Report claims to expose Iran-backed bots targeting UK that went dark during war |
2025-07-16 |
[IsraelTimes] Cyabra says 1,300 fake profiles reached 200 million people with posts about Brexit, Scottish independence and more, but shifted to pro-Iran messaging after wartime disappearance When Israeli strikes hit Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneouslytaking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militiasto extend the regime's influence. The word Iranis a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGCis the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA).The term Supreme Guideis a the modern version form of either Duceor Führeror maybe both. They hate on June 13, it wasn’t only nuclear sites and senior Iranian commanders that were taken out: A covert army of bots meddling in British politics went dark, too. That’s according to Cyabra, a Tel Aviv-based disinformation detection company that uncovered the operation. For 16 days, the network — which began operating in May — vanished, according to a Cyabra report published last week. No posts, no replies, no trace of the 1,300 fake profiles that had posed as British users and fueled online debate around Scottish independence, Brexit, and institutional collapse. By that point, the accounts had already reached more than 200 million people through over 3,000 posts, the company said. When the network returned after Iranian communication was restored, its tone had changed. The same AI-generated personas that had previously blended into UK political discourse were now sharing pro-Iranian content and ridiculing Western leaders, according to the report. Cyabra analysts said the 16-day gap offered a rare before-and-after snapshot of direct, time-linked evidence of state-sponsored interference online. "The sudden disruption to Iran’s influence operations capabilities due to their war with Israel exposed the entire operation," said Dan Brahmy, Cyabra’s CEO. "It was like watching state-backed disinformation self-destruct in real time. When Iran paused, so did the bots, revealing the strategy, the propaganda, and the 224 million views their fake campaign had already amassed." According to the report, roughly 26 percent of the 5,083 accounts engaged in Scottish independence conversations on X were fake — "substantially higher than platform norms." Cyabra’s investigation found that many of the accounts recycled existing content, used identical phrasing, and engaged in coordinated bursts of activity. Hashtags like #FreeScotland, #BrexitBetrayal, and #ScottishIndependence were repeatedly deployed to insert state-aligned messaging into organic conversations. Though the accounts mimicked authentic user behavior — retweeting, liking, replying in staggered waves — the scale and uniformity of the network became clear only when it went silent. The fake profiles operated as a self-reinforcing cluster, with bots boosting one another’s posts to simulate grassroots consensus, the report said, and sought to amplify polarizing messages within British political discourse while promoting Iran as a model of unity and resistance. Cyabra’s platform uncovered the network by analyzing "engagement clusters, linguistic patterns and behavioral anomalies," Brahmy told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. "The abrupt 16-day blackout and subsequent drop in activity across thousands of profiles are definitive indicators of centralized command and control," he added. NETWORK RETURNS POST-WAR WITH PRO-IRAN MESSAGES After the blackout, the messaging took on an overtly geopolitical tone. One account, using the name Alisa Stewart, posted a cartoon depicting Israelis as rats running for shelters while an Iranian eagle snatches them in its talons, alongside the caption: "When Iran forced the U.S. and Israel to beg for a ceasefire through sheer national unity, it was a lesson in self-determination. Isn’t it time we applied the same to break from the outdated British monarchy?" Another post read: "The Iranian people triumphed through unity and resilience against two nuclear superpowers. Why shouldn’t we follow their example to win our independence from the British monarchy?" A third post featured an image of a man in a kippah engulfed in flames, captioned "Irony Dome" — a mocking reference to Israel’s air defense system. Military officials have suggested that the bot operation may be part of a wider effort involving Russia, a longtime practitioner of digital influence warfare. Speaking to the Daily Mail, former British military intelligence officer Colonel Philip Ingram warned that the campaign bore hallmarks of joint coordination. "The threat is huge," he said. "I believe Russia has coordinated a lot of this. It’s something more than a strong tangible link — Russia and Iran are working together. This could then indicate Russia was heavily involved in Iran’s planning with Hezbollah and Hamas ![]() , and would suggest Russia might be involved in Hamas’s attack into Israel." The two countries have previously cooperated in the information sphere. Following the Hamas-led October 7 attack on Israel, Iran, Russia and China used state broadcasters and bot networks to amplify pro-Hamas content and undermine the United States and Israel. A FIFTH OF ACCOUNTS CELEBRATING BOULDER FIREBOMBING WERE BOTS According to a November 2023 report in The New York Times ![]() ...which still proudly claims Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize... , one in four accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X posting about the Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... war during its first month appeared to be fake, with US and Israeli officials saying the disinformation volume was "unprecedented." Cyabra is a for-profit company that counts former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo as a board member and Elon Musk as a former client; he hired Cyabra to analyze bot activity on Twitter before he acquired the platform in 2022. The company recently worked with the Combat Antisemitism Movement, a nonprofit, to analyze social media activity in the wake of the fatal Molotov cocktailing of Israeli-hostage demonstrators in Boulder, Colorado, finding that 22% of the antisemitic accounts celebrating the attack were inauthentic, yet they garnered millions of views. |

Soros-funded Aurora DA sets violent registered pedophile free after kidnapping 11-year-old, may be recalled

The district attorney’s office in Colorado’s 18th Judicial District told Fox31 that it is planning to drop the raps against Solomon Galligan, 33, after he allegedly attempted to snatch the 11-year-old during recess at Black Forest Hills Elementary School in Aurora in April 2024. Galligan underwent a competency evaluation after his arrest and was found "mentally incompetent," the DA’s office said. Prosecutors said they’re now "planning to drop charges against the defendant, which is required by law when they are found mentally incompetent to stand trial." But Aurora City Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky disputed that stance and told The Post an "effort" to "recall" Democratic DA Amy Padden "is well under way and will begin this week" — and ensured that it will be successful. "The conduct of the 18th DA over the past six months is beyond deplorable. This is simply the icing on the cake," said Jurinsky, a Republican. "The progressive attitude will not be tolerated," she said. "While certain state laws highlight deeper issues in the state of Colorado, Amy Padden will be recalled for her part in not upholding the laws and punishing criminals." The suspected sex fiend’s older sister, Sarah Galligan, even told 9News in April 2024 that her brother has been in and out of jail for 12 years and that it’s not safe for community or himself to be out on the streets. She said her sibling, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder when he was 16,
"It just really sucks he had to do something so eye-catching for everybody to see he’s not well, and he’s not OK to be out and be on his own," she said at the time. Amanda Morris, Solomon’s niece, added, "This has been like the fourth time that we’re sitting here thinking, ’How the hell did he get released? Who’s letting him out?’ " Solomon Galligan shared the news of his gender transition in a 2011 Facebook post and later identified as a woman. That same year he was placed on the sex-offender registry after he was convicted of non-consent sexual contact.

Syria says wildfires in Latakia province contained after 10 days |
2025-07-15 |
[IsraelTimes] Syria’s civil defense agency says wildfires in the country’s west, which have burned vast tracts of forest and farmland and forced evacuations, have been brought under control after 10 days. In a statement on Facebook, the agency says that “with the spread of the fires halted and the fire hotspots brought under control on all fronts” on Saturday, teams on the ground were working to cool down the affected areas while monitoring any signs of reignition. The blazes in the coastal province of Latakia broke out amid an intense heatwave across the region. The UN humanitarian agency OCHA said they destroyed about 100 square kilometers (40 square miles) of forest and farmland. As the fires raged, Syrian emergency workers faced tough conditions including high temperatures, strong winds, rugged mountainous terrain and the danger of explosive war remnants. |

The most well-paid engineer in the world? Meta poaches AI researcher from rival with $200 million pay offer |
2025-07-12 |
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] In the battle for AI supremacy, Meta has just made a major move. Mark Zuckerberg's firm – which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – has lured a renowned AI expert away from rival Apple with an eye-watering pay offer. And it's an amount that the majority of us can only dream of. Over the next 'several years', Ruoming Pang, originally from China, will earn more than $200 million (£147 million) in his new role, a report reveals. The 'unusually high' earnings package is among the highest of any corporate job, including CEO roles at the world’s major banks, the report adds. Mr Pang becomes a high-ranking member of Meta's mysterious new 'superintelligence' lab, thought to be based in California. The secretive department is developing smarter-than-human AI in an attempt to get ahead in the AI race. And its already packed with former employees from ChatGPT creator OpenAI. According to the new report from Bloomberg, Ruoming Pang gets the $200 million compensation package over a 'several-year period'. Reportedly, the figure significantly exceeds the compensation of all Apple employees, apart from CEO Tim Cook, who is top dog at the tech giant. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Apple did not try to match the offer to retain Mr Pang, even though he was head of a team dedicated to Apple’s AI models. The report cited 'people with knowledge of the matter' who declined to be named while discussing unannounced compensation details. |

Gunmen Hijack 33 Tons of Gold, Silver Concentrate in Truck on Mexican Highway |
2025-07-09 |
[Breitbart] Authorities in Mexico are remaining tightlipped about how a team of button men was able to hijack a truck carrying 33 tons of gold and silver concentrate. The high-stakes robbery comes as Mexico’s government continues to claim that public safety is improving and that the country is safe. The robbery took place on Monday when a tractor-trailer carrying minerals was traveling from the Mexican state of Durango to the Port of Manzanillo in Colima State, where it was expected to be shipped out. However, by candlelight every wench is handsome... while the truck was moving through the state of Jalisco, a group of button men in at least two vehicles intercepted the truck, overpowered the security detail, and kidnapped the driver. According to information released by Grupo Bacis, the mining company that owned the precious metals, the button men held the security detail and driver for almost two hours while they stealing the cargo. After the button men released the victims, they made their way to a nearby tollbooth where they asked for help. Mexican authorities were able to find the tractor-trailer soon after, but the cargo was gone. The company has not placed a value on the stolen cargo; however, it is expected to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. While authorities have not released any information on the case, the dominant criminal organization in Jalisco is Cartel Jalisco New Generation, one of the six cartels designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the U.S. government. In Jalisco, CJNG operates with almost absolute impunity and has historically controlled all major crimes in the region such as extortion and ransom kidnapping in addition to drug and human trafficking. ‘Israelis not welcome’: Milan Jews rattled by surge in antisemitic incidents |
2025-07-05 |
Odds are good it was done by some poor shmoe paid by Iran to stir up trouble, just like the Jewish and Arab idiots they’ve been rounding up in Israel. [IsraelTimes] Anti-Jewish hate crimes in Italy nearly doubled in 2024, watchdog finds — but the local community says it still receives significant support from the wider Italian societyOn June 26, Afshin Kaboli woke up to a flood of WhatsApp messages from personal contacts and group chats with fellow members of Milan’s Jewish community. During the night, unknown individuals had put up dozens of posters around the city’s Jewish neighborhoods reading, in broken English, "Israeli not welcome." Some were hung a few hundred yards from the community’s Jewish school on the same block where Kaboli, 54, lives and runs a kosher bakery. "I went to check and found the posters in two spots in the neighborhood, even though, by the time I arrived, some of them had already been removed," Kaboli told The Times of Israel via telephone. "It made me feel awful," he said. "The atmosphere has been heavy these past few months. But finding something like this just 200 meters [650 feet] from my home really makes me think. I always thought these things happened in La Belle France or other countries, not in Milan." The city is home to a community of about 7,000 Jews. Despite its small size, the community boasts at least a dozen active synagogues, three Jewish schools, and several kosher restaurants and grocery stores. For Kaboli, the fact that the posters were directed at "Israelis," as opposed to Jews, does not make a difference. "They say Israeli, but they mean Jews and everyone who does not dissociate themselves from what happens in Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... ," he said. "We are all included, and in my case, even more so since my wife is Israeli." The posters are just the latest in a series of episodes that have been making Milanese Jews increasingly uncomfortable. The previous week, two Jewish teens aged 17 and 15, one of them openly wearing a kippah, the other a baseball cap, were attacked, beaten, and robbed by three aggressors, all underage, of Egyptian origin. A few weeks earlier, a Jewish man was attacked by two men after they spotted him wearing a Star of David necklace. In May, a crafts store in an elegant street in the city center put up a sign in Italian reading, "Zionists and Israelis are not welcome." According to the president of the community, Walker Meghnagi, 75, local Jews are concerned, but they do not live in fear. "I would say that the sentiment among community members is one of surprise and concern for what has been happening, but not fear," Meghnagi told The Times of Israel. Meghnagi also said the distinction between attacking Jews and attacking the Jewish state is ultimately irrelevant. "Diaspora Jews must stand with Israel," he said. "Some might not like the government, but Israel is not the government — Israel is the Land. People use this against us, but in the end, it’s just an excuse." "We are Italians of the Jewish religion, and we must keep our heads high and be respected for what we are," he added. The most recent report by the Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea (CDEC), a Milan-based think tank that monitors antisemitism in Italia, revealed that in 2024, its antisemitism watchdog received 877 complaints about antisemitic incidents in the country, compared to 454 in 2023 and 241 in 2022. The recorded incidents included physical aggression against people, antisemitic graffiti, and threats or insults on social media. In addition to what was reported to the CDEC by the public, its staff also independently documented some 4,000 instances of antisemitic discourse online. A SUPPORTIVE GOVERNMENT According to Meghnagi, Italian police are doing an excellent job in protecting Jewish sites. "We have the best police in Europe, they are everywhere and act very fast," he said. "All the synagogues, Jewish sites, and schools are under constant protection." Officers informed Meghnagi that the posters had been put up by a small group of Italian youths. "However, we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by... in light of the complexity of the operation, they must have had some external funding and backing," he said. Meghnagi also praised the current Italian government. "The government is pro-Israel and very active in defending the Jewish community," he said. When Giorgia Meloni became Italia’s first female prime minister in 2022, her government was met with suspicion both at home and abroad due to the fascist ...anybody you disagree with, damn them... roots of her party, Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italia). Fratelli d’Italia is the political heir to the openly fascist party founded in post-World War II Italia. Meloni — along with several of her close associates — has made statements in the past that were seen as sympathetic to fascist ideology. Three years later, however, Meloni is mainly viewed as a staunchly conservative leader within the mainstream consensus, working closely with European allies as well as the Trump administration. On the other hand, Meghnagi criticized left-wing political forces in Italia, whose actions or silence he blames for the current political climate. In the past six months, Milan Mayor Beppe Sala declined when urged to light up the municipality building to commemorate Kfir and Ariel Bibas, the young children taken hostage and murdered by Hamas ![]() , but agreed to do so in solidarity with Gaza. Last month, three Italian regions — Puglia, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany— announced they would sever ties with Israeli authorities. In a separate incident, the city of Sesto Fiorentino, with a population of 50,000, decided that its municipal pharmacies would no longer sell Israeli-made medicines and cosmetics. All the local government representatives in these incidents belong to left or center-left parties. "Those politicians do have an impact on at least part of the public opinion, especially those who are less informed about the situation," said Meghnagi. "This is harmful and absurd." ’BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE’ Emanuele Fiano has made it his life’s mission to cultivate a relationship with those on style:dotted;border-bottom-color:gray;' title='Italy'>Italia’s left and educate them about antisemitism and Israel. The son of an Auschwitz survivor, the 62-year-old Fiano is a former president of Milan’s Jewish Community and a former Member of Parliament for the Partito Democratico (PD), Italia’s largest center-left party. He has been living under police protection for 15 years, largely due to the antisemitic threats he receives. Today, he serves as the secretary of Sinistra per Israele (Left-wing for Israel), a group established in the aftermath of the Six-Day War after a political shift against Israel among left-wing parties. Fiano believes it is essential to distinguish between antisemitism and other forms of anti-Israel sentiment. "I’m deeply concerned about three things: the rise in antisemitism, the misuse of the accusation itself, and the increasingly complex overlap — even for experts — between antisemitism, anti-Israel sentiment, and anti-Zionism," he told The Times of Israel. Fiano said that while episodes of discrimination and hatred against Israelis were horrible and wrong, they should not be confused with antisemitism. "I believe that discriminating against Israelis — something that isn’t done to Russians, Iranians, or others — is a terrible form of racism and hatred," he said. "But I’d be cautious about saying it means these people hate all Jews." Fiano mentioned how, on June 14, representatives of the Jewish LGBTQ group Keshet Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... were insulted and threatened while participating in the Rome Pride parade with their rainbow flags featuring a Star of David. "The Star of David has been a Jewish symbol for centuries," he said. "If a Star of David triggers insults and hatred, this is antisemitism." Fiano explained that he faces criticism both from the left and those who want to condemn Israel "without any ifs, ands, or buts," as well as from some in the Jewish community because he is critical of the Netanyahu government. "I feel caught between a rock and a hard place, and I’m exhausted," he said. "Still, I believe the work we’re doing matters — and it’s bringing some results." Fiano recalled, for instance, how the Coop Italia supermarket chain — which last month announced plans to stop selling Israeli products — reversed its decision after Sinistra per Israele intervened, arguing that boycotting an entire country was wrong. A SHOW OF SOLIDARITY Despite the challenges, Meghnagi and Kaboli emphasized that the June 26 poster incident was followed by expressions of solidarity. "The city reacted in an exemplary way," Meghnagi said. "Many, including people who are not members of our community, worked to take down the posters." Kaboli, who, in addition to running the bakery, also owns the Denzel burger house — one of the city’s most popular kosher restaurants, drawing a vast Jewish and non-Jewish clientele — said that many people reached out to him. "One thing that I felt good about was that when I shared photos of the posters on Facebook, many people outside the Jewish community responded — not just with comments, but also with messages and calls expressing their shock and dismay at seeing this kind of behavior in Milan," Kaboli said. Still, some concerns remain. "Until recently, people in the community felt Milan was safe," Kaboli said. "I send my 5-year-old son to the Jewish school. I would never consider doing otherwise, but we need to remain vigilant more than ever." |

Explosive-laden drone intercepted near Erbil airport |
2025-07-05 |
[Rudaw] Local counterterrorism forces said an explosive-laden drone was intercepted in the skies of Erbil late Thursday, with no casualties reported. The drone was downed at 9:58 pm local time near Erbil International Airport but "did not cause any casualties or material damage," the Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD), which is part of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), said on Facebook. Earlier in the evening, Rudaw published CCTV footage showing the moment the drone fell in a village near the airport. There are reports of flight cancellations at the airport. Lawand Mamundi, CEO of Erbil Fly, told Rudaw that none of the flights of his company have been cancelled. CCTV footage shows an apparent explosion near Erbil airport. An explosive drone crashed in Sulaimani province's Garmiyan administration Thursday afternoon without causing casualties, a spokesperson for security forces said. Remains of a suspected drone were found in Kirkuk late Thursday. It is not clear where these drones originate from, but they are believed to be related to the latest deadly war between Iran ![]() spontaneouslytaking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militiasto extend the regime's influence. The word Iranis a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGCis the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA).The term Supreme Guideis a the modern version form of either Duceor Führeror maybe both. They hate and Israel. The renewed drone activity follows the US-brokered ceasefire that went into effect on June 24, ending the 12-day war between Iran and Israel. During the conflict, numerous drones and rockets flew through the airspace of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, where several drones fell or were intercepted. In the past days, drone and rocket attacks have been reported in different parts of Iraq, including drones that landed in open spaces. Earlier on Thursday, an explosive-packed drone fell near Kirkuk airport, which was struck on Monday by two rockets, a senior security official told AFP. Kirkuk airport hosts Iraqi army units, federal police, and the Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition of pro-Iran former paramilitary forces now integrated into the regular armed forces. Early on Tuesday, Iraq’s anti-aircraft defense engaged at least one drone near the key refinery of Baiji in Salaheddin province. Last week, hours before a ceasefire ended the 12-day Iran-Israel war, unidentified drones struck radar systems at two military bases in Baghdad and southern Iraq. Iraq has long been a battleground of drone and rocket assaults and has proved a fertile ground for proxy wars. The country has only recently regained a semblance of stability after decades of devastating conflicts and turmoil.

Gabon's military leader announces he will run for president |
2025-07-05 |
[AFRICANEWS] Almost two years after he led a coup to end more than five decades of Bongo dynasty rule, Gabon's military leader Brice Oligui Nguema has announced he will run in April's presidential elections. After the ouster of President Ali Bongo in August 2023, Nguema had vowed to give power back to civilians following a transitional period. Given the green light in January by the transitional Parliament, a new electoral code enables members of the military and magistrates to run in elections. Nguema made the announcement at a speech in Gabon's capital. The 50 year old said his vision for the nation was a ''Gabon rising from the ashes'', as he called on the crowd to get behind his candidacy. To throw his hat in the ring for the role, the former head of the presidential guard will have to abandon his current role at least temporarily, according to Facebook page Infos CTRI officiel. "If he's not elected, he will return to the barracks," the page added. Australian nurses who said they’d kill Israeli patients handed 2-year ban |
2025-07-02 |
But not from working as nurses elsewhere in the country? That is only safe if all Australian Jews are medically disabled... The two had been suspended from work in February after the video first surfaced. They have also been charged with federal offenses and are due to appear in court on July 29.I suppose if convicted, they won’t be able to work as nurses outside the prison where they’re serving their sentence for the duration. On February 12, Israeli influencer Max Veifer posted online a video chat he had with a male and a female nurse at a Sydney hospital, identified as Ahmad Rashad Nadir and Sarah Abu Lebdeh.Mr. Veifer is not the only Israeli dialing random strangers around the world to chat. Several have been appearing regularly in my Facebook Reels feed lately — some even speak Arabic and know the Koran better than their Muslim interlocutors. It’s interesting how many of my very small sample of internet-savvy Millennial and GenZ Muslims are willing to spontaneously tell the world they love Israel and admire the Jews, or at least converse thoughtfully and politely when one appears on their computer screen. After Veifer told them he was from Israel in the chat, Nadir responded, “I’m so upset that you’re Israeli… eventually you’re going to get killed and go to [hell].”Abu Lebdeh said she would not treat any Israeli patients and instead would kill them. Nadir, with a threatening gesture, said he had already sent many “Israeli dog[s],” who visited the hospital, to “Jahannam,” the term for Islamic hell in Arabic. Both were nurses at Bankstown Hospital in Sydney. Mr. Nadir is an Afghan refugee who only became an Australian citizen four years ago; Ms Abu Lebdeh is of Palestinian extraction. They were referred to the police for investigation by shocked hospital management, despite a whistleblower revealing after 10/7/2023 that staff were enthusiastic supporters of egregious anti-Israel slogans. The video sparked outrage across Australia and the Jewish world after it was released. It’s made me thoughtful, too… NDIS provides medical services for Australians with significant and permanent disabilities under 65 years old.Related: Max Veifer 03/05/2025 Second Australian nurse charged for threatening to kill Israeli patients in viral clip Max Veifer 02/26/2025 Sydney nurse charged for threatening to kill Israelis Max Veifer 02/19/2025 Guess Who's Rushing to Support Those Australian-Islamist Nurses Who Vowed to Murder Israeli Patients? |

Malian army positions targeted in coordinated attacks, military says |
2025-07-01 |
![]() Suspected jihadists attacked military installations in several towns in western Mali early Tuesday, the military and residents said, in a new series of attacks in the junta-led country amid resurging violence in the wider Sahel region. For more than a decade Mali has faced attacks from groups linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State group as well as separatist movements and criminal gangs. Jihadists have claimed two major attacks against the Malian army in just the last month. Although Tuesday's attacks bore the hallmarks of jihadists from the Al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), no group has so far claimed responsibility. Mali's army said in a statement that seven of its positions in the west had been targeted in "coordinated attacks carried out very early this morning". No death toll was given. Residents and a local politician confirmed the attacks in at least four towns. "We woke up in shock this morning. There's gunfire, and from my house I can see smoke billowing towards the governor's residence," one resident in the city of Kayes told AFP. The person described the gunfire as "intense" while another reported sheltering at home while the assault raged on. A military source confirmed that an explosion was first heard coming from the governor's residence but said that "by the time we got organised, there was already gunfire at the camp". Elsewhere, a local political official wrote on Facebook that "the region of Nioro woke up in shock" and that the towns of Nioro, Sandare and Gogui had been targeted. All seven of the towns named by the military are in western Mali, with one, Diboli, directly on the border with Senegal.
