Two explosions in Afghanistan kill at least three |
2021-02-22 |
[Aljazeera] Separate bomb explosions in Afghanistan killed at least three people including a child and wounded 20 others on Sunday, Afghan officials said. Kabul police spokesman Ferdaws Faramarz said a roadside bomb targeted a police car, killing the driver and a nearby child. Five other civilians including children were wounded. The second blast was caused by a bomb placed in a crowded market in southern Helmand province, killing one civilian and wounding 15 others including two police, said provincial police spokesman, Mohammad Zaman Hamdard. No group immediately claimed responsibility for any of the attacks. Afghan police officials said that an investigation was under way. Bombings and assassinations have occurred on a near-daily basis in the capital, Kabul, in recent months, targeting Afghan security forces, civilian government employees, journalists, religious scholars and civil society activists. Many of the attacks have used sticky bombs — explosive devices with magnets that are attached to vehicles and detonated by remote control or timer. On Saturday, at least five people were killed after three back-to-back explosions rocked various parts of the city. Afghan security forces inspect the site of a bomb blast in Kabul, Afghanistan, February 21, 2021 [Omar Sobhani/Reuters] The ISIL (ISIS) group’s local affiliate has claimed responsibility for some of the attacks, but many go unclaimed, with the government blaming the Taliban. The Taliban has denied responsibility for most of the attacks. In the Doha agreement signed in February 2020, the Taliban committed to peace talks with the Afghan government and to significantly reduce violence. As part of the deal, the United States pledged to withdraw all international troops by April this year. However, violent conflict has continued in Afghanistan, making it difficult to implement the agreement. The new US administration under President Joe Biden is reviewing the withdrawal plan. There are about 2,500 US troops and 10,000 NATO soldiers in Afghanistan now. |

Suicide Bombers, Gunmen Kill 71 in Attacks on Afghan Security Forces |
2017-10-18 |
![]() The Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... claimed the more deadly of the two assaults, a coordinated attack on police in the southeast city of Gardez in Paktia province. That assault killed 41 people and injured 158, according to the interior ministry, and left hospital officials calling for blood donations. There were desperate scenes as relatives queued for news of loved ones after the hours-long battle. A separate ambush blamed on the Taliban in the neighboring province of Ghazni killed 25 security officials and five civilians with 10 maimed, the interior ministry said. Afghanistan's army and police, on the front line against the Taliban since foreign combat forces pulled back in December 2014, have suffered shocking casualties over the past year. Their ranks are beset by corruption and desertion. "The hospital is overwhelmed and we call on people to donate blood," said Shir Mohammad Karimi, deputy health director in Gardez, who put the number of maimed there at more than 200. Doctors and nurses rushed to attend to the maimed women, children and police filling the corridors where some bodies also lay. Outside, university students formed a queue to donate blood, an AFP photographer said. The attack, claimed by the Taliban in a tweet, began when two jacket wallahs driving an explosives-laden truck and a Humvee blew them up near the training center, which is close to the Paktia police headquarters. The blasts flattened a building and enabled button men to force their way inside the compound, according to officials and the interior ministry. "Most of the victims are civilians who had come to the police headquarters to get their passports and national IDs," a statement from the Paktia governor's office said. A university student who was in class at the time said he heard "a big boom" which shook the building and shattered windows. "As we were trying to find our way (out of the building) I heard a second blast and then the dust and dirt covered us in the class. Several of my classmates were maimed by broken glass," Noor Ahmad told AFP. The battle between the attackers, armed with guns and boom jackets, and security forces lasted around five hours before it ended with all five murderous Moslems killed, officials said. Photos posted on Twitter showed two large plumes of smoke rising above the city. The second attack, in Ghazni some 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Gardez, followed a similar pattern involving faceless myrmidons detonating an explosives-laden Humvee near a police headquarters then storming the building, Haref Noori, the Ghazni governor's front man, told AFP. "Dozens of Taliban" were killed in the attack, Ghazni police chief Mohammad Zaman said. Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani ![]() condemned the attacks and praised the "bravery and sacrifice" of security forces. - Drone strike - The attacks are the latest in a series of assaults on security installations, including one on a military hospital in Kabul in March which may have killed up to 100 people, and a devastating attack on a base in Mazar-e-Sharif which left 144 people dead. They came one day after four-way talks between Afghanistan, Pakistain, the United States and China were held in Oman with the aim of ending the Taliban's 16-year insurgency. Paktia province borders Pakistain's militancy-plagued tribal areas where the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network ![]() Tuesday's attack in Gardez began hours after a U.S. dronezap in Pakistain's ![]() ...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora... , part of which borders Paktia, killed at least 26 Haqqani bully boys, officials have said. A senior commander in the Afghan Taliban told AFP on condition of anonymity the attack was in retaliation for the U.S. aerial assault, the deadliest targeting murderous Moslems in the Pak tribal region this year. On Monday the U.S. also carried out strikes in the Jaji Maidan district of Paktia "under counter-terror authorities," said U.S. Forces front man Navy Captain Tom Gresback. In Kurram last week the Pak military rescued a U.S.-Canadian family who had been kidnapped by murderous Moslems in Afghanistan in 2012. The murderous Moslem group is known for its frequent use of suicide bombers. The Haqqanis have also been accused of assassinating top Afghan officials and holding kidnapped Westerners for ransom. These include the recently rescued hostages Canadian Joshua Boyle, his American wife Caitlan Coleman, and their three children -- all born in captivity -- as well as U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who was released in 2014. |

U.S Will Not Allow IS Safe Havens in Afghanistan |
2016-08-10 |
Following reports about Daesh and Taliban's joining forces in Nangarhar province, the U.S Department of State has said that they are monitoring terrorist activity in Afghanistan and that they will not let Daesh and its factions establish safe havens in the country. They also said they would see to it that the group does not secure material support in the country. Commander of 201 Selab Corps, General Mohammad Zaman Wazir, recently said the Taliban and Daesh have in the past clashed but in the past two months, no cross-fighting has been recorded. However, a number of Daesh commanders were recently killed in military operations, Wazir said. "At least 23 Daesh commanders including the commander of Khurasan faction, Hafiz Saeed, were killed in foreign troops' drone strikes and their bodies all still there," Wazir said. Commenting on Wazir's statement, the U.S State Department press office director, Elizabeth Trudeau, said in an chat with media that they are aware of the reports and that they are monitoring the terrorist group's activities in the country. "We're aware of the reports. We're obviously monitoring for the presence of Daesh-affiliated individuals and groups in Afghanistan. We remain actively engaged with the government of Afghanistan, as well as our partners in the region, to deny terrorist organizations such as Daesh or their branches safe havens and material support," she said. The Zabul provincial council meanwhile said they are concerned about an increase in Daesh activities in parts of the province. "Daesh rebels are active in Khak Afghan and Arghandab districts [in Zabul] where they have erected over 300 tents and are living," said Ata Jan Haqbayan, a member of the Zabul provincial council. However, Zabul police chief Mirwais Noorzai said they launched military operations and have eliminated Daesh fighters from the area. "We carried out military operations in areas where Daesh had activities and we eliminated them, but in some areas they are out of security forces' access," Noorzai added. The Interior Ministry meanwhile said Daesh is a threat to the country's security, but the alliance with Taliban is not an important matter. "We believe that the alliance of Taliban and Daesh is a fragile issue and it will not continue. But Daesh is a threat and there is a serious will in government to destroy and uproot all terrorist groups," said Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the interior ministry. Daesh has reportedly increased its activities in the country's eastern parts – including Nangarhar province. However, the Afghan Defense Ministry this week said they have increased air and ground operations against the insurgent group to end their activities in the eastern regions. Islamic State, Taliban form alliance in Afghanistan to focus on US-backed forces |
2016-08-10 |
[FOXNEWS] Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... and the Taliban, after more than a year of fierce combat, have forged a patchwork cease-fire across much of eastern Afghanistan that has helped both insurgencies regroup and counter U.S.-backed efforts to dislodge them. Until several months ago, Islamic State fought bloody battles with local Taliban units over fighters and territory in several provinces. The long-running Taliban insurgency has sought to stamp out its smaller rival, which only emerged in 2014. Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces took advantage of the conflict, engaging the forces of Evil on multiple fronts to push them back and reclaim territory they held. But recently, Afghan officials say, the two insurgencies have worked out local deals to stop fighting each other and turn their sights on the government. The upshot is that Islamic State has been able to focus on fighting U.S.- backed Afghan forces in Nangarhar The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Kunar is Haqqani country..... , establishing a new foothold in a longtime Taliban and former al Qaeda stronghold. "They fought deadly battles with the Taliban before. But over the past two months, there has been no fighting among them," said Gen. Mohammad Zaman Waziri, who commands Afghan troops in the east. Islamic State’s presence in Afghanistan is still nascent. Even in its stronghold Nangarhar, Afghan officials estimate the group remains several times smaller than the Taliban. And the cease-fire between them could break apart at any time. |
