hiding there, officials said. Some 1,000 police, troops and members of the elite Rapid Action battalion searched several villages near the town of Kushtia, some 300 kilometres from the capital Dhaka, while four helicopters patrolled the sky, police and witnesses said. “Forces have been conducting block raids in a wide region of Kushtia but have yet to catch the militants,” one police officer said.

Officials said they were looking for Shayek Abdur Rahman, supreme leader of the outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen blamed for a recent wave of bombings, including suicide attacks that killed at least 30 people and wounded 150 in the past few months. Police were also searching for Siddikul Islam Bangla Bhai, leader of another banned Islamic group, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh, and a close comrade of Shayek Rahman. “We have tips that Shayek Abdur Rahman is hiding in the area. Maybe Bangla Bhai is also with him,” another police officer said.

It's over: An operation to find two suspected Islamic militants said to be hiding in Bangladesh's western Kushtia district has been called off, police say. The hunt ended because Abdur Rahman and Bangla Bhai from the banned Jamaat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) could not be found. Police say they have detained 10 people in the operation. One thousand security personnel were involved in night-long operations, police chief Abdul Quyum said.

Earlier, security forces, including elite anti-crime force the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), had cordoned off a 5-sq km area in Kushtia district. Police would not confirm if any of the 10 detained included JMB members.

Dhaka arrests July 2000 bomb mastermind
2005-10-03
Security forces in Bangladesh have arrested Mufti Abdul Hannan, the alleged leader of the Bangladesh chapter of the Islamist militant group Harkatul Jihad, at a hideout in the capital Dhaka, police said on Sunday. They said Hannan had been in hiding since police found a powerful bomb, believed to be planted by Harkatul Jihad activists in July 2000, near a rally that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina addressed in the western Kotalipara area. Police recovered the remote-controlled bomb before it could be detonated and Hasina was not hurt.
Gotta find that plump lady graphic for events like this...
On Saturday night, members of elite Rapid Action battalion arrested Hannan at a house in Dhaka’s Madhya Badda area and also seized explosives and bomb-making materials. “Hannan is being interrogated,” a senior police officer said, but would provide no further details.
You don't want to know. Don't look, Ethel...
Police told reporters that Hannan, Harkatul’s operation commander in Bangladesh, was among the country’s ‘top terrorists’ they had been looking for years, but were not immediately sure if he or his men were involved in the Aug 17 countrywide serial bombings of this year.
Lemme guess...

Tales from the Bangladesh Police Blotter

Rapid Action Battalion making a list
Rapid Action battalion (Rab) has taken a new move to record profiles of "most wanted criminals". on computer. The profiles will be brought under computer network through special programming.
I'll bet the RAB will get theirs working before the FBI does.
Initially, profiles of two criminals listed with each thana in Khulna metropolitan city and one in each police station in the district will be prepared . According to a highly placed police sources, Rab will do the job without any help from police. Our own intelligence will collect data and prepare the profiles containing photos, addresses, number and nature of crimes and background of criminals, they said. The profiles will also contain data on their wealth and property, sources of income and name of their godfathers. Strict secrecy is being maintained in preparing the profiles correctly by Rab intelligence branch. Once complete, the elite force will swing into action against criminals.
That's why we haven't had many "crossfires" lately, they're waiting for the paperwork to be finished
The source further said criminals using cell phones will be tracked down by tapping their phones and using other sophisticated digital equipment. This will definitely help Rab arrest wanted criminals quickly, they hoped. Previous criminal records (PCR) of wanted persons kept in computer network will help the Rab in containing murders and subversive activities. Other metropolitan cities are also being brought under this new plan by Rab with the help of its intelligence units. Outdated techniques being applied by law enforcers are absolutely ineffective as hardened criminals are availing the opportunity of modern technology including cell phone and internet to commit crimes, the RAB source said.
