Imran sees lack of compressive policy in Swat
2009-05-23
[Geo News] Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan Friday said that military operation was not a solution of any issue, adding a compressive policy was also lacking in an ongoing operation against the militants in restive Swat valley.
Why's it work for the Taliban, then?
Addressing a news conference following the party's Central Executive Committee meeting here, Khan said security forces should stop carrying out bombardment in the valley. The bombing, he said, is causing more losses to the lives and properties of the civilians. The PTI chief stated that there was no Taliban in the country when armed forces were sent into Waziristan on the demand of the United States.
"They were... ummm... something else."
Khan stressed the need to frame an independent foreign policy of the country. Khan further said that an all parties' conference should be called early on Balochistan issue. Criticizing President Asif Ali Zardari on his recent foreign tours, he said that the country was in the grip of several problems, while the president was on a world tour.

No possibility of Talibanisation in Pakistan: PTI
2009-04-18
[Geo News] Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Friday said that the secret behind success of Taliban was provision of speedy and affordable justice. However, he ruled out the possibility of Talibanisation in the country. Speaking to reporters in Lahore, he said that injustice has disappointed the masses. Khan said: "The state is responsible for the delivery of speedy and cheap justice." The PTI chief said MQM chief Altaf Hussain was bound to violate the Swat truce deal to cover his crimes. On this occasion, former federal minister Yasin Watto's sons, Zafar Watto, Javed Watto and Tariq Watto announced to join the Tehrik-e-Insaf.

Sharif heads for Islamabad as rebellion fears haunt Pakistan
2009-03-15
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan plunged deeper into a political chaos on Sunday night as a defiant Nawaz Sharif, joined by tens of thousands of supporters in Lahore, was headed towards Islamabad for a mass sit-in front of Parliament on Monday amid reports that IGP of Punjab province's police and other senior officials had resigned and joined his 'long march' for restoration of the Constitution.

Heading for a showdown with the Government, Sharif, the PML-N leader and a former premier, defied his house arrest in Lahore as one of Pakistan's biggest civil disobedience movement unfolded with hundreds of stone-throwing anti-government protesters fighting pitched battles with police in the capital of Punjab province. The Punjab Deputy Attorney General was also reported to have resigned.

As Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani met Army Chief General Ashfaq Gilani to discuss the escalating situation, the protests by lawyers and PML-N supporters for restoration of judges sacked in 2007 by the then President Pervez Musharraf gathered steam and threatened to spiral out of control after Sharif defied the house arrest.

Emerging from his Model Town residence, Sharif who his party supporters said was ordered to be placed under house arrest for three days along with his brother Shabaz Sharif urged people to defy restrictions and join the 'long march'.

"Brothers, do not be scared or worried. These obstacles are temporary. We must remove them and only then can we reach our destination," he said.

Denounced his house arrest order as illegal, Sharif told his flag-waving and chanting supporters, "These are the decisive moments." "After 1947 this is the second time that the country needs you," the former premier said giving a call to oust President Asif Ali Zardari.

Sharif told supporters before leaving for the GPO chowk from his residece, "I tell every Pakistani youth that this is not the time to stay home; Pakistan is calling you to come and save me."

Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik, however, claimed no orders had been issued for putting the Sharif brothers in house arrest.

Sharif's younger brother and former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz, who was in the garrison city of Rawalpindi at a PML-N leader's residence, gave a slip to police and went into hiding before he could be served order for his house arrest, PML-N spokesman Siddique-ul-Farooq said.

Earlier, media reports had said that Shahbaz too was placed under house arrest.

The government also issued orders for the detention of Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed and cricket-turned- politician Imran Khan, the leader of Tehrik-e-Insaf party, both of whom are in hiding, local media reports said.

On the penultimate day of the long march which was launched on March 12, a large police contingent fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse lawyers, civil society activists and workers of the PML-N, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf and Jamaat-e-Islami parties, who had gathered at GPO Chowk in Lahore to join the rally to Islamabad.

Both sides pelted stones at each other and police in riot gear beat protesters with batons and sticks. Several persons were injured in the clashes and some protesters were also arrested and bundled into police vans.

Earlier this morning, police arrested over 20 PML-N activists who had gathered at a camp set up outside Sharif's residence at Model Town. Police also put under house arrest several other senior PML-N leaders, including Senator Ishaq Dar, parliamentarian Saad Rafiq and Zulfikar Khosa, the chief of the party's unit in Lahore. Dissident PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan, a key player in the lawyers' movement, too was placed under house arrest.

Supporters accompanying Sharif's swelling convoy smashed the windows of buses parked along the route. Others set fire to tyres, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky.

To thwart them, authorities parked trucks across major roads on the edge of the city, and riot police took up positions outside the railway station and government buildings.

Still, several thousands flag-waving demonstrators pushed past police barricades to reach the courts. Sone lawyers were seen cutting the barbed fire fences.

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf calls for debate on war on terror
2008-09-24
The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) has called for the government to take the nation into confidence on the ongoing war on terror.

"Now, we will have to face the challenge as a nation, as innocent women and children are being killed with impunity," PTI Media Adviser Zahid Hussain Kazmi said in a statement issued here on Monday. "Pakistan, today, is one of the most insecure countries because of the disastrous policies of the rulers following the 9/11 events," he said.

The PTI leader opposed allowing the US or British spy agencies to investigate into the Marriott suicide attack, asking if they were to probe into such acts, why the local agencies were being allocated hefty budgets.

IJT advised not to enforce ideology on students
2007-11-28
Following the publishing in the Urdu press of an article called ‘Tragedy of Punjab University’ written by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, a debate has started over the attitude of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) in Punjab University.

People are debating whether the article is a warning to the IJT by Qazi or a ‘face saving’ attempt by him to improve his party’s image. The IJT is JI’s students wing.

The article, which was printed on Tuesday, discloses that the IJT had pre-planned the manhandling and detaining of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in Punjab University on November 14.

The article reveals how Imran contacted JI bigwigs to appear on campus and discuss with students the emergency and call for the restoration of democracy. The article states that the JI and IJT disallowed Imran to go it alone, as the university is JI and IJT turf, and urged him to have a joint show with the IJT led by JI Punjab chief Liaqat Baloch.

The article reveals the emotional attachment Qazi has with the IJT and states that the IJT’s violent attitude has become a source of disgrace for it, as it gives the media fodder to defame JI’s student wing.

The article also states the complaints of several elements within the IJT about violence being perpetrated by the IJT on campus. Qazi urges the IJT not to be violent and not to force its strategy and ideology on campuses and advises it to apologise to Imran and to refrain from such acts in the future.

PU sources told Daily Times on Tuesday that the article had sparked widespread debate on and off campus over whether the IJT would follow Qazi’s advice or not.

Some circles believe that the article was a face saving attempt by Qazi, as it did not mention the action taken by the JI over the IJT’s violations and hooliganism. They assumed that it looked as if some elements within the IJT were not in the control of JI bigwigs.

Others believe that Qazi truly meant what he wrote. They believe that the JI chief wants the IJT end its hooliganism and let students decide whether to join or not to join the IJT.

Punjab University Academic Staff Association ({PUASA) president Prof Mumtaz Ahmad Salik, who is also affiliated to the JI, said he would not comment on Qazi’s article, as it was a personal point of view.

“I am not aware of the story behind the Imran Khan episode,” he said, adding, “However, we believe that students should stay in their limits and respect their elders.”

He said there should also be respect for democratic standards. He said such a message promoted tolerance, accommodation and democratic norms on campus with equal opportunity for all students. He said students must focus on their studies and curricular activities.

Prof Dr Iftikhar Hussain Baloch, who has been confronting JI/IJT policies and ideology on campus, said a significant number of PU students and teachers believed that this could be a face saving attempt by the JI.

He said, “It is believed that the IJT considers themselves the real force of the JI and if there is a problem, the JI should take action against its student wing. This, however, has not been seen.”

He said people knew that JI bigwigs had been approaching the PU administration to restore expelled IJT students. “If the JI really wants to improve its image, it should not take part in such activity,” he added.

PU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan said the advice from the senior politician and leader was positive and must be taken accordingly. “It gives the IJT a new policy to follow,” he said. “It is also clear that nobody on campus is above the law.”

PU IJT nazim Attiqur Rehman, who replaced Muhammad Ayub after the Imran episode, said Qazi wrote the article as advice to the IJT. He denied the presence of violent elements in the IJT, saying, “We live in the hearts of the students. There are bigger examples of violence by the state. The real issue here is lifting the ban on student unions to allow students to act freely and democratically. Till the ban is not lifted students will take part in violence.”

He alleged that certain elements were trying to break the unity between PU teachers and students and the IJT with the aim to allow the regime to enforce “anti-people policies like such as the Model University Ordinance”.

However, the IJT would not allow anyone to break the student-teacher alliance, he added.

Qazi, Hafiz Saeed decry govt policies
2007-11-17
Some religious leaders condemned the government in Friday sermons for launching a military operation in Swat and arresting lawyers, political and religious leaders. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad in Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid Mansoora said the government was pushing the nation to the brink of civil war by suspending basic human rights and imposing ban of freedom of expression. He said the government should allow peaceful protests if it wanted to avert civil war.

Qazi demanded that the government restore the deposed chief justice and lift the state of emergency. He said the government should ensure that free and fair elections were conducted. He condemned the detention of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) female workers. The way PTI female activists have been treated reminded the Israeli police’s treatment of Palestinian women, he said.

Jamattud Dawah chief Prof Hafiz Saeed in a Friday sermon at Masjid Al-Qadsia said, “Islamic Sharia is the only possible solution to the current political crisis faced by the country.” He said there could be no progress without ending the atmosphere of servitude. He also criticised the government for the treatment meted out to the judges, lawyers and politicians. He said judges were guardians of the Constitution, but they had been put under detention. “Freedom without giving sacrifices is not possible and many of us have now realised it,” he added.

JUI-F mulls goodbye to MMA
2007-10-24
A debate has started within the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) on whether to quit the “dysfunctional” Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) before the general elections or not, party sources said on Tuesday.

“Staying with the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in the alliance is politically risky, but campaigning without the MMA platform is not less than a gamble,” a senior JUI-F leader said on condition of anonymity. “Hawks in both parties are making strong arguments to part ways with each other.”

The JI and JUI-F, the two major components of the alliance, are having differences over the MMA decision to dissolve the NWFP assembly before the presidential poll.

“The people perceive the MMA as a symbol of unity among religious parties. If the MMA breaks then the public opinion will also change,” he said.

Another JUI-F insider said that JUI-F NWFP chief Senator Gul Naseeb was against staying together with the JI. Gul Naseeb told a JUI reception in honour of former NWFP chief minister Akram Durrani and his cabinet members on Tuesday that there was “not much difference between the JI and secular parties”.

Gul asked party leaders how the JUI-F could work together with the JI when his party had beaten the JI in Dir district in the 2002 polls. Another JUI-F leader said that the Monday meeting between JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and JI chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad was aimed at controlling the situation, which he said “has reached a tipping point”.

Qazi belittled MMA: He said the JUI-F accused Qazi of belittling the MMA by joining hands with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-dominated All Parties Democratic Movement.

An NWFP bureaucrat called the alliance “clinically dead”, adding that the leaderships of both parties were keeping the alliance alive under compulsions. He said Qazi and Fazl were aware of the hatred among their parties ranks against each other, but were waiting for the other to announce a separation from the alliance.

Separately, a source in the JI said both parties were also debating the distribution of elections seats despite differences between them. “The JI wants to contest on the seats it won in the 2002 polls, but the JUI-F is calling for a new approach to be adopted,” he said.

Analysts said the JI joined hands with the PML-N and the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf in the APDM to win maximum seats in Punjab.

Musharraf to consult BB and Fazl for interim setup
2007-10-21
President General Pervez Musharraf would consult Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan Muslim League (PML) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for the formation of a caretaker government, Geo news quoted its sources as saying.

The channel said President Musharraf didn’t want to include other political parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, in this process as it would be difficult to reach a consensus in the presence of too many parties.

It said the president wanted an impartial caretaker government and would consult Bhutto, Shujaat and Fazl about the names of the caretaker prime minister and cabinet members. The channel said the size of the caretaker cabinet would be smaller than the current cabinet.

Javed Hashmi, Hafiz Hussain, Mian Aslam sent to Adiala Jail
2007-09-23
Police launched a massive crackdown on All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) leaders and workers in Rawalpindi and Islamabad early on Sunday and arrested Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Acting President Javed Hashmi, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) leader Hafiz Hussain Ahmed and the MMA’s parliamentarian Mian Muhammad Aslam under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance. The raids were made to stop the movement from demonstrating outside the Supreme Court on Monday and Tuesday and then outside the Election Commission on September 29 when the nomination papers of the presidential candidates would be scrutinised.

A list given to the police by the government also includes the names of anti-government religious leaders. “The list also includes the names of those who are dead or are outside Pakistan,” a police officer said, adding that orders were also issued for the arrest of PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal and Ch Nisar Ali Khan.

Hashmi and Hafiz Hussain Ahmed were arrested from parliament lodges, while Mian Aslam was arrested from his residence in F-8 and sent to Adiala Jail for 30 days under Section 3 of the MPO.
