Murtha says Dems will rule House of Representatives "big time"
2006-10-23
Greene County: Murtha calls Iraq a 'failed policy wrapped in illusion' at banquet
Good. He says black, I think white.
JEFFERSON -- John Murtha has never been one to hold back on what he believes.
Not since he lost his mind, anyway.
And the outspoken Johnstown Democrat, who is seeking re-election to Congress in the sprawling 12th District, didn't disappoint the crowd gathered Sunday night at the Jefferson fire hall to honor state Rep. Bill DeWeese as "Democrat of the Year."
Must have forgotten there are other voters out there.
Murtha, 74, one of several speakers at the Greene County Democratic Committee's fall banquet, said he has never seen people so eager for a change.
True, if you're only counting the people who will have you over for dinner.
"There is going to be a tidal wave Nov. 7. The House of Representatives is going to turn Democratic, big time," Murtha said.
Hmm. What are you thinking of doing?
Why?
[Popcorn time!]
"Because the Republicans are not paying attention to the moonbats people. The Bush administration is arrogant," he said.
I guess moonbats call people arrogant if you ignore their rantings.
Murtha, while passionately defending his patriotism, has been criticized for his criticism of the way the war In Iraq is being handled.
I guess passion will have to substitute for reason here.
"This is a war that cannot be won militarily," he said. "There is a limitation of what the military can do. Our soldiers are caught up in a civil war and while we need stability in the Middle East, we cannot do it by ourselves," he said.
No $hit, $herlock. Does that mean we have to get out? Does that mean we aren't trying? I don't remember anybody whining about the possility of the barbarism we are witnessing now. But we'll get it beat down eventually.
He makes no apologies for his stand on the war.
That's why they call it insanity.
"I do this as an obligation as a member of Congress. When I see a policy I don't agree with I have to speak out," he said.
Yes, but you don't have to make stuff up.
Murtha, who is running against Washington County Commissioner Diana Irey, said he keeps saying to the Bush administration, "Folks, it's not going the way you said it would go. You are painting too rosy a picture. We have kids being killed and we have to change course and we have to change direction."
Pure genius. Battle plans evaporate as soon as they see the enemy. More details, please?
He said no one supports the military more than he does.
WTF?
A former Marine colonel, Murtha said he has three brothers who served in the Marines, and his father and two uncles were World War II veterans.
I wonder what their opinion of all this is. I'm pretty sure the dead ones have been whirring along at about 20,000 RPM ever since he accused those marines of violating ROEs and intentionally killing innocent civilians.
"I support the military but I cannot support a policy having young people in harm's way in the middle of a civil war" he said.
Your ideas here, please? Run away as soon as they start shooting each other, perhaps? Good precedent.
Murtha said there were a lot of people who thought he would back down when people started to attack him.
Maybe you should take your own advice and get the heck out of town when your own people start taking potshots at you.
"I talk to the military all the time which makes you an expert, I'm sure and I go to the hospitals at least once a week and I see the results of this bad policy, a failed policy wrapped in illusion," he said.
Where did you borrow that from.
Murtha also said this country should be worried about North Korea and Iran, both of which have nuclear potential, something Iraq never had.
We are.
"Yes, we should be worried because of how we have depleted our reserves in this Iraqi war. We have to work this out diplomatically with North Korea and Iran," he said.
Good luck with that. They only listen to food and the 12th Imam, respectively.

Murtha's opposition to Iraq war makes him a big target
2006-10-16
Rarely in the annals of American politics has the much-used David-Goliath analogy been so apropos. U.S. Rep. John Murtha is literally and figuratively daunting -- literally because he's 6 feet, 3 inches tall and broad-shouldered with a booming voice; figuratively because he's a giant in Congress, a 32-year veteran of the House of Representatives. And his challenger, Republican Diana Irey, is the opposite -- soft-spoken, slight, barely clearing 5 feet, a neophyte on the national stage.

We know how the Bible story ended. But can Mrs. Irey slay this towering Johnstown warrior?

Since earning a surprising victory in her first run for political office, when she defeated an incumbent to secure a seat on the Washington County Board of Commissioners in 1995, Mrs. Irey has been a favorite among Pennsylvania's GOP notables such as former Allegheny County Chief Executive Jim Roddey, and Sens. Arlen Specter and Rick Santorum. A West Virginia native, she married into a family with some clout. Her late father-in-law, Frank Irey, was GOP chairman in Washington County. For years, there had been speculation that she'd be recruited to run for higher office, but, until now, she's balked, citing her young family and her comfort with her role in Washington, Pa.

Redstate: New polling on the Irey-Murtha race
2006-10-04
PA-12 is shaping up to be something of a horserace.
When the Irey campaign did preliminary polling last spring, the results were not encouraging. The 30-year incumbant in the PA-12 seat, John Murtha, led the little-known Diana Irey by thirty points. Mr. Murtha was emerging as the liberal conscience of the Iraq war, and promised to gain ever more power and influence as part of the House Democratic leadership. He has high-profile influential friends and a bully pulpit provided by a compliant national media that gives him a regular spot on the Sunday shows.

If I were Commissioner Irey I might have considered throwing in the towel and going to the beach for the summer. Fortunately, she did no such thing.

Ms. Irey rolled up her sleeves and got to work. She has gained some recognition on her own as a staunch supporter of the armed forces, the mission in Iraq, an advocate for rigorous immigration policies and a fiscal conservative. She has also been drawing attention to Mr. Murtha's many failings. And she's producing results. The campaign has just commissioned another poll by Public Opinion Strategies and Ms. Irey has closed the gap to ten points as the race now stands at 55%-45%. She gained ten points and brought Mr. Murtha down ten--and the momentum is all in her favor.

Commissioner Irey's mission over the next five weeks is to keep shining a bright light on Mr. Murtha's disgraceful record while articulating her own platform. The POS poll included some interesting numbers on eleven issues that make voters less likely to vote for Mr. Murtha by as much as 57% (a list is appended below)--and when voters read about these issues, Mr. Murtha's numbers drop into the low 40s. It's incumbant on all of us who want to see Ms. Irey in Mr. Murtha's chair come January to help her spread the word that Mr. Murtha is self-interested and venal, and willingly steps on the backs of his former fellow service members to hoist his substantial bulk up the political ladder. And fortunately, the Irey campaign is no longer a lone voice in the media wilderness. She's getting some assistance from a rather unlikely source--no less than the New York Times, which has in the past held Mr. Murtha up as a moral authority on Iraq, yesterday headlined his political "horsetrading" motivated by the desire to increase his personal prestige and bring more pork (from whatever source) to his district rather than by principle or fiscal responsibility. Major television outlets, such as Fox's Hannity and Colmes show, have picked up the story.

The momentum in this race is with Diana Irey. She is poised to win if we all help, and here are eleven excellent reasons to go to her website and donate some time and money:

• Congressman Murtha said that U.S. Marines in Iraq had, and I quote, “killed innocent civilians in cold blood,” end quote, before any soldier had been charged and convicted. (12 percent more likely, 40 percent less likely)

• Congressman Murtha said we could redeploy U.S. armed forces from Iraq to Okinawa, Japan, 5,000 miles away. (11 percent more likely, 36 percent less likely)

• Congressman Murtha voted to strip U.S. intelligence and law enforcement authorities of stronger tools to fight the war on terror when he voted against extending the USA PATRIOT Act. (14 percent more likely, 43 percent less likely)

• Congressman Murtha’s brother is a lobbyist who represents at least ten clients who have received tens of millions of dollars in government contracts from the 2005 Defense Appropriations Bill Congressman Murtha wrote and pushed to passage. (6 percent more likely, 39 percent less likely)

• Since Jack Murtha became a Member of Congress 32 years ago, Congress has raised its pay 20 times – and Congressman Murtha voted 12 consecutive times to raise his own salary. (8 percent more likely, 43 percent less likely)

• Congressman Murtha’s starting salary as a Congressman was $42,500 per year; it is now $165,200 per year. (7 percent more likely, 37 percent less likely)

• Congressman Murtha tried to create a new law that would have required taxpayers to pay for the legal expenses of Members of Congress and congressional staffers who have been convicted of taking bribes. (8 percent more likely, 57 percent less likely)

• Congressman Murtha hosted a “welcome back” party in his congressional office for a powerful former congressional staffer who was guilty of taking money illegally from a lobbyist seeking legislative favors. (7 percent more likely, 48 percent less likely)

• In 1980, Congressman Murtha was named by the U.S. Department of Justice an “unindicted co-conspirator” in ABSCAM, the largest congressional corruption scandal in history. (8 percent more likely, 40 percent less likely)

• When questioned by the press about his role in the ABSCAM congressional scandal, Congressman Murtha insisted that FBI agents, and I quote, “didn’t offer me any money” – despite the fact that they had a tape showing them offering him a bribe. (7 percent more likely, 45 percent less likely)

• When undercover FBI agents offered Congressman Murtha a $50,000 bribe, he was heard on an FBI tape saying, and I quote, “At this point, you know, we do business together for a while. Maybe I’ll be interested and maybe I won’t … Now, I won’t say that some day, you know, I, if you made an offer, it may be I would change my mind some day.” (5 percent more likely, 49 percent less likely)

I think we all agree it's time to clean up Congress. And we could do much worse than starting with John Murtha. Vote Irey!

SeeBS Call to arms: Opponents Aim To 'Swift Boat' Murtha
2006-10-02

Democrat John Murtha is one of Congress's most vocal opponents of the war in Iraq, but the former Marine's own war record is now coming under fire from a familiar source.

CBS News correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi reports from deep in the heart of Pennsylvania steel country that Rep. Murtha is engaged in a new battle – this one in his own backyard.

This is what Murtha, a Vietnam veteran, is saying: "I don't appreciate these people sitting on their fat backsides at the White House, sending our young people to war when they don't understand the circumstances."

But this is what he's facing: "We are her to 'Swift Boat' John Murtha."

That's right, "Swift Boat." Veterans for Truth – some of the same guys that went after John Kerry's military record in 2004 – is back.

This time, they are gunning for Murtha – who is up for re-election – by questioning his military record and his character.

"Our campaign is entirely negative, but as we all know, negativism is a positive aspect of American politics," said fellow Vietnam vet and former Congressman Don Bailey.

This weekend, they organized a "Boot Murtha" rally.

Murtha, ever the Marine rolled out some heavy political ground support of his own to take them on.

"Jack Murtha's critics don't know Jack," said fellow Vietnam vet and former Senator Bob Kerrey.

"This guy laid his life on the line for us and for our country, and we're not going to let any Swift Boaters, shrimp boaters or anybody else take out Jack Murtha," said another Vietnam vet and the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.

No one thought the 16-term Congressman was in any danger of losing his seat to Diana Irey - his "stay the course" Republican challenger. But the "Swift Boat" guys changed the equation, so Democrats are changing their battle plan.

"Take your dirty politics, shove it where the sun doesn't shine and leave town," is how former Senator and Vietnam vet Max Cleland put it.

Irey in town: Murtha rival sets up shop
2006-08-17
It is no accident that Republican congressional candidate Diana Irey has opened a campaign office in U.S. Rep. John Murtha’s backyard. But rather than an attempt to gain a foothold in the powerful Democrat’s hometown, Irey says she simply needed a headquarters for a local campaign movement that has a full head of steam. “We’re signing up more and more volunteers every day,” the Washington County commissioner said Tuesday.

Irey opened an office in a complex off Eisenhower Boulevard, Richland Township. It is her only other office aside from her campaign headquarters in Monongahela, Washington County. And Irey said she intends to have her Richland location, which will serve mainly Cambria and Somerset counties, staffed daily. Supporters packed the small office Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Hopefully, it will be full of people tomorrow and every day after that,” said Bill Weigle, Cambria County Republican Committee executive director.

Irey’s move is not causing much concern in the Murtha camp, said Ed Mitchell, the congressman’s campaign spokesman. “(Murtha) always won this area very significantly, and we feel he’ll do that again,” Mitchell said.

Irey – flanked by Republican lieutenant governor candidate Jim Matthews – used a short speech Tuesday to attack Murtha’s record. Echoing what has become a major theme in this campaign, she criticized Murtha’s calls for a troop withdrawal from Iraq. “We don’t need to redeploy our troops,” Irey said. “We need to redeploy John Murtha.”

Will Murtha’s Iraq stance hinder his re-election bid?
2006-07-10
U.S. Rep. John Murtha understands he has become a lightning rod for his controversial and uncharacteristic outspokenness against the war in Iraq. But Murtha, D-Johnstown, says he believes troops will begin being redeployed before the November election, a move that will allow him to refocus on jobs, health care and economic development closer to home in his bid for re-election. “It’ll still be an issue in the fall. It just won’t be as much of an issue,” Murtha said in an interview with The Tribune-Democrat. “You’re going to see a redeployment of troops this year. I think you’ll see a substantial withdrawal of troops.”

Political experts are divided about whether Murtha’s polarizing views on the war will affect his campaign against Republican challenger Diana Irey, a Washington County commissioner. “I cannot deny that Murtha has done a wonderful job for our region,” said state GOP Chairman Rob Gleason of Johnstown. “He’s brought home the bacon. If that’s how you want to judge a congressman or any elected official, he gets five stars. I think everything was pretty positive until the past few months, when he started attacking the president and the war and saying things that weren’t really positive as far as the troops were concerned.”

Murtha appears to have contracted Daschelitis, potentially fatal
2006-06-28
Rep. John Murtha (D.-Pa.) appears to be suffering "Daschle-itis," a figurative disease which makes entrenched incumbents become national celebrities and, in the process, risk alienating the voters that put them in office.

Since seizing his party's anti-war mantle, Murtha has become a great draw for Democratic fundraisers, helping his party boost its prospects for a congressional takeover. Naturally, this helps his party-leadership bid as well.

But at the same time, his outspokenness made him a huge target for the Internet right. His district went for John Kerry with only 51% in 2004. What originally seemed like a long-shot bid by Diana Irey (R.) to unseat Murtha has taken on new credibility as she raises money from the Internet and as Murtha makes more and more outrageous statements.

Murtha's opposition to the war has never been the real issue. His assertion that the U.S. is the greatest danger to world peace is only the most recent and perhaps most striking example of his potentially dangerous venture into the great left. Even more offensive were his statements condemning Marines who allegedly participated in a massacre in Iraq, which gave no regard to the presumption of innocence or the existence of evidence (the Marines involved maintain their innocence).
