10 Arrested for Afghan Acid Attack
2008-11-26
KABUL, Afghanistan -- The police in Kandahar Province arrested 10 Taliban militants they said were involved in an attack this month on a group of Afghan schoolgirls whose faces were doused with acid, officials in Kandahar said Tuesday.

The officials said that the militants, who were Afghan citizens, had confessed to their involvement in the attack on the schoolgirls and their teachers on Nov. 12 and that a high-ranking member of the Taliban had paid the militants 100,000 Pakistani rupees ($1,275) for each girl they managed to burn.

The girls were assaulted by two men on a motorcycle, apparently because the girls had been attending high school. The men drove up beside them and splashed their faces with what appeared to be battery acid.

Zalmay Ayobi, the spokesman for Gen. Rahmatullah Raufi, the governor of Kandahar, said the orders to carry out the attack had been given from a foreign country, although he did not identify it.

The militants were arrested by the police last week. Mr. Ayobi said a joint delegation from the Interior Ministry and the office of the attorney general in the capital, Kabul, had arrived in Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, on Monday to evaluate the cases of the suspects. The delegation, led by the deputy interior minister along with the governor of Kandahar, announced Tuesday that the suspects confessed their involvement in the attack, Mr. Ayobi said. He said Afghanistan's courts would decide the attackers' fate after the investigation was completed.

At least two of the girls were hospitalized by the attack, their faces blackened and burned. The attack was condemned at the time by Laura Bush, who described the Taliban as "cowardly and shameful" for carrying out the attack. "The Taliban's continued terror attacks threaten the progress that has been made in Afghanistan," the first lady said in a statement, adding, "These cowardly and shameful acts are condemned by honorable people in the United States and around the world."

Mrs. Bush has been an advocate for the women of Afghanistan during her husband's tenure. She has visited Afghanistan three times to put a spotlight on development and women's issues, most recently in June, a trip cloaked in secrecy so she would not become a target of terrorists.

Six dead as tanker bomb rocks Kandahar
2008-11-13
A bomb-filled tanker exploded outside the office of the provincial council in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Wednesday, killing six people and wounding 42.

Wali Karzai, brother of President Hamid Karzai and head of the council, was in the building at the time but was unharmed. ìI am fine and safe,î he told reporters later. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast.

A spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, told AFP by telephone that the target was the provincial council. The explosives-filled tanker dug four metres deep and eight metres wide crater into the road just outside the council building.

"Six people, including an intelligence employee were killed, two intelligence guards and three passers-by, including a woman were injured," Kandahar province governor Rahmatullah Raufi told a press conference

Fifteen Taliban, girl killed in Afghan clashes
2007-06-14
Fifteen Taliban and a young girl were reported killed on Wednesday in clashes in Afghanistan as US defence officials said NATO needed more soldiers and equipment to fight the insurgents.

Twelve militants were killed in the southern province of Zabul in fighting on Tuesday to which the Afghan army called in foreign warplanes, the army’s southern commander, Rahmatullah Raufi, said. Four more were arrested. Another battle erupted in the province overnight when Taliban attacked a police post nearby, the Mizan district chief said. The fighting lasted two hours and three Taliban were killed and five wounded, Mohammad Younus said. A rocket-propelled grenade landed on a civilian house during the battle, killing a girl aged about seven, he added. A Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, confirmed both clashes but not the death tolls.

Senior US defence officials said that Defence Secretary Robert Gates would press European allies for more troops and equipment for Afghanistan at a two-day NATO meeting in Brussels starting on Thursday. “There certainly is a need for more combat forces,” one official said. “There is also a need for more enablers. Helicopters is one of them. Equipment is another.”

Meanwhile, a foreign soldier went missing on Wednesday and the Taliban said it had kidnapped him. US military spokesman Major Chris Belcher said the soldier belonged to the US-led coalition forces and was missing in an area of the Helmand province. He said he had no further details. Speaking from Quetta an unknown location, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf told Reuters that members of the group had kidnapped the soldier, though he said the man belonged to NATO-led forces, and the Taliban were establishing his nationality.

Earlier on Wednesday, a United Arab Emirates government official said a member of a team providing security for a UAE aid mission had gone missing in Afghanistan. “We can confirm that a UAE citizen who is involved in providing security for UAE humanitarian aid in Afghanistan is currently unaccounted for,” the official said in Dubai.

18 Taliban killed in clashes with Afghan, US troops
2007-04-25
Afghan police and US-led coalition forces clashed with Taliban insurgents in western Afghanistan early on Tuesday, leaving 18 suspected militants dead and four other people wounded, an official said. The latest violence occurred with Afghan officials claiming their forces had trapped up to 200 Taliban in a southern village, possibly including the militia’s military commander, Mullah Dadullah, a claim later denied by the Taliban.

After a winter lull in the violence, Afghan, NATO and US-led forces have stepped up operations in recent weeks hoping to pre-empt a feared spring offensive by militants that threatened the already shaky grip of President Hamid Karzai’s government. Afghan and coalition forces launched an overnight operation late Monday in Bakwa district in Farah province, said a spokesman for the provincial police Chief Baryalai Khan. He said two suspected militants were killed and two wounded, while two police personnel were also wounded and eight suspected militants arrested in the ongoing operation. Afghan and NATO soldiers setting up an ambush for rebel fighters in the early hours of Tuesday in the southern province of Zabul followed this. “In the resulting exchange of gunfire, 11 Taliban were killed. There were no Afghan casualties,” said General Rahmatullah Raufi. Five more “enemy elements” were killed in the northeastern province of Kunar in another operation.

Meanwhile in the relatively calm north, a bomb exploded outside the Sari Pul provincial governor’s home on Tuesday morning with no casualties, said Governor Eqbal Munib. He said it was the third attempt on his life in the past year in an area where attacks are generally rare.

Afghan police and government officials said up to 200 suspected Taliban had been surrounded in the mountain village of Keshay in Uruzgan province for three days. The Taliban had gathered in the area for a meeting. Deputy Interior Security Minster Abdul Hadi Khalid told a security commission in Parliament on Monday that it was “possible that Mullah Dadullah was among” those who were attending the meeting. He said Afghan officials had demanded that the Taliban surrender or face military action. He did not mention any deadline for them to surrender.

Provincial police Chief Gen Muhammad Qasim Khan said NATO troops were also involved in the siege but NATO and the US-led coalition said Tuesday they had no information to support the Afghans’ account. A Taliban spokesman in the south, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, admitted the Taliban were trapped but denied that Dadullah was in the area.

In other violence, assailants abducted and beheaded an Afghan intelligence service employee and struck one of the agency’s vehicles with a remote-controlled bomb in a separate attack that killed six employees and wounded three, officials said.

Peaceful solution sought for Taliban-occupied Afghan town
2007-02-07
Taliban fighters were holed up in a southern Afghan town for a fifth day as officials said they wanted to end the occupation without military action that could cost civilian lives.

NATO planes on Sunday dropped government leaflets into Musa Qala, which was captured Friday, urging the rebels to leave or face action. Thousands of people have already left, fearing bombing raids by NATO warplanes. "The government is still trying to find a peaceful solution to the problem to avoid civilian casualties," interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary told AFP on Tuesday.

General Rahmatullah Raufi said the army was on a state of alert but was awaiting the outcome of negotiations between tribal elders and the Taliban. "The elders want to solve the issue peacefully. If they fail, then government will use military means to take control of the town," he said.
Afghan military corp commander for the south, General Rahmatullah Raufi, said the army was on a state of alert but was awaiting the outcome of negotiations between tribal elders and the Taliban. "The elders want to solve the issue peacefully. We respect that and we are waiting. If they fail, then government will use military means to take control of the town," he said.

Another military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the government was "waiting for as many civilians to leave the town as possible to limit the possibility of civilian casualties from military operations."

Scores of Taliban militants stormed Musa Qala late Thursday, breaking a controversial deal in September which saw British troops agree not to enter a five-kilometre (three-mile) radius around the town. The local elders had appointed an auxiliary police force, but there had been no direct government presence in the town.

The official said there would be no more such deals in the future. "If the Taliban leave or not, police and army forces will go to the town this time," he said.

Bomb suspects arrested in Afghanistan
2007-01-20
AUTHORITIES in Afghanistan's southern city of Kandahar said Saturday they had arrested 11 suicide bombers in the past week, including two Pakistan nationals. Kandahar's intelligence chief Abdul Qayoom said nine alleged suicide bombers were arrested in various parts of the troubled city in the past week.

“They wanted to carry out attacks in different locations of Kandahar province. They were arrested with cars and explosives,” he said.

Two more were arrested yesterday, provincial governor Assadullah Khalid said. They were Pakistan nationals from Baluchistan province and had confessed, he said.

Meanwhile ...

The NATO-led military force in the province said meanwhile one of its vehicles was struck by an explosive device but there were no injuries to the troops. Five Dutch soldiers with the International Security Assistance Force were wounded in a similar attack in Uruzgan province on Friday, the Dutch news agency ANP said. ISAF confirmed the casualties but not their nationality.

In another attack similar to others blamed on Taliban last year, an explosion ripped through a tanker supplying fuel from Pakistan to the US main base in Kandahar and set ablaze several others late yesterday, the military said. The blast was likely caused by an explosive device. The trucks were parked outside the base before being allowed to enter, Afghan army general Rahmatullah Raufi said.

5 killed, 4 injured by blasts in Afghanistan
2007-01-05
Five Afghan militiamen were killed and four others injured when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in volatile southern Afghanistan, said a senior military official on Thursday. The militiamen, hired by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to help with security, were killed on Wednesday in southern Uruzgan province’s Taliban-dominated Charchino district, said Afghan General Rahmatullah Raufi.

Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi called AFP from Quetta an unknown location and said that the landmine was planted by Taliban rebels. “We had put the mine to target the foreign and Afghan troops. It was detonated by a remote-controlled device,” said Ahmadi, who often calls media to claim attacks on behalf of the Taliban.

US-led forces 'kill 65 Talebunnies'
2006-06-24
US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan say they have killed at least 65 Taleban terrorists militants in recent offensives in the south. Coalition and Afghan forces attacked a large group of terrorists militants and fought a three-hour battle in Zharie district in Kandahar province on Friday.

Troops fought a five-hour battle on the same day with Taleban terrorists fighters in neighbouring Uruzgan province. A statement released by US-led coalition forces and the Afghan National Army said that in the fighting in Zharie district several terrorists militants ran away fled to nearby villages and took civilians with them as human shields.
Brave, brave, Lions of Islam™.
It said that around 40 terrorists insurgents were killed in the fighting in Uruzgan province after troops exchanged fire for more than five hours with terrorists extremists hiding in an orchard north-east of Tirin Kot, the Uruzgan capital.

The Afghan army commander for the south, Gen Rahmatullah Raufi, confirmed to AFP news agency that a battle had taken place in the area. He said about 20 Taleban terrorists members were killed and 18 wounded. The general said three coalition soldiers were hurt in the clash. Rifles, machine guns and five rocket-launchers were seized.

Last week, coalition forces announced a major offensive, codenamed "Operation Mountain Thrust", against Taleban positions in the south. Military officials say the operation has seen significant attacks on Taleban hideouts. "The Afghan National Army and coalition forces continue to demonstrate how well they work together to defeat our common enemies," coalition spokesman Lt Col Paul Fitzpatrick said. "Afghan and coalition forces will continue to place heavy pressure on Taleban terrorists insurgents hiding in southern Afghanistan in support of Operation Mountain Thrust."

Afghan violence claims 32 lives
2006-06-22
(KUNA) -- At least 32 people were killed in a spate of violence in Afghanistan as British forces indicated they had regained control of a district from Taliban insurgents in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday. Separately four Canadian soldiers were injured in a mine blast while a suicide bomber and one civilian were killed in a bungled attack on a Canadian convoy Wednesday evening in the volatile Kandahar province.

A spokesman for the UK military said paratroopers were dropped in the Sangin district of Helmand province early Wednesday morning. The district was occupied by Taliban fighters and the Afghan police requested the UK troops to assist them. The spokesman said the British and Afghan forces were backed by apache helicopters but the insurgents vacated the area before their arrival and not a single shot was fired.
"Take that, infidels! We bravely flee at your approach! We fearlessly vacate the premises! So there!"
"Curly-toed slippers not failing! Working just fine!"
In the eastern province of Kunar, the US forces opened fire at a private vehicle carrying the personnel of government-backed tribal militia killing three of them and injuring two others. Interior Ministry's spokesman Yousuf Stanizai said the five people were traveling in a private car and were mistaken by the US soldiers for Taliban or other terrorists. Regretting the incident, the coalition forces said their soldiers inadvertently killed three un-uniformed members of the regional "Auxiliary Police" in Pech district of Kunar. Coalition's spokesman Lt Col Paul Fitzpatrick said: "We deeply regret this case of mistaken identity. Unfortunately, the police didn't properly communicate their intent or heed the signs placed before the checkpoint to proceed slowly."
Thereby exhibiting a fatal inability to follow instructions.
In southern parts, where the US-led coalition forces are carrying out the massive "Operation Mountain Thrust", Afghan and coalition forces said they had killed 26 insurgents in late night and pre-dawn attacks in the southern areas. General Rahmatullah Raufi, commander of Afghan forces in the southern region, while briefing journalists, said Afghan and coalition forces attacked a Taliban hideout in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province last night. He said 20 militants were killed in the operation while the military also recovered huge quantity of weapons. He said the ground forces were supported by coalition's helicopters, which bombed hideouts of the militants.
"Ha ha! Take that, infidels! We bravely flee at your — Aaaaaiiiieeee!"
In Zabul province, the commander said six militants were killed and their five colleagues were captured alive.
"Don't kill me! Please don't kill me!"
Meanwhile, four Canadian soldiers were injured when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Shah Walikot district of the Afghanistan's volatile Kandahar province on Wednesday. Coalition's spokesman Major Innis said the wounded soldiers were shifted to the coalition medical facility at Kandahar airport, where condition of one of them was serious. In the same province, a suicide bomber and one civilian were killed and seven others wounded in a botched up attack on a Canadian military convoy Wednesday evening. Provincial government's spokesman Daud Ahmadi said the Canadian soldiers remained unhurt.

2006-06-13
Afghan and United States-led foreign forces have killed 27 Taleban fighters in the latest clashes in the worst violence Afghanistan has seen since the Taleban were ousted in 2001.

Rahmatullah Raufi, a government army commander in the Afghan south, said a brother-in-law of fugitive Taleban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar was “most probably” among those killed in the fighting on Sunday night in the country’s south. “Most probably, Amanullah, the brother-in-law of Mullah Omar, who was also keeping his finances, was also killed,” Raufi said yesterday.

He said 15 Taleban fighters were killed in the clashes in Deh Rawood district in the southern province of Uruzgan, while 12 militants were killed in an airstrike by US-led forces in Panjwai district of southern Kandahar province. A spokesman for US-led forces said they were checking the reports.
