IHC throws out petition seeking to stop Aurat March |
2020-03-07 |
![]() IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah dismissed the petition saying the right of assembly is a fundamental right but he stated that the court expects that the participants of the march will exercise their rights in accordance with the law. While dismissing the petition, the top judge highlighted the following points:
The court had earlier in the day reserved its verdict on the maintainability of the petition, while questioning the petitioners' interpretation of slogans they had objected to. Pemra advises TV channels to refrain from airing 'controversial content' on Women's Day [DAWN] The Pakistain Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Friday issued an advisory pertaining to coverage of International Women's Day ‐ commemorated on March 8 ‐ and warned TV channels against airing "unethical slogans, play cards (sic) with objectionable content". The advisory pointed out that the Lahore High Court (LHC) had issued conditional permission for the Aurat March, which is to be held on occasion of the International Women's Day. In pursuance of the high court's order, the Pemra advisory stated that some channels had "aired controversial content with special reference to the slogan relating (sic) to Aurat March". The regulatory body urged channels to be "mindful of the fact that telecast of such controversial content is against the commonly accepted standards of decency as well as religious, social, cultural norms and sentiments of public". "Furthermore, the airing of such vulgar/inappropriate content is not suitable for viewing on TV channels," the advisory read. The notification did not elaborate on what kind of content would qualify as "controversial" or "vulgar". It also did not specify the objectionable slogan it referred to in the advisory. IHC suspends decision to cancel JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah's citizenship |
2019-10-30 |
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday suspended the National Database and Registration Authority's (Nadra) decision to cancel the citizenship of Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam ...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one that was led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spent more time running his madrassah until his secretary rubbed him out in a jealous rage. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability... -Fazl (JUI-F) leader Hafiz Hamdullah. Hearing a petition filed by the former senator and minister, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah sought a reply from Nadra within two weeks and directed the authority as well as the interior ministry not to take any sort of action against Hamdullah. On Sunday, it was reported that Nadra declared Hamdullah an 'alien' after finding that he had 'fraudulently obtained' his computerised national identity card (CNIC), which was subsequently cancelled. While the government decision had been taken two weeks prior, it came to the limelight only days before the JUI-F’s so-called 'Azadi March' on Islamabad. A notification issued by the Pakistain Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) barring TV channels from inviting Hamdullah to talk shows as a guest had referred to a Nadra letter dated Oct 11. In his reaction, the JUI-F leader blamed state institutions of 'political victimisation' and said no one in his family, including his father, had ever been accused of being an alien. He said his father was an employee of the education department in 1974 and he had already provided documents to Nadra to prove it. During court proceedings today, Hamdullah said Nadra had cancelled his CNIC and he had submitted a petition against the decision; however, no action had been taken on the application for a week. He said Nadra's decision should be declared void and the interior ministry should be stopped from taking any action. Officials representing Nadra told the court that in December 2018, a letter was written to the JUI-F leader regarding his citizenship and a district-level committee had been formed. Following this, Hamdullah had appeared before the committee, which had asked him for his documentation. According to Nadra, the documents presented by the JUI-F leader had turned out to be "bogus". Justice Minallah asked if Hamdullah had any children and whether they had CNIC cards, to which his lawyer responded in the affirmative. The counsel added that one of Hamdullah's sons was even in the army. "Can you doubt the citizenship of the husband of a mother who sends her son to sacrifice himself for the country?" the IHC chief justice remarked. After hearing initial arguments, the IHC decided to suspend Nadra's decision to cancel Hamdullah's citizenship. Pursued by NAB, JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani files pre-arrest bail plea |
2019-10-24 |
[DAWN] Former federal minister Akram Khan Durrani on Tuesday filed a petition before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking pre-arrest bail in multiple inquiries initiated against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Mr Durrani, a leader of the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam ...the political wing of the Pak Taliban... -Fazl (JUI-F), claims that he is being victimised for playing a key role in the Azadi March to be launched by his party on Oct 27 against the government of the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... (PTI). In his petition the JUI-F leader stated that he is "being victimised and harassed by the respondents [the chairman, deputy director and investigation officer Nadeem Fraz of NAB] although he is cooperating with them and will continue to do so. However, some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them... the pace at which all three inquiries are being carried out, his arrest before he could further garner support from other opposition parties for Azadi March is very likely." Mr Durrani is facing inquiries for alleged corruption in two housing projects of the Federal Government Housing Foundation, appointment of blue-eyed officers in the Pakistain Housing Authority Foundation, allotment of ’out of turn’ plots for mosques and induction in the Pakistain Public Works Department (PWD). The petitioner states that he "belongs to Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam-F which is to lead the Azadi March against the government from Oct 27" and a Rehbar Committee was formed for coordination and preparation of the protest. "The petitioner has been playing an instrumental role in the Rehbar Committee and has in fact been representing his party at some of these meetings of the committee," the petition said, adding that the government "just to disturb political activities" is behind the inquiries. The petitioner said that NAB "since its formation in 1999 has primarily been serving as a tool of political engineering and a way of silencing dissenting voices". He expressed apprehensions that NAB may be used against the Azadi March’s organisers. ANP claims ‘resurgence’ of Taliban in South Waziristan |
2019-04-03 |
[DAWN] The ’resurgence of Taliban ...Arabic for students... ’ in South Wazoo tribal district echoed in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly here on Monday amid heated debate over the poor law and order situation across the province, including merged districts. The politicians exchanged barbs over the increasing incidents of extortion, kidnapping for ransom and child abuse, and the issues related to the Fata-KP merger. The debate generally focused on the law and order situation in the province. Speaker Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani presided over the session. "A week ago, I went to South Waziristan and saw gun-toting good Taliban roam around," ANP parliamentary leader Sardar Hussain Babak told the house. Mr Babak questioned the existence of peace committees (aman committees) in South Waziristan district. He alleged that members of the peace committees received 30 percent kickbacks in the development work carried out in South Waziristan. The ANP leader added that the peace committees took Rs2.4 million from every truck carrying goods from Afghanistan. "The entire world has pressured Pakistain to eliminate proscribed organizations from its soil, while the authorities have taken steps but despite that, the activists of such outfits are delivering speeches and collecting donations in mosques," he said. Mr Babak wondered why the provincial government was silent about the brutal liquidation of the province’s police officer, SP Tahir Dawar, in Afghanistan, who was kidnapped in Islamabad. Leader of the opposition Mohammad Akram Khan Durrani said the incidents of kabooms had almost ended in the province but the rate of other crimes was on the rise. "When a Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ![]() High Court judge is not safe, how the people will be saved," he said while referring to the attack on Justice Ayub Khan on Feb 28 in Hayatabad. |

KP Assembly unanimously passes resolution against Aurat March, terming it 'shameful' |
2019-03-21 |
[DAWN] The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution condemning the Aurat March, which was held across Pak cities on March 8. The resolution, presented by Rehana Ismail of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), claimed that women had taken part in the march holding placards and raising slogans that were "obscene". "Some hidden forces have sped up their efforts to destroy our family system and social customs, the practical demonstration of which took place on March 8, 2019, in various big cities on Women's Day," the resolution stated. It said the demands made at the event for women empowerment were "shameful and un-Islamic". The document stated that although the provincial assembly supports the rights granted to women and minorities by Islam, the "obscenity" witnessed on March 8 was not acceptable to it. It asked the KP government to request the federal government to "expose" such forces and their "conspiracies" and prepare a strategy to deal with such incidences in the future. The resolution in its original form was opposed by MPAs of the ruling Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... (PTI), but after some redaction and negotiations, they agreed to unanimously pass the measure. Speaking during the session, PTI MPA Ayesha Bano said they supported organizations that speak for women's rights, however, "We do not accept any demands of women which are against Islam." Opposition leader Akram Khan Durrani, who also belongs to MMA, recalled that a banner at the Aurat March had read "Apna moza khud dhundo (find your own sock)" and said: "If I have pain in my back and my wife helps me put on a sock, what is wrong in that?" PML-N's parliamentary leader in the KP Assembly, Sardar Muhammad Yousaf Zaman, claimed that certain NGOs were working against Islamic injunctions and the Constitution. "Shamelessness is being spread in the name of 'change'," he stated. Women in large numbers, as well as men, had participated in the Aurat March held across the country to mark International Women’s Day on March 8. The first such march took place in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... in 2018; this year, the rally was extended to more cities including Lahore, Multan ![]() , Faisalabad ...formerly known as Lyallpur, the third largest metropolis in Pakistain, the second largest in Punjab after Lahore. Flawed foreign policy leading country to isolation: Fazl |

There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... government is leading the country to isolation in the comity of nations, while its economic policy is increasing poverty and indigence in the country making life harder for the poor. Addressing the ’million march rally’ organised by JUI-F here on Sunday, he came down hard on the PTI government and warned the rulers that any move to rollback the 18th Amendment and recognise Israel would be disastrous for the country. Criticising the government for its failure to improve the economy despite tall claims during the election campaign, the chief of his own faction of JUI said poverty was on the steep rise with the result that life was becoming harder for the poor. "Those who were claiming to change the very fate of the poor and bringing about revolutionary changes in their lives have now come up with hens and eggs and forgot and consigned to oblivion their glittering promises," he said Mr Rehman alleged that the government was conspiring to amend the law that had declared the Ahmadis as a minority and the chain of events and the stance of the government had proved it beyond any shadow of doubt that the rulers were with the enemies of Islam. "The government is guilty of conspiring to alter the blasphemy law, setting blasphemers free and playing to western tunes, and it was due to this reason that a former elected prime minister and politicians of the parties were sent to jail before the election," he continued. The JUI-F chief said his party would not allow the implementation of any foreign agenda contrary to the teachings of Islam and that his party supporters would not hesitate to render any sacrifice for upholding Khatam-e-Nabuwwat. The JUI-F chief accused the PTI of stealing the public mandate, alleging that the last general elections were rigged in favour of Imran Khan ![]() ... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems... -led party. Regarding the Aasia Bibi case, he said it was not the legality of arrest or release of the Christian woman that was bothering the nation, but her release "under a deal" with the west. He insisted that the PTI supported and appreciated NAB when it jugged Please don't kill me! the opposition leaders but started criticising the accountability watchdog when it began investigations against Imran Khan’s sister and Aleem Khan. He announced that the next protest would be held on Feb 24 in Badin district of Sindh province and on Feb 28 at Nasirabad in Balocistan province. MMA leaders Mufti Kifayatullah, Maulana Shah Awais Norani, Rashid Mehmood Sumro, Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai, Akram Khan Durrani, Maulana Amanat Shah, Maulana Shuja-ul-Mulk, Abdul Ghafoor Haderi, and other leaders also addressed the ’million march’. |
