Australia's US ambassador Kevin Rudd faces calls to resign over disparaging anti-Trump comments
2024-11-12
[NY Post] "Oops! Taken out of context!"
Australia’s US Ambassador Kevin Rudd is facing calls to resign after his slew of disparaging comments against President-elect Donald Trump resurfaced — causing concerns over whether he’ll be able to work with the incoming president.

Rudd called Trump "the most destructive president in history" and "a traitor to the West" in past tweets, as well as "a village idiot" and "incompetent" in a 2021 video interview uncovered by Sky News.

"The most destructive president in history. He drags America and democracy through the mud. He thrives on fomenting, not healing, division," Rudd wrote on X in June 2020. "He abuses Christianity, church and the Bible to justify violence."

Rudd hastily deleted his past tweets insulting Trump soon after it appeared likely that the Republican would cinch the election against Vice President Kamala Harris last week.

But Australian officials, who are particularly concerned over Trump’s 10% tariff proposal, worry that the damage is already done — Rudd’s insults could hurt Australia’s relationship with the US under a Trump presidency.

"Loose-lipped Rudd is so arrogant he actually thinks he can walk back every insult ever delivered about Trump and get away with it," The Nightly editor-in-chief Christopher Dore wrote in a Sunday opinion piece.

"It is ludicrous to even contemplate keeping Kevin Rudd in Washington as our ambassador to the US," Dore argued.

Michael Kroger, the former president of Australia’s Victorian Liberal Party and a frequent conservative commentator, said Rudd should do what’s best for the country and step down.

"Kevin Rudd knows Australia’s best interests are not served by a ferocious critic of Donald Trump as our Ambassador in Washington," he told the Herald Sun. "For Australia’s national interests, Mr Rudd needs to hand in his commission to the Prime Minister who should then appoint a more diplomatic ambassador."

Former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer told the publication that Rudd has made his own job incredibly difficult by his criticism of the US president-elect.

"Kevin Rudd may find this hard to believe but he might find that Donald Trump has more on his mind than the future of Kevin Rudd," said Downer, who also served as Australia’s ambassador to the UK.

Disgraced FBI Official Charles McGonigal Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy
2023-08-17
[RedState] As anticipated, former FBI official Charles McGonigal pled guilty on Tuesday to one count of conspiracy in federal court in New York arising out of his efforts to aid Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska in evading U.S. sanctions.

The Information filed Tuesday (and which can be viewed in its entirety below) alleged one count of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which authorizes the president to regulate international commerce, including investigating and imposing controls on transactions and freezing foreign assets under U.S. jurisdiction when a national emergency is declared as to any external "unusual and extraordinary threat to the United States."

The Information alleges that in furtherance of the conspiracy, McGonigal:

a. From in or about August 2021 through in or about November 2021, McGONIGAL and others, acting at the behest of Oleg Deripaska, whom the United States Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control designated as a Specially Designated National on or about April 6, 2018, sought to gather derogatory information about a rival of Deripaska, in violation of IEEPA.

b. From in or about August 2021 through in or about November 2021, McGONIGAL and others received and routed payments from Deripaska through two corporations, neither of which was registered in the name of McGONIGAL or Deripaska, in an effort to conceal that the payments originated from Deripaska.

McGonigal was originally charged with five counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, money laundering (and conspiracy to commit same), and violating the IEEPA (and conspiracy to commit same). Pursuant to Tuesday's plea, the remaining four charges will be dismissed.

McGonigal, 55, was formerly the FBI special agent in charge of the bureau's counterintelligence division from 2016 to 2018, which ironically meant that he was involved in investigating former President Donald Trump for Russian collusion, then essentially engaged in it himself. As streiff explained in January:

McGonigal was a key figure in creating the Russian Hoax. He’s the guy who received the allegation made by Australian High Commissioner to the UK Alexander Downer that Trump campaign aid George Papadopoulos said the Russians have “dirt on Hillary.” For a trip down memory lane, read Was a Drunken Conversation Really All the Probable Cause the FBI Needed to Investigate a Presidential Campaign?

While the media is harping on the “Russian oligarch” narrative because they can never admit Hillary Clinton’s opposition research team thoroughly punked them, it is useful to remember that in 2009, FBI Director Robert Mueller approached Deripaska about funding a private effort to locate American citizen, former FBI agent, and suspected CIA asset Robert Levinson who had gone missing in Iran. More memories can be found at There Might Be a Very Good Reason Why Mueller Is Not Indicting Paul Manafort’s Russian Business Partner. Even as the Russia Hoax was unfolding, Hillary’s oppo team at Fusion GPS was working on getting sanctions removed from Deripaska, which is the same activity that got McGonigal indicted; see
New York Times Forced To “Correct” Major Story on the Manafort Case. I don’t know the trajectory of McGonigal’s career, but it is entirely possible he was in the New York Field Office when Mueller tried to turn Deripaska into an FBI asset.

At the plea hearing on Tuesday, McGonigal expressed remorse for his actions.

The former FBI special agent in charge of the agency's counterintelligence division from 2016 to 2018 told the federal judge that he took over $17,000 from Deripaska in exchange for collecting derogatory information on a different Russian oligarch. Deripaska was a business competitor with the person McGonigal was paid to find derogatory information on.

Additionally, McGonigal was allegedly working to help get Deripaska removed from the sanctions list, prosecutors said.

The American was in talks, along with co-conspirators, to get a $650,000 to $3 million fee to search for hidden assets of $500 which belong to Deripaska's business rival.

...

"This, as you can imagine, has been a painful process not only for me, but for my friends, family and loved ones," McGonigal said. "I take full responsibility as my actions were never intended to hurt the United States, the FBI and my family and friends."

In addition to facing up to five years in prison, McGonigal must forfeit $17,500 pursuant to his plea agreement. He is scheduled to be sentenced in December.

Charges against McGonigal for misleading the FBI regarding his contacts with foreign nationals and concealing $225,000 he allegedly received from an Albanian intelligence employee remain pending in U.S. District Court in Washington D.C.

Peter Strzok would like to clear a few things up
2020-09-06
In which POLITICO attempts to rescue the sorry mess that Mr. Strzok, et al made in their attempt to reverse the 2016 election.
[Politico] "I’m sorry to bother you. But it turns out Trump just accused me of treason."

Peter Strzok, who was still an FBI employee that day in January 2018 and couldn’t respond to the president’s attack, was appealing to his boss: "The bureau can’t let this stand," he pleaded.

"I’m sorry, Pete," came the response. "We’re not going to say anything."

Nearly three years later, Strzok — who led the FBI’s Russia investigation, dubbed Crossfire Hurricane, until he was removed over several anti-Trump texts
...hundreds or thousands, actually — I don’t exactly recall the appalling number, just that it’s a wonder he got any work done at all...
he’d sent during the election amid an affair with a colleague — is finally able to speak publicly and on his terms for the first time since he joined the FBI more than two decades ago.

And he has a lot to say.
No doubt. Did he run the manuscript by management before release, or is that only a CIA thing?
Strzok’s new book, obtained by POLITICO ahead of its release next week, recaps the full arc of Crossfire Hurricane from the perspective of an enterprising
..that’s one word, certainly, though not one on my list for him...
counterintelligence expert who perceived Donald Trump and his campaign team not necessarily as criminals but as compromised by a foreign adversary. And he worries that there’s still much we don’t know, because the bureau was never able to do the kind of deep dive into Trump’s business records he wanted.
Perhaps he should have consulted Robert Mueller’s team — they spent two years and tens of millions of dollars investigating the question, followed by Attorney General William Barr, Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Lindsey Graham investigating the Mueller investigation.
The investigation began as a pure counterintelligence inquiry — an attempt to understand who, if anyone, on Trump’s campaign team had been offered help by Russia to undermine Hillary Clinton. The probe kicked off with a tip from an Australian diplomat, Alexander Downer, who told the FBI that he had heard from a Trump campaign staffer about a Russian overture to the campaign after the leak of hacked Democratic National Committee emails.

The FBI’s probe soon zeroed in on four possibilities of who might have received that offer, according to Strzok: Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, foreign policy advisers Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, and soon-to-be national security adviser Michael Flynn. It turned out to have been Papadopoulos. But by the time they figured that out, Trump had been elected president — and Strzok’s team had uncovered so many suspicious contacts and communications between the campaign and Russians that they began debating whether to open a case on Trump himself.

CIA Director Gina Haspel Is Feeling the Heat as John Durham's Investigation Focuses on CIA Misconduct
2019-12-29
[RedState] Why the CIA? Because though we know some, in the quaint words of FBI attorney Lisa Page in her texts to the adulterous Peter Strzok, "OCONUS lures" were approved, there seems to have been an unseemly amount of collaboration with foreign intelligence services in this whole mess. For instance, Christopher Steele’s professional associations were at least as strong with CIA as with the FBI. The whole incident involving George Papadopoulos seems almost entirely an intelligence undertaking. Joseph Mifsud was a Western intelligence asset...most likely Italian. He’s the guy who planted the story with Papadopoulos about the "dirt" the Russians had on Hillary Clinton. Alexander Downer, the former Australian diplomat who had an oh so casual conversation with Papadopoulos in a London bar and reported on that conversation to his superiors, is thought to be an MI6 asset. And we have to wonder why a senior Australian officials felt obliged to report this rumor through intelligence channels. Later on a mysterious woman, ’Azra Turk,’ was dangled in front of Papadopoulos in what appeared to have been an abortive ’honey pot’ operation, something much more in keeping with an intelligence rather than a law enforcement operation.

And, of course, former CIA Director John Brennan was a driving force in the mainstreaming of the Steele Dossier, despite his own agency calling it an ’internet rumor,’ into the Russia Hoax an he has been one of the most vociferous voices pushing that Hoax in the media. And, because Brennan can’t have acted alone, that raises a host of questions about the actions of the CIA...especially considering that it is a CIA officer, Eric Ciarmarella, who acted as the "whistleblower" that set off the impeachment of President Trump.

But, as I note above, the walls seem to be closing in on Brennan and that has caused one of the leading purveyors of the Russia Hoax, Natasha Bertrand, to write a story basically framing this as a loyalty test for CIA Director Gina Haspel. The messenger, here, is the message. Bertrand was an uncritical stenographer for Fusion GPS to the extent that you often see her referred to as "Fusion Natasha."

BREAKING: Senate Schedules FISA Abuse Hearing, Signals IG Report Release Is Imminent
2019-11-19
[Red State] This is a bit of welcome news.

If you’ve paid attention to Sen. Lindsey Graham’s statements on FISA abuse and the coming IG report, you know that he’s consistently insisted that he won’t schedule any hearings on the matter until the IG report has been released. His logic is that without the report, he won’t have the totality of the information needed.

Given that, this is a pretty big development.

With that, things suddenly got a lot more official. Graham would not be scheduling this hearing if he did not have assurances that the report would be released beforehand. In this case, perhaps the rumors it was coming right before Thanksgiving (likely dumped on the eve of the holiday if you are making bets) are true.

While I’m still a cynic anyone will be held accountable, multiple sources are saying that the report itself will contain numerous criminal referrals. We could be just a few days away from finding out just who is being targeted here. Is it James Comey? John Brennan? That will be revealed soon enough.

As impeachment begins to lose steam, the IG report and DOJ investigations into exactly what happened during the Trump-Russia investigation could prove to be a big shift in the political atmosphere. While the media will do everything they can to downplay it, they won’t be able to hide the truth from voters.

Australian media reporting that US Atty Durham has interviewed Alexander Downer
2019-11-12
[American Thinker] Heh US Attorney John Durham is running an investigation into the Russia hoax that has been almost airtight. A fragment of information on his activities, however, comes our way via Australian media.

Alexander Downer’s meeting with George Papadopoulos at the Kensington Wine Rooms in 2016 played a key role in providing a rationale for an FBI investigation of the Trump campaign, including FISA warrants allowing wiretapping. At the time, Downer was the Australian High Commissioner (ambassador) to the UK, and had been Australia’s foreign minister earlier, a very senior diplomat to be entertaining a young Trump campaign volunteer.

The meeting, also attended by Aussie diplomat Erika Thompson, elicited the information from Papadopoulos that he had been told by mysterious Maltese Professor Joseph Mifsud that the Russians had a trove of Hillary Clinton’s missing emails. When that information was duly passed along and reached the US, it became justification for investigating "collusion with Russia."

Over last weekend, Downer sat for an interview with Sky News of Australia, and via paywalled News Corp newspapers, we learn:

Former Australian foreign affairs minister Alexander Downer has reportedly told a US investigator he did not try to bring down Donald Trump during the 2016 US presidential election.

"Try to bring down" is language to could hide a lot of other activity.

US Attorney John Durham, tasked with investigating the origins of the probe into Russian influence in the election, is understood to have interviewed Mr Downer in London last month and reviewed a confidential Australian diplomatic cable to clarify Australia’s role, The Australian reports.

Mr Durham is also believed to have interviewed Australian diplomat Erika Thompson, who arranged and attended the Downer-Papadopoulos meeting.

He is understood to have asked Mr Downer whether he knew Joseph Mifsud, the Maltese academic who told Mr Papadopoulos the Russian government had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

Panicked CIA Turns to PR Firm (Disinformation Central) The New York Times
2019-06-14
[PJ] Panicked CIA turns to their PR firm The New York Times to get in front of DoJ investigations

The intelligence community's crisis communication firm, The New York Times, spun into action yesterday, "reporting" that A.G. Barr is going to investigate the CIA's participation in the RUSSIA-collusion hoax.

Before I get into the details of this press release written by and published in the NYT, take a moment and ask yourselves, should there be oversight for the CIA? Who conducts that oversight? The CIA "sources" referenced in the NYT press release seem a little miffed that some folks want to check their math.

According to the press release:
The ties between the efforts by the C.I.A. and the F.B.I. to examine Russia’s election interference are broader. In the summer of 2016, the intelligence community formed a task force housed at the C.I.A. to investigate Russian interference. The group shared intelligence with F.B.I. investigators who opened the bureau’s Russia inquiry in an effort to determine whether any Americans were working with the Russians on their interference during the election.

What about CIA activity before "the summer of 2016"? This is the time period when some foreign intel assets were recording and trying to entrap George Papadopoulos (Papa-D.) Papa-D met with a fake "RUSSIAN spy" (but likely Western intelligence asset) Joseph Mifsud in April 2016. Now the pretend story is that after Papa-D met with Mifsud and "learned" the RUSSIANS had dirt on Hillary, he shared that information with Australian diplomat/spy Alexander Downer and a honey pot in May. Downer waited until July ("the summer of 2016") to tell the U.S. and that kicked off the counterintelligence investigation. Why would a Western asset like Mifsud, who trains spies in Italy at The Link, tell a low-level volunteer what he "heard" about the RUSSIANS? Did the CIA deploy Mifsud to fish Papa-D back in April? Was it that punk Brennan? The British spooks? Let's find out.

Europe
Italy, UK’s MI-6 aid the Durham probe of Brennan, Mifsud’s Trump Spygate
2019-06-13
[COMMDIGINEWS] As US Attorney John Durham launches a widespread probe into the origins of the Russia Hoax, foreign intelligence agencies implicated in the scandal are cooperating with the investigation. The government of Italia has fired the heads of two Intel agencies over the Brennan-Mifsud spying allegations.

As well as 4 of their top associates.

PM @GiuseppeConteIT has suddenly requested resignations from 6 deputy directors of Italian intelligence agencies: DIS, AISI and AISE.

British spy Remington Christopher Steele is also talking to Durham’s Sherlocks.

ITALIA, UK, AUSTRALIA, AND UKRAINE ALL NEED TO COOPERATE WITH DURHAM
No word yet on the Australian government’s exposing the actions of Alexander Downer in setting up George Papadopoulos in phase two of the CIA entrapment scheme. Yet it is clear that CIA assets Joseph Mifsud, Alexander Downer, and Stefan Halper were all intimately involved in the coordinated conspiracy to portray Donald Trump
...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US...
as a Russian agent.

That this operation was carried out by senior elements of the State Department, CIA, DOJ, and FBI. It is a testimony to the ultimate coordination of the illegal efforts by the Obama White House.

Now that Durham has officially notified Congress of the depth and extent of the Russia hoax conspiracy, we can expect the unseemly revelations to continue to be exposed.

ITALIA FEELS USED BY BRENNAN AND OBAMA
One of the principle reasons behind the turn of events is that the foreign intelligence agencies and the heads of their governments feel that they were used by the Obama White House and John Brennan
...director of the CIA under the Obama administration. One of the deeper dwelling denizens of the Deep State, possibly even the guy who lit the match that launched the Russiagate coup attempt...
They were engaging in illegal activities that clearly interfered in the internal affairs of the United States.

The Italians government particular is incensed. Italia is launching an intensive investigation into the entire affair. They have promised to share the results of their investigation with the United States.

The possibility of criminal activity in Italia against Italian officials is very real.

UK AND MI-6 ARE UP TO THEIR NECKS IN THE RUSSIA HOAX
In the UK MI-5 and MI-6 have been up to their necks in the Russia hoax conspiracy for some years now. Why they would allow themselves to be used in this way? Much less participate enthusiastically.

It was clearly a large, tightly coordinated operation. How and why did they coordinate with Halper, Downer and the FBI? What could they possibly have been thinking? It is a total mystery.

Yet sadly, it is clear that British Intelligence services were not only aware of the efforts to entrap members of the Trump campaign. They actively participated in it.

Imagine the surprise in London, Canberra, and Rome when Perennial Presidential Campaigner Hillary Crooked Hillary Clinton
... former first lady, former secretary of state, former presidential candidate, Conqueror of Benghazi, Heroine of Tuzla, formerly described by her supporters as the smartest woman in the world, usually described by the rest of us as The Thing That Wouldn't Go Away...
lost and Donald Trump became President. Just as in the United States, panic set in at the intelligence agencies who had played a role in the scheme. Brennan, Clapper, and Comey were completely freaking out.

As was Hillary Clinton.

Imagine what the heads of MI-6 and Italian intelligence were thinking. Well, it is now clear what they were thinking.

CERTAIN THAT HILLARY WOULD WIN, SO THEY PLAYED ALONG WITH BRENNAN
It seems they were thinking they were about to be exposed. They had joined the wrong garden party. They were waiting for the other shoe to drop. Like their American counterparts, they were certain Clinton would win.

Dick Morris: The Brits Played A Large Role In The Russian Collusion Hoax
2019-06-10
[Red State] Obviously, much of the spying, the use of FBI informants to infiltrate the Trump campaign, took place on British soil. The incident that the FBI claims triggered them to open an counterintelligence investigation into candidate Donald Trump, a conversation between Australian diplomat Alexander Downer and Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos, took place in a London bar. Stefan Halper, a professor at Cambridge University, met with several Trump campaign junior advisors in London as well.

We also know that the day after Peter Strzok, who at the time led the FBI’s Counterespionage Division, opened the investigation into the Trump campaign, he hopped on a plane to London. We know from texts between Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page he was accompanied by another, more senior FBI official as well. Testimony from other FBI officials have pointed to a London connection as well.

In the video below, political analyst Dick Morris discusses the role played by the British intelligence community in the hoax against candidate Trump and the reasons why the Brits were strongly hoping for a Hillary Clinton victory. Trump worried the British elite, Morris says. "He questioned the value of NATO, he said it might be obsolete. He openly endorsed Brexit which they strongly opposed...Then, when he started to say nice things about Putin, praising his leadership style and saying that he could do business with him, that set off alarm bells throughout London." According to Morris:

FBI Attacks On Bill Barr Show That He's On The Right Track And Getting Close To Home
2019-05-20
BLUF
[Red State] This morning some former FBI goon and current NBC News/MSNBC analyst named Frank Figliuzzi launched an attack on Bill Barr in NBC’s opinion section.
As we all have learned, the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division, acting on classified data, allied intelligence, human sources and conduct occurring in plain view, opened a counterintelligence investigation to explore Russia’s attempts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. The Russian efforts were later detailed in over two dozen federal grand jury indictments involving Russian intelligence officers and Russian nationals.

The FBI inquiry also included connections between the Trump campaign and known or suspected Russian government affiliated individuals. Those connections are detailed in over 100 pages of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report. Mueller’s inquiry was predicated by the FBI’s initial Russia investigation. Now, President Donald Trump and Barr seek to undermine Mueller’s findings by fueling doubt about the FBI’s decision to open the initial Russian case that led to a special counsel appointment. Back at the Kremlin, the vodka is flowing.
Except that really isn’t the truth, even by the FBI’s own narrative. The FBI has claimed that a conversation between George Papadopoulos and Australian diplomat Alexander Downer started the investigation...or they did until that story stopped being tenable and then FBI insiders took to the pages of the New York Times to revise and extend that story. We know that candidate Trump was never briefed on any of the dodgey contacts by staff members and given the opportunity to fire them. Instead, inexplicably if one assumes the FBI was not operating as an adjunct of the Democrat Party and the Clinton campaign, they allowed the people they were targeting to have the activities remain hidden from candidate Trump. I think the reason for this is obvious. If they kept surveillance on these people they were able to use them as a gateway to carry out surveillance on the entire Trump campaign and, through them, the RNC. Essentially, this was Watergate but the burglars were the FBI.

As to the vodka flowing, if you think the Kremlin isn’t laughing about one of their information operations, by that I mean the Steele Dossier, being the cause of a special counsel investigation of a sitting president and an impeachment proceeding you really haven’t been paying attention.

Mark Steyn: The Deep State Goes Dangling
2019-05-15
[Mark Steyn] On this second anniversary of The Mark Steyn Club, we're proud to present the first of a special two-part edition of The Mark Steyn Show in which I talk with George Papadopoulos, the first Trump campaign member to plead "guilty" in the Mueller investigation. I've seen plenty of three-minute telly hits with Mr Papadopoulos and always wanted to know more, so I figured, after a year or more of waiting, that I might as well interview him myself.

There were two reasons I was intrigued - first of all, because (as I've written before) young Papadopoulos seemed to me to be obviously the "mark" of multiple high-level well-connected figures from America, Britain, Italy, Australia and elsewhere, but also because several of those persons such as Boris Johnson and Alexander Downer were known to me personally. George Papadopoulos has now set down his account of what happened these last four years of his life in a new book called Deep State Target, which I highly recommend. And just within the last twenty-four hours the Attorney-General has appointed a prosecutor, John Durham, to investigate the origins of the FBI's "Crossfire Hurricane" - the "counter-intelligence" operation that targeted Papadopoulos and other Trump campaign staffers.

That's quite something: the cabinet officer to whom the FBI is politically accountable needs a special investigation to figure out what a subsidiary of his department was up to during the last election campaign. There is much more to come out.

So we begin where George's story begins - with a young Beltway think-tank wonk watching an unlikely presidential candidate descend an elevator in a Fifth Avenue skyscraper. Click below to watch:

Papadopoulos Suspects Other 2016 Campaigns Were Spied On
2019-05-08
[Daily Caller] WASHINGTON, D.C.‐Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos told Tucker Carlson on Tuesday that he suspects the Obama administration spied on other 2016 presidential primary campaigns.

Papadopoulos, whose meeting with Australian diplomat Alexander Downer was used to open the FBI’s July 31, 2016 counterintelligence probe, says he believes he was being monitored long before he joined the Trump campaign.

"In November of 2015, upon the same month that I was going to the Ben Carson campaign‐because people forget that I was on Carson’s campaign before I joined Trump’s campaign‐I was living in London and I had been approached by high-level State Department officials and even the CIA in London," Papadopoulos said. (RELATED: Stefan Halper’s ’Assistant’ In Papadopoulos Spy Operation Has Been Outed)

He continued, "They invited me to the U.S. embassy to meet with me and to basically probe me and to get to know why I’m joining the Ben Carson campaign and what the Ben Carson campaign was really all about. And the man who invited me was David Kovatch, who still works at the U.S. embassy in London. I think he’s directing the Energy Department over there. So clearly, by November 2015, I don’t think that Trump’s campaign was the only one that was under surveillance, quite frankly."
