carried out by the Iraqi army in Salahaddin province, the army said on Monday, with jihadist cells yet to be ousted from the country’s disputed areas.

The strike in territories disputed between the federal Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is the latest in an ongoing effort by Baghdad to rid the country of ISIS cells, in areas where a security vacuum allows them to operate.

The Iraqi air force "carried out successful airstrikes using F-16 aircraft, targeting a terrorist hideout in the al-Aith area within the Salahaddin Operations Command sector," the Iraqi army’s Joint Operations Command said in a statement.

Six ISIS members were killed in the strikes, according to the statement, which said that the operation was "in Dire Revenge for the deaders of Kirkuk."

On Wednesday, an ISIS ambush in western Kirkuk province - which also falls in the disputed territories - killed four Iraqi army soldiers. At least six suspected ISIS members, including a leader, were killed in an operation carried out by Iraqi forces in Kirkuk on September 19.

On Saturday, the Iraqi army announced that over 100 ISIS members have been killed since the beginning of the year.

Iraq sentences three ISIS members to death, six more airstruck in Kirkuk

(ISIS) members it said were responsible for attacks on security forces.

The Lions of Islam carried out attacks on security forces in Anbar and Salahaddin provinces and wanted to "create fear and panic among civilians," according to the court.

They were sentenced to death for participating in the commission of a terrorist act as defined under the 2005 Terrorism Law.

Iraqi forces have intensified their anti-ISIS operations across the country in recent months, particularly in the disputed areas.

Thousands of people have been detained across Iraq since 2014 for suspected links to terrorist groups, including ISIS, and hundreds have been executed. Human rights monitors have criticized the trials, saying they depend on confessions obtained through torture, they do not investigate specific charges such as genocide, and they exclude the victims, thereby denying them justice.

Iraqi warplanes kill six suspected ISIS members in Kirkuk
[Rudaw] At least six suspected Islamic State members, including a leader, were killed in an operation carried out by Iraqi security forces in Kirkuk province on Thursday, the army said, amid a spike in anti-ISIS operations.

“Three painful strikes by F-16 aircraft today resulted in the killing of a terrorist detachment consisting of six members, including the terrorist Omar Salah Nima, codenamed Abu Khattab, one of the most dangerous leaders of the ISIS terrorists,” the Iraqi army’s Joint Operations Command said in a statement.

Iraqi counterterrorism and intelligence forces raided the site after the airstrikes, discovering a “number of explosive belts, weapons, technical equipment, and various phones,” the statement added.

The strikes are the latest in an intensification of anti-ISIS operations across the country, particularly in the disputed areas.

Despite its territorial defeat, ISIS has continued to pose security threats in Iraq through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions, particularly in areas disputed between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) which stretch across provinces including Diyala, Salahaddin, Nineveh, and Kirkuk.

Two ISIS militants wearing explosive vests were killed during a clash with security forces in Kirkuk on Sunday, Iraq's interior ministry announced.

On Monday, Iraqi security forces arrested six ISIS members near the capital Baghdad and seized a pile of explosives.

Earlier this month, an Iraqi airstrike in the Hamrin mountain range in Diyala killed three ISIS militants.

In late August, a joint operation by the Iraqi army and US forces in the western Anbar province killed 16 ISIS militants, and the US military said on Saturday that the operation killed four ISIS leaders.

Iraqi airstrikes target suspected ISIS hideouts in Kirkuk, Salahaddin: State media
[Rudaw] A number of suspected Islamic State (ISIS) hideouts in Kirkuk and Salahaddin provinces were destroyed by Iraqi airstrikes late Tuesday, state media reported, amid a spike in air raids on alleged jihadist locations in the country.

“The heroes of the air force carried out painful strikes on hideouts within the Kirkuk and East Salahaddin operations commands, which led to their destruction,” state media said, citing a statement from Yehia Rasool, military spokesperson to Iraq’s prime minister.

Rasool said that the strikes were conducted after “specialized aircraft carried out reconnaissance and surveillance” missions which revealed their locations.

No information on casualties was readily provided, and the strikes come as the Iraqi air force intensifies its anti-ISIS operations across the country, particularly in the disputed areas.

(ISIS) Death Eaters were killed in an Arclight airstrike

carried out by the Iraqi air force in Diyala province, the army announced on Friday.

Iraqi warplanes "carried out a successful airstrike using F-16 aircraft in the Hamrin Mountains within the Diyala Operations Command sector, targeting a terrorist hideout with a terrorist detachment with three elements inside," the army’s Joint Operations Command said in a statement.

All three suspected Death Eaters were killed in the strike, the statement added, and "all weapons and equipment inside the hideout were destroyed."

The strike was the second on suspected ISIS locations in the Hamrin Mountain range within a month, with a previous bombardment in late August killing another jihadist cell.

Iraq’s air force regularly pursues and targets ISIS hideouts across the country, particularly in the disputed areas.

To combat ISIS in these areas, the Iraqi government and the KRG’s Peshmerga ministry agreed in 2021 to form two joint brigades that will be under full control of Baghdad.

In late August, a joint operation by the Iraqi army and US forces in the western Anbar province killed 16 ISIS Death Eaters.

In June, at least seven ISIS members were killed in two separate airstrikes in Salahaddin, days after three ISIS members were killed in an operation in Kirkuk.

(ISIS) in the Hamrin mountain range that crosses Kirkuk and Salahaddin governorates, with three members of the group inside amid a recent escalation in the Iraqi forces’ anti-ISIS operations.

Iraqi state media (INA) cited a statement by the Security Media Cell that the Targeting Cell of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, in cooperation with the Iraqi intelligence, on Sunday "managed to target an important hideout of the failed ISIS detachments in the Hamrin Mountains within the Diyala Operations Command sector, containing three terrorist members inside."

"Through the heroic actions of our brave hawks, a devastating airstrike was carried out by F-16 aircraft on this hideout, turning it into rubble over the heads of the terrorists," read the statement.

"A number of hideouts and caves, along with the weapons, ammunition, and logistical materials they contained, were destroyed," it added.

There were no immediate reports of casualties during the strikes in rugged Hamrin.

The Iraqi forces recently have increased their attacks on the group. On Saturday, at least seven members of the group were killed in two separate airstrikes in eastern Salahaddin province, and on Friday, three ISIS members were also killed in an operation in Kirkuk.

Despite its territorial defeat, ISIS has continued to pose a serious security threat to the country through hit-and-run attacks, bombings and abductions in several provinces, particularly in areas disputed between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which stretch across several provinces including Nineveh, Diyala, Salahaddin and Kirkuk.

[Rudaw] Two Iraqi airstrikes targeted hideouts of the Islamic State (ISIS) in eastern Salahaddin, killing at least seven members of the group including “a dangerous leader,” reported Iraqi security media cell on Saturday.

The operation, devised by the Joint Operations Command and carried out by Iraq’s national intelligence service in conjunction with the counter-terrorism service, struck “the most important” ISIS detachment in Tuz Khurmatu’s Palkana mountains, according to the statement.

“Two air strikes were carried out by F-16 aircrafts, which destroyed this tunnel as well as the rest of the hideouts leading to the killing of all members of the terrorist detachment,” said the media cell, noting that the detachment consisted of seven members according to preliminary information.

(ISIS) faceless myrmidons around six years ago, the forensics medicine department in Nineveh said on Wednesday.

"The number of unidentified bodies recovered since the liberation of Mosul from the old areas of the city reached 1,495 bodies, while the number of known bodies whose graves were uncovered reached 3,749," Shahed Arif Hamid, the director of forensics medicine in Nineveh province, told Rudaw’s Mushtaq Ramadhan.

ISIS swept through Iraq in 2014, capturing cities across the center and north of the country in a brazen offensive, including Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city and the capital of Nineveh province, where the group’s former leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared its so-called "caliphate."

The city was retaken in a major Iraqi and Kurdish counteroffensive in 2017, supported by the US-led global coalition.

According to Hamid, Mosul’s civil defense teams, who are responsible for uncovering remains from the rubble, receive fewer remains than previous years as there are no decomposing bodies left.

"If there is no claimant, the remains are left unidentified and in storage until a database for missing persons is announced, and anyone who has lost a relative must donate blood to match the samples with the missing bodies," she said.

Mosul’s Old City, on the western bank of the Tigris River that divides the city into two, was severely damaged as a result of the fight against ISIS and bombardments by both the Iraqi air force and the US-led coalition.

The process of uncovering bodies in Nineveh province began in May 2018, through government teams and volunteers.

According to statistics from Iraq’s High Commission for Human Rights, there are more than 800 bodies of children among the bodies of civilians exhumed in Mosul.

in the Sundij area of Diyala’s Kifri district, and the strike "resulted in the killing of members of the terrorist group and the destruction of their guesthouses," according to the country’s Joint Operations Command.

Iraqi and Kurdish security forces often carry out operations against members of the terror group despite an overall decline in their activities in recent years, and their hideouts are often tracked by the Iraqi air force and destroyed.

The turbans have particularly taken shelter in a security vacuum in parts of northern Iraq that are disputed between Baghdad and Erbil, stretching across several provinces including Diyala, Salahaddin, and Kirkuk.

The Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have discussed establishing joint brigades to secure areas disputed between the governments. Talks stalled because of elections and a year of political wrangling, but funds for two joint brigades are included in the draft 2023 budget.

In December, an Iraqi army spokesperson revealed that they had killed over 200 ISIS fighters in 2022.

Iraqi Army, Peshmerga Launch Joint Operation Against ISIS South Of Erbil
2022-07-20

Iraqi Security Media Cell announced on Tuesday the launch of a joint operation with Peshmerga forces against ISIS, focused on an area adjacent to the administrative borders of Erbil Governorate to the south.

In a statement, the cell said that the operation was launched, at dawn today, Tuesday, and is the fourth stage of Operation Solid Will, aimed at pursuing the remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Jabal Qarah Dagh Mountain.
Alternate spelling Qarachogh.
The operation is taking place in a joint security operation, in which units from the 14th and 16th Divisions reinforced with tanks, and units of the Peshmerga forces, and forces of the Counter-Terrorism Service participated as well.

The operation is backed by Iraqi army aircraft, according to the statement, in accordance with security understandings between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga.
Rudaw adds:
Units of the Peshmerga participating in the operation include the Zeravani and counter-terrorism forces and are supported by the Iraqi air force and a reinforcement of tanks.

Mount Qarachogh and its vicinity are located in a security vacuum between Baghdad and Erbil, stretching across several provinces including Kirkuk, Salahaddin, and Diyala, where locals live in constant fear of ISIS attacks.

Kurdish security forces on Thursday with coalition support announced they had taken down four members of ISIS who were behind a deadly attack that killed ten Peshmerga and three civilians in villages at the foothill of Mount Qarachogh.

The latest phase of Operation Solid Will comes three months after Iraq conducted another phase in its western provinces under the supervision of the Joint Operations Command and with the participation of numerous forces including the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

A Peshmerga operation in Mount Qarachogh in May led to the deaths of two ISIS fighters and the destruction of the jihadists' hideouts.

In its propaganda magazine on Thursday, ISIS claimed to have conducted 4 attacks in Iraq from July 7 to July 13, killing and injuring 6 people.

(ISIS) in these areas, Iraqi Security Media Cell announced.

Dubbed Solid Will, the new phase of the operation is carried out under the supervision of the Joint Operations Command units and participated by the Border Guard Command, Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi), Iraqi Special Forces, the Counter-Terrorism Service, and the Rapid Response Division, according to the statement from the cell.

"These operations, carried out by the security forces, aims to dry up the sources of terrorism, pursue ISIS terrorist elements, and clear the lands from the taint of terrorism and crime in its various forms," it added.

The operation seeks to eliminate the threat of ISIS through setting specific targets in different areas in the western provinces, and will heavily rely on accurate information from the intelligence agencies and the support of Iraqi air forces.

Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi arrived in Anbar province hours after the new phase started to closely monitor the campaign.

"I say to ISIS: You have tested us in various fields, militarily and security, praise be to God that we record victory after victory on a daily basis, and you are losing day after day," the PM’s office cited Kadhimi saying in a speech in Anbar.

The first phase of Solid Will, which sought to pursue ISIS remnants in Salahaddin, Anbar, and Nineveh, was conducted on March 29, lasting for three days. It resulted in the destruction of 19 ISIS dens and six tunnels, in addition to finding numerous explosive-laden vehicles, booby-trapped houses, an explosive lab, and a number of weapons and ammunition, including four Katyusha rockets, two RBG7 launchers, and 30 projectiles.
