5 Injured in Attack against Minister Karami's Convoy
2013-01-19
[An Nahar] A car part of Sports and Youth Minister Faisal Karami's convoy was engulfed in flames on Friday following a grenade attack in Azmi street in the northern port city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
as families of Islamist detainees held a sit-in to protest the ongoing detention of the men, as his father former Premier Omar Karami slammed the "lack of security" in Leb.

"I was heading to Friday prayers when the incident took place," Karami told LBCI channel.

He said that gunnies were on the streets and suddenly gunfire erupted.

"We didn't know what happened," he added.

"I don't think I was the target of the attack," Karami told OTV channel earlier.

He stated that the convoy was passing in the area when several cars came under gunfire.

"I think the unrest aims at targeting the country's security situation," the minister pointed out.

Karami told LBCI that "five of the bodyguards were maimed."

The identified bodyguards are Ali Baradei, Jamal Khaled al-Hassan, Mohammed Sayyour, and Ali Ahmed Mahmoud.

Sheikh Nabil Rahim, who called for Friday's sit-in, told LBCI that Sheikh Houssam al-Sabbagh was the target behind the incident.

Voice of Leb radio (93.3) reported that the incident took place after Karami's bodyguards exchanged fire with several protesters participating in a sit-in held by the families of the Islamist detainees at Roumieh prison.

Al-Jadeed channel reported that it was an Energa-type rocket and not a grenade attack.

After Friday's incident, the army deployed near Karami's house in al-Maarad area and began checking the identification papers of passers-by.

The army later issued a communique saying that its units cordoned off the area of the incident as stationary and mobile checkpoints were deployed.

"The army is in pursuit of the culprits to arrest them and refer them to the competent judiciary," the statement said.

Former PM Omar Karami later held a presser in Tripoli to denounce the incident, saying: "God saved Faisal from great evil."

"We will consider today's incident as a mistake committed by the gunnies in the area," he said.

"We have always voiced our commitment to the state and we will not make accusations against anyone," he added.

"The security forces are not performing their duties in a manner that reassures the people," he noted.

"We will leave it up to the state to tackle this issue," he continued.

"We have presented blood for Leb, Arabism, and the Arab world. We are always prepared to present such sacrifices," declared the former prime minister.

"We will continue along our chosen path regardless of the hardships," said Karami.

Moreover, he hoped that the parliamentary elections will be held on time "to produce a new parliament that would help prioritize the importance of the state."

Karami Says Assad Told Him he is 'No Longer Worried'
2011-10-03
[An Nahar] Former Premier Omar Karami stressed on Sunday that Syrian President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
comforted him earlier in the week that he had "turned the page of the events" in his country.

Karami, who visited Assad along with his son Minister Faisal Karami on Wednesday, told An Nahar daily that the "the story is over."

Assad comforted him that he had "turned the page of the events" that shook the neighboring country, saying things were "under control."

"We are no longer worried," Karami quoted the Syrian president was telling him.

The former premier told An Nahar that the information about the crackdown in Syria and the uprising against the regime is totally different than what is taking place there.

The Syrian security forces have controlled the situation, he said.

Karami also quoted Assad as saying that Syria still has good relations with several influential countries in the world.

The United Nations

says 2,700 people have been killed in the protests against Assad. The U.N. Security Council, meanwhile, remains divided over whether to threaten the regime with sanctions over its deadly crackdown on dissent.

A message to Hariri
2011-01-28
[Asharq al-Aswat] Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri considers what happened to his [political] bloc as being virtually a "political coup d'etat" and he [also] expressed his "deep sense of betrayal." He said that his father's killers were the ones who were responsible for him being removed [from power], and he has every right to say this, however Hariri must remember that democracy itself is crooked.

Our democracy, as I previously described it, is an "Iranian democracy" where the winner loses, and the loser is the one who forms the government, along the lines of what happened in the recent Iranian presidential elections. As Leb today is being run by the "Supreme Guide" Hassan Nasrallah, we see the same method being adopted in this country.

For example, Nasrallah blamed the majority government because it did not do anything for the people; however he did not acknowledge that his men and Nabih Knobby Berri
... the Hizbullah sock puppet ...
's men surrounded Fouad Siniora's residence for 538 days, and then later withdrew from the government, forcing its collapse. This is not to mention the innovation of their "blocking third" veto power. In light of all of this, how could any government serve the people? Hezbullies was not satisfied with their endless tricks, and indeed Omar Karami has responded to Nasrallah's speech in which he claimed that he had refused to accept the position of prime minister due to his advanced age, saying "I listened to Sayyad Hassan [Nasrallah] during his address, in which he lamented me. Today I am standing before you, and I ask you to bear witness as media representatives, do I look ill to you?"

A further trick in Hezbullies's repertoire was to undermine Leb's 'Day of Rage', which had been called for by Hariri. Hezbullies sought to interfere and sabotage, and everyone knows that Hezbullies has infiltrated some Sunni areas [of Beirut] -- which is something that I wrote about a few months ago -- in order to generate inter-Sunni sedition. Have we forgotten, for example, the story of Sunni Death Eater Omar Bakri, who was released from prison [in Leb] after terrorist charges against him were dropped after he said that he acknowledged that Shiite Hezbullies was "Ahl al-Qibla" [i.e. Mohammedans, who pray in the direction of Mecca] and not "Rafidah" [Shiite Mohammedans who reject the caliphate of Muhammad's two successors, Abu Bakr and Umar]? Interestingly, the lawyer representing him in this case was Hezbullies MP Nawar al-Sahili.

Therefore, the message to Hariri today is that whilst you may have lost the battle, you have not lost the war. Your war is to protect the state, and the most important means of guaranteeing this is the Special Tribunal for Leb completing its mandate and uncovering the killers of Rafik Hariri and his associates, regardless of the price. This will prevent bloodshed, ensure that Leb is protected, and ensure the continuation of Rafik Hariri's message, for [Rafik Hariri] did not monopolize the Sunnis, but rather returned them to a state of strength, without firing a single bullet.

The government today is facing major challenges, and with all due respect to Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who is aware of the extent of my personal appreciation for him, the Lebanese [leadership] succession is not only an internal matter, but a regional one as well. We do not know if Mikati has cleared the air with the Gulf States, particularly as certain countries did not agree with the manner in which he came to power. Most importantly, Soddy Arabia's acceptance of this appointment has yet to be confirmed, and we are aware that Soddy Arabia had announced that it was washing its hands of this issue. This is an extremely important issue, and Riyadh is currently warning its citizens from traveling to Leb. Of course, there is still the international community, especially Washington, which Prime Minister Mikati says is very important to him. However we do not know how this stance can be reconciled with the 'defenders of the resistance', especially considering that Nasrallah regards the Lebanese Sunnis as being disloyal merely because they have a relationship with the West!

So, former Prime Minister Hariri, your task is to protect the state, and the way to achieve this is via the completion of the international tribunal, which is what led to your being removed [from power] in the first place. So don't stop...continue!

Opposition: Miqati was Handed a Five-Point Plan to Be Implemented
2011-01-25
[An Nahar] Informed opposition sources praised on Monday Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's choice to nominate former Prime Minister Najib Miqati to head a new government, saying that only House Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
... the Hizbullah sock puppet ...
was informed of this plan.

They told the Central News Agency that Berri agreed to it a few hours before the consultations when the opposition's original choice to nominate former PM Omar Karami was reconsidered.

They explained that by nominating Miqati, at least three of his MPs' votes will be transferred to the opposition, which would not have been possible had Karami been nominated, therefore granting the opposition 63 votes against Caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri's 65.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
an informed opposition political source told the news agency that the decision to nominate Miqati was a result of Arab, regional, and international pressure on the opposition and Syria against naming Karami.

"The Syrian leadership informed the opposition of this decision Saturday night through Nasrallah and Berri's envoys who visited Damascus in a quick visit," it added.

The source predicted that Miqati may win 68 votes during the parliamentary consultations and he has started preparing the formation of a new government.

It revealed that it would be a technocratic Cabinet of 14 ministers, with the defense and interior ministries going to the president.

"This does not mean that there will be no preliminary consultations to form a 30-minister national unity cabinet," it added.

Furthermore, it stressed that the opposition had requested Miqati to implement a five-point plan, the first of which demands withdrawing the cooperation protocol between Leb and the Special Tribunal for Leb as it was formed through unconstitutional means.

The other points include withdrawing the Lebanese judges from the STL seeing as they are false witnesses, halting the funding of the tribunal, referring the false witnesses file to the Lebanese judiciary, and bolstering Lebanese-Syrian ties, said the source.

Aoun: Opposition Candidates are Karami, Safadi, Miqati
2011-01-24
[An Nahar] Free Patriotic Movement

leader Michel Aoun
...a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
on Sunday said the Opposition candidates for the premiership are Omar Karami, Mohammed Safadi and Najib Miqati.

He said the Opposition will "give the final word today or tomorrow."
Aoun accused caretaker PM Saad Hariri of giving false testimonies.

"Saad Hariri, and not Mohammed Zuhair Siddiq, is the first person to be involved in false testimony," Aoun said in an interview with BBC.

He said he believed Hariri will not return as Leb's PM "since the majority now is in our hands."

Leadership is sacrifice
2011-01-24
By Tariq Alhomayed
I have often heard men say that the King of the Arabians, Sheikh of the Burning Sands, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques , King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, had a lot of respect and appreciation for the late Kamal Jumblatt. The King believes that Jumblatt held a stance which ultimately cost him his life, but he never compromised his position.

I recalled this after a recent presser, in which Walid Wally Jumblat
... who's been on every side in Leb at least four times...
t, the son of the late Lebanese leader, declared that he had changed his allegiances [regarding the nomination of the next Prime Minster], and joined forces with Syria and Hezbullies. This move was considered a complete reversal of his previous position, and thus there is a clear difference between the son and his father! Walid says that he wants to maintain civil peace in Leb, and this desire is both sincere and noble. It is a desire which I have repeatedly heard from Jumblatt himself, whether over the telephone or in person during my last interview with him in Beirut. However,
The infamous However...
this is also one of the most important reasons to hold everyone to the International Tribunal, in order to put an end to liquidations and political crimes, and furthermore to put an end to the manipulation of Leb, and the constant threats to its unity, sects, and above all, its existence.

Regarding Jumblatt's recent statements, some believe that he has not completely closed the door on the March 14
Those are the good guys, insofar as Leb has good guys...
th Alliance, which he insinuated by saying he had joined Syria and Hezbullies. It could be that his deputies hold a different stance regarding nominations for the next Prime Minister. The irony is that Hezbullies and its allies, and those behind them of course, want to nominate Omar Karami as Prime Minster...the man who held that very post when Rafik Hariri was assassinated, yet today he is being put forth as a candidate to lead a government intending to abolish the Hariri Tribunal! I was thoroughly convinced by what Eli Maroni, a member of al-Kata'ib bloc, said the day before yesterday in our newspaper, stating "MP Jumblatt's move to stand with Syria and Hezbullies was imposed upon him by threats and intimidation. This happened as a result of the strong presence of armed Hezbullies forces of Evil between my town Qmatiye and Aley (all predominantly Druze areas). This has left the Lebanese in a state of constant anxiety, stemming from the fear of weapons". I sensed this much from sporadic conversations with Walid Jumblatt, and I have also heard such comments from those close to Jumblatt himself, and others who are in communication with him.

Thus someone might say Walid Jumblatt is changing his stance based on a rational motive; to protect his followers, the Druze. This is true, for it is the duty of a leader, any leader, to take into account the interests of those who follow him. However,
The infamous However...
only taking the interests of supporters into account is an act of self-preservation, whereas it is also the duty of the leader to achieve a larger objective, namely the preservation of the Lebanese state. He must protect all components of Leb, including the Druze, but not at the expense of others. If Leb does indeed end up with a government led by Iran and Syria, as hinted by Samir Geagea,
... Geagea was imprisoned by the Syrians and their puppets for 11 years in a dungeon in the third basement level of the Lebanese Ministry of Defense. He was released after the Cedar Revolution in 2005 ...
this will mean an end to the Lebanese state, and even an end to the Druze community. They will either be transformed into followers of the Wali al-Faqih, or handed over to the intelligence services.

To give Leb to Iran, with the blessing of the Lebanese leaders, is both cowardly and weak. [Lebanese leaders] ought to be reminded of the piece of history that I am recalling today, that Kamal Jumblatt was a brave man and uncompromising in his positions. Therefore we say to Mr. Walid Jumblatt: leadership is sacrifice.

Geagea: Hizbullah rule will turn Lebanon into Gaza
2011-01-23
[Jerusalem Post Front Page] Lebanese Christian leader pledges support for Hariri; says gov't led by Shi'ite group would lead Leb to be isolated and ostracized by the int'l community and Arab world like Gazoo Strip after Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, takeover.

Lebanese Christian leader Samir Geagea
... Geagea was imprisoned by the Syrians and their puppets for 11 years in a dungeon in the third basement level of the Lebanese Ministry of Defense. He was released after the Cedar Revolution in 2005 ...
on Saturday warned that if the country's new cabinet is led by Hizbullah candidate Omar Karami the situation "will be similar to Gazoo."

Geagea said Leb, like the Gazoo Strip after it was taken over by Hamas in 2007, would be isolated and ostracized by the international community and Arab world, with the exception of Syria.

Geagea stated that the Lebanese economy would suffer greatly from a Hizbullah-led government.

"Is anyone wondering what the situation of the Lebanese lira will be if the other team comes to power?" Geagea said during a presser.

Geagea said that not only Hizbullah, but also Syria was behind the push to make Karami premier.

The Christian leader accused Hizbullah and its allies of rejecting Saad Hariri as prime minister, not because he is Sunni or allegedly corrupt, but rather because he is independent and rejected pressure to denounce the UN tribunal into the liquidation of Rafik Hariri.

Geagea expressed his support of Hariri's push for the premiership of Leb, saying "we will do everything possible to bring back Hariri as prime minister."

On Friday, Druse leader Walid Wally Jumblat
... who's been on every side in Leb at least four times...
t, a potential kingmaker in Leb, threw his support behind Hizbullah, a major boost to the Shi'ite group that brought down the country's Western-backed government last week.

Jumblat to Support Karami for Premiership: Naming Hariri Will Lead to Catastrophic Results
2011-01-21
[An Nahar] Naharnet has learned that Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Wally Jumblat
... who's been on every side in Leb at least four times...
has informed concerned officials in the Mustqbal movement that he is being subject to great pressures against naming Caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri as the premier of a new government, knowing that he had previously informed Hariri that he would be naming him.
Jumblat did not elaborate on the reasons for his new position.

However,
The infamous However...
he did inform his circles that the policy of insisting on Hariri as the new prime minister will lead to "catastrophic consequences" on the security field, on him personally, PSP members, and the Druze in the Shouf, Alley, Hasbaya, and the western Bekaa.

Jumblat added that matters "have become greater than him and his ability to maintain the middle ground in a harsh battle in which Hariri's regional and international backers only resort to statements, while his opponents turn to all manners of military and popular pressure."

The MP revealed that he has now been forced to name former PM Omar Karami as the new prime minister and that he will place the PSP MPs before their responsibilities, adding that he has not given them a choice to name a prime minister and everyone should be held accountable for their actions should they not take his advice.

Jumblat to Name Hariri as PM
2011-01-14
[An Nahar] Sources from the parliamentary majority predicted on Thursday that Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Wally Jumblat
... who's been on every side in Leb at least four times...
is likely to select caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri as a new premier as the MP will not take a step that would harm his ties with him.

The sources told the Central News Agency that House Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
... the Hizbullah sock puppet ...
is also expected to take the same position as Jumblat "which would almost definitely ensure Hariri's return to his position."

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
opposition circles revealed on Thursday that its leadership had met Wednesday night away from the spotlight.

They told the news agency that the leaders had suggested a number of names to take over as premier, including former PM Omar Karami, former minister Abdel Rahim Murad, and former MP Oussam Saad.

Political sources from the majority noted that the March 8 forces
... the opposition to the Mar. 14th movement, consisting of Hizbullah and its allies, so-called in commemoration of their Mar. 8th, 2006 demonstration of strength in Beirut ...
seek to sever any official Lebanese link to the Special Tribunal for Leb.

The March 8 camp will be holding an expanded meeting in the upcoming days to reach an agreement on its final choice for prime minister, they added.

The opposition is aiming to find a way to take control of power through pressuring Jumblat to shift his support from the majority to the opposition, they continued.

Once this is achieved, then a government affiliated with one political camp would be formed, which would then take the legal measures to transfer the case of the liquidation of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri to the Lebanese judiciary, the sources stressed.

Two Suspects Held in Grenade Attack on Faisal Karami's House
2011-01-05
[An Nahar] Internal Security Forces on Tuesday jugged two people suspected of throwing a hand grenade at the entrance of Faisal Omar Karami's house in Tripoli on Sunday, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA identified the two suspects by their initials M. Q. and N. F.

It added that Sherlocks were interrogating them at the Tripoli cop shoppe in order to uncover the incident's circumstances.

NNA also quoted Faisal Karami as saying that "the authorities concerned referred the case to the military judiciary given that the crime harms national security, because it targeted the security and stability of Tripoli, the North and Leb."

Two of Karami's bodyguards were maimed at dawn Sunday when unknown assailants tossed the grenade at his house.

A security source told Voice of Leb radio station that occupants of a speeding vehicle tossed the grenade at 1:00 am at Karami's vehicle, which was parked near his home.

While refusing to accuse any side, Karami said the attack was a "political message."
"We will keep our political and historic stances," he vowed.

The incident is "very dangerous" although it did not cause any damage, Faisal's father, ex-PM Omar Karami, said later Sunday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
Leb's Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani condemned the attack, warning that "the recurrent daily attacks in Leb indicate that the hands of evil are still seeking to cause harm to Leb and its people."

18 killed, 40 wounded in Tripoli bus bombing
2008-08-13
A bomb exploded adjacent to a bus carrying civilians and members of the military during Wednesday morning rush hour in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, killing at least 18 people and wounding at least 40, security officials said. The dead included 10 off-duty soldiers.

The bomb was planted on the side of a main street and went off as the bus passed by. The streets were filled with people heading to work, which contributed to the many casualties, the officials said. The military had no immediate comment. The security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The blast raised suspicions that al-Qaida-inspired Islamic militants may have sought revenge on the military for clashes last year at a nearby Palestinian refugee camp. But some local media speculated it may be aimed at undermining a visit later Wednesday by the Lebanese president to Syria to patch up stormy relations between the neighbors.

Information Minister Tarek Mitri described the incident as a big terrorist explosion but would not speculate on who was behind it. "The hands of the criminals have hit in Tripoli against innocent soldiers and civilians," he told reporters in Beirut. "Once again, they want our country to be an arena for settling scores and battling for influence."

Shattered glass could be seen in the Banks Street in Tripoli's center. Witnesses said fire engines and ambulances had rushed to the scene, while soldiers and policemen cordoned off the area to keep onlookers away and to investigate. The small public bus, which had been bringing passengers from the remote northernmost Akkar region, home to many military members, was riddled with shrapnel from the blast. Soldiers used sniffer dogs to search nearby parked car, as forensic experts in white uniforms, face masks and gloves sifted through the wreckage of the bus picking up evidence.

Tripoli, 90 kilometers (53 miles) north of Beirut, is Lebanon's second-largest city with a mostly Sunni Muslim population, dominated by groups loyal to the Western-backed parliament majority. It has witnessed sectarian clashes between Sunni fighters and followers of the Alawite sect, an offshoot Shiite sect, in the past weeks that killed and wounded dozens of people. The city is also close to the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared, which experienced deadly clashes in 2007 between Lebanese troops and members of the al-Qaida-inspired Fatah Islam group that left hundreds dead before the militants were defeated. During that fighting, the militants also were flushed out of the city.

Fatah Islam group has claimed responsibility for a bomb blast that killed a soldier in Abdeh near Tripoli on May 31.

Former Prime Minister Omar Karami - a prominent politician from Tripoli - said it is too early to speculate on the motive behind the explosion, but added that the high casualties among soldiers could mean the military was targeted and could be related to the 2007 Nahr el-Bared violence.

The latest violence comes at an especially sensitive time for Lebanon. On Tuesday, after a five-day debate and weeks of negotiations that preceded it, the parliament approved a national unity government that gives the Iranian-backed Hezbollah opposition a more powerful say in the running of the country, including veto power over major decisions.

The explosion also comes as President Michel Suleiman is expected on a landmark visit in neighboring Syria - the first visit by a Lebanese president in about three years. Ties have deteriorated since Syrian troops withdrew from Lebanon under international pressure in the wake of the Hariri assassination. Hariri's supporters blame Syria for the killing, while Damascus denies involvement.

Hizbullah warns of resignations, protests if demands for unity government not met
2006-10-31
EFL

BEIRUT: Hizbullah will seek the formation of a new government through all democratic means, including the resignation of its two ministers and street protests, the group's senior MP said on Monday. Hizbullah and its allies have been demanding a new "national unity" government since the month-long war with Israel ended on August 14.

The group has been a fierce critic of Western-backed Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, whom it sees, along with the parliamentary majority, as keen to disarm its military wing.

"We are careful to practice all democratic and legitimate means to express our stand and our rejection of the continuation of this situation and to work toward forming a government of national unity," said Mohammad Raad, the head of Hizbullah's parliamentary bloc.

"We will take all available democratic steps to achieve this goal, including resigning from the government," he added.

Raad was speaking after holding separate talks with key opposition figures, former Prime Minister Omar Karami and Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun.

Speaker Nabih Berri on Sunday delayed talks with Leb-anon's political elite aimed at defusing tensions after several anti-Syrian leaders said they could not attend because they would be out of the country this week.

In his attempts to reduce tensions, Berri is expected to meet later this week with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, who said in his Sunday sermon that "certain parties" are trying to return the country to the age of Syrian tutelage.

Sfeir is also scheduled to meet Aoun this week in their first meeting since relations between the two leaders deteriorated a few months ago over their stance regarding calls for a national unity government.

Berri told As-Safir newspaper on Monday that all leaders confirmed they will attend the talks next Monday, except for Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who the speaker said "is a target for the Americans and the Israelis, and even if he decides to attend I will forbid him for his own safety and for that of Lebanon."

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt is in Washington for meetings with US officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Jumblatt said in a statement in the PSP weekly magazine to be published today that discussing a national unity government is only possible after electing a new president.

"Political logic requires first solving the presidency issue ... afterwards we can discuss forming a national unity government ... then a new electoral law," the Druze leader said.

Former President and Phalanges Party leader Amin Gemayel is in Kurdistan, while Hariri is in Saudi Arabia.

Gemayel said Monday from Kurdistan that the current conflict in Lebanon is between "a party working for Lebanon ... and another one which insists on linking [Lebanon] to regional strategic interests that are closer to adventures, taking place on its land and destroying its infrastructure and killing and displacing its people."

Hmmm... What's Gemayel doing in Kurdistan?

A German naval squadron off the coast, French, Finnish, and other European forces in-country, and now Nasrallah is setting deadlines for a "unity" government?
