Kim Jong-nam Grew Depressed After Uncle's Execution
2017-02-19 | |
Kim moved to the condominium around 2008 to make it easier for his children to attend the school but moved in 2011 because South Korean residents had found out where it was after Han-sol brought home a South Korean girlfriend. There were no signs of the family anywhere. Han-sol last year said he was heading to Macau as he left France, where he studies. But South Korean expats there said they have not seen him recently. Sol-hui, who graduated from school last September, has also not been seen. One friend of the family's said, "I tried to call Jong-nam's wife after learning about his assassination on the news last night, but her mobile phone was turned off. They probably had an action plan in case something bad happened to him." When asked about the possibility of Jong-nam's family defecting to South Korea, the friend said. "North Korean agents can't do whatever they want in Macau, which is Chinese territory. Macau may have been safer than South Korea." According to people who met Kim in Macau, he settled there around 2002, entering on a visitor visa and later gaining citizenship. One person said Kim regularly frequented three or four Korean restaurants and went to the casinos. He did not smoke but drank one to two bottles of soju or 10 shots of boilermakers in one sitting. Another, who spotted him in a sauna, said he had a dragon tattoo on his stomach and chest. Until his father Kim Jong-il died in December 2011, Jong-nam traveled widely throughout Southeast Asia and even to Europe. When Kim Jong-il suffered a massive stroke in August 2008, he flew to France and brought back neurologists to Pyongyang. But after his younger half-brother Kim Jong-un executed their uncle Jang Song-taek in December 2013, he became more reclusive and limited his travels to Southeast Asia, apparently because his allowance from Jang had been cut off. His first wife Shin Jong-hui and a daughter live in Beijing, and there are rumors that he has mistresses in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. He always flew alone but showed up with female companions when dining in restaurants across the region. "Kim Jong-nam had a bright personality, but he grew depressed after Jang Song-taek was executed and often said 'life is so sad' and expressed dismay at how his uncle was killed," the family's friend said. A North Korea source said Kim made a lot of money by running a trading business with North Korea with the help of Jang Song-taek. "The execution of his uncle and benefactor must have been a huge shock." Meanwhile, Voice of America reported that Kim had a Facebook account under the name Kim Chol, which was linked to Han-sol's and had 164 friends. Among around a dozen photos, some appear to have been taken in Macau in 2010.

Kim Jong-nam is the eldest son of former leader Kim Jong-il and was thought to be the designated heir until he fell from grace in 2001. Since then he has lived in lavishly funded exile in Macau and Beijing and has had practically no contact with his younger half-brother.
Kim Jong-nam has been critical of the dynastic succession of power in the North, talking freely to a Japanese journalist about the need for reform in the North. But lately he has been more quiet. There is speculation that China is grooming Jong-nam to take over if the regime of Kim Jong-un were to collapse. "Rumor has it that China is protecting Kim Jong-nam," the source added.

Loyalty Erodes Among N.Korean Elite |
2015-10-22 |
![]() NIS chief Lee Byung-ho told lawmakers that if loyalty or a sense of common destiny was set at 100 points during the reign of nation founder Kim Il-sung, it was perhaps 50-70 under his son Kim Jong-il but is now a mere 10. The NIS claimed Kim junior has admitted how hard it is to run a country. The spy agency believes it was pressure from China that prevented the North from launching another space rocket earlier this month to test long-range missile technology. But a lack of technical preparation also played a role. There were widespread fears that the North would launch the rocket to mark the 70th anniversary of the Workers Party on Oct. 10. Asked about "nuclear backpacks" that were shown off by some soldiers during the anniversary parade, the NIS said the North "does not have the technology to miniaturize nuclear weapons yet." But an NIS officer later backtracked, saying the remark referred only to the backpacks, but the North does probably have the means to miniaturize nuclear warheads for missiles -- the official position of the government here. Most experts do not believe that the North has the requisite technology. The spy agency said it is constantly monitoring the North's nuclear reactor at Yongbyon and the North is still making preparations for a fresh nuclear test, if not anytime soon. Kim Kyong-hui, Kim Jong-un's aunt and the wife of the executed eminence grise Jang Song-taek, is being treated for chronic disease in Pyongyang but does not seem to be in particularly poor health. The NIS said it has a confidential document issued by the North's Bureau 225, an intelligence agency for overseas operations, which calls on operatives to create public opinion that North Korean box mines that maimed two South Korean soldiers were a fabrication by the South Korean government. North Korea has some 380 informal open-air markets, the NIS said. A U.S. dollar officially trades for 106 won but 79 times that in the black market. Some 58,000 North Korean workers are working in foreign countries. About 3.7 million North Koreans are using mobile phones, but no South Korean-models because the regime has warned that they could be hacked, the agency said. The N.Korean Firm That Dodges Int'l Sanctions |
2015-07-02 |
![]() The daily said North Korea's overseas businesses range from oil exploration to taxi firms, but they all have one thing in common -- the KKG corporate logo. The logo is also found on new taxis in Pyongyang and airport buses in the North. "KKG is one of several joint ventures in North Korea and it's one of the biggest ones," the paper quoted an Asian official as saying. A source said KKG is short for the Korean name that can be translated as Kumgang economic development corporation, which used to be run by the North Korean military politburo until it was transferred to the National Defense Commission headed by Kim Jong-il in the late 2000s. It is the biggest of the companies tasked with earning valuta for the regime and competes with a rival state business led by eminence grise Jang Song-taek until he was executed in 2013. The source said KKG president Hwang Yong-sik drives around in a BMW whose license plate bears the number 216, the birthday of former leader Kim Jong-il -- the mark of a very senior official. "The North Korean end of the KKG network leads to a shadowy organization called Office 39 of the Workers Party," the Financial Times cited Asian and U.S. officials as saying. The source said among KKG’s jobs are buying oil and luxury cars overseas to keep the elite loyal. "Hwang Yong-sik was able to survive last year's purge because he was not affiliated with Jang Song-taek," the source added. |

N.Korean Ex-Army Chief 'Locked Horns with Technocrats'
2015-05-16 | |||
North Korean armed forces minister Hyon Yong-chol was executed because he fell foul of a younger generation of technocrats that make up the core of leader Kim Jong-un's regime, American experts estimate.
"Military officials in North Korea seem to be more under fire than those in charge of economic policy," Merrill said.
Meanwhile the chief of the Army politburo, the minister of the People's Armed Forces, and the Army chief of staff -- the top three military posts -- have been reshuffled several times. Armed forces ministers have served on average eight months. Among more adventurous speculation here has been that Hyon was executed because he fell asleep during one of Kim’s speeches. But the government here believes Merrill may be on to something. "Since he took power, Kim Jong-un has given more weight to technocrats, promoting them to senior positions in the Workers Party, a supreme body superior to the Cabinet," a government official here said. There has been repeated conflict between military leaders and technocrats over lucrative projects handled by former eminence grise Jang Song-taek since his execution. Pundits say it must have been in this process that Hyon and other military leaders were purged. The military accrued enormous power under Kim Jong-il's "military-first" doctrine and became a virtual state within the state that was difficult to restrain even by the leader. Another U.S. expert speculated that Kim is taking extreme measures to appease complaints about economic hardship. Ken Gause of the Center for Naval Analyses said despite his repeated vows to solve the chronic food shortage, Kim has made little economic progress and is using the political struggle to offset this failure.

Fat Boy Won't Tolerate Sleepy Listeners
2015-05-16 | ||
One of the reasons North Korean Army chief Hyon Yong-chol was executed was because he was caught dozing off during a meeting. The official Rodong Sinmun daily on April 26 carried a photo showing Hyon with his eyes closed while leader Kim Jong-un was giving a speech at a military rally on April 24-25.
A National Intelligence Service official said, "Kim Jong-un is very sensitive about dozing off during meetings and punishes officials who are caught." The official added that Hyon may have only looked asleep as his eyes were closed. The draconian measure appears aimed at instilling a sense of fear among top brass. Kim's uncle and former eminence grise Jang Song-taek was executed after lounging during one of Kim's speeches and applauding feebly. One member of a state-run think tank said, "Kim was raised as a prince and is extremely power-hungry and proud. He considers any dissent or improper behavior a personal insult.

3 Women Behind the N.Korean Throne

They are leader Kim Sul-song is the oldest of the three. She is believed to have been born in 1974, the eldest daughter of former leader Kim Jong-il and his second wife Kim Yong-suk. She studied political economics at Kim Il-sung University. Since the late 1990s, she has worked in the Workers Party.
Ken Gause of the U.S. Center for Naval Analyses speculates that Kim Sul-song is at the apex of a structure that collects and controls the information flow in the regime. Kim Sul-song and her husband, Sin Pok-nam, a senior party official, played a central role in purging former eminence grise Jang Song-taek and are now spearheading the reform of the party, New Politics Alliance for Democracy lawmaker Hong Ihk-pyo said last year quoting a North Korean source in China. Ri, who was born in 1989 or thereabouts, is believed to have been influential in helping Choe Ryong-hae, who had been almost elbowed aside by Hwang Pyong-so, return to the center of power recently. Ri came to Choe's rescue because she is close to his wife Kang Kyong-sil, according to rumors. There also is speculation that Air Force general Ri Pyong-chol was appointed to the top decision-making National Defense Commission in September because Ri Sol-ju's father was an Air Force pilot. This suggests that she is a vital ally for anyone seeking promotion. Kim Yeo-jong has taken a key post in the Workers Party, though what exactly her duties are is unclear.
