Trial date finalized for Charlie Hebdo, Hyper Cacher attacks
2019-10-24
[IsraelTimes] 14 people to go on trial May 4 to July 10 for aiding forces of Evil in January 2015 attacks on satirical magazine, kosher supermarket in Gay Paree.

Fourteen people will go on trial in Gay Paree next May over the January 2015 attacks on the Charlie Hebdo

newspaper and a kosher supermarket that heralded a wave of jihadist strikes on La Belle France, judicial sources said Wednesday.

The trial will take place from May 4 to July 10, lawyers and a judicial source told AFP.

Seventeen people were killed over three days in and around Gay Paree in January 2015 in the attacks.

Cherif Kouachi and his brother Said killed 12 people on January 7 at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Gay Paree, including some of La Belle France’s best known cartoonists.

Over the following two days, a third gunman, Amedy Coulibaly, rubbed out a young policewoman and killed four people at a kosher supermarket.

All three button men, who had claimed allegiance to jihadist groups, were killed by police.

The 14 accused are suspected of having provided logistical aid to the attackers.

The case will be heard by a special court seated, for logistical reasons, in a new, bigger building in the extreme northwest of Gay Paree and not the Palace of Justice in the center that would ordinarily have hosted it, the sources said.

Eleven of the suspects are in detention, but three are set to be tried in their absence.

They include Hayat Boumedienne, the partner of Coulibaly, who Ottoman Turkish authorities said at the time had crossed into Syria as her partner shot the policewoman.

Also on the run are brothers Mohammed and Mehdi Belhoucine, who also left for the Iraq-Syria region just before the attacks.

Unconfirmed reports have said all three could now be dead after fierce bombing campaigns in the area to defeat the jihadists there.

Responsibility for the attack against Charlie Hebdo was claimed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
, an offshoot of the main al-Qaeda organization.

When it begins in April 2020, the trial of the 14 will be the first such major process against jihadists in La Belle France since the 2017 trial over the 2012 attacks by Mohammed Merah.

Merah killed three soldiers in March 2012 before gunning down a rabbi, two of the rabbi’s children, aged three and five, and an eight-year-old girl at a Jewish school in Toulouse

. A police sniper killed him during a siege at his home.

His brother Abdelkader was in April handed a 30-year jail term as an accomplice in the murders.

A wave of jihadist attacks on La Belle France that started with the Charlie Hebdo killings has claimed 255 lives so far, including 90 at the Bataclan concert hall as part of coordinated strikes on multiple Gay Paree targets on November 13, 2015.

Latifa Ibn Ziaten, whose son, Imad, was murdered in 2012, discovered the graffiti Monday, she wrote on Twitter.

One graffito, written in misspelled French, read: "Jew, soon dead." Another said: "Your time is coming soon, dirty Jew." A third read: "Long live Merah."

Merah murdered Imad Ibn Ziaten, a soldier in the French army, days before he killed a teacher, Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, and two of his children, Arie and Gabriel, ages 6 and 3, and Miriam Monsonego, 8, at the Otzar Hatorah school in Toulouse.

Latifa Ibn Ziaten has campaigned with French Jews against anti-Semitism.

Brother of Toulouse killer given 30 years for aiding Jewish school attack
2019-04-19
[IsraelTimes] Abdelkader Merah found to have helped in 2012 terror spree in which soldiers, rabbi and three children were killed; prosecution had requested life term.

A Gay Paree appeal court on Thursday handed a 30-year jail term to Abdelkader Merah,

The verdict was received in silence in the courtroom, before sobs broke out among the victim’s relatives in the public gallery.

for 20 years being part of a terrorist conspiracy but had been cleared, by the lower court, of having a direct hand in his brother’s shooting spree.

The appeal court decision, reached after 12 hours of deliberations, the 30-year term falling short of the prosecution’s request for a life term for Merah.

, where he bumped off a rabbi, two of the rabbi’s children, aged three and five, and an eight-year-old girl.

The attack was the deadliest on Jews in La Belle France in three decades and marked the advent of a new threat from French-born turbans goaded by foreign terror groups to strike their homeland.

Mohammed Merah was killed by police after a 32-hour siege at his home, three days after the school assault.

The trial of Merah’s older brother and mentor Abdelkader was the first in connection with a string of attacks that have claimed the lives of over 240 people in La Belle France in recent years.

The appeal court also reduced the sentence of Fettah Malki, a friend of the Merah brothers, from 14 to 10 years, found guilty of associating with known criminals, rather than the greater crime of terrorist conspiracy.

It was Malki who supplied Mohammed Merah with a machine gun and a bullet-proof vest was also convicted of a terrorist conspiracy.

in 2012, was apprehended on March 25. He was caught in the Seine-et-Marne region, which is near Gay Paree.

Media reports said that a second man was arrested, too, on charges of complicity.

Police described the arrested as a 21-year-old male. They said he admitted he was planning to "kill some children and take others hostage," with the goal of dragging police into a shootout.

Merah was an Algerian-born French citizen, who had trained with the Al Qaeda terrorist organization. On March 19, 2012, he carried out his attack, murdering Rabbi Jonathan Sandler and two of his sons, as well as another 8-year-old girl. Police shot and killed Merah during his arrest three days later, after a 30-hour siege and shootout that left six officers maimed.

Frenchman Convicted of Jewish Museum Terror Murders
2019-03-08
[AnNahar] Frenchie Mehdi Nemmouche was found guilty Thursday of the "terrorist murders" of four people at Brussels' Jewish museum, the first case of a Syria jihad veteran to stage an attack in Europe.

Nemmouche, 33, sporting a trimmed beard and wearing a navy blue sweater, showed no emotion and stared into space as the verdict was delivered. He now faces a life sentence for the anti-Semitic attack in the Belgian capital on May 24, 2014, following his return from Syria's battlefields.

Sentencing could be as early as Friday.

The 12 jurors, accompanied by the presiding judge and two other magistrates, had deliberated for more than two days in secret at a Brussels hotel before returning their verdict.

Nemmouche was found to have killed the four victims in cold blood in less than 90 seconds, but he denied the accusation telling the court he had been "tricked."

This referred to arguments made by defence lawyers that Nemmouche was not to blame for the cold-blooded slaughter, but that he was caught up in some kind of plot targeting the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. The legal argument had centered around Israeli couple Miriam and Emmanuel Riva, the first two of the four people killed in the attack.

A young Belgian employee, Alexandre Strens, and French volunteer Dominique Sabrier were also murdered.

According to the defense, the museum shooting was not the work of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group but a "targeted execution" aimed at Mossad agents. The defense said the Israeli couple who were killed were in fact Mossad agents murdered by another man who had hunted them down.

The Riva family's lawyers have furiously rejected the theory and said attempts to pass off the tourists as secret agents was "an absolute scandal."

"Let's stop the joking," prosecutor Yves Moreau told the court earlier this week, describing the arguments presented by the defense as "complete nonsense" against compelling evidence.

Miriam Riva worked for Mossad but, as an accountant, she was not operational, said the investigating judges who traveled to Israel during their investigation.
And really, why would anyone deliberately murder an accountant? That’s crazy talk.
- 'DEEPLY CONVINCED' -
Yohan Benizri, the head of Belgium's Coordinating Committee of Jewish Organizations, denounced what he called a "nauseating conspiracy theory."

The 12 jurors also found fellow Frenchie Nacer Bendrer, 30, who was accused of supplying the weapons, to be the co-author of the attack.

The investigation showed that the two men had dozens of telephone conversations in April 2014, when Nemmouche was preparing for the killings.

Six days after the massacre, Nemmouche was placed in durance vile
You have the right to remain silent...
in the French city of Marseille in possession of a revolver and a Kalashnikov-type assault rifle.

At the trial, Bendrer admitted that Nemmouche had asked him for a Kalashnikov when he came to Brussels in early April, but claimed he never delivered it.

Among other personal effects, Nemmouche upon arrest carried a nylon jacket with gunshot residue, as well as a computer in which Sherlocks found six videos claiming the attack with an off-camera voiceover thought to be Nemmouche. In total, the prosecution said it had identified 23 pieces of evidence pointing to Nemmouche, who also physically resembles the shooter seen on the museum's surveillance video.

"We are both deeply convinced that the two accused did indeed commit these acts," one of the two prosecutors said in their indictment.

The prosecutors say the attack was the first carried out in Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
by a jihadist returning from fighting in Syria.

The Brussels killings came 18 months before the November 13, 2015, Gay Paree attacks which left 130 dead.
The Times of Israel has background:
Mehdi Nemmouche has been convicted of carrying out Europe’s first terror attack by an Islamist fighter returning from the war in Syria. But his journey from a French foster home to a Brussels court began not in a Middle Eastern desert but in a run-down industrial town.

Separately, he is also accused of acting as the jailer of four French journalists taken hostage by jihadists in Aleppo in 2013.

Nemmouche is already a case study in the radicalization of some young European Moslems. Belgium and La Belle France, in particular, fear the defeat of groups like the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in Syria will send more angry young men homewards. But Nemmouche seems to have been on a radical path long before he set off, in early 2013, for the so-called "caliphate" on the Euphrates.

The investigation into the May 2014 massacre in the museum has pieced together elements of his background.

TROUBLED AND ANGRY YOUTH
Nemmouche was born on April 17, 1985, in the northern French town of Roubaix, to a family of Algerian origin. He never knew his father and his mother was judged not "capable" of raising him, Sherlocks say.

Aged only three months, he was moved to a foster family in the northern industrial city of Lille, where he would stay ‐ off and on ‐ until he was 16. But his upbringing was not stable. He would make difficult trips to stay with his grandparents, and sometimes to care homes or a Gay Pareeian orphanage.

His foster parents, in documents seen by AFP, describe him as an “angry” youth, “capable of the worst as well as the most kindly” acts.

He committed his first known crime at 13, then at 16, he spent three weeks in a juvenile prison for a hold-up with an air pistol after being convicted by a children’s court. His criminal record grew ever longer in his late teens, with traffic offenses and muggings, and his grandmother lost track of him after his second jail term.

In 2007, aged 22, he headed to Provence in southern France after gaining a vocational qualification as an electrician, but soon fell back into trouble.

‘SADISTIC AND NARCISSISTIC’
Between December 2007 and December 2012, he spent five years in custody — and investigators believe this is when his ideas hardened. In prison, he was known as an “extremist proselytizer” who tried to organize group prayer and spoke of jihad and the 1995 “genocide of Muslims in Bosnia.” This linked him to the “Roubaix gang” — French Islamists who returned from the Bosnian war and carried out robberies to fund Al-Qaeda, some of whom he knew.

When his grandmother saw him in Tourcoing in December 2012, he had a long beard and was praying daily, something she had not seen before.

Less is known about his experiences in Syria, but three former French hostages have identified him as their “strict and violent” overseer. They say he did not hide his admiration for Mohammed Merah, who murdered three French soldiers, a Jewish teacher and three young children in Toulouse in 2012. Former hostage Nicolas Henin told the trial last month that he had “absolutely no doubt” that Nemmouche was his jailer and torturer in Syria. Henin described him as a “sadistic, playful and narcissistic” man.

Nemmouche, who was extradited to Belgium over the museum shooting after being arrested in Marseille, will go on trial in France over the hostages at a later date.

Held under tight security at a prison in Leuze-en-Hainaut, his lawyers describe him as a man of “steely will” who was bearing up well under the pressure of incarceration.

Brother of French Jewish school shooter gets 20 years for terror ties
2017-11-03
[IsraelTimes] Abdelkader Merah convicted of terrorist conspiracy, but cleared of helping brother Mohammed carry out 7 Toulouse shootings including 3 Jewish children

in 2012, including three Jewish children, was given a 20-year jail sentence Thursday for being part of a terrorist conspiracy.

Abdelkader Merah was however cleared of having a direct hand in his brother Mohammed’s killing of three soldiers and terror attack on a Jewish school, where he bumped off a rabbi, two of the rabbi’s children, aged three and five, and an eight-year-old girl.

The trial was the first arising out of a wave of violence by mostly homegrown radical Islamists that has claimed the lives of more than 240 people in La Belle France in the past five years.

Mohammed Merah’s March 2012 terror attack on Ozar Hatorah school, which he carried out in the name of al-Qaeda, was the deadliest on Jews in La Belle France in three decades.

Over the course of his eight-day killing spree, the 23-year-old also rubbed out three soldiers in the garrison town of Montauban before being killed by police after a 32-hour siege at his home.

His 35-year-old brother and mentor Abdelkader, who had nurtured his interest in jihad and defended the killings, was tossed in the calaboose
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
shortly afterwards on charges of complicity.

But while admitting to having been present when his brother stole the scooter he used in the attacks, Abdelkader denied any knowledge of his intentions.

His conviction on the separate charge of being part of a terrorist conspiracy was seen nonetheless by the victim’s families as a victory.

"Justice has been served," Patrick Klugman, lawyer for the family of slain rabbi Jonathan Sandler said.

A second defendant, Fettah Malki, who supplied Mohammed Merah with a machine gun and a bullet-proof vest, was given a 14-year sentence after also being found guilty of involvement in a terrorist conspiracy.

From petty crime to terrorism
The trial lifted the lid on a dysfunctional family living on the margins of society in the high-rise Toulouse suburb of Les Izards.

Three of the five children born to Algerian immigrant parents, who later divorced, came under the spell of radical Islamists.

Both Abdelkader and Mohammed spent time in prison for acts of delinquency ‐ an experience that radicalized the younger Merah and left him thirsting for Dire Revenge against La Belle France.

In 2011, he traveled to the lawless tribal regions of Pakistain near the border with Afghanistan to join the Qaeda-affiliated Jund al-Khalifa.
...or Soldiers of the Caliphate, this is one of several groups by that name, the others being based in Algeria (sworn to ISIS) and Kazakhstan. More about this one can be read here...
Returning to La Belle France, he was questioned by intelligence services but insisted his trip had been solely for tourism.

Prosecutors had presented Abdelkader as the real brains behind the attacks and called for him to be given life in prison, without possibility of parole for 22 years.

But Merah’s lawyers urged the jury not to make him a scapegoat for his brother’s crimes to satisfy the public desire for a conviction.

Brother of Toulouse terrorist goes on trial for aiding attacks
2017-10-14
[IsraelTimes] Abdelkader Merah denies helping Mohammed Merah shoot dead 7 people, including 3 Jewish schoolchildren, in 2012

The older brother of a French jihadi who killed Jewish schoolchildren and soldiers in 2012 says he had no idea what his sibling was plotting.

Abdelkader Merah testified Friday for the first time in his trial for alleged complicity with his brother Mohammed’s three attacks in and near Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
Merah is the chief surviving suspect because Mohammed died in a shootout with police.

He said he was with his brother the day he stole the motor scooter used in the killings, but didn’t report the theft to police because he didn’t want to be a snitch.

"I’m not Mohammed Merah,
...the Algerian-French "lone wolf" who trained with Al Qaeda in Pakistan and quite possibly was a French informant before going on the killing spree that ended with his dramatic death in a shootout with French police...
I am Abdelkader Merah. There is a big difference," he insisted to the court.
True. Elder brother is merely a known wolf with a habit of supporting real jihadis -- a number of them relatives -- in their endeavours, though such things are felonies earning serious jail time. Mohammed was an actual jihadi.
The attacks, which he carried out in the name of al-Qaeda, were the first in a wave of jihadist assaults in La Belle France that resumed in 2015 with the shootings at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo

terror group claimed the attack as the work of one of its "soldiers," though a source close to the investigation said there was as yet no solid evidence linking the man to the group.

Abdelkader Merah, 35, is the first person to be tried over the spate of killings.

Reacting to his brother’s actions in 2012 Abdelkader Merah had declared himself "proud," saying that "every Moslem would like to give his life to kill his enemy."

He is accused of helping to facilitate his brother’s attacks, in particular by helping him steal the scooter used in three separate shootings.

He is being tried alongside 34-year-old Fettah Malki, accused of giving Mohammed Merah a bulletproof jacket, an Uzi submachine gun and ammunition.

Neither of the accused denies helping Merah obtain materials but claimed they were unaware of his intentions.

Abdelkader Merah faces a possible life sentence while Malki could get 20 years in prison.

Nicknamed "Bin Laden" in his neighborhood, Abdelkader Merah was known to intelligence services for his ties to radical Islamists in Toulouse.

Prosecutors claim he shared his brother’s ideology, and that the siblings were repeatedly in contact in the days before the killings.

Toulouse killer’s mother received public housing to be near son’s trial

[IsraelTimes] A French political activists says Zoulikha Merah was favored despite allegations that her son aided his brother in 2012 murder of 4 Jewish civilians and 3 soldiers.

Municipal officials gave preferential treatment to the mother of an Islamist terrorist who killed Jews in Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
, allegedly with help from his brother, a French political activist said.

Gilbert Collard, a supporter of the far-right politician Marine Le Pen of the National Front party, wrote to French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe last week to complain that Zoulikha Merah was prioritized over other applicants for public housing based on a request in which she cited the need to be near the trial of her eldest son. He is accused of helping his younger brother, Mohammed, kill four Jews and three soldiers in 2012.

"This lady effectively received absolute priority for public housing in Tremblay," Collard wrote. He did not provide any evidence of the preferential treatment he said Zoulikha Merah had received.

The western municipality that Collard named is located 195 miles from Gay Paree, where last month the trial of 35-year-old Abdelkader Merah opened five years after his initial arrest for allegedly helping his brother carry out deadly shootings in Toulouse. But it is much closer to Gay Paree than Zoulikha Merah’s home in Toulouse, which is located 410 miles south of the capital.

Before his trial began, Abdelkader Merah was held in Vivonne, which is located 233 miles from Toulouse. But his mother’s request to be near him was filed when he was still being held in Villepinte near Gay Paree, Collard also wrote.

In addition to Abdelkader Merah, another suspected Islamist, 34-year-old Fettah Malki, also is facing charges of assisting Mohammed Merah carry out terrorist attacks in March 2012. Mohammed Merah bumped off three children and a rabbi at the school. He was killed in a shootout with police at an apartment three days after the school killings.

Both the older brother and Malki have denied having any prior knowledge of Mohammed Merah’s planned attacks, but police say they have evidence suggesting both were involved in preparations. Abdelkader Merah also supported his brother spiritually and psychologically in his becoming a terrorist, the prosecution said.

Born to a family of four children, Mohammed Merah was "raised to be an anti-Semite because anti-Semitism was part of the atmosphere at home," his youngest brother, Abdelghani, said in 2013.

Abdelghani Merah has denounced his family publicly, calling their denials and claims of innocence part of their belief in taqqiyah ‐ an Islamic term meaning "subterfuge" in the service of jihad.

The Merahs’ sister, Souad, fled La Belle France after authorities there questioned her for saying she was proud of her brother. She and her four children were seen three years ago in the Ottoman Turkish city of Gazyantep, where they are believed to have crossed into Syria to join the Islamic State

Jihadist who threw grenade in French kosher shop gets 28 years
2017-06-24
[Ynet] The French jihadist who perpetrated the 2012 attack in Sarcelles, injuring one, is to serve 28 years behind bars; prosecution describes decision as 'a miracle'.

A French jihadist who threw a grenade at a Jewish store in 2012
...that would be the Naouri kosher supermarket...
was sentenced overnight to 28 years in prison by a court which also sent several others to jail after the dismantling of an Islamist cell which had planned other attacks.
When its members were arrested in late 2012, the "Cannes-Torcy cell" was described as the most dangerous jihadist group in France.
In addition to grenade-thrower Jeremy Bailly, the jury court sentenced eight others to prison for between 12 and 20 years, with the lengthier terms handed to two men who spent time in Syria, where the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. bad boy group has its base.

The convictions in a late night ruling on Thursday brought a close to an affair that predated the spate of Islamist-inspired attacks in La Belle France from early 2015 onwards, in which more than 230 people have been killed.
France was at the time roiled by protests against Israel and naturally also attacks on local Jews and Jewish institutions.
Another member of the jihadist cell--Jeremie Louis-Sidney--died in a shootout with police when they tried to arrest him in the eastern French city of Strasbourg in October 2012.

The grenade-attack at a Jewish food store in Sarcelles
......known as "Little Jerusalem" because of the large number of North African Jews who settled there after immigrating in the 1960s, as did a large number of non-Jewish North Africans. They have on occasion clashed...
north of Gay Paree the same year injured one person but killed nobody, an outcome prosecutors described as "a miracle".

The dismantling of the cell allowed police to thwart another attack planned against an army camp in the Var area of southern La Belle France in 2013, prosecutors said.

They added that the cell, half of whose members were converts to Islam who bonded on a camping holiday in Cannes, southern La Belle France, had also planned but not executed an attack on a McDonald's fast-food restaurant.

In all, the trial concerned 20 people. Two were acquitted. Among others sentenced was a 23-year-old Laotian man who was judged as the driver of the car from which Bailly hurled the grenade. He was enjugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
for 18 years.

Among others sentenced but not present in court were a man who joined the Islamic State bad boy group in Syria and thought to have possibly died there, and another on the run in Africa.
The Times of Israel adds:
Analysts say the Cannes-Torcy network signaled a historic shift in La Belle France’s struggle against terrorism, to battling mass attacks by Islamic faceless myrmidons inspired, or even guided, by foreigners.

During the hearing at a special anti-terror tribunal in Gay Paree, the cell was described as "the missing link" between the self-proclaimed al-Qaeda terrorist Mohammed Merah -- who murdered three Jewish children and a teacher in an attack at their school in the southwestern city of Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
in 2012 -- and the Islamic State network that hit the Bataclan concert hall in 2015, killing 130 people.

The prosecution demanded "exemplary punishments" for the cell, headed by Jeremie Louis-Sidney and described as a violent leader with a "boiling" hatred for Jews.

Kevin Phan, the group’s driver during the attack, was sentenced to 18 years in jail.

Sentences of 14 to 20 years’ imprisonment were given to gang members who had traveled to Syria, including Ibrahim Boudina, who spent sixteen months in Syria and was accused of "returning to commit an attack" on the Cote d’Azur.

Lawyers said the court had noted the diverse profiles of the twenty men, some of whom were from well-to-do families, and came from Algeria, Laos and La Belle France. Half were converts to Islam.

At least three hurt in French school shooting

afterwards in possession of a rifle, two handguns and two grenades after the attack at the Tocqueville high school in the sleepy hillside town of Grasse in southern La Belle France, police told AFP.

The head of the regional government, Christian Estrosi, told AFP that the shooting was "not at all" being seen as a terror attack at this stage.
The head of the regional government, Christian Estrosi, told AFP that the shooting was "not at all" being seen as a terror attack at this stage, adding that the principal and two other pupils were lightly injured.

There was conflicting information about whether a second suspect was on the run, with police initially saying they were looking for an accomplice. Another police source said the shooter acted alone.

La Belle France is still in a state of emergency after a series of Islamist turban attacks including the massacre in Gay Paree in November 2015, claimed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (IS) group, and a truck attack in Nice, just 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Grasse, in July last year.

The shooting comes about 40 days before a two-stage presidential election in April and May in which security is one of the main issues on voters' minds.

The motive for the attack was still unknown.

Estrosi told La Belle France Info radio that the head teacher had been shot but apparently was not seriously injured.

"According to initial information that I have, we're not talking about an injury that could have life-threatening consequences," he said.

All schools in Grasse were locked down after the late-morning shooting, which led panicked students to flee the school and hide, local authorities said.

The French government has bolstered security outside schools following a series of Islamist turban attacks since January 2015 that have claimed hundreds of lives.

More than 3,000 reservists were called up to help keep watch outside the country's 64,000 primary and secondary schools for the return to the school year in September.

Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve cut short a trip to the northern Somme area because of the Grasse shooting, as well as a letter kaboom at the offices of the International Monetary Fund in Gay Paree on Thursday.

US-style school shootings are almost unheard-of in La Belle France, a country with low levels of gun violence.

The last major attack in a school was in 2012, when an Islamic Death Eater from Toulouse

, Mohammed Merah, rubbed out three children and a teacher at a Jewish school in the city before being killed by police.
An Nahar reveals all, or at least the miscreant's motivation:
Local prosecutor Fabienne Atzori ruled out a terror motive and said the shooting appeared to have been motivated by the gunman's "bad relationships" with classmates.

The teenager was described by Vallaud-Belkacem as "unstable and fascinated by guns" and was carrying a rifle, two handguns and grenades when he was detained by police shortly after the lunchtime attack.

He offered no resistance to his arrest, the prosecutor said.

The suspect, who has not been named publicly as a minor, had shared pictures and videos on social media of infamous U.S. school shootings, including the 1999 Columbine massacre.
And from Deutsche Welle, more on the incident:
Police and local authorities said the headmaster was specifically targeted in the attack on Alexis de Tocqueville high school.

after the shooting, police told journalists. Interior ministry front man Pierre-Henry Brandet said eight people had been injured.

"I heard a loud bang then two more sounds," a 16-year-old student only identified as Benjamin told regional daily "Nice Matin." "I turned and saw someone in the yard firing with a pump-action shotgun. He shot through the windows of the classroom which looks onto the yard. When I saw that, I ran."

French newspaper "Le Figaro" reported the student shot the headmaster in the arm with a shotgun, injuring two others. It reported security forces later defused an bomb at the school.

Another student identified as Thomas told "Nice Matin" the headmaster remained calm, despite being shot, attempting to reason with the attacker. He said students' bags were normally checked at the entrance, postulating whether he smuggled the weapons in over a back fence.

Al-Shabaab Magazine: 'We'll Keep Marching Till We Reach the State of Maine'
2017-02-12
There are parts of Maine where that would be a really bad idea.
[PJMedia] A news issue of Al-Shabaab's magazine calls on jihadists to emulate the British converts who murdered a soldier on a Woolwich street in 2013, along with a poem warning that jihadists would be "marching" to Maine.
Do they have those floaty feet things to get across the Atlantic?
The issue of Gaidi Mtaani also features a lengthy story about late al-Qaeda recruiter and cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, whose lectures are cited by American terrorists to this day, playing paintball in San Diego in the 1990s.

The Somali terror group, allied with al-Qaeda, has previously urged Western jihadists to draw inspiration from the attack on 25-year-old Fusilier Lee Rigby, who was first struck by a car and then stabbed and hacked by Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale. London-born Adebolajo, 28, who was raised Christian before converting to Islam, filmed a statement before police arrived at the murder scene, vowing "you people will never be safe." Both are serving life in prison.
Should have danced a jig on the end of a rope.
Al-Shabaab's magazine dubs Adebolajo 2013's "Muslim of the Year," declaring "good men are hard to find."
No wonder the feminazis love them
"In an age stained with defeatism and cowardice, a room full of Mujahid Adebolajo is exactly what today's world needs," the article, bylined Abu Maryam, states. "...If a pictures speaks a thousand words, then blood in British streets speak a million words. Knowing that the British Government only understands the language of violence, instead of writing his letter on paper, Adebolajo decided to write his letter on the streets of Southeast London using the blood of a British soldier."

Adebolajo was "practically teaching the British public and the world in general, the elementary principle of universalism" through the murder, the terror group argued, with eye-for-an-eye reasoning.

"World media and left wing conservatives can deceptively portray Mujahid as a psychopathic slayer if they please, but after watching the video and hearing his words, deep down inside everyone knew he was making perfect sense. Amidst the hustle and bustle of London streets, specifically targeting a British soldier once stationed in Afghanistan clearly expresses the political motives behind the killings and disproves the fallacy that the attack was a haphazard intent to randomly slay Britons," the article continues.

"It's quite ignorant and presumptuous of non-Muslims and Muslims alike to think that the driving force of Mujahid's actions were fueled by an inherent disdain for British culture or values," the terror group argues, noting that if Adebolajo just wanted to kill fellow Britons there were more people at the scene he could have attacked.

"Their message couldn't be any simpler, 'We swear by Allaah the All-Mighty we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone.' These same axioms expressed by Mujahid in England, were reiterated by Nidal Hasan, Mohamed Mirah, and the same concepts that will continue to be personified through bloodshed in Western streets, unless taken seriously." Hasan killed 13 at Fort Hood in 2009, while Mohammed Merah killed French soldiers and Jewish children during a 2012 shooting spree in Toulouse and Montauban.
Oh... we'll leave you alone and you will stop fighting... when you are dead. Pretty hard to fight someone then
Merah was born in Toulouse while Hasan was born in Virginia, keeping with the article's theme of urging attacks at home by jihadists native to Western countries.

A poem bylined by the same author of the article says to "tell the West we're a roaring flame/That can't be doused that can't be tamed/And until you cease your bombs and planes/We'll keep marching till we reach the State of Maine."

A lengthy article in the magazine describes the experiences of a Western jihadist -- one "of the generation of young Muslims who grew up in the west during the 90s who were at a high risk of losing their Muslim identity" -- getting to know al-Awlaki and later reconnecting with him in Yemen.

The author says he was living in San Diego while al-Awlaki attended San Diego State University and became imam of the Masjid Ar-Ribat al-Islami mosque near campus. He described going to the nickel arcade and paintball ranges east of San Diego with the cleric as al-Awlaki "was particularly fond of paintball activities."

At this time, New Mexico-born al-Awlaki had already gone through training in Afghanistan and returned home.

"At the beginning of the first match, I remember seeing the Sheikh move forward and then he crouched down and started crawling on the ground slowly moving forward. After some time I was shot and moved to the sidelines to watch how the match would finish. I looked over to where I had last seen the Sheikh and couldn’t see any sign of him. I kept surveying the surrounding areas looking for any sign of movement when all of a sudden there was a firefight a good fifty feet in front of the area where I had been scanning and I was surprised to see the sheikh as he was taking cover," the author described of a paintball outing.
How cute. The US Sniper just killed you about 50 times while you were scanning.
"I remember thinking, 'How was it possible for him to move all that distance with- out being detected?' It was amazing as he is a tall brother. The brothers commented and all agreed that the Sheikh was very skilled in close quarter military tactics. I would not find out until many years later that the Sheikh had been to Afghanistan in the early 90s."
I still would bet on a platoon of rangers against his forces. Would be a short but entertaining fight

Paris Attacks: More than 10,000 on French list of potential terror suspects
2015-11-17
[AlAhram] La Belle France has listed more than 10,000 people suspected of being radicalised or potential security threats, including homegrown assailant Omar Ismail Mostefai who killed scores of people at Gay Paree's Bataclan music on Friday.
No doubt it is much the same in the US and elsewhere. No wonder they're losing track of people.
According to police sources, the so-called "fiche S" ("S file" in French) is updated daily to include individuals suspected of links to a terrorist movement or group.

The "S" stands for the suspects' potential to endanger the "security of the state".

The list has 15 categories spanning everyone from football hooligans to battle-hardened jihadists returning from Iraq and Syria.

The suspects come into the spotlight if they are tossed in the slammer
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
or subject to a check after which they are immediately on the radar of the intelligence services.

"There are more than 10,000 people who are on the fiche S list," Prime Minister Manuel Valls said over the weekend.

Some of them are already known to security forces or sentenced for acts of terror, while the others are suspected of either having been radicalised or susceptible to it.

More and more cases of radicalised assailants have surfaced recently including the Al-Qaeda-linked gunman Mohammed Merah who killed seven people in and around the southern city of Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
in 2012.

The same was true of the attackers who targeted the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
and a Jewish supermarket in February this year, killing 17 people.

And Yassin Salhi, who killed and decapitated his employer in Isere in southeastern La Belle France in June had been on the S list for two years but had never come to the attention of the police.

This can happen because the suspects are not automatically subject to surveillance.

"It's more or less an indicator, like a thermometer that one has to monitor and feed all the time for it to be efficient," a police officer said.

There is cross-border cooperation and intelligence-sharing on drawing up suspects to be added to the list.

Moroccan Ayoub El Khazzani who in August attacked passengers on a train travelling from Amsterdam to Gay Paree before being overpowered by three Americans, was on the list, thanks to warnings from Spanish and Belgian authorities who had alerted the French. Khazzani had lived both in Spain and Belgium.
