Fire erupts at church in Upper Egypt due to short circuit - statement
2022-08-17
This is a different church catching fire from an electrical short than the one that caught fire Sunday at the other end of the country in Giza, near Cairo.
[AlAhram] A fire erupted Tuesday at a church in Upper Egypt's governorate of Minya due to an electrical short circuit, with no causalities reported, according to the Ministry of Interior.

In its statement, the Ministry of Interior said the fire that took place at the Anba Bishoy Church in New Minya City resulted from an electrical short circuit in one of the building’s unused halls according to church officials and witness accounts.

The Public Prosecution issued a statement saying that they were investigating the incident.

Governor of Minya Osama El-Qaday said in a media statement after visiting the church Tuesday afternoon that the fire took place in the first floor and did not spread to other floors.

Egypt’s Orthodox Coptic Church issued a statement on the incident stating that the blaze destroyed all the contents of the church without causing any casualties.

Only one person suffered from asphyxiation due to the smoke; he was treated on site and did not need to be hospitalised, according to Ministry of Health Spokesperson Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar.

He added that four ambulances were dispatched to the church; in addition, Minya General Hospital, Minya University Hospital and Health Insurance Hospital were put on alert in case of emergency.

Abdel-Ghaffar stated the ambulances arrived at the church within six minutes of receiving the call, adding that the fire was reported at 2:30pm.

Anba Bishoy church was inaugurated in June 2019.

On Sunday, a huge fire killed 41 people and injured 14 others in Abu Seifin Church in Giza governorate’s Imbaba district. According to the forensic examination the fire was resulted from an electrical short circuit.

2022-08-15
[AlAhram] President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has directed the Armed Forces Engineering Authority to revamp and repair Giza's Abu Sefein Coptic Church after a massive fire that broke out earlier Sunday, the front man for the Coptic Orthodox Church announced.

Chairman of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority Hesham El Swefy informed Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria in a phone call about Sisi's instructions to reconstruct the burnt church, the front man said in a statement.

El- Swefy offered his condolences to Tawadros over the incident's victims.

The blaze began at 8:57 am in the Giza's church, located Imbaba district, during the Divine Liturgy, leaving 41 people dead and 16 injured.

All victims have been transferred to Imbaba General Hospital and al-Agouza Hospital for treatment.

The country's public prosecution is investigating the tragic accident. Eyewitnesses told the Sherlocks that the accident resulted from an electrical short circuit in a power generator.

The Egyptian Red Islamic Thingy has also dispatched two psychological support teams to the two hospitals, where victims of the fire are receiving treatment, to help them get over the tragic event.

Egypt Postpones Trial of ISIS Terrorists till June
2021-05-12
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Egypt postponed the trial of 21 ISIS members to June 12 in the case known as the "ISIS Imbaba Cell II" in the Giza governorate.

One of the accused faces the charge of assuming the leadership of a terrorist group that aims to disrupt public order, endanger the safety of society, attack the general freedom of citizens, assault members of the armed forces and the police, harm national unity and social cohesion, and target churches.

The Public Prosecution charged the defendants with joining a terrorist group and committing terrorist financing crimes by possessing, supplying, and providing the group with money and information.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch cautiously raised his hat over the edge of the horse trough on the end of a stick......
the Cairo East Criminal Court delayed once again announcing the verdict in the case known in the media as "Filming the Belbeis airbase" for May 17th.

In 2017, an Egyptian court sentenced nine defendants to life imprisonment, and four to temporary imprisonment. It also sentenced four defendants to 10 years in prison, and four others were sentenced to five years.

They were also accused of receiving, by illegal means, one of the country’s defense secrets by taking photos of Belbeis airbase in preparation for targeting it.

The prosecution accused the defendants of killing and targeting security forces, monitoring a number of cop shoppes and vital installations, joining a terrorist group, and receiving training from ISIS-linked Ansar Bait al-Maqdis organization in Sinai.

The incident also included killing the deputy of Faisal cop shoppe in Suez, placing an bomb near a cinema in Suez, targeting army vehicles, the gas line at the Suez Petroleum Company and a ship in the canal, and monitoring security points along the Ismailia canal.

The same court postponed the trial of several defendants accused of joining a terrorist group and manufacturing bombs in an apartment in al-Haram in Giza governorate.

Investigations revealed that the defendants manufactured bombs inside an apartment, which was used by terrorist elements. The explosion killed seven coppers, three civilians, and injured 15 persons.

Egypt's Court of Cassation endorses final death sentences for 2 defendants in terror case
2018-06-27
[AlAhram] In a separate verdict, it endorsed prison sentences for 30 others who had appealed terror convictions

Egypt's Court of Cassation has endorsed final death sentences for two defendants in a terrorism-related case, as well as 10-to 15-year sentences for 30 others in a similar case.

The first case involved 16 defendants whose appeal against a lower court verdict had been rejected by the Court of Cassation.

They were convicted of joining the Moslem Brüderbund group, designated a terrorist organization, and forming a terrorist cell in the Imbaba neighbourhood of Greater Cairo, as well as being involved in violent incidents.

The second case included 16 defendants who were accused of similar terrorism charges in Beni Suef governorate.

In a separate decision, Cairo Criminal Court has added 187 names to the country's terror list.

The added names included Hamza Zobaa, a former Brotherhood front man, and Mohammed Nasser, a pro-Brotherhood host at al-Sharq channel which broadcasts from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
It also included Wagdy Ghoneim, an Lion of Islam Moslem preacher tied to the Brotherhood, who is believed to be residing in Turkey.

Under the country’s anti-terrorism law, any person placed on the terror list is subject to a travel ban and has their assets frozen.

The list contains over 1,600 names, including top Brotherhood leaders.

The Moslem Brüderbund was designated a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government in November 2013.

Egypt court sentences 10 people to death in 'Imbaba Terrorist cell' case
2018-03-11
[AlAhram] A Giza criminal court sentenced on Saturday 10 people to death in a case known in the media as the "Imbaba
...a working class neighbourhood that confusingly resides in either Cairo or Giza, it has been a Jemaah Islamiyah (“the Islamic Group”) stronghold since the 1980s. With the election of Mohammed Morsi and following his overthrow, Imbaba became a stronghold of Moslem Brotherhood support...
Terrorist Cell."

The court also sentenced five others to life imprisonment.

Saturday’s sentence comes after a preliminary death sentence issued by the court in late January pending the Grand Mufti’s non-binding opinion.

Referring death sentences to the Grand Mufti is a legal requirement before the sentenced is finalised, although the Mufti’s religious opinion is not binding.

The defendants were being tried for establishing an outlawed group from 2013 till March 2015 with the aim of attacking state institutions, harming national unity, targeting Copts, disturbing public order, endangering society, attacking police and security forces, and possessing unlicensed arms.

the smugglers who brought the chemicals in, according to statement

Egypt's armed forces have seized three explosives stores in Giza's lower-class districts of Imbaba and Warraq, and in North Sinai's Al-Arish, according to a TV announcement by Egypt's army on Wednesday.
And where exactly were the 'stores'?
The three stores contained 30 tonnes of bombs and weapons, according to the statement.

The statement added that "terrorist elements" smuggled the materials used in the explosive devises.

"The chemicals were smuggled illegally in containers which entered Egypt claiming to be full of chairs," the statement read.

The armed forces have also arrested a "number of terrorists" reportedly responsible for smuggling chemicals and weapons.

Security forces have, as is usual in Egypt, ramped up their activities to coincide with the beginning of the Eid Al-Adha holiday which started on Wednesday.

Nearly 200 arrested as Egypt marks 1 year since Morsi's ouster
2014-07-04
[CTVNEWS.CA] A series of demonstrations and small bombings marked the anniversary on Thursday of the ouster of Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
, and authorities responded by arresting nearly 200 people as part of their crackdown against Islamists.

One of the bombs went off accidentally inside an apartment outside Cairo, killing two suspected hard boyz who were handling the explosives, the Interior Ministry said. It said the men were in the apartment with two friends who fled after the blast in the Islamist stronghold of Kirdasah.

A security official said one Morsi supporter was killed during festivities between protesters and security forces in Cairo's twin city Giza. Late Thursday, a homemade bomb went off on a train in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, injuring five passengers, another official said. The bomb was placed in a suitcase under a chair-- in a rare incident of directly targeting civilians.

Morsi's supporters had called for mass protests a year after he was toppled by the military and detained, but the number of demonstrators during the day was mostly in the hundreds, sometimes just dozens - evidence of the reluctance by Islamists to take on the security forces after a months-long crackdown that has killed hundreds and tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
at least 22,000.

Thursday's demonstrations took place in Cairo, Alexandria, Assiut, the oasis province of Fayoum southwest of the capital and several other provinces.

Protests continued after nightfall, with skirmishes reported in the city of Suez, the southern city of Aswan and on the outskirts of Cairo.

Despite relatively small numbers, the protesters blocked some roads and rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against the military and President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, the former military chief who ousted Morsi following mass protests demanding he step down. El-Sissi was later elected president.

In other violence reported by officials, three separate bombings damaged cop shoppes but caused no casualties in Cairo's densely populated Imbaba district. A small bomb also went off near an air force hospital in Cairo late Wednesday, and bombs targeted a cop shoppe and a railway station in the southern city of Assiut, which has a large Islamist presence, on Thursday.

Two more bombs were defused on the main road leading to the famed Giza Pyramids and a stun grenade went off near a cop shoppe in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, causing panic.

Quarrel between army, police personnel in Imbaba contained
2014-03-03
[Egypt Independent] An altercation occurred on Sunday afternoon between army and police personnel outside Imbaba Police Station after which tear gas was fired to disperse combatants.

No injuries were reported.

Major General Mahmoud Farouk, Director of Giza Department, told Al-Masry Al-Youm an altercation took place on Sunday afternoon between a number of armed forces and police soldiers.

He denied that the altercation turned into a fight, adding other security forces intervened and contained the situation.

An official source at Giza Security Directorate said that the quarrel occurred after a member of the Police Department of Imbaba tried to corner his cycle of violence next to an armed forces tank and the soldiers refused to allow him.

The quarrel led to an altercation between soldiers of the armed forces and other police personnel, the source added.

The source mentioned that an army personnel fired tear gas to break up the fight and other senior police leaders intervened to contain the situation before it aggravated.

Military police personnel were dispatched to the area of the quarrel after it was ended for security and Major General Kamal al-Daly ordered an internal investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.

Pro-Morsy protesters clash with police Friday across Egypt, 2 dead, 8 injured
2014-02-08
[Egypt Independent] Security forces clashed with supporters of deposed president Mohammed Morsy on Friday in Giza and Fayoum, leaving one protester dead, according to a statement by the Health Ministry.

The Ministry said Ahmed Khaled Abdallah, 40, died as medics at the province's public hospital tried to save him. Eight others were maimed in Cairo, Giza and Fayoum during Friday festivities between police and Brotherhood protesters.

Youssef Taha Gabra, 14, was also reported to have died as a result of festivities in Delga, Minya, south of Egypt. Medical and official sources said he died on his way to the hospital, though the Health Ministry has not yet confirmed his death.

Police had shot tear gas at the march in Minya after alleged assaults from protesters in an attempt to disperse march by Morsy supporters.

In Fayoum, security also tossed in the slammer

seven demonstrators, allegedly with Molotov cocktails in their possession.

The festivities flared following a march by Moslem Brüderbund loyalists that sat on from the Mohammedan Youth Mosque, and where protesters chanted anti-police and army slogans.

Police shot tear gas after protesters shot BB guns and pelted stones at the forces.

In Ain Shams, east of Cairo, a number of pro-Moslem Brüderbund protesters reportedly threw Molotov cocktails at the police deputies' institute as they marched from al-Naam Square to the area. Police responded with tear gas.

Forces controlled the fire that caught at the institute.

Meanwhile in Imbaba, Giza hundreds also blocked al-Sahel Bridge, shooting off fireworks and setting car tires on fire. Police mobilized forces to confront the protests but no casualties were reported.

In Faisal, Giza, supporters of General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi clashed with Brotherhood supporters who rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against the army and police. The festivities left some protesters injured. Other demonstrators set on marches from al-Istiqama Mosque in Giza Square.

In Zeitoun, Cairo, police used tear gas to disperse a march by Morsy supporters.

[Egypt Independent] Giza prosecutors on Saturday ordered the detention of 56 Moslem Brüderbund protesters for 24 hours pending receipt of investigations by the Homeland Security regarding their involvement in the violent events that took place in Imbaba, Mohandeseen, Omraneya, Talbiya and Haram last Friday.

They are charged with joining a terrorist group that intends to disturb security and public peace, possession of firearms and explosives without license, using force against citizens, setting fire to police cars and attempted murder of coppers and citizens.

Two killed, dozens arrested as security forces disperse pro-Morsi rallies
2013-12-15
[Al Ahram] A 23-year old man was killed in the Egyptian city of Suez and another in Fayoum during festivities between security forces and defiant supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi

in Cairo on Friday.

The Suez emergency department announced that the man sustained a neck wound from live gunshot, passing away in the hospital hours after he sustained the injury. Another injured civilian, the department added, received a gunshot wound in the knee.

Clashes initially broke out in Suez between protesters and unidentified civilians, and the police later became involved.

In Fayoum, south of the capital, a 19-year-old man was rubbed out in festivities after recieving a gunshot in his chest and stomach.

Authorities have also confirmed that three coppers and three civilians were maimed during festivities between protesters and police in Alexandria and Fayoum, Al-Ahram's Arabic news site reported.

According to the report, one of the injured civilians sustained a live gunshot wound, while the others were maimed by birdshot.

Throughout the day on Friday, security forces jugged
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
at least 54 protesters during the dispersal of demonstrations in several Egyptian cities.

In the Cairo neighborhoods of Madinet Nasr, Imbaba, Maadi and Helwan, security forces fired teargas to disperse protests led by supporters of deposed president Mohammed Morsi, under the mandate of Egypt's recently enacted controversial protest law.

In the Nile Delta city of Ismailia, pro-Morsi protesters gathered in one of the city's main streets, chanting against the military and police, before being chased away by police forces.

The Pro-Legitimacy and Anti-Coup Coalition, Egypt's main Islamist alliance, called on its supporters to take to the streets on Friday in solidarity with protesting university students. A number of students have been killed recently during festivities with security forces on university campuses.

Since the beginning of the academic year in September, Egyptian universities have been at the heart of the unrest gripping the country since the 3 July ouster of former president Morsi amid mass popular protests.

Pro-Morsi students have organised near-daily protests to call for the former president's reinstatement and to denounce the arrest of fellow students in previous demonstrations.

Egypt's Brotherhood says 3 members injured in Warraq church attack
2013-10-26
[Al Ahram] Egypt's Moslem Brüderbund repeated their denial of any involvement in a recent church attack that left five dead, insisting the Archbishop of the church suggested that three Brotherhood members were maimed in the incident.

The Brotherhood condemned the incident amid accusations by the Islamist group's opponents that it took part in its planning. Investigations are still underway; testimony from a police conscript for the prosecution said there had been no security forces deployed at the church since August.

"The Church's priest asserted that three of the injured were members of the Moslem Brüderbund," the group said in a statement, reiterating that the Brotherhood's doctrine is one of peace not violence.

The priest, Justus Kamel, made the statement while commenting on the incident on private-owned Egyptian satellite television channel Al-Hayat earlier this week, saying the Brotherhood members were at the wedding to "congratulate their Christian friends."

The Brotherhood statement however refrained from mentioning the names of the injured.

Gunmen on cycle of violences attacked a wedding at the Virgin Mary Church of Warraq in Cairo's working class neighbourhood of Imbaba on Sunday, leaving five dead, among them two girls aged eight and twelve.

A Brotherhood-led alliance issued a statement following the attack condemning the police force's lax security and the crackdown launched on the group after Islamist president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
was ousted by the army in July amid mass protests against him.

The Brotherhood statement held the Interior Ministry responsible for "neglecting the security of Egyptian citizens, while busy stalking peaceful protesters."

In Friday's statement, the Brotherhood called the incident a "terrorist assault" and said it was surprised by media allegations that the group was connected to the incident.

Since Morsi's ouster and the deadly dispersal of two pro-Morsi sit-ins in August, a wave of anti-Coptic Christian attacks, mainly in Upper Egypt, have been carried out.

Some reports have blamed ultra-orthodox Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
for many of these attacks, after they accused Christians of colluding to remove Morsi from power.

The Warraq incident led to the largest corpse count in anti-Coptic attacks since Morsi's ouster.
