ISIS Top Dawg, 13 others pining for the fjords in Nangarhar
2016-07-12
A commander leading the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group was killed during an operation in eastern Nangarhar province.

According to the defense sources, the ISIS commander was identified as Meera Jan and was killed together with his 13 fighters.

The sources further added that the operation was conducted in Kot district of Nangarhar province where the loyalists of the terror group are actively operating.

At least 5 others were also wounded and various types of heavy and light weapons were destroyed during the operations.

The loyalists of the terror group based in Afghanistan have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as local officials earlier said at least 31 loyalists of the terror group were killed during the ongoing operations in Nangarhar province.

The Afghan forces are regularly targeting the loyalists of ISIS terrorist group to curb their insurgency activities as they attempt to expand operations in Afghanistan.

The US Forces in Afghanistan are also targeting the loyalists of the terror by conducting airstrikes.

The US forces stepped up airstrikes against the ISIS loyalists earlier this year after they were granted more authorities by President Barack Obama.

The increased raids against ISIS loyalists followed amid concerns that they are attempting to expand foothold in the country besides attempting to consolidate operations with the terror group in Iraq and Syria.

Bail plea of would-be bomber dismissed
2011-08-10
[Dawn] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday dismissed the post-arrest bail petition of a would-be jacket wallah.

The Margalla police said they incarcerated Meera Jan on June 26, 2011, near Bloody Karachi Company bus stand and recovered an explosive jacket, hand grenade, a 30-bore pistol and six bullets from his possession. Meera Jan is currently confined in Central Jail Adiala.

The single bench of IHC Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman in its order observed: "Incidents of terrorism have increased in the country and innocent people are being deprived of their lives; the same must be dealt with an iron hand."

It said: "Overwhelming incrementing material is available on record to connect the petitioner with the commission of offence. Prima facie, the petitioner is involved in offence against the society, which is a heinous offence."

According to the court order, Meera Jan was involved in an offence which is punishable with life imprisonment and in such cases grant of bail is an exception while the petitioner`s counsel has failed to highlight any exception.

Chaudhry Nisar Ahmed Gujjar, the petitioner`s counsel, informed the court that his client was absolutely innocent and had been roped in the case by Islamabad police in order to show their fake efficiency.

He contended that the petitioner had become a victim of family rivalry and the Margalla police on the instigation of the opponents of the petitioner had implicated him in a false case. "Nothing was recovered from the possession of the petitioner and he has no concern with the suicide jacket," he added.

Deputy Attorney General Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri contended that Meera Jan was incarcerated with other co-accused.

He opposed the grant of bail to the accused and requested the court to dismiss the petition. On July 28, Additional Sessions Judge Islamabad Syed Wajahat Hussain had also dismissed the post-arrest bail petition of the accused.

in the city last month.

The arrest also led to the recovery of a ready-to-blow explosive jacket, a hand grenade and a pistol from their possession.

The suspects were identified as Munawar alias Meera Jan and Mohibullah, both residents of Fata.

On a tip-off that the suspects were present at the Bloody Karachi Company bus terminal, the Margalla police swooped on them.

The police said the suicide jacket, hand grenade and pistol were recovered from a bag which the suspects were carrying. The bomb disposal squad was called to the spot which defused the explosives, said the police.

During preliminary investigation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the foiled terrorist attempt at Pakistain Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) during the president`s possible visit to the hospital to see his father in May, the police claimed, adding they also confessed to their involvement in a planned terrorist activity at the district courts in F-8.

On June 4, security agencies picked up eight alleged Orcs and similar vermin for their involvement in the foiled plot to assassinate the president.

The arrest was made after security agencies intercepted a telephone call in which two persons had talked about the presence of a jacket wallah at Pims on May 15.

Afghanistan
Two suspected Taliban killed in Helmand clash
2007-03-13
NATO and Afghan troops clashed with suspected Taliban insurgents on Monday in southern Afghanistan, shortly before calling in an airstrike on a compound that left two militants dead, a spokesman said. The clash started when militants opened fired and lobbed mortars toward NATO and Afghan troops in the Gereshk district of Helmand province, said Squadron Leader Dave Marsh, a spokesman for NATO’s International Security Assistance Force. Two Afghans and one NATO soldier were lightly wounded in the clash, Marsh said.

A tribal leader said that western forces killed five Afghan civilians in the airstrike in Helmand. The elder, Meera Jan, said civilian houses were hit in the attack. As well as the five people killed, four were wounded, he said. A spokeswoman for NATO troops in Afghanistan said an airstrike had been carried out in the Gereshk district of Helmand province late on Sunday but NATO forces were not involved. A spokesman for a separate US-led force said he had no information about any air strike.

Meanwhile, during a search operation in neighbouring Kandahar province, Afghan troops arrested a “high-ranking suicide attack coordinator” in Panjwayi district, the ISAF said on Monday. An ISAF statement said that Mullah Mohammad Wali organised suicide attacks in Kandahar and worked for the Taliban.

Separately, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said on Monday New Zealand would extend its military commitment in Afghanistan to September 2008. New Zealand has had 120 soldiers serving in a provincial reconstruction team in Bamiyan province for 3-1/2 years and their term would be extended for another year, Clark said. “The objective is to ensure that Afghanistan does not revert to being a failed state and again become a haven for terrorists,” Clark said in a statement.

Defence Minister Phil Goff told a press conference the security situation in Bamiyan province was less dangerous than other areas in the country. Under the commitment, New Zealand will also supply a small number of soldiers to help train the Afghan National Army, work at the International Security Assistance Force headquarters and work in a medical unit at Kandahar. A New Zealand frigate will be deployed to the Arabian Gulf in the middle of next year as part of a multi-national maritime security force and four police will also help train local police in Afghanistan.

German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Monday that Germany would not bow to terrorist threats demanding the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan. “We will not be blackmailed,” Schaeuble told RBB radio. He added, however, that the government took seriously threats made at the weekend by two Islamist groups to attack Germany and to execute two German hostages being held in Iraq unless Berlin ended its Afghanistan mission. “We are part of a global target. We should have no illusions that we are as much under threat as Spain, England or other nations,” Schaeuble told RBB.

He said German soldiers were also contributing “to our own security” by helping to stabilise Afghanistan. Germany has almost 3,000 troops in northern Afghanistan, where it commands the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
