Five charged with Oyasiqur murder
2015-09-03
[Dhaka Tribune] At least eight members of banned myrmidon outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team were involved in the murder of secular activist Oyasiqur Rahman Babu on March 30, the Detective Branch (DB) of police said in the charge sheet submitted yesterday.

DB Inspector Moshiur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court showing 40 people as prosecution witnesses.

He named five Ansarullah members in the charge sheet since details about the three others -- Masum alias Masud, Sharif and Abrar -- were not found.

"They will be named in a supplementary charge sheet once we get details or arrest them," the IO mentioned in the charge sheet. It says the killers first planned to kill Oyasiqur in December.

General Recording Officer of the CMM Court Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain said: "The charge sheet will be produced before the court of Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman on Thursday [today] for next course of action."

The five accused are Zikrullah alias Hasan, Ariful Islam alias Mushfique, Saiful Islam alias Monsur, Akram Hossain Hasib alias Abdullah and Maulana Junayed alias Taher. Of them, Akram and Taher are on the run.

Of the others now in jail, Saiful was locked away

with firearms and machetes in his possession in Jatrabari area on March 23. Police claimed that Saiful along with Zikrullah and Arif were going to kill Oyasiqur on that day.

On the other hand, Zikrullah and Arif were held by some transgender people when they tried to flee after hacking Oyasiqur to death at Begunbari in Tejgaon Industrial Area. Another killer Taher expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

In primary interrogation, they claimed that a "hujur" (religious scholar) had professed to kill atheists while a "Boro Bhai" (senior brother, Abdullah) gave them Oyasiqur's photographs and the murder weapons.

The charge sheet says that Abdullah, who works as an organiser for the outfit, criminal masterminded the killing, and gave arms and training to the killers for three months.

A travel agency trainer by profession, Oyasiqur was an active campaigner of the ongoing war crimes trials and advocate of secular spirit.

In early May, a group called al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) grabbed credit for the murders of Oyasiqur and other secular activists since 2013. It is alleged that Ansarullah members are representing AQIS in Bangladesh.

The charge sheet says that the accused first planned to kill Oyasiqur after holding a meeting at Arif's house in Mirpur 11 area on December 15 last year. They also sat together at a house of South Kajla in Jatrabari some days before the killing.

Zikrullah is a student of Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong. Arif had been a student of the same madrasa and later became a student of Mirpur Darul Ulum Madrasa.

Arif was arrested in September 2012 from Raipura of Narsingdi during training at a myrmidon camp.

2014-01-06
[Bangla New Age] Polling in 147 constituencies for the 10th Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday was marked by death of 18 people in violence, low turnout of voters and stuffing of ballot boxes by ruling party men across the country.

A member of Ansars and 17 opposition activists were killed in Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Feni, Munshiganj, Laksmipur, Jessore, NATO

re, Chittagong and Gaibandha districts as violent festivities erupted across the country after opposition men tried to foil voting in the 'one-sided' polls.

The BNP-led opposition alliance demanded cancellation of Sunday's 'farcical elections' and announced a fresh round of 48-hour general strike beginning at 6:00am today along with the blockade for fresh elections.

The ruling Awami League, however, termed Sunday's election as 'victory of the people and democracy'.

Candidates in 153 constituencies had already been elected unopposed after the opposition alliance boycotted the polls.

Burning down of more than 150 polling stations by opposition activists before polling began at 8:00am Sunday, killing of an assistant presiding officer and snatching of election materials forced the Election Commission to suspend voting in around 400 centres.

Turnout of voters was relatively higher in three constituencies in Chittagong Hill Tracts where Awami League candidates had close contests with independent candidates. Mobile phone networks in the three districts were switched off on the polling day.

Both the Election Commission and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission said they were not aware of it and not certain who ordered the mobile network off. 'There was no such instruction from the commission,' said election commissioner Mohammad Shahnawaz.

Three regional political parties -- Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti, United People's Democratic Front and Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (MN Larma)] -- saw the move as a part of 'election engineering'.

At the T&T Girls College centre at Mohakhali, Awami League activists stuffed ballot boxes forcing all out of the polling booths in the afternoon.

Bangla BhaiŽs bodyguard arrested
2009-04-18
[Bangla Daily Star] Police yesterday arrested a fugitive bodyguard of executed JMB leader Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai at Kornipara of Gabtoli in Bogra.
This isn't the same bodyguard who got exploded when they captured Bangla Bhai. It's another, presumably niftier, bodyguard.
Russell, also a member of the banned Islamist militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), has been absconding since the government launched a drive against the militant organisation four years ago.
What the hell kind of a name is "Russell" for a proper Islamist? It's like "Herb," or "Bob." At least go with something Arabiany, like "Shabazz" or "Malik" or "Rexx".
Acting on a tip off, police arrested Russell from a bush adjacent to his home, acting Officer-in-charge of Gabtoli Police Station Tofazzal Hossain said.
"We got yer bush surrounded, Russell! Come out witcher hands up!"
Sources said police came to know about Russell's return as soon as he reached home yesterday. "Nothing can be said with certainty about the activities and plans of Russell until preliminary interrogation is completed," said Superintended of Police of Bogra Akram Hossain.
"Yasss. A Russell in the hand is worth two in the bush."
However, police sources after questioning Russell said he had a meeting with Bhagna Shaheed, current JMB commander of Bogra and its adjacent areas, two to three days ago and he talked about JMB's organisational activities with him.
"I'm tellin' youse, Bhagna, we gotta go to da bushes! Udderwise da Barzinis and da Tataglias'll wipe da floor wid us!"
Russell is an accused in a case filed in connection with the JMB attack on Khetlal Police Station in Joypurhat in 2004 and the looting of a rifle, wireless sets and bullets from the police station.
"Hrarrrr! Gimme dem rounds o' bullet, coppers!"
At least seven associates of Bangla Bhai are absconding since the government launched a drive against JMB. Bangla Bhai, who once spread Islamic militancy, was captured wounded on March 6, 2006 from a remote Mymensingh hideout and was later hanged. Bangla Bhai, who used to introduce himself as Azizur Rahman and Omar Ali Litu
... and sometimes as Liam O'Reilly or Martha Jane Cudgel...
while conducting militant operations in the northern region in the name of outlaw-cleansing, started his activities openly with direct patronage from local administration, police and some ruling party lawmakers and ministers in April, 2004. Bangla Bhai and his men killed 22 people and maimed and tortured over 300 in the JMB's vigilante operations in the northern region from April to July 2004.
