Serraj government confirm handover of Tripoli port security from Nawasi militia | |
2018-10-07 | |
[LibyaHerald] Libya’s Ministry of Interior, aligned to the internationally recognised Libyan Presidency Council and Government of National Accord led by Faiez Serraj, announced yesterday that it had taken over the security of Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... port. The announcement follows on from the announcement last Tuesday (2 October) by Mustafa Gadur, commander of one of Tripoli’s main militias, the 8th Force, more commonly referred to as the Nawasi brigade, to hand in his written resignation as commander of the force guarding Tripoli port.

Fighting in Tripoli leaves 3 dead |
2017-10-03 |
[Libya Herald] Three people, including a civilian, were killed in fighting last night in Tripoli’s Gurji district, west of the city centre, between the powerful Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade of Haithem Tajouri and the Nawasi Brigade. The clashes occurred late last night after Tajouri sent in forces to Gurji’s Massara area to clear it of a Nawasi unit consiting of an extended local family, the Alwad Radiah, said to be in control of it. Tajouri’s forces are reported to have succeeded. As well as the civilian killed in the fighting, one on the leaders of the Alwad Radiah was also reported killed. The third person was unidentified. The fighting was triggered by a move earlier in the evening by Nawasi to take over Tajouri’s headquarters on the corniche (Shara Al-Shatt), just opposite the TV station next to the foreign ministry buildings. There was no serious fighting, just shooting in the air, but Tajouri called in reinforcements and the corniche east of the Mahari Radisson Blu hotel was closed off. His forces were then dispatched to Gurji. The pro-Islamist Nawasi brigade was at one point linked to Abdul Raouf Kara and his Rada brigades but the link was broken when, with the arrival of the Presidency Council in Tripoli last year, he supported it while the more radical Nawasi continued to support the crumbling Libya Dawn “government” of Khalifa Ghwell. It still does so, although like him, it is said to have now transferred its support to Baset Igtet. It is claimed that it tried to move against Tajouri yesterday following the rumours that he was going to have discussions with Khalifa Hafter. |

Clashes between rival militias cause panic in Tripoli |
2017-05-11 |
![]() ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... when two rival local militias battled it out for control of the area. The two ‐ the Nawasi brigade, which controls much the corniche from the Libyana headquarters near Busetta to Suq al-Thalath on the west side of the city and which is trying to expand its zone, and the Ghazewy brigade, based in the Old City, have been rivals for some time. One area of contention has been their relationships with black market currency dealers. Some are protected by Nawasi, others by Ghazewy. The situation spiralled out of control today when a woman queueing at a bank off Martyrs’ Square was reported rubbed out by one of the militias. It has not been disclosed which militia or which bank, although there are reports of attempts to arrest a member of the Ghazewy. There were festivities near Busetta and near the Corinthia Hotel, and both militias called on their supporters to be ready for a major confrontation. Somehow, however, the situation calmed down during the afternoon, without any obvious reason. Meanwhile, ...back at the barn, Bossy had come up with a new idea, one that didn't involve kerosene... both Dreibi district and the Airport Road saw tanks and other heavy weapons appear on the streets but residents say they heard no shooting. |
