Muslim groups seek to co-opt Ferguson protests |
2014-11-19 |
h/t Gates of Vienna Muslim groups have stepped up efforts to co-opt protests over the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., with a drive to equate the teen’s death to the death of a radical Islamist shot during an FBI raid in 2009, a Washington-based security watchdog group is warning. Using social media, conference calling and traditional outreach methods, leaders of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) are portraying Brown and Detroit mosque leader Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah as African-American victims of police targeting, according to the Washington-based Center for Security Policy (CSP). In a conference call organized by CAIR-linked "Muslims for Ferguson, a CAIR official called Abdullah a “Shaheed,” or martyr, and said both he and Brown were victims of a national security apparatus that had “completely gone wild” and engaged in “demonizing and criminalizing Muslims.” |

Detroit Imam Autopsy Shows 21 GSW's -- Outrage Ensues |
2010-02-01 |
Dearborn An autopsy released today found that Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah died from 21 bullet wounds during an FBI raid in October of a Dearborn warehouse. The autopsy, released at noon by Wayne County Medical Examiner Dr. Carl Schmidt, concluded the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner was homicide. The long-awaited autopsy comes amid calls for an independent investigation into the Oct. 28 shooting. FBI agents have said they were justified in shooting Abdulla because he had opened fire on the agents during a raid on a stolen-goods operation. An FBI dog was killed, prompting agents to return fire. Expect more huffing and puffing by community activists, anything to obscure the answer to the only important question, "Was the shooting justifiable?" If so, how many bullets were fired is not material, but IANAL. |

Islamic Radicalization U.S.A. |
2009-12-24 |
by Ryan Mauro If a major homegrown terrorist attack happens on U.S. soil in the coming years, 2009 will be looked at as the year when the warning signs were missed. According to the Rand Corporation, the U.S. has experienced 30 homegrown terrorism plots since 9/11. One-third of these occurred in 2009; a frightening spike that warrants more attention than it is currently being given by public officials. The Obama Administration began its term by refusing to include terms like "radical Islam" as part of its lexicon. The Global War on Terrorism was alternatively called an "overseas contingency operation" or "a campaign against extremists who wish to do us harm." The Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, described terrorism as a "man-caused disaster. When asked about not even mentioning the word "terrorism" in her first address to Congress, she said, "That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear towards a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur." The homegrown terrorist activity this year has startled the Obama Administration, which now is forced to privately conclude that the radicalization of American-Muslims is increasing. In today's 30-second news culture, shocking incidents such as these quickly fade away as the topic of coverage as other news develops. A summary of some of the biggest incidents this year is needed for the American people to understand how much activity took place: * In May, authorities broke up a plot by four prison converts to bomb two synagogues in the Bronx and fire Stinger missiles at aircraft flying around the Air National Guard base in Newburgh , New York . * On June 1, a Muslim convert shot up a military recruiting center in Arkansas, killing one soldier and wounding another. The attacker, Abdulhakim Muhammad, was previously jailed in Yemen for traveling on a fraudulent Somali passport. Robert Spencer of JihadWatch.org reported that a "well-placed source" informed him that he had gone to Yemen to try to study under a radical cleric named Yahya Hajoori. * In July, seven Muslims were arrested in North Carolina for training with high-powered weapons in preparation to join a jihad overseas. The leader of the group, Daniel Patrick Boyd, had previously trained in guerilla camps in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and enlisted his two sons in his plans. * In September, FBI and local law enforcement raided two apartments owned by Afghans in New York after the occupants were visited by Najibullah Zazi, a suspected terrorist who had traveled to an Al-Qaeda training camp last year. Nine backpacks and cell phones were confiscated, and Zazi was found to have purchased chemicals similar to those used in the 2005 London subway bombings, causing concern that the suspects were planning an attack styled after that operation. * Also in September, FBI sting operations led to the arrest of two desiring to carry out acts of terror. A Jordanian named Michael Finton, an admirer of the "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh, was arrested for planning to set off car bombs outside of a courthouse in Illinois and a skyscraper in Texas . Hosam Maher Husein Smadi was arrested in Texas after trying to detonate a decoy car bomb underneath an office tower. * In October, the FBI tried to arrest a radical imam in Detroit connected to a range of criminal activity. When they arrived at a warehouse to get Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah, he responded with gunfire, killing one of the FBI's dogs before he was shot and killed. Six of his associates were arrested. In the same month, Tarek Mehanna was arrested in Boston for planning to attack a shopping mall and assassinate two public officials. * The next month, Nidal Malik Hassan carried out the horrific shooting at Fort Hood , killing 13 people. He is now known to have previously expressed his support for suicide bombers and to have communicated with Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical imam in Yemen who has acted as a recruiter for Al-Qaeda and praised Hassan's shooting. To this day, President Obama and senior officials have not publicly described the incident as terrorism. * Most recently, five Americans were arrested in Pakistan on their way to link up with the Al-Qaeda and Taliban. They were arrested at the home of a member of the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist group, who is the uncle to one of the suspects. These are only some of the major incidents related to radical Islamic activity in the U.S. that occurred this year. A total of 14 Somali-Americans from Minnesota have been indicted for helping to recruit fellow members of their community to join the Al-Shabaab terrorist group fighting for control of Somalia . The case of Rifqa Bary received considerable attention, as did the honor killing in Arizona of a daughter by her father for being "too Westernized." The Christian Action Network, where I serve as a national security researcher, released the "Homegrown Jihad" documentary in February about the isolated communities in the U.S. run by a radical Islamic group used as paramilitary training and recruitment centers. A new tape provided to me as part of CAN's investigation into the group called "Muslims of the Americas " shows female recruits of the organization receiving such training at their headquarters in New York called "Islamberg." The media is failing to compile all these events and see the frightening increase that the Obama Administration is now admitting exists. When the problem is mentioned, the ideological component is not discussed or is misunderstood. On December 12, Kimberly Dozier reported on the Obama Administration's realization regarding the problem on CBS Evening News, but attributed the rise in homegrown terrorism to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan , saying they were "portrayed by the militants as America 's war on Islam." Dozier also said that "Muslim community leaders here say young people are also being driven to extremes by post-9/11 anti-Muslim propaganda" and cited the Council on American-Islamic Relations as saying that civil rights complaints by Muslims have increased by ten percent in 2009, attempting to draw a connection between bigotry against Muslims and homegrown terrorism. If Dozier had done her research on her source, she would have found that the view of the War on Terror as a war on Islam that she says is causing the increase in homegrown terrorism is actually promoted by CAIR. 2009 should put to rest the idea that any homegrown terrorist plot is an isolated incident. The participants in these plots might not be operationally connected, but a political-religious ideology binds them together. The fight for the home front continues into 2010. |

Detroit Imam says Abdullah killing 'pre-arranged'
2009-11-02 | |
![]() Over one thousand American Muslims gathered in the city of Detroit on Sunday to mourn the prayers leader. The service was held for Luqman Ameen Abdullah, Imam of the Masjid Al-Haqq after FBI agents shot him dead while trying to arrest him. The FBI charged Abdullah of being "the radical leader of a Sunni Islam group in Detroit who expressed hatred for government and endorsed violence." This is while his family, friends, and followers reject the charges with his mosque saying that the claim is "utterly preposterous". Abdullah's son says his murder was barbaric as police shot him several times. The FBI has said Imam Luqman resisted arrest and shot the police dog before being shot and killed. Speaking to Press TV on Sunday, Friday prayer leader of Masjid al-Islam Imam Abdul-Ali Musa said he had access to documents, which could prove that the killing was a pre-arranged scenario.
"Source number one [an informant] testifies that on many occasions he heard luqman Abdullah preaching that Islam should be spread through violent jihad and advocated violence against the government and against law enforcement," Imam Musa read from the indictment. "Abdullah told his followers that if the police was to take his weapon or tried to apprehend him, he will respond with violence and they will have to shoot him before they can arrest him," he added. Imam Musa described his killing as "an assassination by the federal government" adding that "this is to intimidate the Muslim community." "Muslims in America are under a lot of pressure...the Muslim centers, the community centers are full of government infiltrators, spies and saboteurs who try to break the back of this wonderful Islamic movement in North America," he explained. Meanwhile, the American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights and Elections (AMT), a coalition of major national Islamic organizations, has called for an independent investigation into the incident. The coalition has also called on the FBI to refrain from linking the raid or the allegations against the suspects to the Muslim faith.

Detroit Muslims hold memorial for slain Imam |
2009-11-01 |
Muslims in the city of Detroit are preparing for the funeral of a prayers leader killed during an alleged shootout with federal agents. A service for Luqman Ameen Abdullah, Imam of the Masjid Al-Haqq, has been set for Saturday morning at the Muslim Center in Detroit during which speakers will discuss pursuing "peace and reconciliation." Abdullah was killed by the FBI on Wednesday in Detroit during raids in which a number of individuals were arrested on charges unrelated to terrorism. According to a criminal complaint, the Imam had been accused of citing stories from the Quran and the life of the prophet Muhammad to justify "stealing, robbing and other illegal acts, as long as they profit Islam." The FBI accused him of being "the radical leader of a Sunni Islam group in Detroit who expressed hatred for government and endorsed violence." The claims have been dismissed as "utterly preposterous" by Abdullah's mosque. The American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights and Elections (AMT), a coalition of major national Islamic organizations, has called for an independent investigation into the killing. The coalition has also called on the FBI to refrain from linking the raids or the allegations against the suspects to the Muslim faith. "Unless the FBI has evidence linking the criminal allegations to the religious affiliation of the suspects, we ask that federal authorities stop injecting religion into this case," it said in a statement. "The unjustified linkage of this case to the faith Islam," the coalition added, "will only serve to promote an increase in existing anti-Muslim stereotyping and bias in our society." |

Two alleged Islamist radicals arrested in Windsor
2009-11-01 | |||
![]() According to the RCMP, officers arrested Mohammad Al-Sahli, 33, and Yassir Ali Kahn, 30, at residences in Windsor early Saturday morning. It is unclear if the men were arrested in their own homes.
Al-Sahli and Kahn were the last of 11 men listed in an FBI criminal complaint that says the group's aim was to commit violent acts against the United States. The two men both face a single charge of conspiracy to commit federal crimes. Also named in the complaint is Carswell's father, Luqman Ameen Abdullah, an imam at a Detroit mosque. Abdullah was killed in Dearborn, Mich., on Wednesday when he resisted arrest and fired his gun at federal agents. Authorities say Abdullah was the leader of Ummah, a black Muslim group that endorsed violence and hoped to establish a Sharia-law state within the United States.

Detroit Jihad |
2009-10-30 |
by Robert Spencer Luqman Ameen Abdullah, the imam of Detroits Masjid Al-Haqq (Mosque of Truth), was killed Wednesday in a shootout with FBI agents. The agents were trying to arrest him on charges of conspiracy, receipt of stolen goods, firearms offenses and more. Agents also arrested eight mosque members; then Thursday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police caught Abdullahs son, Mujahid Carswell. Two other accused jihadists also fled, and have not yet been found. According to the indictment, in his mosque in Detroit Luqman Abdullah was preaching offensive jihad and the establishment of a Sharia state in North America. This sovereign Isamic state would be ruled by Islamic law and by the apparent godfather of Abdullahs movement, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. Al-Amin is the former Black Panther and convert to Islam who gained fame under the name H. Rap Brown. Al-Amin is now serving a life sentence for murdering two police officers, while his disciples, like Luqman Abdullah, carry on the message he articulated so memorably in the 1960s: If America dont come around, were gonna burn it down. In the spirit of his mentor, Abdullah has told his flock: America must fall. He has encouraged the Muslims in his mosque to support Hizballah, the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. He exhorted them to bestir themselves to pious deeds: We should be figuring out how to fight the Kuffar that is, unbelievers. We got to take out the U.S. government. The U.S. government is nothing but Kuffars. Among the unbelievers were FBI agents, about whom Abdullah declared: Deal with them, deal with them the way, the way they supposed to be dealt with . Its not that complicated, man .If they are coming to get me Ill just strap a bomb on and blow up everybody. A law enforcement official wrote in an affidavit that Abdullah and his followers have trained regularly in the use of firearms, and continue to train in martial arts and sword fighting in accord with Abdullahs dictum that every Muslim believer should have a weapon and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed. Abdullah found justification for all this in the Islamic holy book, the Quran, which he said justified stealing, robbing and other illegal acts, as long as they profit Islam. One would think that Muslim spokesmen in America would be anxious to prove their moderate bona fides by repudiating Abdullah, praising the efforts of law enforcement officials, and announcing new measures to teach against the understanding of Islam that prevailed at the Masjid al-Haqq and to shore up the moderate Islam that politically correct orthodoxy insists prevails in all mosques in America in the first place. But no such luck. Instead, they praised Abdullah and excoriated law enforcement. Rest at link |

Detroit mosque leader killed in FBI raids
2009-10-29 | |||
More detailed version of earlier story... The leader of a black separatist Detroit mosque was shot and killed Wednesday during a series of FBI raids that resulted in charges against 12 and the death of an FBI dog. At least six of those charged -- who face conspiracy, weapons, and stolen goods charges but not terrorism charges -- were in federal custody late Wednesday afternoon. "Don't shoot, coppers! We're comin' out!" "Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, Mahmoud!" The case involves the Joint Terrorism Task Force and prosecutors from the national security unit of the U.S. Attorney's Office. A complaint filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit names Luqman Ameen Abdullah, imam of the Masjid Al-Haqq mosque in Detroit, as "a highly placed leader of a nationwide radical fundamentalist Sunni group." He was killed in a gun battle during one of the raids, according to a joint statement by federal officials. Abdullah, 53, also known as Christopher Thomas, was the local leader of a black Muslim group that calls itself "Ummah," or the brotherhood, and wants to establish a separate state within the United States governed by Sharia law, Interim U.S. Attorney Terrence Berg and Andrew Arena, FBI special agent in charge in Detroit, said in a joint statement.
The complaint further alleged that an armed group known as the "Sutra team" protected the mosque. In January, when members were evicted from a building on Joy Road for non-payment of property taxes, Detroit police confiscated two firearms, about 40 knives and martial arts weapons from Abdullah's apartment, the complaint alleged. The mosque then relocated to Clairmount in Detroit, the complaint says. Abdullah was to be arrested on a complaint that included charges of conspiracy to commit federal crimes, sale or receipt of stolen goods, providing firearms to a convicted felon, being a felon in possession of body armor, and altering or removing vehicle identification numbers. According to the complaint, Abdullah told an informant that if the FBI came to get him: "I'll just strap a bomb on and blow up everybody." On another occasion, he said: "We've got to take out the U.S. government," the complaint alleges. The others charged are:
Salaam, Saboor, Porter, Beard, Ibraheem, Raqib, and Pusha all appeared in U.S. District Court in Detroit late Wednesday afternoon and were held pending detention hearings Thursday. Others charged are still at large. The operation involved locations in Detroit and Dearborn. Yellow police tape was put up outside a trucking and warehouse firm on Miller Road just north of Michigan Avenue, and a Dearborn police car was parked outside. Another site involved in the raids was on Tireman near Interstate 96 on the city's west side. A third site raided by the FBI was on Genesee in Detroit.
