Eight dead and an estimated 100 people missing after the latest Nigeria boat accident
2024-01-17
[AFRICANEWS] Eight passengers were confirmed dead and an estimated 100 were missing after their overloaded boat capsized in north-central Nigeria, the emergency services said Tuesday.

It is the latest in a series of deadly boat accidents that increasingly point to regulatory failures.

The passengers were being conveyed from Niger state's Borgu district to a market in the neighbouring Kebbi state on Monday afternoon when the boat overturned in the Niger River, according to Niger State Emergency Management Agency front man Ibrahim Audu.

"The boat was overloaded so the strong wind affected them," Audu said.

He said the boat's capacity is 100 passengers but it was estimated to be carrying a much higher number, in addition to bags of grain, making it difficult to control when it began to sink.

Villagers were helping local divers and emergency officials to search for the missing passengers, many of whom were women, Audu said. He could not say how many people had survived.

US House passes pro-Israel measure 401-19, but growing number of Dems vote against
2023-04-26
Clearly a good many Democratic politicians are not ready to go on record with their real animus toward Israel in the face of the traditional American support of the Jewish state, or there actually is a pro-Israel silent majority in the Democratic party despite the loud noises made by a small number of of their membership.
[IsraelTimes] No’ votes more than double those against 2021 bill for Iron Dome funding; J Street protests resolution’s omission of backing for two-state solution but didn’t call to oppose it.

The US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to pass a resolution marking Israel’s 75th anniversary, heralding the importance of the US-Israel relationship and urging the expansion of the Abraham Accords.

H.Res.311 passed 401-19, with 18 progressive Democrats opposing the measure amid growing comfort within the party to take such public stances against the Jewish state, along with protests raised by the dovish J Street lobby group over the initiative’s lack of inclusion of support for a two-state solution.

Previous resolutions introduced every five years to mark Israeli Independence Day have included mentions of the two-state solution or peace with the Paleostinians. The Haaretz daily reported that Democratic congressional leadership sought to add such language but were rebuffed by Republicans, who have increasingly moved away from openly backing two states.

The 19 politicians who voted "no" were more than double the number of representatives who voted against a September 2021 bill to provide Israel with $1 billion for its Iron Dome missile defense system. That resolution passed 420-9.

While Tuesday’s resolution was far more symbolic than the 2021 initiative, both were seen as barometers of Congressional support for Israel, with the results on the latest bill indicating that backing has slightly waned.

Voting against Tuesday’s pro-Israel resolution were eight of the nine politicians who opposed the Iron Dome funding in 2021 — Democratic Representatives Cori Bush, Andre Carson, Chuy Garcia, Raul Grijalva, Ilhan Omar
...Somali-American Dem representative from Minnesota. She was apparently married to her brother and may be her own grandmaw on her mother's side...
, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie. (The ninth politician, Democratic representative Marie Newman, lost her reelection bid last year.)

Joining them were Democratic Representatives Jamaal Bowman, Mark Desaulnier, Jared Huffman, Pramila Jayapal, Hank Johnson, Summer Lee, Betty McCollum, Ilhan Omar, Mark Pocan, Alexandria Boom Boom Ocasio-Cortez
Dem Congressgirl from da Bronx in Noo Yawk and leader of the Mean Girl Caucus in Congress. One of the Great Minds of the 21st Century, she is known as much for her innaleck as for her dance moves. She is all in favor of socialism, even though she's fuzzy on the details. She was the inventor of the Green New Deal, though she doesn't talk about it much anymore...
, Delia Ramirez and Nydia Velazquez.

The legislation was co-sponsored by Republican Representatives Ann Wagner and Michael McCaul along with Democratic Representatives Kathy Manning and Brad Schneider, demonstrating sustained bipartisan support for Israel in an ever-polarized political climate in Washington.

Both Manning and Schneider made a point of stressing their support for the two-state solution in the floor debate ahead of the vote.

The text’s mention of support for the Abraham Accords avoided using the Biden administration talking point about the importance of leveraging Israel’s new relations with Arab states in order to advance peace with the Paleostinians.

The resolution "encourag[es] the expansion and strengthening of the Abraham Accords to urge other nations to normalize relations with Israel and ensure that existing agreements reap tangible security and economic benefits for the citizens of those countries and all peoples in the region."

J Street did not specifically urge politicians to vote against the bill but did share its concerns with members.

"We regret that the House resolution introduced to mark Israel’s landmark 75th anniversary omits key commitments and aspirations that have been central to the US-Israel relationship for decades," the group’s spokesperson Logan Bayroff told Jewish Insider.

"This anniversary should be a time — as has been the case with prior resolutions marking milestone anniversaries for Israel — when long-standing bipartisan consensus positions on Israel are reinforced, rather than excised to accommodate the Republican party’s growing rejection of them," Bayroff added.

AIPAC, on the other hand, lobbied in favor of the bill and hailed its passing.

Ga. Congressman Hank 'Roll Over' Johnson - 'Things Can be Planted' remains suspicious of Biden garage find
2023-01-13
[Gateway] Democrat Rep. Hank Johnson, the sub genius who previously claimed Guam will tip over, said the classified documents found at Joe Biden’s home may have been planted.

"I’m suspicious of the timing of it. I’m also aware of the fact that things can be planted on people — places and things can be planted — things can be planted in places and then discovered conveniently. That may be what has occurred here. I’m not ruling that out," Hank Johnson said of the classified documents found in Joe Biden’s garage.

Rep Hank 'Guam flip over' Johnson compares school board meeting attendees to Jan 6 rioters
2022-09-18
[Red State] Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) was immortalized in 2010 when he told the Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," during a hearing on a planned addition of U.S. forces to the U.S. territory of Guam.

To date, Guam has not capsized, but RedState will post breaking news as warranted.

Johnson, long known for his hyperbolic nonsense, on Friday claimed "MAGA Republicans" descended on school board meetings in a similar manner to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot during a committee hearing, as reported by Fox News. It got worse, as one might expect with this guy.

Progressive lawmakers offer unwitting path for Jan. 6 prisoners to sue federal government
2021-12-14
[JustTheNews] Some of the most progressive Democrats in Congress are supporting new legislation that could help an unexpected group: those who were arrested and imprisoned without trial for playing a role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Democratic Reps. Hank Johnson (Ga.)
...who once worried publicly about Guam tipping over..
and Jamie Raskin (Md.) on Wednesday reintroduced the Bivens Act, which would allow citizens to recover damages for constitutional violations committed against them by federal law enforcement officials.

The bill, which the lawmakers first introduced last year, seeks "to provide a civil remedy for an individual whose rights have been violated by a person acting under federal authority." It would do this by adding five words — "of the United States or" — to a longstanding provision enacted in 1871, known as Section 1983, which gives individuals the right to sue state or local officials who violate their civil and constitutional rights. The additional words would include federal officials in the statute.

The FBI, Justice Department, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and federal prison officials are among the law enforcement entities that would be held accountable under the legislation.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) introduced a companion bill in the Senate this week.

Supporters of the legislation argue that no statute, including Section 1983, currently gives individuals the right to sue federal officials who violate the Constitution. Johnson and Raskin said as much in a press release, pointing to the former Trump administration as reason to pass their bill.

While Johnson and Raskins framed their bill as a way to protect against the overreaches of the Trump administration, the legislation would incidentally offer a path to civil remedy for those imprisoned without trial for alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach who say they've been mistreated by federal authorities to sue.

Several Jan. 6 prisoners allege the FBI, Justice Department, and federal prison officials under the Biden administration have violated their civil and constitutional rights.

Thomas Caldwell, 66, for example, says he was arrested at his Virginia farm in January and interrogated for hours without being told what he was being charged with. Caldwell, a military veteran, never entered the Capitol building on Jan. 6 but spent well over a month in solitary confinement.

George Tanios, 40, says he had a similar experience at his West Virginia home in March, claiming federal agents wouldn't answer him when he asked why they were arresting him. He was imprisoned on charges related to the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick and remained in jail for months, despite the District of Columbia's chief medical examiner concluding Sicknick died of unrelated natural causes. According to Tanios, his business was devastated as a result of his arrest and imprisonment.

Christopher Worrell was also arrested and imprisoned for his involvement in the Capitol riot despite never entering the building. In October, a federal judge found D.C. Jail Warden Wanda Patten and D.C. Department of Corrections Director Quincy Booth in contempt of court for refusing to turn over records related to the care of Worrell, who suffers from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and had a broken hand. The judge referred the matter to the attorney general "for appropriate inquiry into potential civil rights violations of Jan. 6 defendants, as exemplified in this case."

Gina Carano Announces New Movie Project With Ben Shapiro

[EpochTimes] Former "Mandalorian" star Gina Carano, who was dropped by Disney-owned Lucasfilm earlier this week, said she will partake in a new movie project with the Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro.

Carano told news outlets: "The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams—to develop and produce my own film—come true. I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them."

The former MMA fighter-turned-actress will develop, produce, and appear in an upcoming film that the Daily Wire will release to its subscribers, according to a statement provided by the outlet to Deadline Hollywood. Details about the project are not clear.

Other than Lucasfilm, Carano’s agency UTA also dropped her after she shared a TikTok post saying the current divided political climate is similar to Nazi Germany, comparing conservatives to Jewish people.

Ossoff Promoted Chinese Propaganda Outlet After Stint as ‘National Security Aide'
2020-12-29
[FreeBeacon] Georgia Democratic Senate hopeful Jon Ossoff promoted a Chinese state-run media outlet that has rebuffed U.S. lawmakers' demands to register as a foreign agent.

Months after leaving Rep. Hank Johnson's (D., Ga.) office—where he spent five months serving as a "national security aide" with top-secret clearance—in August 2012, Ossoff urged his Twitter followers to read Xinhua News Agency, a Chinese Communist Party-run propaganda organ.
Full disclosure: Rantburg used to get some of our articles from the Xinhua website, before we found better sources.
The Democrat has struggled to fend off GOP senator David Perdue's criticism of his ties to China. In July, Ossoff quietly disclosed receiving a payment from a Chinese-backed media giant, but has since refused to release private financial information from his foreign film company, Insight TWI. In addition, Ossoff's father—who has bankrolled the Democrat's political career—met with Chinese "dignitaries" after commissioning a 60-foot yacht from a China-based shipbuilder tied to Communist Party Officials.

Founded in 1931, Xinhua News Agency is the largest media outlet in China and serves as the communist nation's primary state-run mouthpiece, though it boasts that it will never "yield to the pressure of ideological stigmatization and political bias" in its Twitter bio. The outlet was chastised by U.S. lawmakers in January after paying the social media giant to promote posts that attacked pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

The outlet rebuffed a 2018 Justice Department order to register as a foreign agent. The Trump administration's order followed a bipartisan appeal from senators Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) and Patrick Leahy (D., Vt.).

While another Chinese state-run outlet—China Global Television Network—went on to register as a foreign agent in February 2019, Xinhua News Agency has thus far refused.

Ossoff came under fire for misrepresenting his time working in Johnson's office during his failed 2017 congressional campaign. While the Democrat claimed that he spent five years as a "national security aide with top-secret clearance," Ossoff later admitted that he worked full-time for Johnson for just two years and held top-secret clearance for only five months.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administration Law will hold a hearing on Wednesday, which will feature testimony from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

This arises as Republicans and Democrats have become increasingly critical of the big tech's dominance on the Internet; however, big tech companies; donations to members of the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust may undermine potential efforts to find antitrust solutions against the power and influence of these big tech companies.

The tech company donated:

Republicans:
$0 to House Judiciary members that will speak during Wednesday's hearing.

Democrats:
$2,800 to Raskin
$198 to Jayapal
$2,033 to McBath

As these companies prepare to testify before the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Brendan Carr noted that big tech companies wield influence similar to that of a country.

He wrote in an op-ed, "A handful of corporations with state-like influence now shape everything from the information we consume to the places where we shop. These corporate behemoths are not merely exercising market power; they are abusing dominant positions."
Legal Federal bribery. The largest reason for term limits.

Gosar brought a bill today to do just that...they should be designated a publisher, lose their Section 230 protections. Trump would sign it. I doubt Piglosi would let it get through The House, though.

Ro Khanna Backs Nabliah Islam, Dubbed AOC of Atlanta, In Contested GA Primary
2020-02-08
[The Intercept] NABILAH ISLAM, the 30-year-old daughter of Bangladeshi immigrants, is one of six Democratic candidates vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Rob Woodall, a five-term GOP incumbent who entered office as part of the 2010 tea party wave. Islam is regularly touted in the press as "Atlanta’s AOC," and is trying to demonstrate that a populist message can work in this working class district.

California Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., is breaking with the party establishment and endorsing Islam, becoming the first sitting member of Congress to rally behind the young contender. And, despite previously working for establishment players like Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign and the Democratic National Committee, Islam has secured an endorsement from the Metro Atlanta chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. Occupy Democrats and Matriarch, a political action committee dedicated to electing women from working-class and low-income backgrounds to Congress, have endorsed her as well.

"I was inspired by her candidacy," Khanna told The Intercept. "She is someone who personally understands the need for Medicare for All. She can help bridge Clinton and Sanders supporters to expand and build our progressive coalition. As a woman of color of Muslim faith, she reflects the vibrancy and diversity of her district and symbolizes the New South."

Islam’s platform includes policies with growing popular support, such as Medicare for All and the Green New Deal. This week, about 6 in 10 Democrats at the Iowa caucuses reported supporting the elimination of private health insurance to establish a single-payer health care system, the Washington Post reported.

Her biggest opponent in the primary is Carolyn Bourdeaux, a college professor who narrowly lost to Woodall in 2018, and has previously expressed opposition to Medicare for All. During her 2018 campaign, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she said she believes in "fixing" the Affordable Care Act and "providing a public health insurance option." Bourdeaux doesn’t currently list any policy positions on her campaign website.

The state’s 7th Congressional District, which includes Atlanta’s northern suburbs, has become increasingly diverse over the past few years and now has a population that is predominantly people of color. Demographic changes, in addition to Bourdeaux coming within roughly 400 votes of winning in the midterms, prompted the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to make the district a top target for the 2020 cycle. In 2018, it added Bourdeaux to their "red-to-blue" program.

So far, Islam’s campaign has out-raised many of her six Democratic opponents, including two state legislators who are running, taking in about $400,000. According to OpenSecrets, Bourdeaux’s campaign has raised about $1,154,686 and has $863,041 cash on hand. Bourdeaux has also won endorsements from Democratic Georgia Reps. John Lewis and Hank Johnson, and former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young, all of whom supported her 2018 campaign.

Islam, who quit her job to campaign full-time and is living on her savings, recently made headlines for petitioning the Federal Election Commission to let her use campaign funds to pay for health care, arguing that it would make running for office more accessible to working-class people.

Democratic lawmakers insist Durham resign
2019-12-26
[CT] Washington ‐ Congressional Democrats who fear Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham may be conducting a partisan investigation into the origins of the FBI’s probe into Russian meddling in U.S. elections are calling on him to resign.

Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., has written Attorney General William Barr and Durham, saying "neither of you possess the integrity necessary to serve in the Department of Justice."

Signed by 10 of Johnson’s House Democratic colleagues‐but none from Connecticut ‐ the letter’s demand for Barr’s resignation is not unique.

In May, for instance, Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal said Barr should "probably resign" because, the senator said, the attorney general had mislead the public about the conclusions of former special counsel Robert Mueller’s report into Russian meddling.

But calls for Durham’s resignation are new.

The letter ‐ signed by Johnson, Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., William Lacy Clay, D-Mo., Jared Huffman, D-Calif., Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and five other progressive Democrats ‐ said Barr and Durham should be ousted because they "inappropriately interfered in independent Department of Justice investigations and intentionally used (their) positions to mislead the American public in defense of President Donald J. Trump."

Democrat Hank 'Tip Over' Johnson Suggests Attorney General Barr May Have ‘Obstructed Justice'
2019-04-06
[Breitbart] Some Democrats in Congress are suggesting that Attorney General William Barr broke the law in announcing the principal conclusions of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report last week, according to a report.

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) ‐ who once asked during a hearing whether Guam could tip over and capsize if more Marines were added, suggested Friday that Barr’s handling of the report may have "obstructed justice."

"If it turns out that he has obstructed justice by how he has handled the Mueller report that will be a deep stain on his legacy," said Rep. Hank Johnson, member of the House Judiciary Committee, according to Politico.

Barr, in a letter to leaders of the Judiciary Committee, wrote that the special counsel did not establish any collusion, conspiracy, or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia.

He also said Mueller declined to take a position on whether the president obstructed the investigation, which he said left him to make the decision. Barr said he, in consultation with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, concluded Trump did not obstruct the special counsel investigation.

Democrats have slammed Barr’s characterizations of Mueller’s principal conclusions, and demanded that he release the report by April 2. Barr notified them that he intended to release the report by mid-April, if not earlier, as he scrubbed the report of four categories of legally protected information.
