Iraqi forces resume advance in old Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government troops engaged in intense fighting with Islamic State members on Sunday as they continued incursions into IS’s last havens in western Mosul’s Old City.

Rudaw agency said army warplanes bombarded two IS locations in Zanjili district, south of the strategic Old City, the group’s last holdout in western Mosul.

Fierce encounters continue also at neighboring al-Sihha, where troops regained control by 70 percent, with militants encircled inside the Old City, according to the Kurdish-run network, which added that IS fighters attacked the troops with seven booby-trapped cars.

Iraqi commanders had predicted the battle against IS in Mosul to end before the holy month of Ramadan, which started Saturday.

Earlier this month, the Iraqi command said it moved towards the Old City from the northwest, having besieged the area for weeks from the south.

The Old City, with its narrowly structured alleyways, and with hundreds of thousands of civilians believed to be stranded inside, was the place where IS declared the establishment of its rule in Iraq in 2014.

The United Nations says it expects 200.000 civilians to flee the area as encounters heat up.

29 ISIS Bad Guys die in Baaj airstrikes

Baaj (IraqiNews.com) Twenty-nine Islamic State militants were killed in an airstrike launched by the Iraqi troops in Baaj town, western Nineveh, according to the Iraqi army.

“The army jets killed 29 IS members and destroyed a booby-trapped container, two vehicles and a third with gun installed on it while backing the paramilitary troops and joint troops in Mosul city and regions located west of it,” Colonel Mohamed al-Malki, spokesperson of the army airforce.

“The joint troops resume its operations that target liberating the remaining IS-held regions in Nineveh,” Malki added.

Close to the Iraqi-Iranian borders, Baaj is considered an important IS stronghold.

While major offensives take place in Mosul by Iraqi troops, backed by U.S.-led coalition, other offensives are launched by the paramilitary troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi to liberate neighboring regions in Nineveh province.

Last week, the paramilitary troops launched a second phase of operations launched earlier this month to complete the liberation of villages in the vicinity of Qairawan, freed on Tuesday, ahead of advancing toward Baaj, west of Mosul city.

An offensive was launched by PMUs on May 12, which resulted in clearing of Qairawan region, a main Islamic State bastion in west of Mosul which links between Tal Afar town and the Syrian borders, from IS militants on Tuesday.

20 die in airstrikes in old Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Forty-five civilians were killed and injured in airstrikes that hit Mosul’s Old City early on Sunday, news reports mentioned.

A local source told Al-Furat Al-Ikhbari news website that twenty civilians were killed, while more than 25 others were wounded in an airstrike launched by the international coalition led by the U.S. at al-Farouq street and Hadiret al-Sadah, north of the Old City.

The Old City is home of the ancient Grand Nuri Mosque, from which the group’s Supreme Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave a famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the ‘caliphate’

Previously in May, the Joint Operations Command said more than 16,000 IS fighters were killed since start of Mosul operations in October.

Iraqi commanders say they at least 90 percent of territories in western Mosul is under Iraqi troops control, predicting to retake the city before the end of May. Only two districts besides the Old City are under IS control.

Iraqi forces have been sweeping through northwestern neighborhoods over the past few weeks in a way to invade the strategic Old City, after finding it hard to invade from the south.

The eastern side of Mosul was retaken in January after three months of battles. Another major offensive was launched in February to recapture the western flank of the city.

Iraqi militia captures village in western Mosul

Baaj (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi paramilitary troops recaptured another village on Sunday as they continue to clear Islamic State holdouts west of Mosul and near the borders with Syria.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said on its media website that troops took over al-Qahtaniya area, north of Baaj, and were combing the area to entirely eliminate militants.

PMUs, an alliance of more than 60 mostly Shia militias, are recognized by the government as a national force under the Prime Minister’s command. They have been actively engaged in the campaign against Islamic State militants in Nineveh’s western regions.

Al-Hashd has recaptured several villages since it launched an operation earlier this month to clear Qairawan and neighboring Baaj from IS. A top leader said last week Qairawan was totally liberated. Al-Hashd had said the region became isolated from Mosul and from IS havens in Syria.

Their campaign runs simultaneously with government troops operations in Mosul, Islamic State’s largest stronghold in Iraq. Security forces are currently invading the last districts held by IS in western Mosul, targeting the strategic Old City where IS first declared the inception of its proclaimed “caliphate”.

Iraqi commanders were recently quoted predicting the campaign to realize victory within a few days.

Syrian troops down 14 drones operated by militants
2016-11-10
[Iran Press TV] Syrian army soldiers and allied fighters have shot down 14 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operated by foreign-backed forces of Evil in the southwestern province of Dara’a.

An unidentified military source said on Wednesday that the drones intended to carry out reconnaissance missions and target a number of Syrian army positions.

The development came amid latest gains made by the Syrian forces against Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
elements operating in the Arab country.

Also on Wednesday, the Syrian army units and allies wrested control of al-Hikma school on the western outskirts of Aleppo.

An unnamed military source said that the advance came after festivities with terrorists, mostly from Jabhat Fateh al-Sham

Front. The fighting inflicted dozens of casualties on the forces of Evil and destroyed their equipment.

Elsewhere, the Syrian troops foiled an attack on a number of military posts to the east of Hadir on the northern outskirts of Quneitra province. The fighting killed scores of the forces of Evil and destroyed their vehicles, some of which were equipped with heavy machine guns.

A number of other forces of Evil further bit the dust after another Syrian army unit targeted gatherings of forces of Evil and their supply routes in the countryside of Quneitra.

Clashes were also reported with Jabhat Fateh al-Sham in Mashara in eastern Quneitra.

Meanwhile,
...back at the saloon, Butch got the bill for the damage caused by the fist fight, the mirror broken in the shootout, and drinks for everyone......
another military source said the Syrian forces had destroyed a ISIS vehicle equipped with a heavy machine gun, a mortar launcher and a bulldozer in al-Tharda Mountain and along the eastern barricade of Dayr al-Zawr Airport.

The airport’s garrison targeted ISIS hideouts with artillery fire in Dayr al-Zawr’s al-Orfi neighborhood, killing nine forces of Evil and obliterating their arms and munitions.

Since March 2011, Syria has been hit by militancy it blames on some Western states and their regional allies. Backed by Russian air cover, the Syrian military is engaged in an operation to rid the country of ISIS and other terrorist groups.

Syrian rebels threaten to attack Druze
2016-09-14
[ARA News] HOMS – Islamist rebel factions threatened to attack the Druze minority in Syria’s southern Quneitra Governorate, after accusing them of supporting the Syrian regime, local sources reported on Tuesday.

Islamist rebels of the Qadissiyat al-Janoub coalition vowed in a statement to attack the Druze-populated town of Hadir if the residents refused to support the fight against the Syrian army forces in the Quneitra Governorate.

“The pro-Assad forces have imposed a siege on rebel-held areas in Quneitra, where thousands of civilians are suffering starvation. Our fight against the regime will continue until breaking this siege and defeating pro-Assad militias in the governorate. Thus, we call on the Druze community to cooperate with us and allow our fighters to enter al-Hadir town and create a supply route; otherwise, we’ll be obliged to open the route by force,” rebel factions of the Qadissiyat al-Janoub said in a statement.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011, the Druze religious minority in southern Syria has taken a neutral position towards all parties to conflict. Yet, hundreds of Druze soldiers are still fighting alongside the Syrian regime’s army against the armed opposition.
President Assad doesn't require them to convert, pay crippling jizya, or die, so the choice is easy.
“We are a peaceful minority group, and we tried to remain neutral throughout this conflict to protect our families. However, the Islamist groups accused us of supporting the Assad regime,” Druze citizen and rights activist Wissam al-Amir told ARA News in Quneitra.

“We’ve received many threats from the Islamists. The people of al-Hadir town are now terrified after the recent threat from the Qadissiyat al-Janoub’s fighters,” al-Amir said.

2016-05-30
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Dozens of civilian casualties were reported on Sunday after the Syrian regime’s warplanes launched several airstrikes on the Tall al-Daman town south of Aleppo, activists reported.

The Syrian air force hit a popular marketplace and residential buildings in Tall al-Daman with at least six airstrikes on Sunday evening.

“More than twenty people were killed and dozens more wounded in the airstrikes,” rights activist Ali Rihawi told ARA News in the targeted Tall al-Daman town.

“Volunteers of the civil defence are still searching for victims under the rubble,” the source said.

Tall al-Daman and its suburbs are held by the Syrian opposition forces.

“This town has hosted hundreds of displaced people from the war-torn villages of Khan Touman, al-Iss and al-Hadir. Yet the killing machine of the Assad regime has followed them to Tall al-Daman,” opposition spokesman Mustafa Suleiman told ARA News in Aleppo.

“Today the town [Tall al-Daman] has witnessed another massacre by pro-Assad warplanes. We promise to continue our operations against pro-Assad forces to prevent further bloodshed among innocent civilians,” Suleiman said.

Bomb Kills at Least 30 in Damascus Province
2013-09-28
[An Nahar] A boom-mobile killed at least 30 people on Friday in the town of Rankus north of Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called a hurried meeting of his closest advisors. It was to be his last. They discussed the officers's efficiency rating system...
the Observatory said 11 people were killed in a regime air raid in northern Aleppo province.

"At least 30 people were killed and dozens more injured in a boom-mobile blast that targeted worshipers at the Khalid Bin Walid mosque in Rankus," the Observatory said.

It added that regime forces shelled the area afterwards.

Rankus, some 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Damascus, is a Sunni town that backs the Sunni-dominated opposition to the government of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...

Local activists called on residents to avoid gathering for fear of additional attacks in the town, which has regularly been the scene of fighting between rebels and regime forces.

State news agency SANA reported the blast. Without elaborating, it said the kaboom was the result of "a dispute between terrorist groups over the division of weapons and ammunition."

A video of the aftermath of the blast, filmed from a distance, showed a large cloud of black smoke and flames rising from a site next to a mosque.

In Aleppo province, the Observatory reported nine rebel fighters, a woman and a child were killed in a regime air raid on the village of Hadir.

More than 110,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in March 2011, according to the Observatory.

The violence, which began with peaceful protests against the regime of President Bashir al-Assad, has also displaced millions inside Syria and forced at least two million to seek refuge abroad.

Man shot dead in Turkey over smoking ban
2009-08-02
[Al Arabiya Latest] A restaurant owner in southwest Turkey was shot dead after he tried to prevent his customers from smoking to comply with a new law on the use of tobacco indoors, Hurriyet daily said on Thursday.
Hey, wanna put that butt out?
No.
BANG...

A fight broke out after Hidir Karayigit, 46, ordered a group of customers to extinguish their cigarettes when they began smoking at his "meyhane," a traditional restaurant that serves alcohol, in the town of Saruhanli, Hurriyet said.
Hadir obviously needed training in customer service. But he won't anymore...
One of the customers shot Karayigit four times after he took away the group's cigarettes, said witness Hamza Havutcu, Karayigit's business partner who was also shot and wounded.
Looks like Hamza's not the brightest bulb on the tree.
Turkey's government on July 19 introduced a nationwide ban on indoor smoking, including bars and restaurants, despite the fact that half of Turks aged between the ages of 15 and 49 smoke; one of the highest rates in the world. "I'm deeply saddened that the first smoking-ban murder occurred in our town," Saruhanli Mayor Veli Yalcin told Hurriyet. "They either shouldn't have outlawed smoking or they should have outlawed alcohol along with smoking."

US frees Iranian prisoner held in Iraq
2007-12-20
BAGHDAD - The United States has released one of about 10 Iranian prisoners it is holding in Iraq, US forces and the Iranian embassy said on Wednesday. The embassy named the prisoner as Hayder Alami, while US forces gave his name as Hadir Alwai Mohammed>Hadir Alwai Mohammed. Both said the prisoner had been held since July 2004 and was freed on Tuesday.

The US detention of Iranians in Iraq is one of the issues dividing the two countries. The United States freed nine Iranian prisoners on Nov. 9 and said at the time that it had held 20. A US military spokeswoman said US forces were still holding “approximately 10” Iranians after Tuesday’s release.

Five of the Iranians that US forces have held have been a particular bone of contention, because Teheran said they were diplomats while Washington said they aided militants. Two of them were among those freed on Nov. 9.

Female terror cell found in W. Bank
2006-11-08
The Shin Bet uncovered a female terrorist network which operated in the West Bank in August and September, it was released for publication on Tuesday. The women, from the Islamic Jihad movement, were allegedly affiliated with two terror cells - in Kafr Nima and Kafr Ein - which were reportedly responsible for several shooting attacks in the Ramallah area and for setting up an explosives laboratory in the city.

One of the women arrested, Wadaha Fakhaa, 34, is suspected of transferring funds to one of the cells. Fakhaah, who heads one of the Islamic Jihad offices in Ramallah, was arrested on August 3, and told her interrogators that she had received money from the organization's headquarters in Syria, which she then passed on to fund terror cells via two other female Islamic Jihad activists who acted as couriers. The suspected couriers, Havah Hamidaat and Palastin Zobah, both 21, worked in the Islamic Jihad offices in Ramallah that deals with the movement's prisoners. They were arrested on August 20, and confessed to the charges.

In addition to the two couriers, Fakhah was aided by several Islamic Jihad operatives from Ramallah, who were used to channel funds from Syria to terrorist groups. Two of the operatives, Afat Halifa, 21, and Zahiyah Goanma, 40, were arrested by the IDF and the Shin Bet in September and told their interrogators that they had each received a commission of 100 dollars for all the money transfers they helped to perform. The funds were channeled to fund Islamic Jihad terrorist attacks.

The sixth woman arrested was Raanah Hadir, 26, who allegedly led Islamic Jihad's student wing at Hebron University. Hadir is also suspected of being active in channeling money to terrorist groups and to families of suicide bombers.
