2016-09-11
[Dhaka Tribune] Members of RAB 1 detained Gazipur district unit chief of banned turban outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team Rashedul Islam alias Swapan and his accomplice Biplob Hossain alias Huzaifa from Chaurasta area on Saturday morning.

At a press briefing at the RAB 1 office, Commanding Officer Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud said the duo worked in the garments industry. Later they became affiliated with AQIS (al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent) through one Abdul Quddus, a leader of Ansarullah’s Dhaka regional unit.

The duo later took oath to carry out jihad in the name of al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodx al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra...
The RAB spokesperson said that the detainees admitted to hatching a plot to attack Kashimpur Jail in a bid to free turbans, including Ansarullah chief Jasim Uddin Rahmani. They also planned to snatch him on the way to court.

Two more Ansarullah members including a woman were also identified, RAB claims. The woman wanted to donate Tk10 lakh to buy arms for the group.

According to RAB, they all are followers of Tamim Al Adnani, one of the three top leaders of Ansarullah now staying in Malaysia.

The government banned Ansarullah on May 25 last year for their involvement in series of attacks on secularists and war crimes trial campaigners linked to the 2013 Shahbagh movement. After the ban, the group is renamed as Ansar Al Islam and believed to be representing AQIS in Bangladesh.

... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
the two Awami League men who were seen brandishing firearms during Saturday's clash between the party's two factions in Sreepur of Gazipur.

Two shotguns were recovered from their possessions.

Abdul Baten, superintendent of police in Gazipur, said this at a press briefing at his office around 6:15pm yesterday.

The arrestees -- Shajahan alias Kamrul, 40, and Masum Khan, 43 -- are supporters of upazila chairman candidate Iqbal Hossain Sabuj, also organising secretary of the Gazipur district AL.

Police yesterday also detained 11 people for their alleged involvement in the clash.

Amir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said no case had been filed till filing of the report at 7:53pm.

Two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh personnel had remained deployed at different spots in the upazila from 12:00noon to ward off further violence, Executive Magistrate Bijen Banarji said.

On Saturday, at least 50 people were maimed in several festivities between the supporters of Sabuj and Abdul Jalil, member of the AL Sreepur upazila unit, centring on the upcoming upazila polls slated for March 15.

Mostafizur Rahman Bulbul, general secretary of Sreepur upazila AL, said Jalil was picked up as the chairman candidate at the grassroots.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
Azmat Ullah Khan, general secretary of the AL district unit, said Sobuj had been chosen as the party candidate by the central committee.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, Agent 49 felt gingerly for his head. It was still there. He had been hoping differently...

When workers of Asa were busy loading their trucks with jhut as usual, Sohel and his supporters attacked them, leaving five of the workers injured.

On information, police rushed to the spot and held Sohel along with two others with a firearm.

Rasel Sheikh, assistant superintendent of Savar police circle, said a general diary had been recorded following the incident.

"The firearm has licence, but none can use it to threaten anyone," he said.

Fresh attack on Hindus
2013-03-23
[Bangla Daily Star] At least 15 Hindus, including a freedom fighter and three women, were beaten up in a hate attack on their neighbourhood in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat on Thursday night.

In another incident, unidentified criminals set fire to a temple in sadar upazila of Gazipur district early yesterday, damaging four idols.

In Lalmonirhat, a gang of 10 went to the house of freedom fighter Amulya Chandra Roy, 62, around 9:00pm on Thursday and started beating him indiscriminately, reported our correspondent in the district, quoting police.

As family members and neighbours went to his rescue, they too were badly beaten up. The injured were admitted to Hatibandha upazila health complex.

The attackers expeditiously departed at a goodly pace quickly.

None of the victims or community leaders would say anything about the attackers.

Speaking in return for anonymity, some locals said the neighbourhood is surrounded by Jamaat strongholds and that Jamaat-Shibir men had a hand in the attack.

Abu Bakkar Siddique Shyamol, an aide to Motahar Hossain, state minister for primary and mass education and local politician, said the anti-Liberation forces might have been behind the attack to create panic among the Hindu community.

The ruling Awami League would bear the medical expenses of those injured, he added.

Tapas Kumar Sarker, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha Police Station, told The Daily Star the police were working to identify and arrest the attackers.

A correspondent from Gazipur reports: Keshurita Maddhyapara Shree Shree Laxmimata temple in sadar upazila was torched around 3:00am yesterday.

Four idols were damaged in the arson attack. Locals rushed to the scene and put out the blaze before it could wreak more damage.

Gazipur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fouzia Rahman has visited the spot.

SM Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Joydevpur Police Station, said they were looking into the matter.

Bigots foil Ahmadiyya convention
2011-02-07
[Bangla Daily Star] In the wake of protests from religious bigots, Gazipur district administration yesterday prevented the 87th annual convention of Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat slapping section-144 in and around the venue.

Armed police were deployed at Bahadurpur Scout Training Camp where over 8,000 followers of Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat gathered for the three-day annual convention.

Many of them broke down in tears hearing that they had to leave without taking part.

"Our democratic rights have been taken away due to threats from some madrasa people," said Mir Mobasher Ali, a member of the convention organising committee.

"But we are respectful to the law, so we have accepted the government's order," he said.

According to Mizanur Rahman, additional superintendent of police Gazipur, a group of disgruntled locals presented a memorandum to the district administration yesterday demanding that the permit for the convention be revoked.

The SP said Mawlana Mostafa, Mawlana Sharfuddin and Mufti Ataur Rahman were present among others.

The district administration revoked the permit. And when violence was imminent, the authorities decided to impose section-144 in two square kilometres surrounding the venue, he said.

Section-144 does not allow any kind of public gathering.

Thousands of people were stuck inside the venue after the declaration of section-144, Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat leaders said.

Over 3,000 people coming from different parts of the country also had to return, they added.

According to Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat leaders, they rented Bahadurpur Scout Training Camp for three days. The location was picked since it was away from locality so problems with local religious bigots could be averted, they said.

The programme, usually held at their national headquarters in Bakshibazar, was moved to Gazipur to accommodate more people.

For over a decade, followers of Ahmadiyya Mohammedan Jamaat have been facing abuse and aggression of religious bigots across the country. Many of their houses have been looted from time to time and some have even been killed.

Drug peddler killed in Rab 'encounter'
A drug peddler was killed in an encounter with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at a residential hotel in the city yesterday morning.
Not even a commie, perhaps they needed a 'encounter' to keep qualified
He was identified as Raihan Ahmed Nahid, 30, of Joydevpur in Gazipur district.

According to a Rab press release, four drug peddlers were arrested along with 1000 bottles of phensidyl from a Dhaka-bound microbus in Nawdapara area of the city in the early hours of Sunday.
Phensidyl is a codine-based cough medicine. Drug of choice for Bangla teenagers
They are Sohrab Hossain of Rampura in Dhaka, Babul of Rajshahi, and Jasim and Belal of Comilla.
Grabbed the dealers and had them give up their supplier
On their confessional statements, the members of the elite force raided Hotel Classic at around 1:15am to arrest Nahid.
Just another episode of "COPS - Joydevpur"
The Rab men knocked at the door of room no 305, but Nahid did not respond.
"Candygram"
Minutes later he opened the door and fired on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate.
"Youse will never take me alive, coppers!"
"OK"
Nahid received bullets in the head and died instantly.
Not even time for "Rosebud"

The Rab members also arrested three accomplices of the drug peddler at the hotel. They are Jandar Ali, Ershad and Pradip of Bagha upazila in Rajshahi.
A local pistol and two bullets were recovered from the hotel room where Nahid was staying.
We assume this will be booked as the weapon Nahid "fired" on the cops with. They'd never plant a pistol on a dead drug dealer, right?
Nahid was an accused in 10 cases including one for murder, the press release said.
And now, "He's dead, Jim"

Young man dies in custody
A young man held by Rapid Action Battalion with a pipe gun 14 days ago died of a cardiac arrest on Sunday, police said.
Technically when your heart stops beating it is a cardiac arrest
Saiful Islam, 35, was arrested from Angtipara village in Mithapukur upazila while preparing for a robbery on the night of September 4.
I thought he was a "young man"?
He was handed over to the police and later the court sent him to prison.
Prison can be bad for your health
Saiful died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

... who hit 'alt-F6' on his keyboard ...
... member of the elite forces arrested Kosai Dulal from a Dhaka bound passenger bus near Kaliakoir bridge under Gazipur district at about 3.00 pm on Saturday.
"Kosai! Whatchadoin' onna bus? Why not travel in comfort wit us!"
Immediately after arresting him, RAB took Kosai Dulal to Adabor area located at road no-10 for arresting his associates and recovering firearms from his possession.
Kosai didn't get the reference to 'road number 10' but that's okay ...
When RAB member along with the criminal Kosai Dulal reached at road no-10 area under Adabor police station, the armed hoodlums swooped on them and started firing gunshots at about 2.45 am on Sunday.

"Hey Dr. Quincy! Didn't know you moved to the DMCH morgue!"
"Yeah, it was time for Sam to set up his own shop. Stack that one over there."

Both rounds coming from the back of Kosai's head ...
RAB claimed Kosai Dulal was wanted on twelve systems in four criminal cases including murder, mugging, hijacking and toll collection in different police stations, RAB sources said.
I'm guessing his mother didn't love him anymore ...

Bangla: Planner of Gazipur blasts nabbed
2005-12-06
The mastermind of the deadly suicide bomb attacks on Gazipur Bar Library and in front of the gate of the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC’s) office on November 29 and December 1 respectively, that killed 11 people and injured over 90, was arrested with bomb-making materials from the house of a former intelligence personnel yesterday.
Something wrong with this surprise meter...
A contingent of Gazipur police led by police super Atiqul Islam conducted the raid at a house belonging to a former officer of National Security Intelligence (NSI), and arrested Wahiduddin alias Jewel (25) and his wife Swapna (19) along with their two-and-half-year-old son Khalid from their rented Telipara residence near Chourasta in Gazipur town at around 3:45am yesterday, police sources said .
You gotta watch those two-year-olds. They can be vicious...
Police arrested Jewel following the statement of two Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) cadres Akash and Mintu, who were arrested from Chittagong for their alleged involvement in the suicide bombings at Chittagong court premises. Police seized some bomb-making materials including iron rings used in fishing nets, volters, magnets, wires, compass, flask, springs, sand and pieces of glass from the house. Police also picked up the house caretaker Moniruddin (32) and his wife for questioning. The owner of the house Nesaruddin, who was a NSI personnel, told police that he did not know anything about the activities of the JMB operative as he (Jewel) rented his house two months ago identifying himself a cloth trader, police sources said.
"No, no! Certainly not!"
When contacted, Gazipur police told The Independent that they arrested Jewel while he was making bombs. Police also arrested six JMB cadres from different parts of Gazipur following Jewel’s statement and the arrested six cadres were taken on police remand for interrogation, police sources said. Police sources said, the local people did not know anything about the JMB commander’s activities as his house was covered with curtain in accordance with the edicts of Islam.
Convenient, those edicts, aren't they?
The high officials of police are now questioning Jewel at Gazipur Detective Branch (DB) office about his involvement in the suicide bomb attacks in Gazipur. A highly placed source in the DB police told this correspondent yesterday that the two suicide bomb attacks on Bar Library of Gazipur and in front of the gate of Deputy Commissioner’s (DC’s) office on November 29 and December 1, were carried out under his (Jewel) supervision. In the attacks 10 persons including four lawyers were killed and over 90 persons were injured. During the interrogation, the JMB commander told police that he was producing two more bombs for carrying out further suicide bomb attacks on December 6, the source added.
They must have asked him very nicely for him to give that kind of detail...
Quoting Jewel the source said that he (Jewel) made the bombs which were used in the two suicide bomb attacks in Gazipur on November 29 and December 1 and he gave these bombs to the two members of JMB suicide squad for attacking the lawyers and the DC of Gazipur district. Intelligence sources said, the arrested Jewel who is a commander of JMB in Gazipur district disclosed scores of names of JMB suicide squad members and the locations, where they are now staying. But the source declined to make public the names and the locations. During the interrogation Jewel said that hundreds of JMB suicide squad members are staying scattered in Dhaka and its adjoining districts to carry out suicide bomb attacks, a reliable source in DB said. Following Jewel’s statement, Gazipur police conducted block raids on different parts of Gazipur, Dhamrai and Savar to nab the JMB members.

Meanwhile, another victim of the November 29 suicide bomb attacks on the Bar Library, Advocate Anwarul Azim, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday. The death toll from the two bombings in Gazipur now rose to 11 with his death. The lawyers of Gazipur Ainjibi Samity brought out a procession and held demonstration as the news of the advocate’s death reached the district headquarters. The November 29 suicide bomb attack on the district bar library left three people killed including the bomber on the spot and injuring 30. Five more died on the same day, while one died on December 3 and one yesterday. One person was killed and 30 others injured in the December 1 blast.

Tales from the Crossfire Gazette, Weekend Edition
2005-10-23
A regional leader of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) was killed in “crossfire” during a shootout between his accomplices and police in Sirajganj early yesterday.
Our story begins ...
Police on Thursday night arrested the outlaw leader, Hossain Ali, 35, at Joydebpur in Gazipur district ...
... no, I have no idea where that is either ...
... and after 'handling' him handed him over to Solonga police in Sirajganj the following day.
"Cheez, Ali, you look the worse for wear! Wanna answer some more questions?
A team of Solonga police, following his confessional statement during interrogation, ...
"I confess! I confess! Whatever it was, I done it!"
... took him to Ghurka Thakpara area to recover illegal firearms early yesterday.
Can't have illegal firearms lying around, ya know.
According to police, ...
... and who else can tell us ...
... when the team reached the area at about 3:00am, ...
... right on time ...
... accomplices of Hossain Ali opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.
"The coppers got Ali! Open indiscriminate fire!"
Hossain Ali was caught in the crossfire when he tried to escape during the shootout.
No mention of whether it was a sucking head wound or a sucking chest wound.
He died on the spot.
[sniff] I love a happy ending!
Police recovered one shutter-gun and returned it to the police lockup from whence it came, four bullets and some sharp weapons from the shooting spot.
Sporks?
Three policemen were also injured in the shootout and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
A hernia, a strained back and a barked shin.
The body of Hossain Ali was sent to Sirajganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
"Dang, Sam, another one!"
"That's what happens when you work the morning shift, Dr. Quincy!"
Police said Hossain Ali of Charia Kalibari village under Solonga upazila was wanted in eight criminal cases, including one for murder.
And now he's dead.
