[Dawn] A Pak anti-terrorism court freed on Saturday four men accused of involvement in the 2010 Times Square bomb plot, said a lawyer and family members of the men.

in the wake of the May 2010 incident during which Pak-American Faisal Shahzad drove an SUV packed with a bomb into Times Square. The bomb produced smoke but no kaboom.

Lawyer Malik Imran Safdar said Saturday that the prosecution failed to prove its case against his clients. The men were released on Saturday evening after the court in Rawalpindi, next to the capital of Islamabad, acquitted them.

The father of one of the men, Humbal Akhtar, said he was ecstatic at his son's release.

"I have suffered a lot during these two tough years," said Muhammed Akhtar. "Finally I got justice."

In addition to Akhtar, the court released Muhammad Shoaib Mughal, Muhammad Shahid Husain, and Faisal Abbasi. The men were picked up by Pak security officials in the wake of the 2010 incident, and few details of their case have emerged over the two years of their detention.

They were tried by a Pak anti-terrorism court, which are generally off limits to the press or other outsiders.

Terrorism cases in Pakistain rarely result in convictions or prison sentences. Police often lack basic investigative skills, prosecutors lack training in terror cases and judges and witnesses are often subject to intimidation.

Pak security officials have also been accused by human rights

The US has long pressed Pakistain to crack down on cut-throats within its borders, both militarily and through the courts.

Pakistan holds government worker in NYC plot
2010-10-01
[Dawn] An employee at Pakistain's state-run Islamic advisory body has been detained for allegedly playing an important role in assisting the failed New York Times Square car bomber, an intelligence officer said Thursday.

The suspect accompanied Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistain-American bomber, to Pakistain's northwest to meet beturbanned goon leaders, said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the intelligence agency does not permit its operatives to be named in the media.

The suspect, identified as Faisal Abbasi, was with Shahzad throughout his time in Pakistain, the officer said.

He said Abbasi worked for the government's Council of Islamic Ideology, which advises on Islamic affairs.

The secretary general of the council confirmed Abbasi had worked there but had been on ''vacation'' for the last three months.

Pakistain has already charged three men with assisting Shahzad while in Pakistain and sending him money in America.

Shahzad is due to be sentenced in the United States on Oct. 5. He has pleaded guilty to the May 1 failed bombing.

2010-09-30
ISLAMABAD -- An employee at Pakistan's state-run Islamic advisory body has been detained for allegedly playing an important role in assisting the failed New York Times Square car bomber, an intelligence officer said Thursday.
And who would know better about the movements of Paks than an ISI intelligence officer?
The suspect accompanied Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistan-American bomber, to Pakistan's northwest to meet militant leaders, said the officer.
"And this is Muhammed, and this is Mohammid, and this is Mohammad, and this guy, we just call him Mo."
"Pleased to meet all of yas!"
The suspect, identified as Faisal Abbasi, was with Shahzad throughout his time in Pakistan, the officer said. He said Abbasi worked for the government's Council of Islamic Ideology, which advises on Islamic affairs.
And also ensures that the various cut-throats in Wazoo and the Northwest Frontier have the proper ideology, and that the cut-throats sent on missions abroad are properly hopped up with religion ...
The secretary general of the council confirmed Abbasi had worked there but had been on "vacation" for the last three months.
"Vacation, huh? Where you been?"
"Manhattan."
"Why'd you go there?"
"I wanted to see the Twin Towers."
Pakistan has already charged three men with assisting Shahzad while in Pakistan and sending him money in America. Shahzad, who lived in Connecticut, is due to be sentenced in the United States on Oct. 5. He has pleaded guilty to the May 1 failed bombing in New York.

CID arrests four SM militants, makes weapons haul
2005-08-31
KARACHI: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested four activists of the banned militant organisation Sipah-e-Muhammad (SM) and recovered a cache of weapons from their possession on Tuesday. Sources said that the deputy superintendent of police of the special cell for controlling sectarian terrorism was informed about the presence of four Sipah-e-Muhammad militants — Abid Raza, Asad Raza, Kalim Raza and Faisal Abbasi — in a school in Orangi, Karachi west. The CID team arrested the suspects and later on their information, seized eight AK-47 rifles, 10 hand grenades, two detonators, four TT pistols, two sten guns, four revolvers and several rounds of ammunition from a nearby graveyard. Sources said that the suspects belonged to the Imtiaz Jaafri wing of the Sipah-e-Muhammad, adding that they were involved in attacks on various mosques during Ramazan and had also attacked a Harkatul Ansar camp. They said that the suspects had confessed during interrogation that their responsibility in the militant outfit was to supply and maintain the weapons. Police sources said that the suspects were also allegedly involved in the murder of Mufti Atiqur Rehman and his lover companion.
