Military General who Ruled Egypt after Mubarak Ouster Dies
2021-09-22
[AnNahar] Hussein Tantawi, the Egyptian general who ruled the country following the Arab Spring uprising that removed longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
, died on Tuesday, Egypt's presidency said. He was 85.

Field Marshal Tantawi was Mubarak's loyal defense minister for some 20 years. But it was Tantawi who led the country after the then-chief spy Omar Suliman announced on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
on Feb. 11, 2011, that Mubarak was stepping down after the 18 days of protest against his government.

Tantawi went on to chair the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which took power. Under his leadership, the military strengthened its tight grip on the country, outlawing dissent, and largely returned to using the same tactics that were in place under Mubarak and that protesters had decried.

Born in October 1935, Tantawi, who suffered from age-related health problems in recent months, died in a hospital in Cairo, according to a person close to his family, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

His death came 19 months after Mubarak died in a Cairo military hospital in February last year.

Tantawi, appointed defense minister in 1991, ran Egypt for 17 months until the election in June 2012 of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected leader.

Morsi removed Tantawi and the country's chief of staff, Sami Enan, in August that year, following a deadly bad boy attack in the Sinai Peninsula.

Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, now president, was the head of the military intelligence at the time. Morsi named el-Sissi defense minister, replacing Tantawi, his longtime mentor. al-Sissi would eventually oversee Morsi's removal from power in 2013, amid more street protests against the Islamist's brief rule.

Under Tantawi and el-Sissi, rights groups have accused the country's security apparatus of repeated violations, including the targeting of protesters and the arrest and detention of political opposition members and dissenting citizens.

Hamas, Egypt clash publicly
2008-04-21
A verbal confrontation broke out Sunday between Hamas and an Egyptian government officials, after Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said his country would prefer a Palestinian government without Hamas in it, since the organization will hinder the Palestinian Authority's peace efforts. Hamas was reportedly infuriated by the remark, as Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said Gheit's comments were unacceptable and counterproductive to the efforts made to restore Palestinian unity.

The public altercation took place while Hamas officials Mahmoud al-Zahar and Said Siam were holding various meetings in Cairo, regarding – among other matters – the negotiations to free IDF captive Gilad Shalit, lull effort with Israel and the internal Palestinian conflict. Gheit said Saturday that the lull talks were ongoing, adding they included a gradual ceasefire, to the point that all violence – including rocket fire on Hamas' part and targeted assassinations on Israel's part – would come to a halt.

Hamas spokesman Zuhri rejected Egypt's idea to hold a referendum regarding a peace treaty with Israel: "We are against this idea. You cannot hold any referendum regarding the Palestinian people's basic rights. (We) cannot hold a referendum about the future of al-Quds (Jerusalem) if its results might affect our rights in the city." Hamas further said they will not stand for anyone interfering in the organization's decisions, explaining Hamas already has the majority of the seats in the Palestinian parliament.

A senior Hamas official told Ynet that the group assumed the comments were an attempt by Gheit to test Hamas' position in the matter, adding that he is known for being "the bad guy" in the Egyptian government's dealings with Hamas. "The majority of our dealings are with Egyptian Intelligence Minister Omar Suliman and we hope he is being kept up to date," added the source. Gheit's attitude was found to be puzzling, said the source, especially since the subject of forming a new Palestinian government has yet to come up.

Egyptian Official Holds Talks in Israel, Palestinian Territories
2002-07-08
Egypt's intelligence chief has met separately with Israeli and Palestinians leaders in an effort revive Mideast peace talks. Omar Suliman held a series of meetings in Jerusalem Sunday with top Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Mr. Peres said he told the Egyptian official that the Palestinian Authority had to combat terrorism and clamp down on militant groups, such as Hamas, which has carried out a wave of suicide bombings. Mr. Suliman said Egypt wants to help calm the 22-month-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but he said Israel must first take measures to give Palestinians some hope. The Egyptian official later went to Ramallah to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Those talks were expected to focus on reforms within the Palestinian Authority.
'Tisn't so much Israel as the U.S. who's holding out hope for the Paleostinians. Reforming their government, introducing some sort of coherent constitutional system, and dumping the thugs is their only "hope" of becoming a self-sufficient, prosperous people. But my guess is that when most of them think of "hope" they think in terms of ammunition supplies and high explosives...
