Malala urges world to hold Taliban accountable for ''apartheid against women'' |
2025-01-13 |
[GEO.TV] Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai![]() has called on the international community to tackle the global crisis of girls' education, emphasising the vital role educated women play in building a thriving society. "We should begin by recognising what we are up against, a crisis that holds our economy back by hundreds of billions in lost growth, a crisis harming the health, safety and security of our people," Malala said while speaking on the second day of "International Conference on Girls' Education in Moslem Communities: Challenges and Opportunities" on Sunday. The federal capital hosted the two-day conference that brought together global experts, educators to address issues surrounding girls' education in Moslem countries. Pakistain faces its own severe education crisis, with more than 22 million children out of school, according to government figures, one of the highest numbers in the world. Malala stressed "if we don't tackle this crisis, our society will not thrive as it should". "We will fail to live up to Islam's fundamental values of seeking knowledge." This conference, she said, is an encouraging first step. "But we can only have an honest and serious conversation about girls' educations, if we call out the worst violations of it." The event was snubbed by Afghanistan's Taliban ![]() students... government, as Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui told AFP that Islamabad had extended an invitation to Kabul, "but no one from the Afghan government was at the conference". Since returning to power in 2021, the Afghan Taliban government has imposed an austere version of religious law that the United Nations ...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks... has called "gender apartheid". Their curbs have shut women and girls out of secondary school and university education, as well as many government jobs, and seen them sequestered out of many aspects of public life. Muhammad Al Issa, a Saudi holy man and secretary general of the Moslem World League — which has backed the summit — said "religion is no grounds for blocking girls from school". Meanwhile, ...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout Montefiore's foot was still stuck and the hound had completely soaked his uniform with slobber... Pakistain is facing its own severe education crisis, with more than 22 million children out of school, according to government figures, one of the highest numbers in the world. |

India hijab row: 'All I want to do is study' |
2022-02-12 |
[DW] Muskan Khan, a college student in Karnataka state, told DW that she is not afraid of the Hindu right-wing activists who want to enforce a veil ban in educational institutes. The row has now spread across the country. Huge protests have erupted across Karnataka state following the government's decision to ban hijabs, or headscarves, in schools and colleges. After six students were banned from entering a college in Karnataka's coastal Udupi district for wearing hijabs on January 1, the debate over the rights of Moslem women, pluralism and secularism has gripped the entire country. Amid escalating communal tensions and sporadic violence, authorities have closed all high schools and colleges in the southern state for three days. The Karnataka state is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which many Moslems accuse of deviating from the country's secular ideology. The state's High Court is hearing two petitions on the issue and will decide whether to keep the ban or discard it. One of the petitions argues that it is a citizen's fundamental right to choose the attire, and that is guaranteed by the country's constitution. The other petition challenges the legality of the government's decision to enforce a dress code in educational institutes. School uniforms are an inheritance from Britain, which is why fancy private schools in America have them, too. The whole point is to dictate what the students wear. DW contacted several ruling party officials, who said they didn't want to comment as the matter is now in court.The hijab row, however, was echoed in the national Parliament, with opposition parties staging a walkout. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, who is a politician from Karnataka, told news hounds that "all students must follow the dress code prescribed by schools and their administration." AN UNLIKELY 'HERO' The issue became more prominent when a video of a college student became viral on social media. It showed Muskan Khan, a second-year student of Mandya College, being heckled by Hindu right-wing activists. They were purportedly supporting the dress code in the college. Khan, a Moslem girl clad in a burqa (face veil), confronted them and shouted "Allah Akbar" (God is great in Arabic). She refused to remove her veil. Not secular on the Muslim side, then, but the soft jihad of the law. Khan is now being hailed by many Indian Moslems as a "hero" who stood for the rights of minorities.Not minorities in general, though. Just soft-jihading Moslems who probably, when investigated, will turn out to have connections to others involved with the hard jihad of the sword. "They were not allowing me to enter college because I was wearing the burqa. They started shouting Jai Shri Rama (Hail Lord Rama), so I started yelling Allah Akbar," Muskan told DW over the phone from Mandya."All I want to do is study, and these people are stopping us. But I am not afraid," she added. 'OBJECTIFICATION OF WOMEN' Supporters of the ban argue that it is the right of college authorities to decide what kind of attire the students are allowed to wear. But many Moslems, and India's secular sections, counter it by saying that it is every individual's basic right to exercise religious beliefs. "The hijab is a part of cultural and religious identity of the Moslem women. It is like mangal sutra (necklace) for Hindus, the cross for Christians, and turbans for Sikhs," T N Prathapan, a politician from the opposition Congress party, told DW. Prathapan said the constitutional rights of all citizens must be protected. Meanwhile, ...back at the hanging, Butch continued with his last words, trying not to repeat himself too often...... Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai ![]() called on Indian authorities to take measures to "stop the marginalization of Moslem women." "Refusing to let girls go to school in their hijabs is horrifying. The objectification of women persists, for wearing less or more," Yousafzai tweeted. A bold choice for a young woman who was shot in the head for not being a proper Moslem maiden. POLITICAL MILEAGESome experts say the BJP is deliberately igniting the issue for political gains. "What to eat and what to wear is a fundamental right. The BJP is trying to impose its choices on people. This is nothing but majoritarian politics at play," Nawab Malik of the Nationalist Congress Party told DW. Activists say attacks on Moslems, who number about 200 million of India's 1.4 billion population, have increased since Modi took power in 2014. Communal tensions are also on the rise in Karnataka, a state ruled by the BJP. According to the Karnataka Communal Harmony Forum, the state's coastal districts witnessed over 120 communal incidents last year, the highest number in the last four years. A recent report by the joint initiative of the United Christians Forum, the Association for Protection of Civil Rights and United Against Hate revealed that at least 305 incidents of violence against Christians took place nationwide in the first nine months of 2021. This includes at least 32 incidents in Karnataka alone. Cynthia Stephen, a social policy researcher in Karnataka, said the BJP "could have nipped the issue in the bud" much earlier. Kavita Krishnan, of the All India Women's Progressive Association, told DW that the headscarf issue could easily be used as a justification for mob attacks on Moslems. "Hijab is only the latest pretext to target Moslem women. It came after Hindu supremacists held multiple online auctions of Moslem women and made speeches calling for their sexual and reproductive enslavement," Krishnan said. |

Man arrested for faking online sale of Indian Muslim women | ||
2022-01-05 | ||
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Police in India have arrested a man alleged to be behind the offering for sale of prominent Moslem women through a fake online auction, according to government officials, in a case that has sparked anger and outrage across the country. Satej Patil, the technology minister for the Maharashtra state, said late Monday that the cyber unit of the Mumbai Police has detained a 21-year-old engineering student from the southern city of Bengaluru in the neighboring Karnataka state and started the paperwork but haven't done much else against him. Police did not reveal the identity of the suspect, and it wasn’t clear whether the man had made the auction website. Photographs of more than 100 prominent Indian Moslem women, including journalists, activists, film stars and artists, were displayed last weekend without their permission on a website and put up for fake auction. The women listed on the website also included a 65-year-old mother of a disappeared Indian student and Pak Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai ![]() The website, which was taken down within 24 hours, was called "Bulli Bai," a derogatory slang for Indian Moslems. Though there was no real sale involved, the Moslem women listed on the website said the auction was intended to humiliate them, many of whom have been vocal about rising Hindu nationalism in India and some of the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The website was hosted on GitHub, a the Socialist paradise of San Francisco ...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964... -based coding platform. A company spokesperson said GitHub had taken down the user account which had hosted the website on its platform, and that it would cooperate with investigating authorities. The fake auction unleashed outrage on Twitter after complaints from the victims, with several women posting screenshots after finding their photos listed on the website. Women rights groups and politicians from opposition parties urged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to take action against the online harassment of Moslem women, prompting India’s technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to promise strict measures. Police in at least three states said they have opened investigations into the incident and filed criminal complaints against developers of the website, based on the complaints of the targeted women. This was not the first time Moslem women were listed on a fake auction website. Last year in June, a similar website called "Sulli Deals," also a derogatory slang for Moslem women, was created for the same purpose. That website remained online for weeks and was only taken down by authorities after complaints from victims. Police opened an investigation into that case, but no one was arrested or detained. The Mumbai Police has arrested engineering student Vishal Jha in connection with the Bulli Bhai app case The Mumbai Police had picked up Jha on Monday from Bengaluru in connection with the case relating to the auction of Moslem women on the social media. The formal arrest was made today after he was detained by the Mumbai Police on Monday. Jha is currently being questioned by the police. The police said that the arrested student is a co-accused in the matter and was in touch with the main accused in the case. The police has also detained another individual in connection with case and is being questioned. The police said a woman from Uttarakhand suspected to be the main accused has also been detained. The woman is also being questioned now.

Security Forces Gun Down 3 Terrorists in an Encounter in North Waziristan: ISPR |
2021-02-18 |
[DailyTimes.pk] During an intelligence based operation (IBO), security forces killed 3 Lions of Islam from the Aleem Khan Khushali group. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) the encounter took place in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s North ![]() "These Lions of Islam were involved in murder, kidnapping for ransom, extortion, fire raid on security forces and improvised bomb (IED) explosions," ISPR added. "Sanitisation of the area was carried out." As told by military’s media wing the operation was carried out after the security forces noticed the presence of Lions of Islam in a compound in North Waziristan’s area Mir Ali. The ISPR said that 42-year-old resident of Chitral Naib Subedar Aminullah and a 24-year-old resident of Landi Kotal Sepoy Sher Zamin embraced martyrdom and four other security personnel received injuries during the operation. Previously two bad boyz were potted on 18th January during an IBO in Nargosa area of South Waziristan The military’s media wing further added to the previous operation that "During an intense fire, two Lions of Islam Usman Ali and Waheed Lashtai were killed and one was injured and apprehended". Related from January 6: Waziristan Militant Leader Aleem Khan Ustad Joins Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan[Defence.pk] On December 15, Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud, the emir of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), appeared in a video released by Umar Media, the official media arm of TTP (Umar Media, December 15). This video demonstrated a continuation of the series of mergers of Pakistani jihadist groups into TTP, which started in July 2020. The video contains footage of the bay’ah (oath of allegiance) ceremonies of two jihadist organizations from Waziristan, Pakistan, including Mulawi Aleem Khan Ustad, and Commander Umar Azzam groups. Khan is a powerful jihadist commander who joined TTP with nine commanders and dozens of fighters (Tribal News, November 28). TTP announced the mergers of both groups into its ranks on November 27 (Umar Media, November 27). The video shows that the merger ceremony apparently took place outside Afghanistan, most probably in Waziristan’s remote areas bordering the country. The footages include video clips of both commanders’ oath-taking, holding Mahsud’s hands and announcing their pledges of allegiance to him. WHO IS MULAWI ALEEM KHAN USTAD? Aleem Khan is from the tribal North Waziristan district, in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which served as the base of al-Qaeda for more than a decade after 9/11, from 2004 to 2015 (Asia Times, November 5). Khan was deputy to Hafiz Gul Bahadur—the al-Qaeda host and shadow governor of Waziristan (Gandhara, March 16, 2015). The Gul Bahadur group became the largest local group in Waziristan between 2008 and 2014 and even hosted TTP in North Waziristan after the organization lost its strongholds in neighboring South Waziristan. Gul Bahadur’s decline started after the 2014 military operation in North Waziristan, when the jihadists escaping that military operation sought shelter in Afghanistan. [1] Khan disassociated from Bahadur that same year and since then has operated independently (The News, August 20, 2014). During this period, serious differences emerged that would divide Khan and Bahadur, resulting in the latter ultimately seeking leadership of the group (The News, August 20, 2014). Bahadur alleged that Khan was in league with the Pakistani government, and in return was receiving protection for his areas and tribesmen from military operations. As a reaction to this accusation, Khan announced that he was now emir of the group, removing Bahadur, who had moved to the Afghanistan side of the border to escape military operations. A few months later, Aleem Khan somewhat confirmed what Bahadur had accused him of when he surprisingly announced an end to the war against the Pakistani Army, and offered his group’s assistance in returning the internally displaced people (IDPs) of North Waziristan back to their homes. Like thousands of others from North Waziristan, these IDPs had left their homes due to the military operations that took place in 2014. His group had taken responsibility for restoring peace in North Waziristan and threatened military operations against all those aiming to engage in an insurgency against the state (Daily Pakistan, March 16 2015). Thus, the merger of the Aleem Khan group into TTP is important from two perspectives. First, it is a major blow to the Pakistani Army’s efforts to coopt the anti-state militants in Waziristan for peace and the restoration of government authority in the area (Gandahara, July 24 2018). Second, Khan’s bay’ah to TTP is the first time that a jihadist group from North Waziristan is joining the organization. It is particularly signicant that Khan’s group is a strong splinter of the Gul Bahadur organization. The TTP and the Gul Bahadur group share a history of rivalry rooted in the tribal politics of the region. The senior leadership of al-Qaeda, particularly its Afghanistan-Pakistan chief, Mustafa Abu Yazid, tried to unify the TTP and Bahadur group, but the latter did not accept it for long [2]. Gul Bahadur’s rejection has roots in the historical tribal feuds between Mehsuds and Wazir tribes of Waziristan. The Wazirs considers themselves superior to Mehsuds [3]. Thus, Gul Bahadur, being the strongest leader of the Wazir tribes, never agreed to merge into TTP, which was led by the Mehsuds.
