Syria’s Homs settles into uneasy calm after brief eruption of sectarian violence
2024-12-29
[IsraelTimes] Security forces flood major mixed city, patrolling and checking IDs, days after gunfire at protest by members of Alawite minority; Christians say new regime protecting churches

Syria’s new security forces checked IDs and searched cars in the central city of Homs on Thursday, a day after protests by members of the Alawite minority erupted in gunfire and stirred fears that the country’s fragile peace could break down.

A tense calm prevailed after checkpoints were set up throughout the country’s third-largest city, which has a mixed population of Sunni and Shia Moslems, Alawites and Christians.

The security forces are controlled by the former Death Eater group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
, which led the charge that unseated former president Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
. On the road from Damascus, security teams at the checkpoints waved cars through perfunctorily, but in Homs, they checked IDs and opened the trunk of each car to look for weapons.

Armed men blocked the road leading to the square formerly named for Assad’s father, Hafez al-Assad, where one foot was all that remained of a statue of him that once stood in the center of the traffic roundabout. The square has been renamed Freedom Square, although some call it "the donkey’s square," referring to Assad.

Protests erupted there Wednesday among Alawites — the minority sect to which the Assad family belongs — after a video circulated showing an Alawite shrine in Aleppo being vandalized. Government officials later issued a statement saying that the video was old.

Wednesday’s protests began peacefully, said Alaa Amran, the newly installed police chief of Homs, but then "some suspicious parties... related to the former regime opened fire on both security forces and demonstrators, and there were some injuries."

Security forces flooded the area and imposed a curfew to restore order, he said.

Mohammad Ali Hajj Younes, an electrician who has a shop next to the square, said the people who instigated the violence are "the same shabiha who used to come into my shop and rob me, and I couldn’t say anything," using a term referring to pro-Assad militia members.

The protests were part of a larger flare-up of violence Wednesday. Pro-Assad Death Eaters attacked members of the new security forces near the coastal town of Tartous, killing 14 and wounding 10, according to the Interior Ministry in the transitional government.

In response, security forces launched raids "pursuing the remnants of Assad’s militias," state media reported. The state-run SANA news agency reported late Thursday that festivities broke out in the village of Balqasa in a rural part of Homs province.

The unrest left many people fearful that the relatively peaceful conditions that have prevailed since Assad’s fall could break down into sectarian fighting, as the country begins to recover following nearly 14 years of civil war.

Those who instigated the violence "are supported by parties that may be external that want strife for Syria to return it to square one, the square of sectarianism," Amran said.

Ahmad al-Bayyaa, an Alawite in the al-Zahra neighborhood of Homs, said he and his wife and three daughters fled to the coastal town of Baniyas when Death Eater forces first arrived, but came back a day later, after hearing from neighbors that the fighters had not harmed civilians.

"We had been given the idea that there would be slaughter and killing based on our identity, and nothing like that happened," he said. "We came back, and nobody asked to see my ID from the coast to Homs."

Before Assad’s fall, al-Bayyaa said, he spent 10 years in hiding to avoid a call-up for reserve army service and was afraid to cross a checkpoint in his own neighborhood. After the former Syrian army collapsed in the face of the HTS-led advance, residents of the neighborhood set up a fruit and vegetable stand on an abandoned tank in a gesture of mockery.

In the predominantly Christian Homs suburb of Fayrouzeh, a group of teenage girls took each other’s pictures next to a giant cutout of Santa Claus with a Christmas tree in the town square.

Residents of the area said their initial fears that the country’s new rulers would target religious minorities were quickly laid to rest. HTS was once aligned with al-Qaeda, but its leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, has cut ties with the group and since coming to power has preached religious coexistence.

"We had a very beautiful holiday even though there was some anxiety before it," said Fayrouzeh resident Sarab Kashi. "The guys from HTS volunteered and stood as guards on the door of the churches."

The city’s Sunni majority, meanwhile, welcomed the new administration. Many of the young men now guarding its streets were originally from Homs and were evacuated to opposition-held Idlib when Assad’s forces solidified control of their areas years ago.

"These guys were young boys when they took them in the green buses, and they were crying," said Wardeh Mohammed, gesturing at a group of young men manning a checkpoint in front of a grocery store on one of the city’s main streets. "Thank God, they have come back as young men, as fighters who made us proud."

The country’s new rulers have scrambled to impose order after the initial anarchic days after Assad’s fall.

The former police and security forces — widely known for corruption — were disbanded, and members of the police force in what was formerly a regional government headed by HTS in the opposition-held northwest were deployed to other areas.

Amran, the police chief, said recruitment efforts are underway to build up the forces, but he acknowledged that the current numbers are "not sufficient to control security 100%." The new security forces have also struggled to stem the proliferation of weapons in the hands of civilians or non-state groups, he said.

Al-Sharaa has said that the country’s patchwork of former rebel groups will come together in one unified national army, but it remained unclear exactly how that would happen or whether the groups can avoid infighting.

In Homs, it was clear that several different armed factions patrolled the streets, in a sometimes uneasy coordination. An HTS official hastened to explain that a handful of gunnies wearing patches with an insignia sometimes associated with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
were not members of his group.

Many feared another flare-up of violence.

"From what happened yesterday, it’s clear that some people want to take the country backwards" to the worst days of the country’s civil war, al-Bayya said, "and no one wants to go back 14 years."

Mohammad al-Houthi: Yemen undeterred by latest airstrikes on Sana'a
2024-12-19
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Mohammad Ali al-Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
, a member of the Supreme Political Council, confirmed that the American-British Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s on the capital Sana'a and Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i provinces will not deter the Yemeni people from supporting the Paleostinian people in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
This came during a visit by Mohammad Ali al-Houthi, along with Minister of Information Hashim Sharaf al-Din, to the al-Ardi complex in the Bab al-Yemen area of Sana'a, to inspect the damage caused by two airstrikes waged by the US- British aggression forces early today.

He pointed out that the US-British airstrikes will not affect the Yemenis or their military capabilities. ''The more the US targets and bombs Yemen, the more steadfast, defiant, victorious, and prepared we become for confrontation,'' he said.
Well all good then. On to victory, assholes!
''If the US and British attacks were able to achieve their goals, we would have stopped on the first day. However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the Revolution Leader clearly stated that the US threatened to stop humanitarian relief and launch direct military actions against Yemen, making multiple threats if Yemen did not stop supporting Gaza. The Revolution Leader's response was explicit: our operations in support of Gaza will not stop until the aggression and siege on Gaza end,'' he added.

''The attacks by America and its allies continue against our country, but targeting the capital Sana'a and other provinces will not deter us from supporting Gaza. We are moving in the right direction, and we fully understand the truth of the grievances faced by the Paleostinian people, just as the Yemeni people face their own hardships,'' he stated.

He explained that the US Navy and the countries attacking Yemen are afraid of the heroes, leadership, and personnel of the Ministry of Defense. ''The steadfastness of our heroes is due to their belief, awareness of the hegemonic plans of America, Britannia, and Israel, as well as their love for their homeland and their understanding of the nature and course of the conspiracy being woven against the Yemeni people,'' he added.

Mohammad Ali al-Houthi considered the leader's weekly speech as a motivation for the people of Yemen, particularly for the Ministry of Defense and the Yemeni army, which faces the enemy with pride, innovation, and continued development of military capabilities according to the guidance of the wise revolutionary leadership.

''We assure the Yemeni people that the al-Aradi complex will remain a symbol of resistance, steadfastness, and defiance. Its heroes will defeat all aggressors and will not fear anyone,'' he declared.

''Yemen does not care about America or its allies in the region, because we have faced them for ten years. We are now in a phase of de-escalation, and if Washington stops its support for the Zionist enemy, which is annihilating the people of Gaza, that would be a better option for us to halt military operations,'' added the Supreme Political Council member.

He condemned the US-British airstrikes, considering them barbaric and terrorist acts that will not change Yemen's position in supporting Gaza and the Paleostinian cause. He stressed that the battle continues against all who attack our country.

Mohammad Ali al-Houthi reiterated that ''America's interests are being targeted by the Yemeni armed forces, which have prepared a plan to confront America within the framework of their operational capacity. The Yemeni people and the army heroes, led by the Revolution Leader, will not fear any movement. The strikes of our heroes in the missile and drone forces has reached the Mediterranean, Arabian, Red, and Indian seas, and even 'Yaffa.' We have no red lines as long as the sons of Yemen are being bombed and targeted, and as long as the war of annihilation continues in Gaza.''

Inside story: Hezbollah, Iran and the downfall of Assad
2024-12-10
[AMWAJ] The sudden downfall of Bashar Al-Assad has raised a number of questions about the thinking and roles of his supporters. First and foremost, Russia—the most powerful foreign ally of the Syrian government—played a pivotal role as events unfolded.

According to one high-ranking regional diplomatic source, Assad’s recent visit to Moscow was a turning point. While the Syrian leader was in Russia, forces led by the Sunni Islamist Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) unexpectedly seized Aleppo without a fight. Upon his return to Syria, Assad is said to have expressed anger toward his army. In private meetings, Amwaj.media has learned, he lambasted his commanders as corrupt and untrustworthy—describing his army as a collection of “thieves” who cannot be relied upon. While Assad’s Russian host and counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had promised assistance, the senior regional source suggested that this support was limited to ensuring a safe exit. Given that Assad and his wife are now apparently in Russia, this promise has been kept—at least for now.

The source also provided insights into earlier negotiations on Syria. Proposals for dialogue between the opposition and the government were discussed, with Turkey playing a significant role. Ankara reportedly instructed the opposition to act with restraint, and there was even coordination with the former Syrian prime minister to lead a transitional phase aimed at forming a new state. But none of these efforts really took off, partly due to the reticence of Assad to usher change. In parallel, informed sources in Tehran told Amwaj.media, the Turks allegedly blindsided both Iran and Russia by insisting that movement spotted among rebels in Idlib in recent months was nothing to worry about.

Then there is the role of Iran, the Assad family’s longstanding regional ally. Seeing an armed rebellion take shape amid the Arab Spring protests, the Islamic Republic dispatched its expeditionary Quds Force to save its Syrian partner with blood and great treasure.

Although the tide was turned against Sunni rebels and fighting frozen for the past four years, western sanctions gradually hollowed out the Syrian state. As the government in Damascus turned to large-scale drug trafficking to generate revenue, it became sorely apparent that only petrodollars and political pressure on western capitals from Gulf Arab states would enable a semblance of reconstruction. On this basis, Iran welcomed the pioneering decision by the Emiratis to reopen their embassy in Damascus in late 2018, ending seven years of estrangement. Facilitated by Abu Dhabi, Assad also gradually re-engaged with others who had backed the rebellion against his rule—including Saudi Arabia.

But things took a turn following the Oct. 7, 2023 Palestinian surprise attack on Israeli border communities. As Hezbollah immediately opened a “support front” against Israel following the eruption of the Gaza war, the Emiratis reportedly sought to prod Assad into standing on the sidelines. Barely a week later, the diplomatic mission of Yemen’s Ansarullah movement in Damascus was shuttered, ostensibly as a precondition for Assad’s rapprochement with Saudi Arabia. The distancing from Ansarullah, better known as the Houthis, was particularly pronounced as the group over the past year rose to become a key member of the Axis through its drone and missile attacks on Israel as well as disruption of shipping in the Red Sea.

Meanwhile, as Israel frontally assaulted the Iranian presence—taking out the Quds Force command that helped Assad cling to power, and even razing an Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus—the Syrian government largely kept mum. The same lukewarm approach was apparent in the statement Assad issued following Israel’s killing of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut’s southern suburb earlier this year.

In other words, while Syria’s geography and official state ideology made it central to the Iran-led ‘Axis of Resistance’, Assad was apparently leveraging “non-resistance” to rehabilitate his standing among Arab allies of the US.

So when HTS rolled into Aleppo and Hama without a fight, Iran was in no rush to come to Assad’s aid. The senior regional diplomatic source explained that despite the Syrian government’s urgent request for Iranian support, logistical constraints and operational risks—including potential Israeli airstrikes—made such assistance impractical. This, according to the source, further highlighted Iran’s growing burden in the Syrian crisis, which was no longer tenable. If direct access was to be physically constrained by Israeli air power, mindful of repeated bombings of runways in both Aleppo and Damascus as well as threats against Iranian flights in recent weeks, it ultimately diminished the value of Syria as an ally.

In this context, the Quds Force is said to have established contact with HTS, securing assurances amid the collapse of the Syrian army that Shiite Muslims and Shiite shrines as well as the Iranian embassy would be left untouched. The extent of the involvement of Iran’s diplomatic apparatus in this initiative is unclear. Nonetheless, as Iran’s evacuated embassy was ransacked on Dec. 8, the state broadcaster in Tehran highlighted that the assailants were “not affiliated with the group in charge [of Syria],” alluding to HTS having kept its word.
Snip.
The arc of Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria is long, but became particularly pronounced over the past decade. As the Syrian military was on the verge of defeat in 2013, the Lebanese movement and Iran were equally alarmed. Both saw the threat of Sunni militancy taking root across the region. Nasrallah and then-Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani also passionately charged that Damascus was crucial to the wider “resistance” against Israel, convincing Iran’s leadership that full-scale intervention was a must.

So in the spring of 2013, Hezbollah fighters moved into Al-Qusayr. Situated southwest of Homs, a key node connecting Damascus with the Alawite coastal heartlands, the region was vital to rebel factions which had emerged amid the Arab Spring. Its location near the border with Lebanon allowed them to smuggle in fighters and weapons, putting up stiff resistance against forces loyal to Assad. The battle was bloody, claiming the lives of over 100 members of Iran’s foremost Arab ally. But in the end, Qusayr was returned to Assad’s control, and the battle was later—together with Russia’s military intervention in 2015—chronicled as the turning point in the war against Sunni militants.

A decade later, Qusayr once again held special symbolism as the Syrian army faltered in the face of the blitz led by HTS. With the fall of Aleppo and Hama within the span of days—and apparently without any real fight—Homs was in the spotlight. Without it, Assad would be left with only Damascus, cut off from the coast. Accounts of what happened next are conflicting. Initially, insiders charged that up to 2,000 members of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force were to be deployed for one last stand.

But Hezbollah’s deployment turned out to be far smaller, with commanders quickly concluding that a withdrawal was in order after an operational assessment, Amwaj.media has learned. Shortly afterwards, informed sources explained, a decision was made to evacuate the country through the same route that had been used to enter the Syrian conflict back in 2013. According to a source in the area, soon after the Hezbollah convoy—said to have been made up of dozens of vehicles—crossed the border towards the Hermel district in Lebanon, Israel struck. Hezbollah keeps casualty figures a secret, but the losses from the bombing are said to have been “big.”
America supposedly went after the Iraqi Shiite paramilitaries coming over the border to aid Assad’s forces, and Israel got Hezbollah? Fascinating.
Following the deadly debacle, a well-informed source in Lebanon told Amwaj.media that the decision to enter Homs and then withdraw was taken by a “Lebanese individual” and not upon an Iranian request or leadership decision. If accurate, this account of events raises concern that Hezbollah is no longer as disciplined as before. It also indicates troubling and potentially chaotic times ahead, as Iran and its allies struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.

Assad fell because “he wanted to prove to the west that he is not a warmonger,” an Iranian hardline lawmaker thundered as images emerged of HTS in control of Damascus. What this message may hold, and whether it will emerge as the dominant and coordinated approach of Tehran and allied capitals, remains to be seen.

Iranian Imam shot dead in Kazeroun attack in third such killing since 1979
2024-10-27
[JPost] Sabahi had served as the Imam of Kharameh for ten years before returning to Kazeroun in November 2019.

The Imam of Kazeroun in southern Iran, Mohammad Sabahi, was shot by an attacker who then took his own life after leading the Friday prayers this week, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency.

The Imam suffered from severe wounds and was transported to the Vali Asr hospital for treatment. Mohammad Ali Bekhrad, the special commander of Kazeroun County, confirmed that Imam Sabahi was targeted after the prayers and was undergoing medical treatment.

Several hours later, in a separate report, Tasnim noted he was transferred to the Namazi Hospital in Shiraz for further treatment. However, despite the efforts of the medical team, Sabahi succumbed to his wounds.

"Despite the efforts of the doctors and medical staff at Namazi Hospital in Shiraz, the Friday Imam has passed away due to the severity of his [wounds]," Iranian State Media IRNA cited Kazeroun’s governor, Mohammad Ali Bekhrad.

THIRD KILLING SINCE 1979 REVOLUTION
According to IRNA's report, Sabahi had served as the Imam of Kharameh for ten years before returning to Kazeroun in November 2019, further noting that his death marks the third killing of a Friday Imam in Kazeroun since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

According to IRNA, initial reports concerning the attacker were conflicting, with Telegram channels claiming he was a war veteran. However, Mehdi Mazarei of Kazeroun’s Martyrs Foundation refuted the claim and warned against spreading false information.

Mizan News clarified that the attacker had a criminal background and had previously attempted to harm a judge.

Iran Nuke Scientists Work it Out With a Pencil
2024-10-25
Too late.
[IranWire] Iran's Atomic Energy Organization will implement new security protocols next week and ban specific electronic devices from its facilities and affiliated locations, IranWire has learned.

The restrictions will prohibit entry of certain laptops, tablets, and mobile phones, including devices manufactured by Motorola, Apple, and BlackBerry.

The measure comes amid heightened regional tensions following Israel's stated intention to respond to this month's missile attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, former IRGC commander and current head of its cultural base, has confirmed the credibility of these threats.

The security upgrade appears motivated by concerns over potential espionage and sabotage operations.

Officials have drawn parallels to incidents like Hezbollah's pager explosions, which resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries, including to the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon.

Despite some injured individuals receiving treatment in Iranian hospitals and being visited by officials like President Masoud Pezeshkian, media coverage of these incidents has been limited and controlled.

Iranian media coverage of related security incidents has been notably restricted, especially regarding diplomatic personnel affected by recent events.

The reports confirmed that the Israeli Air Force is on high alert and its aircraft were flying extensively over all occupied Paleostinian territories.

It was also revealed that electricity was cut off in large areas of the settlements of "Beitar Illit" and "Gush Dan" south of Jerusalem, out of fear of a Yemen

Hard landing of a helicopter with the President of Iran: who might benefit from it?

by Gevorg Mirzayan

[REGNUM] On Sunday, May 19, a helicopter carrying three Iranian political leaders, including President Ibrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, made a hard landing in the north of the country, near the border with Azerbaijan.

The incident occurred in a mountainous, inaccessible area. This prevented rescuers from quickly reaching the landing site. In addition, the search is complicated by severe weather conditions and poor visibility - about 5-6 meters. According to a preliminary version, the emergency could have occurred due to fog.

Around 22:30 Moscow time, it became known that experts had established the exact location of the helicopter based on a signal received from the phone of one of the crew members. It is noted that the military immediately headed to the indicated place.

So far there is no exact information about the condition of Raisi and other passengers. However, two questions have already arisen: what was it and what will be the consequences for Iran if the politicians fail to save themselves?

Most experts are inclined to believe that this is an assassination attempt. Moreover, it was carefully planned - it was no coincidence that a number of the country's top leaders ended up in the same helicopter, and it was he, and not the two flying side by side, who made a hard landing.

Also, some observers were quick to link what happened to Raisi with four other recent incidents.

The first is an attempt on the life of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico - he was shot at, the prime minister is in serious condition. The second is the threats received against Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The third is a coup attempt uncovered in Turkey - according to authorities, a number of high-ranking security officials tried to once again overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The fourth is an assassination attempt on the Crown Prince (and de facto ruler) of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. The Kingdom's authorities do not provide any information about the incident, but it is known that terrorists attacked the Crown Prince's motorcade.

The theory of five assassination attempts, of course, has a right to exist - something in common can indeed be found in the incidents. All five leaders have a positive attitude towards Russia and support it - naturally, to the best of their ability. Some help Moscow bypass sanctions, some block anti-Russian initiatives within the European Union, and some actively cooperate with the Russian Ministry of Defense in the field of combat botany and other means of defeating the Ukrainian army.

However, such an associative series still looks like an exaggeration. First of all, because the stories with Fico and Vucic are fundamentally different from what happened with Erdogan, Mohammed bin Salman and Raisi.

An attempt was made on the life of the Slovak Prime Minister, to put it mildly, by an unbalanced person. President Vučić only received threats, which every more or less serious head of state receives in the dozens every day.

But in the other three stories, the real organization of assassination attempts and complex logistics are visible. After all, even an attack on the Saudi crown prince’s motorcade, hidden in a veil of secrecy, cannot be carried out alone, not to mention the formation of a conspiracy among the Turkish security forces or the story of the presidential helicopter in Iran.

And if we pay attention to these three cases, then they are united not only by Russia, but also by the region. Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Iran are the three engineers of the Middle East. They shape the local construction of international relations and the security system. And, given the Saudi-Iranian rapprochement, as well as the radicalization of Turkish foreign policy, their regional design acquired anti-Israeli and anti-American features. And therefore it had to be prevented by any possible means - and Israel is called the main interest in the matter of prevention.

The New York Times writes that recently the United States and Iran reached certain agreements on de-escalating the situation in the Middle East. But Israel, and Prime Minister Netanyahu personally, do not need de-escalation - Tel Aviv does not lose hope of starting the war it needs against Iran with the hands of the Americans.
Not Tel Aviv — Jerusalem. Upon independence in 1948, Israel named West Jerusalem its capitol, annexing East Jerusalem to it following the Six Day War in 1967.
As for the consequences of the possible death of Iran's leaders, opinions differ. Some experts believe that nothing critical will happen for Iran: the vertical of power in the country is working, and the real leader of the country is the Supreme Ayatollah - otherwise known as Rahbar - Ali Khamenei.

Rahbar has already stated that everything is under control.

“We hope that the Almighty will return the respected President Raisi and his companions to the arms of the people. Everyone should pray for their health. The people of Iran should not worry, everything will be fine in the country,” Ali Khamenei assures.

In reality, everything is not so clear. First of all, because Ibrahim Raisi and Hossein Abdollahian are not just cogs in the state machine. Both enjoy enormous authority in society and, most importantly, among the security forces. They have a crystal clear reputation, no trail of corruption. Finally, they have a sharp mind - Abdollahian is called a strong strategist.

In addition, do not forget about the third very important passenger of the helicopter. In addition to Raisi and Abdollahian, the representative of the rahbar in the East Azerbaijan region, Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, was flying. The man who is called the likely successor to 85-year-old Ali Khamenei - that is, the next de facto leader of the country.

Therefore, if someone really planned an assassination attempt, then these people literally intended to behead the Islamic Republic. Of course, if something critically bad happened to Ali Ale-Khash, another successor to Ali Khamenei will be found in the country. But the search process itself could provoke a serious conflict within the Iranian elites. And 85-year-old Ali Khamenei and 97-year-old Ahmad Janati, head of the Council of Experts who will choose the next rahbar, may not be able to pay it off.

Yemen's 'uninhibited' attacks push French warship to exit Red Sea
2024-04-17
[TheCradle] France's Aquitaine-class FREMM frigate Alsace has turned tail from the Red Sea after running out of missiles and munitions repelling attacks from the Yemeni armed forces, according to its commander, Jerome Henry.

"We didn’t necessarily expect this level of threat. There was an uninhibited violence that was quite surprising and very significant. [The Yemenis] do not hesitate to use drones that fly at water level, to explode them on commercial ships, and to fire ballistic missiles," Henry told French news outlet Le Figaro in an exclusive interview published on 11 April.

"We had to carry out at least half a dozen assistances following [Yemeni] strikes," he added.

The commander of the Alsace also revealed that, after a 71-day deployment, all combat equipment was depleted.
What onearth will they do in a real war?
"From the Aster missile to the 7.62 machine gun of the helicopter, including the 12.7mm, 20mm, or 76mm cannon, we dealt with three ballistic missiles and half a dozen drones," Henry adds.

According to the French commander, the Franco—Italian Aster missile — each carrying a price tag of up to $2 million — "was pushed to its limits" by the Yemeni armed forces, as the Alsace had to use it "on targets that we did not necessarily imagine at the start."

Henry added that Sanaa has markedly increased its use of ballistic missiles after relying mainly on suicide drones at the start of the country's pro-Palestine operations in the Red Sea and stressed that the French Navy has not faced such a tough battle since NATO collectively launched its 2011 war on Libya to depose the late ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

"I was there too. It wasn't the same thing. It has been even longer since we have engaged with this level of weaponry and violence. The threat to the boat was much greater in the Red Sea," Henry notes.

The Alsace entered the Red Sea in late January, a few weeks after the US and the UK launched an illegal war on Yemen to protect Israeli shipping interests. The frigate was deployed as part of the EU naval operation Aspides — Greek for shield.

With a mandate initially set for one year, Aspides saw the deployment of several EU warships and airborne early warning systems to the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and surrounding waters. According to authorities in Brussels, the mission is exclusively defensive, and its forces are not taking part in US-led attacks against Yemen.

Aspides came together after several NATO members proved hesitant or outright refused to join the floundering Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG), which a top US commander called one of the largest battles the navy has fought since the end of World War II.

"We favor a diplomatic solution. We know that there is no military solution," US Special Envoy for Yemen Timothy Lenderking said earlier this month, acknowledging the futility of Washington's military strategy against the Arab world's poorest country.

According to Yemeni sources who spoke with The Cradle, US officials recently offered Sanaa "an acknowledgment of its legitimacy" in exchange for its neutrality in the ongoing war on Gaza.

"[Washington] pledged to repair the damages, remove foreign forces from all occupied Yemeni lands and islands, and remove Ansarallah from the State Department’s ’terrorism list’ — as soon as they stop their attacks in support of Gaza," The Cradle columnist Khalil Nasrallah cited the sources as saying.

The offer also includes "severely reducing" the role of the Saudi-appointed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) and "accelerating the signing of a roadmap" with the Saudi-led coalition to end the nine-year war that has decimated Yemen.

Nevertheless, Yemeni officials have maintained that their operations in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean will continue until Israel stops the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

"From the coast of the Red Sea or from outside it, we can achieve the goals we want in defense of our country and support of Palestine... We still have many military surprises, and there are military operations that we are keeping secret as part of a specific media strategy," Mohammad Ali al-Houthi, a senior member of Yemen's Supreme Political Council, announced on 3 April.

Saudi-backed authorities reopen Ma'rib-Sana'a road in major step towards peace in Yemen

[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Member of the Supreme Political Council in Sana’a, Mohammad Ali al-Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
, welcomed the announcement by one of the members of the Presidential Leadership Council loyal to the Saudi-led coalition, Sultan al-Arada, about the re-opening of the Ma’rib-Nihm-Sana’a road.

In a post on his account on the X platform, al-Houthi said that "ending the siege on Sana’a by the US-British-Saudi-Emirati coalition and its allies by announcing the opening of the Ma’rib-Sana’a road is good if it continues and allows the Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
is to cross it in the future."

Al-Houthi expressed his hope that the coalition forces would open the other two crossings, the Ma’rib-Serwah-Sana’a and Ma’rib-Bayda roads.

He also called for lifting the siege on the rest of the roads in all provinces, removing the militarisation of the roads, and releasing those kidnapped from the roads who were arrested during transit while traveling during the past years.

In February 2020, Mohammad Ali al-Houthi announced Sana’a’s readiness to open the Sana’a-Ma’rib road via Nihm District, but this announcement did not receive a response at the time from the coalition forces.

The Ma’rib-Nihm-Sana’a road had been shut down by the Saudi invaders and their allies ever since 2015, as part of the blockade against the Yemeni capital of Sana’a. The reopening of the road for the first time in almost nine years marks a major de-escalation and major stride towards possible peace.

[GEO.TV] Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir said Monday that enemies of Pakistain were hell-bent towards creating fissures using religious, ethnic, and political vulnerabilities.

In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the army chief made the remarks while addressing a ceremony held at Christ Church in Rawalpindi in connection with Christmas celebrations.

The congregation welcomed the COAS and thanked him for sharing the festivity. Gen Munir wished Merry Christmas to the entire Christian community in the country.

The army chief expressed reverence for the religious community and stressed the need to promote greater interfaith harmony in society in order to follow Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s true vision of a united and progressive Pakistain, said ISPR.

The COAS noted: "Islam teaches us the lesson of peace, friendship and encourages interfaith harmony which is the need of the hour."

He stressed the importance of having correct perspective, truth, and knowledge-based opinions about national issues rather than following rhetoric and propaganda, to address complex challenges and issues.

"Enemies of Pakistain are hell-bent towards creating fissures using religious, ethnic and political vulnerabilities. We have to stand together [and] united to rise as a resolute and strong nation."
