Poll Worker Who Voted Multiple Times For Obama For Family Members Released Early From Prison
2014-03-13 | |
[CBS/AP] A former Ohio poll worker sentenced to five years in prison for voting illegally on behalf of other people has been released from prison after less than a year behind bars. Melowese Richardson of Madisonville was released Tuesday after her attorney says she gave him permission to reveal that she has bipolar disorder. ![]() Her attorney, David Singleton, shared Richardson's medical records with Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters. After reviewing the case, Deters asked Judge Robert Ruehlman to allow Richardson to be released. "In the interest of justice, it is time for her to go home," Deters said, according to WCPO-TV.
Singleton said justice was served with Richardson's early release. "Justice was done in this case today,"Singleton told WXIX-TV. "We are grateful to Prosecuting Attorney Joe Deters for stepping up to ask the judge to release Melowese in light of the new information. We are thankful to Judge Ruehlman for revisiting his sentence and placing Ms. Richardson on probation." The 59-year-old Richardson previously told a TV station that she had voted multiple times for President Barack Obama on behalf of herself and family members. She had said she had no intent to commit voter fraud. Melowese, on displacing a roller, Discovered bats in her cupola: "Since I voted in droves For the fishes and loaves, I'm relieved that I'm only bipolar!"

Cincinnati Poll Worker Gets 5-Year Prison Term For Illegal Voting
2013-07-18 | ||||||
![]() "This is not a little thing. It's not a minor thing. This is what our country's based on -- free elections," Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Ruehlman told Richardson. In a case watched around the country, Richardson was a Hamilton County poll worker from 1998 until her arrest earlier this year when she was charged with eight counts of illegal voting. In May, she accepted a plea deal and was convicted of four counts in exchange for the other four being dismissed. She was convicted of voting twice in the 2012 election and voting three times -- in 2008, 2011 and 2012 -- for her sister, Montez Richardson, who has been in a coma since 2003. Richardson told the judge she was bothered that Amy Searcy, the Board of Elections director, had criticized her moments before the sentencing. Richardson, 58, of Madisonville, said for years she helped register Democrats to vote
"I think the board has shown me nothing but total disrespect for the 30 years I've served them," she told the judge. "I believe in the system and I've done nothing to harm the system
"It has nothing to do with race. It has nothing to do with politics. It has nothing to do with disrespecting you. You did this to yourself," Ruehlman told her. "You're very selfish, self-centered. I really believe President B.O., if he were asked about this today, he would be appalled. He would not want anybody to cheat to get elected."
The judge noted Richardson deserved a prison sentence, which was one year less than the maximum possible, because she has a lengthy criminal record, schemed repeatedly over five years to cast several illegal votes and used her training and expertise as a poll worker to try to evade detection. Richardson previously was convicted of threatening to kill a witness in a criminal case against her brother, of stealing, of drunken driving and of beating someone in a bar fight.
As a poll worker, "her job is actually to protect the integrity and sanctity of the voting system," Anderson said. "(She) is an ideologue who was hell bent on stuffing the ballot box with as many Obama votes as possible."
Tim Burke wasn't surprised. Burke, chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, had no sympathy for Richardson. "It's very sad how she doesn't understand how she abused the trust that was placed in her as a poll worker," Burke said. "She frankly embarrassed the board and, in the process, all of us who trust in the system." Three others -- Margaret I. Allen, 64, formerly of Loveland; Ernestine Strickland, 84, of Memphis, Tenn.; and Andre Wilson, 49, of Winton Hills -- have illegal voting cases pending.

Hamilton Cty: Three More Charged With Voter Fraud In Presidential Election
2013-05-08 | ||
![]() Margaret Allen, 64, Ernestine Strickland, 84, and Andre Wilson, 49, were indicted Tuesday on one count of felony illegal voting. If convicted, they face up to 18 months in prison. Allen is charged with attempting to vote in the 2012 Ohio general election by requesting an absentee voter ballot despite being a resident of Florida. She hasn't lived in Ohio since 2009, according to the Hamilton County prosecutor's office. Strickland is charged with registering to vote and voting by absentee voter ballot in the 2012 Ohio general election even though she is a resident of Tennessee and has never lived in Ohio. Wilson is charged with registering to vote and voting by absentee voter ballot in the 2012 Ohio general election by using a fictitious Ohio address. "Our democracy is built on our lawful right to vote," Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said. "Everyone's vote is weakened when some people decide to disobey the law. "We must be vigilant in protecting everyone's right to vote," Deters added. The charges come as the Hamilton County Elections Board continues to investigate voter anomalies in the 2012 presidential election. There is disagreement among board members about whether all voter anomalies should be referred to the prosecutor's office for investigation. A decision on that matter is pending. In the meantime, the board had sent seven cases where it suspected fraud to the prosecutor for review, according to Board of Elections records. Tuesday's indictment's are in addition to three previous indictments related to voter fraud in the same election. Marguerite Kloos, a 54-year-old nun from Delhi Township,

Cincinnati Nun Pleads Guilty To Voter Fraud; Escapes Prison

![]() Kloos, 54, of Delhi Township, pleaded guilty to illegal voting, admitting to filling out and filing an absentee ballot for Sister Rose Marie Hewitt, Kloos' friend who died before last November's election. In a brief hearing before Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Winkler, Kloos pleaded guilty as charged but was sentenced to the diversion program. If she stays out of trouble, usually for a year, her record will be erased and legally it will be as if it never happened. As part of that agreement, she also has to report to authorities periodically and perform community service. The charge carried a maximum prison sentence of 18 months. Hewitt requested an absentee ballot from the Board of Elections in September. It was mailed to her Oct. 4, the day she died. "When the absentee ballot was received at Ms. Hewitt's address, (Kloos) opened the envelope, forged Ms. Hewitt's signature, voted Ms. Hewitt's ballot, and mailed the ballot back to the Board of Elections," a court document notes. After the allegation was made public, Kloos resigned as The College of Mount St. Joseph's Dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities,
