Police yesterday also detained 11 people for their alleged involvement in the clash. Amir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said no case had been filed till filing of the report at 7:53pm. Two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh personnel had remained deployed at different spots in the upazila from 12:00noon to ward off further violence, Executive Magistrate Bijen Banarji said. On Saturday, at least 50 people were maimed in several festivities between the supporters of Sabuj and Abdul Jalil, member of the AL Sreepur upazila unit, centring on the upcoming upazila polls slated for March 15. Mostafizur Rahman Bulbul, general secretary of Sreepur upazila AL, said Jalil was picked up as the chairman candidate at the grassroots. However, facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable... Azmat Ullah Khan, general secretary of the AL district unit, said Sobuj had been chosen as the party candidate by the central committee. Meanwhile, ...back at the wrecked scow, Agent 49 felt gingerly for his head. It was still there. He had been hoping differently... a Jubo League ... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League... leader along with two of his supporters was held with a firearm in Savar yesterday while he was engaged in a clash with workers of a business firm over jhut business (garment waste), our Savar correspondent reports. On information, police rushed to the spot and held Sohel along with two others with a firearm. Rasel Sheikh, assistant superintendent of Savar police circle, said a general diary had been recorded following the incident. Fresh attack on Hindus |
2013-03-23 |
![]() In another incident, unidentified criminals set fire to a temple in sadar upazila of Gazipur district early yesterday, damaging four idols. In Lalmonirhat, a gang of 10 went to the house of freedom fighter Amulya Chandra Roy, 62, around 9:00pm on Thursday and started beating him indiscriminately, reported our correspondent in the district, quoting police. The attackers expeditiously departed at a goodly pace quickly. None of the victims or community leaders would say anything about the attackers. Speaking in return for anonymity, some locals said the neighbourhood is surrounded by Jamaat strongholds and that Jamaat-Shibir men had a hand in the attack. Abu Bakkar Siddique Shyamol, an aide to Motahar Hossain, state minister for primary and mass education and local politician, said the anti-Liberation forces might have been behind the attack to create panic among the Hindu community. The ruling Awami League would bear the medical expenses of those injured, he added. A correspondent from Gazipur reports: Keshurita Maddhyapara Shree Shree Laxmimata temple in sadar upazila was torched around 3:00am yesterday. Four idols were damaged in the arson attack. Bigots foil Ahmadiyya convention |
2011-02-07 |
[Bangla Daily Star] In the wake of protests from religious bigots, Gazipur district administration yesterday prevented the 87th annual convention of Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat slapping section-144 in and around the venue. Armed police were deployed at Bahadurpur Scout Training Camp where over 8,000 followers of Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat gathered for the three-day annual convention. Many of them broke down in tears hearing that they had to leave without taking part. "Our democratic rights have been taken away due to threats from some madrasa people," said Mir Mobasher Ali, a member of the convention organising committee. "But we are respectful to the law, so we have accepted the government's order," he said. According to Mizanur Rahman, additional superintendent of police Gazipur, a group of disgruntled locals presented a memorandum to the district administration yesterday demanding that the permit for the convention be revoked. The SP said Mawlana Mostafa, Mawlana Sharfuddin and Mufti Ataur Rahman were present among others. The district administration revoked the permit. And when violence was imminent, the authorities decided to impose section-144 in two square kilometres surrounding the venue, he said. Section-144 does not allow any kind of public gathering. Thousands of people were stuck inside the venue after the declaration of section-144, Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat leaders said. Over 3,000 people coming from different parts of the country also had to return, they added. According to Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat leaders, they rented Bahadurpur Scout Training Camp for three days. The location was picked since it was away from locality so problems with local religious bigots could be averted, they said. The programme, usually held at their national headquarters in Bakshibazar, was moved to Gazipur to accommodate more people. For over a decade, followers of Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat have been facing abuse and aggression of religious bigots across the country. Many of their houses have been looted from time to time and some have even been killed. |
