Widow of Orlando Nightclub Shooter Acquitted on All Charges |
2018-03-31 |
[NPR] Noor Salman, widow of the gunman who opened fire on an Orlando nightclub in 2016, has been found not guilty on both the counts she faced. U.S. District Judge Paul Byron announced the verdict Friday, roughly one month after the trial opened. Salman was the only person charged in connection with the massacre that left 50 people ‐ including her husband, Omar Mateen ‐ dead at Pulse nightclub. She stood accused of helping Mateen prepare for and plan the 2016 massacre at the nightclub and of obstructing investigators' efforts after the killing. Her defense team argued that far from being an eager collaborator, Salman was instead a "simple woman" with a low IQ, susceptible to influence and abused by Mateen. While prosecutors asserted that Noor had given misleading statements to state and federal investigators, the defense maintained that she had been manipulated and mistreated during these interrogations. Later in the trial, Salman's attorneys also called for Byron to declare a mistrial or dismiss the case outright, saying the prosecution had withheld crucial information for the development of their argument. It was not until after the prosecution had rested its case, nearly two weeks after the trial opened, that prosecutors disclosed the information in an email last Saturday. Emphasis added. She confessed to assisting her husband, was found to be lying to Law Enforcement, but is said to be 'simple minded and have a low IQ.' She was obviously following Islamic law as it applies to husbands and wives, therefore you must acquit. |

Noor Salman’s
Salman has been charged with providing material support to a terror organization and obstruction of justice, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Salman’s husband, Mateen, killed 49 people and wounded almost 70 others when he opened fire at Pulse nightclub on June 12, 2016 in one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. The gay bar on the night of the shooting was packed with more than 300 people. Mateen called 911 when he was pulling off the attack to pledge his allegiance to ISIS, and was shouting “Allahu akbar” while engaging officers, law enforcement sources told Fox News around the time of the attack. Salman knew about her husband's plan before the shooting and how he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terror group, prosecutors said. She shopped with her husband the night before the attack when he bought five containers of ammunition, a source close to the investigation told Fox News. The judge’s order quoted a U.S. Supreme Court ruling which said, “prominence of media coverage does not necessarily produce prejudicing and juror impartiality does not require ignorance,” WESH reported. Salman’s trial is scheduled for March 1.

Orlando Shooter's Widow to be Released on Bail
2017-03-03 | |
[AnNahar] A U.S. federal judge in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, on Wednesday agreed to release on bail the widow of the gunman who killed dozens of people at an Orlando nightclub last year. U.S. magistrate Donna Ryu set bail at $500,000 for Noor Salman pending her trial on two charges related to the assault by her husband Omar Mateen ... the Afghan-"American" who decided he was a soldier of the Caliphate and shot fifty unarmed people to death in a Florida gay bar he used to frequent... on the Pulse gay nightclub in Florida that killed 49 people. Prosecutors had argued that Salman, who was tossed in the clink ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... in January in connection with the massacre, should be kept behind bars because she posed a threat to society. They have until Friday to appeal the judge's decision.

She also said there was no evidence Salman posed a risk of flight or a danger to the community. "I agree with the pretrial service recommendation and find that Ms Salman has rebutted the presumptions of both risk of flight and danger to the community and that she can and should be released pursuant to strict conditions that will reasonably mitigate those risks," Ryu said. She ordered the 30-year-old, who had a four-year-old son with Mateen, to wear an electronic monitor while living with her maternal uncle in northern California, where she grew up. The ruling essentially puts Salman under house arrest, allowed to leave only for court appearances, to meet her attorneys or for medical appointments for her and her son, Ryu said. Salman, whose case is being prosecuted in Florida, faces up to life in prison if convicted of the charge of assisting her husband in his bid to help a terrorist organization. She also faces up to 20 years in prison on the second charge of lying to Sherlocks. Police killed Mateen in a shootout. During the attack, he had called dispatchers to pledge allegiance to the Islamic State group.

The two-count indictment states that Noor Salman, who was incarcerated Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! She is also charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly misleading local police in Florida and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on information relating to the attack. Forty-nine people died in Mateen’s assault on the Pulse gay nightclub on June 12, the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. Salman, who had a four-year-old son with Mateen, made an initial appearance in federal court in Oakland, California, on Tuesday and had the charges read out to her. She faces up to life in person if found guilty. Given that it was unclear if she had an attorney, another hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, a front man for the US Attorney’s office told AFP. He said Salman was provisionally represented by a federal public defender on Tuesday. It was unclear what she was doing in California and her case is expected to be transferred to Florida. Media reports have said that Salman may have had prior knowledge of her husband’s plan to carry out the massacre as she had accompanied him on at least one trip to the nightclub and on one occasion went with him to buy ammunition. The indictment, which was returned in Florida on January 12, asks that Salman’s assets, including $30,500, be forfeited. She was taken into custody early Monday in Rodeo, a community about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of the Socialist paradise of San Francisco ...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964... . Rahami's wife skedaddled two days before bombings
2016-09-20 | |
The wife of bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami left the US a few days before the NY, NJ bombings, an official says. US officials want to speak with her, a law enforcement official said on condition of anonymity. The official didn't provide details about her travels but said authorities are working with officials in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates to gain access to her. Her timeline in the United States wasn't immediately clear. Rahami had tried earlier this decade to petition to bring his wife to the United States from Pakistan, though it wasn't clear when he succeeded. A law enforcement official told CNN that Rahami filed the paperwork in 2011, and it was approved in 2012. Then, in 2014, Rahami contacted the office of US Rep. Albio Sires, D-New Jersey, from Islamabad, Pakistan, saying he was concerned about his wife's passport and visa. It turned out her Pakistani passport had expired and the consulate wouldn't give her an immigrant visa until the passport was renewed, Sires said. Once the passport was renewed, she found out she was pregnant, and officials told her they wouldn't give a visa until she had the baby, Sires said. They also told her an immigrant visa would be needed for the baby after the birth. At that point, Rahami claims the consulate told him to go back to Karachi, Pakistan, but he claimed it was too dangerous to go there. The congressman doesn't know what happened after that.
