Former DR Congo president Kabila loses immunity over alleged M23 rebel ties
2025-05-24
[RFI.FR] On Thursday, 88 senators voted in favour of lifting Joseph Kabila's immunity; five opposed and three abstained.

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi alleges Kabila conspired with the Rwanda-backed M23, whose recent offensive has intensified the more than three-decade-long conflict in the east of the country.

Kabila, who has been outside the country since 2023, was not present in the chamber at the time of the vote.

By the vote, "the Senate authorises the prosecution and lifting of Joseph Kabila's immunity," declared the upper house's speaker Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde.

Kabila now faces the prospect of being tried in military courts for "treason, war crimes, crimes against humanity and participation in an insurrectionary movement".

Bloody Mineral: With Trump's Arrival, Africa is on the Brink of a New War

[REGNUM] The world has yet to fully assess the global consequences of the change of power in the United States. But it is already obvious that American foreign policy will undergo serious changes.

Such a strategically important direction as Africa is no exception. However, no one expected that changes would begin so quickly and the continent would find itself on the threshold of a new major war.

PROFITS OF WESTERN CORPORATIONS
The M23 (March 23 Movement) rebel group, which has seized control of much of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in recent years, says it has recaptured the key city of Goma, capital of North Kivu province, which is home to large reserves of rare earth metals, from government forces.

In addition to gold, copper, cobalt and diamonds, the Congo has large reserves of coltan, a valuable mineral used to make smartphones, tablets and other devices. Its production is the cause of serious armed conflicts, so it is no coincidence that coltan is called the "bloodiest" mineral. There is little of it on Earth, and the largest electronics manufacturers need more and more raw materials every year.

The bulk of coltan is smuggled out of Congo through neighboring Rwanda. The largest processing plants are located on its territory. And it is the Rwandan armed forces and special services that the Congolese side accuses of supporting separatists and direct participation in the armed conflict.

Last year, Rwanda signed an agreement with Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto to explore and develop lithium in the country, an official announcement was made on January 29, 2024. Rio Tinto Group is an Australian-British concern, the third-largest transnational mining and metallurgical company in the world and, incidentally, the main competitor of the Russian company RUSAL.

The investment agreement envisages the creation of a joint venture with the Rwandan company Aterian to develop lithium and related products (cesium, tantalum, etc.). Rio Tinto plans to invest $7.5 million, which will allow it to become the owner of 75% of the lithium production, located in the southwest of the country (on the border with the DR Congo) on a site of 2,750 hectares. The investment decision on Rwanda shows Rio Tinto's global strategy to take a significant share of the market for the metal needed for batteries.

Experts have long known that Rwanda's rare earth metals processing facilities, located in the west and south of the country, operate on raw materials mined in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. And now, under various pretexts, Kigali is carrying out aggression against its neighboring state, destabilizing the situation in the entire region, provoking a humanitarian crisis, and all this for the sake of profits for Western corporations such as Rio Tinto.

With Donald Trump in power in the White House, Rwanda has decided to build on its success. Which will likely result in another major bloodbath in Africa.

CHANGE IN US POLICY TOWARDS AFRICA
For the national interests of the United States, the geopolitical and geo-economic importance of Africa has increased significantly in recent years.

And President Trump, who has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to question conventional wisdom, including his own past judgments, is likely to pay significant attention to the African Continent, despite his previous statements about wanting to focus on domestic issues and his cool attitude toward Africa during his first term in 2017–21.

It is important to clarify that this does not refer to the place that Africa will occupy among the foreign policy priorities of the new administration, and, accordingly, not to the volumes of funds allocated. There will be a change in approach and a reorientation of attention to African countries other than those on which the Biden administration was counting.

For example, the well-known US Agency for International Development (USAID), which is often considered responsible for implementing the US “soft power” and “supporting democracy,” is likely to face significant budget cuts. The agency is plagued by accusations of meddling in the affairs of other countries.

Many humanitarian programs will be cut, not only in the area of human rights protection, but also in practical areas - in agriculture, health care, etc. And this will hit individual African countries and vulnerable groups hard.

Without a doubt, entire layers of African societies, made up of activists and humanitarian workers who use the corresponding budgets, will be left not only without work, but literally without food.

THE LOGIC OF CONFRONTATION WITH CHINA
On the other hand, the largest infrastructure project implemented by the United States in Africa, the Lobito transport corridor, will be supported and continued. Construction of the railway within the corridor is planned to begin in 2026. 830 kilometers of track should connect Lucano in Angola with Chingola in Zambia. The project envisages extending the railway to the enterprises of the Zambian copper belt. The work is estimated at 2.3 billion dollars.

Some experts call the "Lobito Corridor" the "Trump Corridor" because the idea appeared back in 2020 during the first presidential term of the "strongest American leader", and the project equally includes both commercial interests and geopolitical logic. That is, American policy will become less ideological, more practical and at the same time subordinate to this logic.

We are talking about confrontation with China and the definition of Beijing as the geopolitical "enemy number one", which became a certain consensus of the American elite during Trump's first term in office. And if we reason in the logic of opposition to the Celestial Empire, then Africa could become the key space for confrontation between the two powers.

As strange as it may sound, the key link in China's strategy is not Taiwan, not the bordering Central Asia or the countries of Southeast Asia, but Africa. Simply because of the presence of a huge number of minerals, including those critically important for modern sectors of the economy, in the extraction of some of which China already has a monopoly.

Also, due to objective factors - economic and population growth - in a number of African countries, China has seriously increased its imports in recent years. Africa is also a promising market, which is forgotten by the same Western mining companies. If you look at China's most famous initiative, "One Belt, One Road", it turns out that it was African countries that received the most funding.

In the energy sector alone, China has financed more than 36 projects (mostly hydroelectric and solar power plants) in at least 19 African countries. In addition, between 2021 and 2023, Beijing signed 66 project contracts with African governments, 57 of which were in sub-Saharan Africa, and only two contracts were signed outside the Belt and Road Initiative.

As a result, Africa will remain a primary focus of American foreign policy, along with the Middle East, where Israel has strong interests, and Southeast Asia, where US attention is focused on Taiwan, but not only.

SANCTIONS AND ISRAEL'S INTERESTS
The Republicans' toolkit for combating China's growing influence includes not only positive cases (like the "Lobito corridor"), but also negative ones. We are talking about sanctions that will be widely applied to African elites who allowed themselves to choose the "wrong partner."

Apart from China, where everything is pretty clear, many forget that the Republicans are almost completely in solidarity with Israel's foreign policy. The latest events in the Middle East are indicative in this regard. But this also applies to the African direction.

Under Trump, South Africa and a number of other African countries that allowed themselves to be too harsh in their criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the latest crisis in the Gaza Strip will find themselves in the crosshairs of American sanctions and other forms of pressure from Washington. At the same time, the United States will pay special attention to countries that have come under significant Israeli influence in recent years: Morocco, Ethiopia, Chad, Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda.

It is worth remembering that it was the Republicans who initially began to effectively use such an instrument as sanctions in international politics – this is a fact.

Just Security, an information resource at New York University School of Law and considered a source close to the White House administration, predicts that the Trump administration will widely use sanctions against Africa. The author of the article, Brad Brooks-Rubin, a senior adviser at the US State Department’s Office of Sanctions Coordination, reports that the Trump administration, unlike Biden, will be able to use this system of pressure more successfully:

“This could open up new opportunities to advance broader policy, national security and even economic goals, such as competition with China, supply chain security for critical minerals and other natural resources, and even immigration.”

As successful cases, the author cites the Trump administration's sanctions measures from 2017 to 2020 against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (which prevented Joseph Kabila from retaining power ) and against South Sudan (which helped end the civil war).

Overall, however, the idea that the Trump administration will be able to more effectively deal with the consequences of the huge array of sanctions that the Democrats have created against Russia and China is highly questionable.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR RUSSIA
The strategy of confronting China and defending Israel's interests can also be supplemented by the Republicans' dislike of traditional Western partners. To the point that in a number of areas, the Trump administration may prefer Russia to France as a partner in Africa (we are talking, of course, about the Sahel).

For example, Republicans cannot stand French President Emmanuel Macron. Phenomenally, but it is a fact: France’s recent defeats in Africa, including the forced and humiliating withdrawal of French troops from Chad, have caused Republicans to feel a sense of restrained satisfaction.

On the other hand, sanctions restrictions on a number of African countries (the "stick method") from the White House will once again push these countries towards Russia. It should not be forgotten that Russia and African countries have similar experience in resisting Western sanctions. Some African countries have been under sanctions pressure for a very long time: Sudan since 1993, Zimbabwe since 2003. And this is another circumstance that brings us closer together.

Such experience also provides an opportunity to implement a system of counter-sanction measures. Starting with interaction and coordination of a common position at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international platforms and ending with the implementation of specific economic steps. The first action could be to study the mechanisms for implementing Western sanctions and the practices of their application against African countries, as well as a comparison with the current Russian experience.

Africa is literally the storehouse of the collective West. Without access to African resources, all scientific and technical progress of the Western world loses its base, and the Chinese end up as winners. And in this sense, the position of African countries, which have largely refused to follow the Western propaganda, is very indicative.

Recall that 26 African countries did not support the resolution calling for an end to Russia's military operations in Ukraine. Eritrea voted against the resolution and expressed clear support for Moscow, 16 other African countries abstained, and nine countries did not take part in the vote.

Russia has no need to show solidarity with the interests of China or the United States on the African continent. Its goal is different: to consolidate and expand its own influence in the conditions of confrontation between these two powers, in particular to fully settle accounts with its long-standing opponent, France.

Returning to the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it can be noted that at the grassroots level in Congolese society there are numerous calls for the need to invite Russia and Russian instructors to ensure security in the eastern provinces of the country. These calls are indicative from the point of view of the possible growth of not only the relations between our countries, but also the popularity of Russia on the Black Continent as a whole.

We can equally act as independent arbitrators and as defenders of all those unfairly offended and disadvantaged on the continent.

Ex-Mossad chief 'threatened' ICC prosecutor to drop Israel investigation - report
2024-05-28
[Jpost] Former head of the Mossad, Yossi Cohen, reportedly pressured former International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to close the investigation of Israeli war crimes, The Guardian reported on Tuesday.
“Once upon a time, O Best Beloved, in a land far, far away…” Not current event, then.
According to the report, Cohen and Bensouda secretly met in the years preceding her decision to open an official investigation in 2021 on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Palestinian territories.

The Guardian noted that Cohen’s involvement against the ICC occurred while he served as head of the Mossad. The report cited an Israeli source that noted that the Mossad sought to “compromise the prosecutor or enlist her as someone who would cooperate with Israel’s demands.”

Another source told The Guardian that Cohen was acting as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's "unofficial messenger."

COHEN MADE VEILED THREATS TO THE ICC PROSECUTOR
The Guardian quoted Cohen as saying, “You should help us and let us take care of you. You don’t want to be getting into things that could compromise your security or that of your family.”

Other reports of intimidation were revealed by The Guardian, which added that the Mossad, under Cohen’s tenure, took an interest in the prosecutor’s family, even obtaining transcripts of conversations between Bensouda and her husband in an attempt to use these conversations to discredit her.

An individual, quoted by The Guardian, stated that Cohen used “despicable tactics” against the former prosecutor, even likening his behavior to “stalking.”

Additionally, in the attempts to sway Bensouda, Israel was reportedly supported by Joseph Kabila, former president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who played an unknown role in supporting the alleged acts.

The investigation came to light following Karim Khan, Bensouda’s successor, announcing his intention to seek arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials, among them Netanyahu.A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, when contacted by The Guardian, said, “The questions forwarded to us are replete with many false and unfounded allegations meant to hurt the state of Israel.”

Cohen, the former Mossad chief, was also a former close confidant of Netanyahu. He joined the Mossad in the early 1980s and was appointed as head of the Mossad by Netanyahu in 2015. He retired from Israeli intelligence in 2021.

Cohen has been involved in other controversial incidents as Mossad chief. Earlier in May, he told the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) that the Israeli government approached Qatar to fund civilian life in the Gaza Strip, including negotiating transfers of money to Hamas.

The New York Times also substantiated Cohen’s remarks, noting that he managed the Qatari file for several years while serving as Mossad chief. The report stated that during his final years as Mossad head, he believed “there was little oversight over where the money was going.”

DRC: Ally of President Tshisekedi elected head of parliament
2024-05-24
[AFRICANEWS] The ally President Felix Tshisekedi returns to a role he has led before. Vital Kamerhe, speaker of the national assembly from 2006-2009, was elected Wednesday to the same position, ending months of bickering and a threat by the President to dissolve parliament.

A veteran of Congolese politics, the 65-year-old became allies with Tshisekedi in 2018, when he withdrew his candidacy for president.

His Union for the Congolese Nation party also played a key role in helping Tshisekedi in dismantle a coalition with his predecessor Joseph Kabila in 2020.

But Kamerhe who served as Tshisekedi's chief of staff was soon arrested and sentenced to 20 years in jail for embezzlement. In 2022, he was acquitted on appeal and released.

In 2023, Kamerhe returned to Tshisekedi's cabinet as minister of the economy just in time for the election in which Tshisekedi won a second term as president.

His election as speaker of parliament paves way for the formation of a new government.

American detained in failed Congo coup is former DC drug dealer and married father-of-three...
2024-05-21
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] …who was running gold mining and e-cigarette business with slain mission's leader
  • Benjamin Zalman-Polun was one of three American citizens detained in Congo

  • READ MORE: Son had been preparing for war before following father into coup

Malanga's American son Marcel and another unidentified American man were captured and paraded around after the failed coup. Zalman-Polun's passport was gleefully displayed by the victorious troops.

Zalman-Polun and Malanga were involved in gold mining in Mozambique together, according to several African news outlets. The business partners also reportedly worked together in the e-cigarettes industry in Mozambique.

In 2014, the DC native pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute 50 kilos or less of marijuana in DC between October 2011 and April 2012, per legal documents seen by DailyMail.com.

According to his wife Hannah Polun's social media, the family has been living in the affluent coastal town of Ballito, South Africa, for the last couple of years.

In the early hours of Sunday, a group of around 50 men armed in camouflage fatigues attacked the residences of the prime minister, the defense minister, and a senior politician tipped to become speaker of parliament, according to the army.

Chilling footage caught the moment two of the plotters were seized trying to flee the country across the Congo River before groveling for mercy to Congolese soldiers as they lay bleeding in the street.

Marcel Malanga was one of them. He accompanied his former refugee father to the central African country from their home in Utah to lead the coup against the autocratic government of President Felix Tshisekedi.

A Facebook page appearing to belong to Malanga posted a live-streamed video of what appeared to be the attack.

'We, the militants, are tired. We cannot drag on with Tshisekedi and Kamerhe, they have done too many stupid things in this country,' Malanga said in Lingala in the video.

Christian Malanga moved to Salt Lake City as a 15-year-old refugee with his family in 1998 but returned to Congo in 2006 where he served in the military, and stood for parliament in 2011 only to be arrested two days before the poll.

He attempted to build his United Congolese Party in exile after returning to the US in 2012 and was accused by Congolese intelligence of plotting the assassination of then president Joseph Kabila.

Eight years after arriving in the US, Malanga returned to his homeland in order to do military service, rising to the rank of captain by 2007. During this period, he had at least 235 soldiers under his command.

Following failed attempts at moving into politics in DRC, Malanga returned to the US in 2012 but continued to be active in the country's affairs while in exile.

Malanga, who had previously threatened on social media to overthrow Tshisekedi, first attempted an aborted coup in 2017, according to army spokesperson Sylvain Ekenge.

The army has shared a photo of his body sprawled on the grass in blood-stained fatigues.

In the ministry's video, a detained man described as a recruiter for Malanga's cause says Malanga had planned to proclaim himself president.

"He indicated he had the support of the Americans, but we realise that he didn't really have any," the detainee said.

The U.S. ambassador has said the United States will fully cooperate with the Congolese authorities and hold accountable any U.S. citizens involved.

Marcel appears to have ad a perfectly average upbringing in the US. He graduated from Copper Hills High School in the community of West Jordan, Utah, in 2020 where he was also a star football player.

After high school, he went on to play for the Utah Islanders, a team which helps to develop players to play college football.

However, his social media is filled with references to war and images of assault weapons.

Nearly a year ago Marcel shared a picture with his father and captioned it: 'honored to have you as my earthly father. I can’t wait to change the world with you.'

, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, resigned on Tuesday triggering the dissolution of his government, the presidency said in a statement.

Lukonde handed his resignation to President Felix Tshisekedi eight days after the validation of his mandate as a national deputy.

He plans to join parliament, after being elected in the country’s December polls as a member of the assembly representing the Kasenga district.

It is a legal requirement in the DRC that serving ministers are not members of parliament, which means one has to choose whether to remain a politician or quit to remain in government.

In a second statement on Tuesday, the presidency said it had called on Lukonde’s government to continue running the country until the formation of a new administration.

Lukonde was appointed prime minister in February 2021, at the age of 43, following the break-up of the alliance between Tshisekedi’s coalition and that of former president, Joseph Kabila.

After Tshisekedi was re-elected in December, he named a representative to identify a majority coalition within the National Assembly in view of forming his next government.

According to the provisional results which must be confirmed by the Constitutional Court, the parties supporting Tshisekedi won almost 94 per cent of the seats in the assembly.

DRC: Corneille Nangaa joins forces with M23 to create political platform

, scheduled for December 20th 2023, is causing a stir on the web and leaving public opinion stunned.

The creation of the "Alliance Fleuve Congo" was made official on Friday in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital. At the helm is Corneille Nangaa, the former chairman of the Electoral Commission.

In a video posted on social networks, he openly allied himself with several rebel movements, including the M23, which took up arms against the government in November 2021.

The movement, which is active in the east of the DRC and, according to sources, supported by Rwanda, was represented in Nairobi by its president Bertrand Bisimwa.

Corneille Nangaa has announced that his platform currently comprises 17 political parties, two political groupings and several gangs.

A close associate of former president Joseph Kabila, he is calling on gangs scouring swathes of the DRC to join his movement.

According to its founder, the aim of the "Alliance Fleuve Congo" is to save the DRC, which has been in a state of chronic instability for three decades, mainly due to the weakness and absence of the state, to re-establish its illusory sovereignty and put an end to insecurity.

Corneille Nangaa is promising a new door to salvation, and says he will do everything in his power to restore stability and create a more suitable economic environment in the face of the failure of the current policy.

Corneille Nangaa, who is at war with Kinshasa, also denounced the "plundering of public property" and "misappropriation of funds".

Corneille Nangaa also thanked the Kenyan authorities for their hospitality. Nairobi, whose soldiers involved in the East African force recently left the DRC, accused of colluding with rebel groups, including the M23.

DRC: Former prisoner promoted to rank of general in army reshuffle

ex-President Laurent Kabila in 2001, has been promoted to the rank of brigadier general in an army reshuffle.

Eddy Kapend, who had been Kabila’s top military aid, was part of a group of soldiers released in 2021 following pardons issued by President Félix Tshisekedi, who took over from Joseph Kabila, the son of the late president, in 2019.

Kapend has always denied involvement in the murder plot, and rights groups at the time criticised the trial.

The army reshuffle comes just over a week after the former inspector general of the police and army, John Numbi, launched a verbal attack on the president.

Numbi, who lives in exile in Zim-bob-we, described Tshisekedi as "incompetent", saying "the army and police were no longer bound by their duty to obey".

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
he stopped short of calling for an insurrection.

Kapend has been assigned as commander of the 22nd military region in his home territory of Katanga, a strategic province just two months ahead of the elections.

Former president Joseph Kabila, presidential opponent Moïse Katumbi, and Numbi, also hail from the south-eastern region.

Tshisekedi has denied there was a political motivation for the move, saying Kapend’s appointment was based on his merits as a military officer and his loyalty to the supreme commander.

, Joseph Kabila, has rejected accusations from Uganda that he gave sanctuary to rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces.

Last week, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni
...President-for-Life of Uganda. He assumed office in 1985. His primary virtue is being prefereable to both his predecessors, Idi Amin and Milton Obote...
said that Kabila allowed the Islamist rebel group to expand and exploit mineral resources during the Congolese leader's time in office.

Kabila led the DRC from 2001 to 2019 when current president Félix Tshisekedi took over.

In response to the accusations, Kabila's spokesperson said in a statement his government recognised the ADF as a terrorist organization and kept the international community, including the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
, informed "on the abuses perpetrated by the ADF and the need to intervene".

The spokesperson added that "These international organizations rejected this qualification of the Congolese government of the word 'terrorist'. It is past time that the facts have proven that Joseph Kabila was right and that it was necessary to intervene urgently."

The ADF was founded in 1996 and was originally a Ugandan rebel group, carrying out attacks in the Rwenzori region in western Uganda.

The rebels were eventually driven out and fled over the border into the jungles of eastern DRC.

They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. DR Congo's President Now in Full Control of Government
2021-04-14
[All Africa] President Félix Tshisekedi has named a new cabinet, two months after the appointment of Prime Minister Sama Lukonde.

This team of 56 ministers - 41 men and 15 women - is his first cabinet after the collapse of the coalition with former president Joseph Kabila's 'Front Commun pour le Congo' (FCC). The new team that President Tshisekedi calls "the warriors" is tasked with reviving the Congolese economy. It is also expected to address insecurity, particularly in the eastern provinces of the DRC.

The new cabinet will have to be vetted by the National Assembly before Prime Minister Lukonde presents his government's programmes. He said his government's priorities will be security, health, education, justice, agriculture, fisheries and livestock, economy, the electoral process, infrastructure, and the digital economy.

Sacked DR Congo general died by 'hanging': president
2020-03-07
[Soweto Live] DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi ordered a probe into Delphin Kahimbi's death.

DR Congo's sacked former deputy chief of military intelligence, who was under European Union sanctions, died by hanging, President Felix Tshisekedi said Saturday.

Delphin Kahimbi, 50, a close associate of former president Joseph Kabila, had died of a heart attack on February 28 at home in Kinshasa, his wife and media reports said.

But rumours abounded that he was killed or committed suicide.

Tshisekedi ordered a probe into the death, and the preliminary findings were made public on Saturday after a cabinet meeting.

"According to the evidence ... it turns out to be a hanging," a statement quoted the president as saying.

DR Congo: Mourners pay tribute to late opposition leader
2019-06-01
[Al Jazeera] Tens of thousands of mourners have gathered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
's capital, Kinshasa, to pay tribute to Etienne Tshisekedi, a late iconic opposition leader and father of the country's current president.

The body of Tshisekedi, who died in Belgium in February 2017 at the age of 84, lay in state on Friday in the 80,000 capacity Martyrs' Stadium after being repatriated the evening before.

The ceremony was hosted by Tshisekedi's son, Felix, who was elected to the DRC's presidency in a December ballot and had long vowed to bury his father's remains at home. Among those in attendance were Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his Angolan and Republic of Congo counterparts, Joao Lourenco and Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The return of Tshisekedi's body, which will be buried on Saturday, was consistently blocked by his son's predecessor and former longtime leader, Joseph Kabila.

Supporters of Tshisekedi said he was so potent a threat to the former president, of whom he was a vociferous critic, that even his corpse had to remain abroad.
