Only breadwinner of family Latif spending days at hospital with uncertainty
2024-09-14
[DhakaTribune] Abdul Latif, a 48-year-old shopkeeper from Lakshmipur district, is in critical condition at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after being brutally attacked by Chhatra League and Jubo League activists.

The attack occurred during a celebratory procession following the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Latif, the sole provider for his family, was severely injured on August 6 in Bhuiyan Haat, Char Ramich Union, Ramgati upazila.

As he participated in the procession, he was targeted by a group from Chhatra League and Jubo League, who attacked him with machetes, sticks, and rods, causing severe injuries including a large wound in his abdomen.

His intestines were exposed due to the continuous assault.

Local residents who witnessed the attack helped to stabilize Latif's injuries with a cloth before he was rushed to a nearby Sadar hospital.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to DMCH and admitted at 11pm on the same day.

He underwent a lengthy surgery from 12:30am to 5:30am on August 7.

Latif's wife, Bibi Asiya, expressed her anguish, stating that the family is struggling to cope with the financial strain caused by her husband's inability to work. With Latif unable to walk and an uncertain recovery timeline, the family faces severe hardship. Their home in Lakshmipur has also been flooded, adding to their difficulties.
But he had time to be in a "procession"
Asiya has appealed for financial support from the community to help her family through this challenging time.

The violence is linked to a larger political crisis involving student protests and violent clashes with political groups and law enforcement.

The recent unrest has led to widespread casualties, with over a thousand people reported killed in various incidents, including police shootings.

Following the "red movement" and "Bangla Spring," which led to significant unrest, Sheikh Hasina's government was dislodged, and a 17-member interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus was sworn in on August 8.

Suspended Juba League leader Samrat freed on bail
2022-05-12
[NEWAGEBD] The jail authorities on Wednesday freed suspended Juba League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat on bail as he was granted bails in all four cases filed against him.

Samrat is facing charges relating to money laundering, illegal casino business, illegal bars, and possession of illegal arms, after the Rapid Action Battalion arrested him on October 6, 2019 during the drive against illegal casino business and illegal bars.

’After receiving a copy of his bail order granted by a Dhaka court on Wednesday morning in the corruption case, we have withdrawn jail’s wardens from the Coronary Care Unit of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital at 4:30pm where Samrat was undergoing treatment,’ Dhaka Central Jail’s senior superintendent Suvas Ghosh told New Age.

BSMMU director (hospital) Brigadier General Nazrul Islam Khan, however, told New Age that the medical board, which was monitoring Samrat’s health, would take decision today whether he should be released from the hospital.

’His health condition is not good,’ he added.

RAB detains Samrat’s business partner in Bhola
2019-10-31
[Dhaka Tribune] The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained an associate of expelled Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
leader Ismail Hossain Samrat
...Oooh, a three-namer! He must be important...
from the Ilish Ferry Ghat in Bhola Sadar upazila
...if you go down to the last file cabinet in the second sub-basement at the local RAB headquarters, you’ll find a 3:1 map of the upazilla, folded up small. When you unfold it — take it outside on a windless, sunny day or you will undo all the work that went into making the thing, about which certain parties will not be even slightly amused — the location of Ilish Ferry Ghat will be immediately apparent....
on Wednesday.

The detained, Zakir Hossain
...clearly a putz of a two-namer, but at least his parents could afford the second one...
, 45, was Samrat’s business partner.

RAB also recovered a pistol, four rounds of bullet, four bottles of liquor, two mobile phones, and Tk1,160 from the scene.
Score! Usually it’s three round of bullet and a shutter gun, nothing more. Sergeant Siddique’s evidence room must be full to bursting for him to put out like that.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhola model cop shoppe, Enayet Hossain, told the Dhaka Tribune: "Acting on a tipoff,
*Ring, ring* “Mahmoud the Weasel here. I have a tipoff for the boys.”
RAB-8 conducted a drive in the area and arrested Zakir when he was trying to flee the area."
“There he goes, boys! The first one to catch him gets an extra biscuit with his tea while polishing the rounds of bullet in the evidence room.”
“On it, Sarge.”
“On it, Sarge.”
“Meeee — that biscuit is mine! Coming through, boys, I want that biscuit!”
Zakir, from Shantinagar, Dhaka,
...he was led astray by the fancy girls and pretty boys of the big city...
was in hiding for 10 days at his grandfather-in-law’s house after Samrat’s arrest, the OC added.
He shared the crawlspace under the veranda with a goodly collection of the local snakes and mongooses, so it wasn’t a restful situation. He was honestly happy to be caught, poor man.
RAB has filed two separate cases with Bhola model cop shoppe in this connection, one under the Arms Act 1878 and the other under Narcotics Control Act 1990.
*Blink* That’s a heckuva time range. The Arms Act 1878 must be a pip if it’s still in use.
ARREST OF CASINO KINGPIN SAMRAT
RAB arrested Samrat and his accomplice Arman from Comilla’s Chauddagram upazila on October 6.
A business partner and a henchman? When did our illustrious three-namer have time to sleep?
A mobile court, led by RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam, sentenced Samrat to six months in prison under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2012, after they recovered two kangaroo hides from his Kakrail office.
Good lord. The RAB has a dedicated court on wheels now? It makes sense, I suppose — they were up to fourteen RAB units the last time we looked in on them, and expanding rapidly. Everyone wanted an RAB of their very own, with their cool sunglasses and efficient handling of miscreants of all sorts, including river pirates.
He was then sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

2018-12-16
[Dhaka Tribune] BNP leader Mirza Abbas and his supporters have been attacked allegedly by ruling Awami League activists during his election campaign in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha area.

A group of 30-40 ruling party activists wielding rods and sticks attacked the BNP candidate for Dhaka 8 constituency and his supporters near Segunbagicha kitchen market around 12noon on Saturday, said Mirza Abbas’ media coordinator, Nahid Nazrul.

He said at least 60 people were maimed in the attack, reports UNB.

Nazrul said police incarcerated

Later, at a presser at his Shahjahanpur residence, Mirza Abbas said: "I could have died had I not been saved by my leaders and activists during the attack."

He strongly condemned and protested the attack.

Jubo League leader abducts schoolgirl to marry
2016-11-27
[Dhaka Tribune] A leader of Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
, Awami League’s youth affiliate, in Rajshahi has allegedly kidnapped a tenth-grader at gun point to marry her.

"Jubo League leader Sohel Rana along with 12 activists on six cycle of violences broke into my house at Taherpur municipality of Bagmara upazila on Friday evening, firing blank shots, and whisked away my daughter," said the girl’s father.

"They assaulted the family members, including women, before taking away the girl at gunpoint," he said.

The family members alleged that the girl was taken to the mayor’s home and immediately married to Rana.

Jubo League activists, who were around the house after the abduction, made sure that the family members could not go to the police.

The family claims that Taherpur Jubo League President Asadul Islam, Chhatra League
... the student wing of the Bangla Awami League ...
President Korban Ali, ward unit Awami League President Mizanur Rahman and several other leaders of the ruling party and its affiliates were involved in the abduction.

The girl’s brother said that they were later called to the mayor’s home. "They threatened to kill us if we reported the matter to the police," he said.

The family members claimed that they had not reported the incident to police in view of life threats. They suspect that the local mayor was also involved.

Selim Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bagmara police, said that they had moved to rescue the girl, but were later informed by Taherpur Mayor Abul Kalam Azad that she was safe and sound at his home.

"Rana and the girl were in a relationship. She was brought from her home as the family rejected the marriage proposal," said Mizanur.

When contacted, Mayor Azad said that the girl had not been married off with Rana and problems between two families over the issue had been solved.

Marriage Registrar Abdul Malek said that he had not registered the marriage as the girl was below 18.

Relatives of accused threaten to kill Shahanur Biswas
2016-11-27
[Dhaka Tribune] Shahanur Biswas did what any father would when his daughters faced constant sexual harassment ‐ he protested. In retaliation, he was brutally attacked on October 16 by a gang of youths including a local UP member of Kaliganj in Jhenaidah that led to both his legs being amputated.

He is now being treated at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka.

On Wednesday, 14 of the accused surrendered before a court and were sent to jail following a High Court’s order, but Shahanur’s family is receiving threats from the family members of the accused.

His elder daughter Sharmin Akhter used to attend Jessore Women’s College but her studies abruptly ended in 2013 because of the constant sexual harassment by the stalkers.

"They used to block my path while going to class and repeatedly propose marriage. They also threatened to throw acid on my face if I rejected their proposal and now they have attacked and maimed my father because he protested," Sharmin said.

Her younger sister Shahana Akhter, who is a class VII student, stopped going to school after the same gang of stalkers, who are also involved in drugs business and crimes in the area, after the attack on her father Shahanur.

Some days before the attack, Shahanur of Noldanga village informed one Shahin, the son of former UP member Mohsin, and another villager about his daughters’ harassment and asked them to settle the matter. But it only worsened the situation.

Shahanur was attacked on October 16 soon after Shahin discussed the matter with Kasthavanga Union Gay Pareehad member Kamal, also the general secretary of the union unit Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
According to Shahanur’s wife Arjina Begum, UP member Mehbubur’s son Azad, UP member Kamal and their supporters -- Jahid, Hasan, Billal, Imdadul and Dukhu -- conducted the attack with crowbar and rods. They first hacked his legs and severed his tendons while Mehbub and Kamal shot at his legs from pistols.

He was first taken to Jessore Sadar Hospital and then to NITOR, where doctors amputated his legs from thighs on October 29.

As the local police refused to register a case, Yakub Ali, Shahanur’s brother-in-law, filed a case with the District Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court on October 17. Later, Shahanur’s elder brother Samaul Biswas filed a separate case against 16 people, including the seven persons accused in the first case.

UP member Mehbubur’s elder son Kajal and his accomplices have threatened to kill them when the detainees are released. "Nobody is bothering you now, but when the media attention dies down and they are released from jail, we will torch your house and kill you all," Kajal reportedly threatened Shahanur’s elder brother Samaul Biswas.

"Three cases have been filed against me at the local cop shoppe including an extortion case, although I have no connection to any of these incidents," Shahanur said.

Shahanur wants to return home but fears further attacks as the accused are very powerful in the village. "I am not sure when I would be able return since the police seems to be conspiring and raising false charges against me by taking bribes from the accused party."

Dhaka Tribune tried to contact Kaliganj police OC Aminul Islam over his official number, but could not reach him. Sub-Inspector Imran received the call and said the OC was unable to talk due to physical illness.

"There is nothing to fear at all. May be they have been misinformed. All the accused have been nabbed
You have the right to remain silent...
and sent to jail; they will be punished according to the law," Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune, dismissing the allegations against the police.

2016-11-23
[Dhaka Tribune] The High Court has ordered police to arrest the attackers of a father, who has lost his both legs in the attack for protesting the stalking of his daughter at Noldanga village in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah, within 72 hours.

In a suo-moto rule, the HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah yesterday also ordered the district superintendent of police to file a report in this regard before the court by November 27.

The HC move came as a news item on the incident, published in a daily newspaper yesterday, drew their attention.

Both legs of victim Shahanur Biswash had to be amputated because of his injuries he had received while the stalkers of his daughter beat him up on October 16, according to the report.

The father, who is a peasant, is undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor), popularly called Pangu Hospital.

After the incident, police had allegedly denied lodging any case against the attackers.

Later, Shahanur’s family filed two cases with a local court accusing 23 people.

Md Kamal, Kastobhanga union parishad member and also general secretary of local unit of Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
‐ the youth front of ruling Awami League, has been made the prime accused, according to media report.

[Dhaka Tribune] CCTV footage of an older man being mercilessly beaten by a group of young men has created an uproar on social media since Monday afternoon.

The video shows five men launch a lightning attack on an elderly man with canes and a metal rod, repeatedly hitting him on the arms and legs as he tries to protect himself with his bare hands.

The time stamp on the CCTV image shows that the attack took place on September 18 around 6:40pm.

Immediately after being floated on Facebook, the footage went viral and comments and opinions from angered netizens started pouring in.

At one point, a young man in a red shirt comes to the rescue and tries to prevent the perpetrators from continuing to beat him. Eventually, he manages to fend off the attackers, taking a severe beating in the process.

The injured man appears to be in shock and stumbles into a chair.

After a brief lull in the violence, the footage shows one of the attackers return. He repeatedly strikes the now injured man who is seen sitting in a chair cradling his injured arm.

The Dhaka Tribune’s Jhenaidah correspondent Nayan Khondoker identified the older man as Muktar Hossain Mridha, 65, and the young man with the red shirt as Golam Morshed Mridha, 30, from Kripalpur village under Abaipur union of the district’s Shailkupa upazila.

They are father and son.

The incident was captured by the shop’s CCTV camera, the OC said.

Sumon Mridha, Muktar’s other son, filed a case over the assault on October 19.

In the case statement, he claimed that 10 local politicos, including the upazila vice-chairman, the Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
’s upazila unit president, general secretary, Swechchashebak League upazila unit president and Chhatra League
... the student wing of the Bangla Awami League ...
upazila unit general secretary were behind the attack.

Sumon told the Dhaka Tribune that the defendants have been threatening his family ever since a Jhenaidah court granted them bail.

The Dhaka Tribune repeatedly attempted to contact Shailkupa police Sub-Inspector Iqbal Hossain, the investigating officer of the case. He has not received the calls.

The Mridhas are being treated at BDM Hospital in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area after being transferred from Jhenaidah General Hospital at death's door.

Nasim to Mahfuz Anam: Resign from Daily Star
2016-02-13
[Dhaka Tribune] Health Minister Mohammad Nasim has said the Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam should resign from the newspaper now that he has admitted to running "false corruption stories" against the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
based on information provided by the DGFI.

"He has already lost his credibility by publishing those fake stories and now he should quit the newspaper as the readers have lost their faith in him," Nasim said at a joint meeting of the Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
in Dhaka yesterday.

"There is no guarantee that he [Mahfuz] will not run such stories in future to mislead the nation," said Nasim, also the Awami League-led 14-party alliance spokesperson.

On a TV talk show earlier this month, Mahfuz admitted to running graft stories against Hasina during the 2007-08 military-backed caretaker regime on information fed by the military intelligence outfit DGFI.

"I admit it. It was a big mistake as an editor, in my journalism career," he said on the talk show. The editor later clarified that it was a lapse in his editorial judgment in publishing reports without verifying them independently.

Nasim said: "Mahfuz Anam aimed at removing Hasina from politics and bring anti-democratic forces to power to implement the scheme of the DGFI."

The beleaguered editor has been accused in several defamation cases. Prime Minister Hasina's son, and also her ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy and several MPs have demanded legal action against him.
