‘Shocking truth.' 160,000 military families struggling with food insecurity, report
2021-11-18
[JustTheNews] Feeding America estimates that 29% of military members faced food insecurity in the previous year.

At least 160,000 active-duty military members are struggling to feed their families, according to Feeding America, which coordinates over 200 food banks across the country.

It is unknown what the exact scope of the issue is, as there have been no formal studies. But activists say it has continued for years, mostly with junior-level enlisted service members -- ranks E1 to E4 in military parlance -- who have children, The Associated Press reported.
I remember being told by some former young military wives about their shame at needing food stamps to get through the month back when Jimmy Carter was president. Is this a thing that waxes and wanes, or has it been consistently like this the entire time?
"It's a shocking truth that's known to many food banks across the United States," said Feeding America's government relations officer, Vince Hall. "This should be the cause of deep embarrassment."

During the previous year, 29% of military members faced food insecurity, according to an estimate by Feeding America.

Junior enlisted ranks receive modest pay and have to frequently move, making it difficult for their spouses to maintain a job, the AP reported.

There is a significant network of military-adjacent charitable organizations, like Blue Star Families and the Armed Services YMCA, that have created an infrastructure of food banks near the majoriy of most domestic bases.

Military families living outside of base grounds receive a Basic Allowance for Housing to help cover the majority of their costs. But the 2008 Food and Nutrition Act counts the allowance as income when calculating food stamps eligibility, which results in disqualifying thousands of military families.

However, the allowance does not count as income with WIC benefits for mothers and children or for tax reasons.

"It's one of these things that the American people don't know about, but it's a matter of course among military members. We know this," said Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), a former Blackhawk pilot who lost both of her legs in a helicopter crash in Iraq. "We're the mightiest military on the face of the earth and yet those who are on the lower rung of our military ranks are -- if they are married and have a child or two-- they're hungry. How can you focus on carrying out the mission and defending our democracy. If you're worried about whether or not your kid gets dinner tonight?"

A U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA) spokesman told AP that officials are "taking a fresh look at our authorities with respect to this policy."

Duckworth has sponsored a bill that would establish a Basic Needs Allowance for needy military families. Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.) has asked for the Department of Defense to study the problem and repeal the USDA regulation that prevents military families in need from receiving SNAP benefits.

Josh Protas, Vice President of Public Policy for MAZON, an organization that has extensively researched military hunger, said military members dealing with food insecurity are less likely to re-enlist and more likely to be distracted in the field, according to the AP. He added that losing such talent may also be generational as military service tends to run in families.

Democrats Demand Reparations and Open Borders for Afghan Migrants
2021-08-29
[Breitbart] Sixty-six Idiots progressive Democrats are telling President Joe Biden to open the nation’s border to Afghan migrants because the U.S. bears moral responsibility for the wars in Afghanistan.

“After decades of disastrous U.S. intervention, one thing is clear: We have a moral responsibility to provide safe harbor and refuge for the Afghan people,” the August 26 letter, which does not set an upper limit on the inflow of Afghan migrants, states.

“The U.S. war in Afghanistan has caused irreparable harm to Afghans,” the letter claims, without mentioning the many hard-fought humanitarian gains Americans delivered or mentioning the almost 2,400 dead Americans — in the two decades since 2001.

The letter is from the House’s progressives, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI), and Rep. James McGovern (D-MA). It reflects their view that foreigners are entitled to easy access to the United States because “white supremacy” in the U.S. is responsible for the many ills in the world.

The U.S. must provide Special Immigrant Visas to many Afghans who fought alongside the U.S. military and must invite many more into the P-2 refugee program, the progressives say.

House Debates Recruiting Illegal Aliens Ahead of Americans for Military
2015-05-14
On Tuesday, the Breitbart News team on Capitol Hill brought to light Congress's efforts to allow illegal aliens to enlist in the U.S. military, endangering national security and shoving American citizens to the back of the line for the benefit of invaders. Today, the House Rules Committee will continue to debate this proposition. Live updates are below.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 5:13 PM: Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) says it's "ludicrous we're using AUMF's (Authorization for Use of Military Force) from 2001 to justify" Obama's conflicts on immigration and amnesty.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 4:51 PM: Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL)
asked: "Why are we talking about immigration when we're dealing with a defense bill?"

He went on to echo other GOP lawmakers who commented on the Gallego amendment, saying the it "has nothing to do with defense." The Gallego amendment "will jeopardize the entire bill," he concluded.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 4:42 PM: Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL)
to Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) I disagree with your argument that "we lack enough Americans and lawful immigrants to meet" our military needs, adding that the "we are here to help U.S. citizens and lawful immigrants."

UPDATE, by Alex Swoyer, 4:39 PM: Rep. Polis (D-CO) defended Gallego amendment: "This is really a job creator in the private sector."

Brooks disagreed.

"There's also a distinction about the quality of jobs," he said.

The two Congressmen are arguing about whether the Gallego amendment would open up jobs in the private sector as illegals leave those positions, to join the military for citizenship under the Gallego amendment provision.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 4:37 PM: Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) expressed support for the amendment proposed by his colleague Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) to strike the Gallego amnesty amendment in the 2016 NDAA, saying the "immigration issue doesn't really belong" in the NDAA. The amnesty amendment does not benefit the military, he added.

UPDATE, by Matthew Boyle, 4:36 PM: Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX), a member of the House Rules Committee, said there "is nothing about the Gallego amendment that helps the military" adding that the NDAA is not the "place" for immigration to be debated. "The amendment does not belong in the bill in the first place," Burgess said.

Chairman Sessions added that he's heard views from lots of members on this.

Democratic Rep. James McGovern (D-MA) defended the amnesty amendment contained within NDAA from Gallego, saying it passed through regular order. Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) a liberal Democrat from Colorado, is also defending it with the argument of "military readiness" arguing that somehow illegal aliens may be better than Americans serving in the military. "We need to have the very best men and women" serving in the military. He also argued incredulously that this would create jobs in the private sector.

UPDATE, by Alex Swoyer, 4:32 PM: Rep. Sessions says this issue must be debated.

Rep. Burgess said, "There is nothing of the Gallego amendment that helps the military. The amendment does not belong in this bill in the first place."

UPDATE, by Matthew Boyle, 4:27 PM: Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) is now testifying in favor of the Brooks amendment. Brat won his election in 2014 thanks in large part to now former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor backing the exact same policy -- amnesty for DREAMers in the NDAA -- and Brat said that the defense bill should not be the place for immigration matters.

UPDATE, by Alex Swoyer, 3:53 PM: According to Politico Florida Playbook's Marc Caputo on Wednesday morning, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) --a Republican--is pushing harder for even more amnesty in the NDAA than what Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ)
0% got in there. Curbelo is specifically pushing for an amendment from Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA), the so-called ENLIST Act, into the bill.

"Curbelo's one of a handful of Republicans still pushing for immigration reform. He hopes that the House Rules committee, perhaps at its meeting today, greenlights an effort to allow a vote on whether to amend Rep. Jeff Denham's Enlist Act onto the National Defense Authorization Act," Caputo wrote on Wednesday."

House Approves $410 Billion Spending Bill
2009-02-26
The Democratic-controlled House approved $410 billion legislation Wednesday that boosted domestic programs, bristled with earmarks and chipped away at policies left behind by the Bush administration.

The vote was 245-178, largely along party lines.

Republicans assailed the measure as too costly -- particularly on the heels of a $787 billion stimulus bill that President Barack Obama signed last week. But Democrats jabbed back.

"The same people who drove the economy into the ditch are now complaining about the size of the tow truck," said Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., pointing out the large increase in deficits that President George W. Bush and GOP-controlled Congresses amassed.

From the GOP side, Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas said the legislation was "going to grow the government 8.3 percent ... but the family budget which has to pay for the federal budget only grew at 1.3 percent last year."

The debate occurred one day after Obama told Congress in a prime time television address that he intends to cut deficits in half over the next four years, and one day before he submits tax and spending plans for the coming year. Given the extraordinary costs of the financial industry bailout and the stimulus, the White House projects this year's budget shortfall will be $1.5 trillion, triple the previous record of $455 billion in 2008.

In a symbolic bow to the recession, Democrats included in the spending measure a prohibition on a cost-of-living increase for members of Congress for the year.

Overall, the legislation would provided increases of roughly 8 percent for the federal agencies it covered, about $32 billion more than last year.

The bill is intended to allow smooth functioning of the government through the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year. The Senate has yet to vote on its version.

After persuading lawmakers to keep earmarks off the stimulus bill, Obama made no such attempt on the first non-emergency spending measure of his presidency. The result was that lawmakers claimed billions in federal funds for pet projects -- a total of 8,570 earmarks at a cost of $7.7 billion, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense. Majority Democrats declined to provide a number of earmarks, but said the cost was far smaller, $3.8 billion, 5 percent less than a year ago.

Among the earmarks was one sponsored by Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., who secured $200,000 for a "tattoo removal violence outreach program" in Los Angeles. Aides said the money would pay for a tattoo removal machine that could help gang members or others shed visible signs of their past, and anyone benefiting would be required to perform community service.

Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said the bill included at least a dozen earmarks for clients of PMA Group, a lobbying company now at the center of a federal corruption investigation.

"It's simply not responsible to allow a soon-to-be-criminally indicted lobbying firm to win funding, all borrowed, in this bill," he said. No charges have been filed against the firm or its principals, although the company's offices were raided earlier this month, and it has announced plans to disband by the end of the month.

Federal prosecutors are investigating PMA Group's founder and president, Paul Magliochetti, who is a former top aide to Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee that funds defense programs.

In remarks on the House floor, Republican leader John Boehner urged Obama to veto the legislation, citing earmarks.

At the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs responded only in general terms whether that was possible.

"There is great concern in this building and by the president about earmarks," Gibbs said.

"Without having looked specifically at a piece of legislation, I'm hesitant to throw out that four-letter word, `Veto."'

After eight years without control of the White House, congressional Democrats also used the legislation to target several policies of former President Bush.

Under the bill, Mexican-licensed trucks are banned from operating outside commercial zones along the border with the United States. The Teamsters union, which supported Obama's election last year, had sought the move. The Bush administration backed a pilot program to permit up to 500 trucks from 100 Mexican motor carriers access to U.S. roads.

Bush administration restrictions on travel to Cuba were loosened in the legislation, to permit more frequent visits and expand the list of family members permitted to make trips to see relatives on the Communist nation-island.

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., took aim at a provision that he said would vastly broaden the government's ability to invoke the threat of climate change to halt economic development. "Most all of the shovel-ready projects on the trillion-dollar stimulus bill would in fact be at risk," he said.

Nominally, the provision halts implementation of a Bush-era regulation that lists the polar bear as a threatened species, and Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., and chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said it would merely give the new administration 60 days to decide its fate.

Democrats also inserted a provision into the bill to end a program that allows students in the District of Columbia to use federal funds to attend private schools of their choice. Boehner, who helped establish the program as part of a political bargain several years ago, called the move "hideous."

Captured laptops detail FARC's international support
2008-10-03
BOGOTÁ, Colombia -- Email messages linking the Colombian Marxist guerilla insurgency (known by its Spanish acronym, FARC) to politicians, union activists and left-wing parties overseas have revealed a network of supporters spanning several continents, and have kept tensions high between Colombia and some of its neighbors.

"The FARC have been less isolated than originally believed, and have wide-ranging political contacts throughout Latin America and elsewhere," Michael Shifter, an analyst with Washington, D.C.-based Inter-American Dialogue, wrote by email. While Shifter called the relationships "isolated," he said "the support network did give the FARC a sense that they were seen as legitimate by some in the international community, which in turn contributed to their self-understanding as political actors."

Most of the information comes from laptop computers, external hard drives and flash drives reportedly recovered from a FARC campground located in Ecuador that the Colombians bombed and then searched in March. The attack killed Raul Reyes, the guerrillas' second in command, who acted as the group's foreign minister.
Among our contestants...
James Jones, an American academic and aid consultant who has studied Colombia for decades, maintained a friendly correspondence with FARC leaders, advising them on how to obtain international recognition and "internationalize" their cause. Jones also reported to FARC leaders on his meeting with U.S. Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.) about Colombia. Both Jones and McGovern's office have said they were only seeking a way to free rebel hostages and resolve Colombia's long conflict.

In an email statement, Jones said he had a "cordial" relationship with the FARC, but that he did not ". . . approve of the way the FARC too often disregard the welfare of the civilian population. And I certainly don't condone hostage-taking." He argued that in order to end the civil war, the guerrillas should not be isolated, and that the trust he had developed with them was what drove Uribe administration to target him.
Interesting article.

Thinking the unthinkable: Who follows Ted Kennedy
2008-05-22
The vultures are circling. Discreetly, of course...
WASHINGTON - People in Massachusetts suddenly are thinking the unthinkable: Who possibly could succeed Sen. Edward Kennedy, patriarch of the famed political family that has dominated the state for more than four decades? The news about Kennedy's cancerous brain tumor has led to quiet speculation about whether he may try to handpick a successor, possibly paving the way for a relative to take over his seat.
Whether? Possibly? Uh-huh...
The prospect of Kennedy's eventual departure also has touched off a scramble involving Massachusetts congressmen and others.
Stand back! It's a Hack Frenzy!!!
Kennedy, 76, is not up for re-election until 2012. But his medical condition has people wondering if he might resign before then or decline to run for another term.
Or...well, nevermind.
Given Kennedy's stature in the Democratic-dominated state, it's a sensitive topic that few in politics are willing to talk about publicly. "There will be great respect and delicacy, of course," said Tufts University political science professor Jeffrey Berry.
That should be "or else", perfesser..
Over the years, the Kennedys have not shied away from grooming family members for office.
Nooooooo! When did this happen!
In 1962, Kennedy won the Senate seat that his brother, John, held before winning the presidency in 1960. The Kennedys helped arrange the appointment of John's old roommate, Benjamin A. Smith, to the seat until Edward Kennedy turned 30 and was legally old enough to run for the Senate. Kennedy has held the seat ever since.
He was elected the day my wife was born.
With the senator's health now in question, Kennedy's nephew, former Rep. Joseph Kennedy II, D-Mass., is seen as a possible heir. He is sitting on about $2 million in leftover campaign funds.
...and whatever his "friends from Venezuela" might be able to "contribute".
But the younger Kennedy, who provides low-cost heating oil to the poor through Boston-based Citizens Energy Corp., has balked at running for governor in recent years and shows scant interest in jumping back into politics.
600G's for basically making one commercial a year. Joe pulls on the coveralls and lugs a hose up to some old lady's three decker and waves to her through the window while he pumps her oil. No wonder it's a "non-profit". I wouldn't be going anywhere either.
There is the possibility one of the senator's sons, Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I.,
In this case, the "D' stands for "Doofus".
or Edward Kennedy Jr., could seek their father's seat. Kennedy's wife, Vicki, has been mentioned, too. There are other Kennedys, too, who could decide to run.
The son's low key. Ya don't hear much about him. Don't know if he'd be interested. The wife? Who knows. I read that's who Kennedy wants to get it.
Brown University political science professor Wendy Schiller, who studies Congress, doubts that a family member will succeed the senator, given the faded Kennedy mystique."The days when you could do that easily without any backlash — those days are gone," she said.
And the old man, probably one of the most evil bastards America has ever produced, isn't around anymore to smooth out the sharp edges.
When the Kennedys maneuvered to win Edward Kennedy his Senate seat four decades ago, the family was intent on building a political dynasty and the Senate was seen as a launching pad for the White House, Schiller said. "I don't see that necessarily happening with any of the second-generation Kennedys now," she said. "Kennedys can be effective in all sorts of arenas. They don't necessarily have to go to the Senate now." Beyond the Kennedy clan, Massachusetts boasts a lengthy list of potential candidates from both parties:
...and an impressive list of lifelong liberal hacks it is.
Possible Democrats include Gov. Deval Patrick, Martha Coakley, the state's attorney general; Rep. Edward J. Markey; Rep. Barney Frank; Rep. Stephen Lynch; Rep. Michael Capuano; and Rep. James McGovern. Former Rep. Martin Meehan, who resigned his seat to become chancellor of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell last year, has $4.8 million in leftover campaign funds.
I'm surprised Marty didn't hang himself in his nice office up at UMASS-Lowell when he found out. If you'd have just hung on for another few months, Marty, the dream was there...
Among the potential GOP candidates are former Massachusetts Govs. Mitt Romney and William Weld; former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey; and former White House chief of staff Andrew Card. Romney's bid to unseat Kennedy in 1994 failed.
Romney? Maybe. The rest? Forget it.
Unlike most states, Kennedy's successor would be chosen by a special election, not the governor. State law requires a special election for the seat no sooner than 145 days and no later than 160 days after a vacancy occurs. The law bans an interim appointee. The law was changed in 2004, when Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry became the Democratic presidential nominee and Romney was governor. Before the change, the governor would have appointed a replacement to serve until the next general election. That would have created the opportunity to install a fellow Republican in office, a move Democrats who control the state Legislature wanted to block.
Heh...heh...heh. Well, boys, didn't that come back and bite you in the ass. Something else you can blame on Kerry.

Fifth Column
A FARC Fan's Notes
2008-03-25
Wall Street Journal house editorial

A hard drive recovered from the computer of a killed Colombian guerrilla has offered more insights into the opposition of House Democrats to the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement.

A military strike three weeks ago killed Raúl Reyes, No. 2 in command of the FARC, Colombia's most notorious terrorist group. The Reyes hard drive reveals an ardent effort to do business directly with the FARC by Congressman James McGovern (D., Mass.), a leading opponent of the free-trade deal. Mr. McGovern has been working with an American go-between, who has been offering the rebels help in undermining Colombia's elected and popular government. . . . The intervenor with the FARC is James C. Jones, who the Congressman's office says is a "development expert and a former consultant to the United Nations." Accounts of Mr. Jones's exchanges with the FARC appeared in Colombia's Semana magazine on March 15. . . .

"Receive my warm greetings, as always, from Washington," Mr. Jones began in a letter to the rebels last fall. "The big news is that I spoke for several hours with the Democratic Congressman James McGovern. In the meeting we had the opportunity to exchange some ideas that will be, I believe, of interest to the FARC-EP [popular army]."

. . .

Semana reports that Mr. Jones made some proposals to the FARC, including a Caracas meeting with representatives of Venezuela, Colombia, the FARC, other South American countries, U.S. Congressmen and the Catholic Church. "It would be almost impossible for Uribe to reject such a meeting," Mr. Jones wrote, "without burning himself a lot, nationally and internationally. If he persists in being against it, I have understood that there are ways to pressure him from my country [the U.S.]."

In a letter to Semana, Mr. Jones said his words were taken out of context. He says he is not in favor of the "violent methods of the guerrilla" or "the military solutions" of the government. He had only a professional relationship with the FARC and had to address them as he did because he had to build trust. Mr. McGovern's office says it knew what Mr. Jones was doing and engaged with him because "we need to find an interlocutor who could discuss these things including the safe haven" for the guerrillas.

We think the documents reveal something else entirely: Some Democrats oppose the Colombia trade deal because they sympathize more with FARC's terrorists than with a U.S. antiterror ally.

Congress Members 'Arrested' at Sudan Protest
2006-04-28
WASHINGTON -- Five Congress members were willingly arrested and led away from the Sudanese Embassy in plastic handcuffs Friday in protest of the Sudanese government's role in atrocities in the Darfur region. "The slaughter of the people of Darfur must end," Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., a Holocaust survivor who founded the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, said from the embassy steps before his arrest.

Four other Democratic Congress members _ James McGovern and John Olver of Massachusetts, Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas and Jim Moran of Virginia _ were among 11 protesters arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly, a misdemeanor subject to a fine. "We must hold the Sudanese government accountable for the attacks they have supported on their own citizens in Darfur," Olver said.

Dozens of demonstrators carried signs, some reading "Stop the slaughter" and "Women of Darfur suffer multiple gang rapes," in front of the embassy Friday morning. The protesters cheered as the Congress members and others were cuffed, hands behind their backs, with plastic ties and quietly led to a white police van by U.S. Secret Service uniformed officers. The arrests were expected. Lantos' office issued a news release about them in advance.
Sounds like the 'arrests' were staged, that would explain why no republicans were involved

The protesters called on the Sudanese government to accept a U.N. peacekeeping force in Darfur and allow humanitarian relief organizations full access to victims. The three-year-old conflict between rebels and government-backed militias has left at least 180,000 people dead, mostly from war-related hunger and disease, and some 2 million homeless.

President Bush on Friday renewed his call for a stronger international presence in Darfur. "The message to the Sudanese government is: We're very serious about getting this problem solved," Bush said at the White House. "We don't like it when we see women raped and brutalized. And we expect there to be a full effort by the government to protect human life and human condition." The United States has authorized more than $300 million for victims of the violence and to support peace talks.

Rallies against the violence in Darfur are planned in more than a dozen U.S. cities this weekend, including on Washington's National Mall on Sunday.
