Three of those executed had been found guilty of a 2016 attack claimed by the Islamic State

Friday’s report was "the first round of executions in the last six months," a representative of Human Rights Watch said.

40 takfiris killed, 437 hideouts destroyed in counter-terrorism raids: Egypt's Armed Forces
2020-12-09
It is definitely true that the Egyptian army announced all this. How true the announcement is — that is a different question.
[AlAhram] 'As a result of the valiant combat missions of our armed forces in the areas of operations, two officers, four non-commissioned officers, and one soldier were martyred or injured'

The General Command of the Egyptian Armed Forces announced that 40 extremely dangerous takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
s have been killed during various security raids carried out within the past three months, adding that the operations have led to the martyrdom or injury of seven army personnel.

According to an official statement released by the military front man on Tuesday, the country's Air Forces demolished 437 hideouts and depots, which terrorist elements had been using as shelters and warehouses for ammunition and weapons along the strategic north-eastern direction.
ISIS-linked Ansar Bayt al Maqdis, wandering the wastes of the Sinai approaching the Gaza border.
The operation resulted in the death of 25 extremely dangerous takfiris, as well as the destruction of six booby-trapped four-wheel-drive vehicles used to carry out terrorist operations, the statement added.

The Armed Forces also said it has carried out a number of qualitative operations, which have led to the killing of 15 "extremely dangerous takfiri elements."

According to the statement, the army seized three automatic rifles, one sniper rifle, and 7 magazines, in addition to a walkie-talkie and a number of cell phones and passports.

Also, it has defused up to 159 bombs placed on main roads and destroyed 32 cycle of violences used by terrorist elements.

12 takfiri’s were arrested during the operations, the statement said, adding that legal actions were taken against them.

The statement added that the Navy Forces have continued their efforts in safeguarding the state's coastal borders and securing vital targets in Egyptian territorial waters in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

The Air Forces managed, in coordination with Border Guard Forces, to conduct a pre-emptive strike against terrorist elements, destroying 21 four-wheel-drive vehicles loaded with weapons and ammunition on their way to illegally infiltrate the western borders.
That’d be Libya, I suspect.
As for security efforts on border crossings, the Egyptian forces also seized 149 thousand pieces of uncleared goods by customs, 7 rifles, 160 magazines, and a large amount of ammunition.

Up to 1,448 illegal migrants colonists were stopped while attempting to leave the country; 39 four-wheel drive vehicles were seized while trying to infiltrate the borders, and 5 tunnels were discovered and destroyed in the northeastern strategic direction, the statement added.

A massive campaign was also launched against a number of narcotic farms in South Sinai, the statement noted.

"As a result of the valiant combat missions of our armed forces in the areas of operations, two officers, four non-commissioned officers, and one soldier were martyred or injured," read the statement.

The operations were carried out between September and 8 December, according to the statement.

Egypt court upholds death sentences for 13 members of Ajnad Misr
2019-05-08
[AlAhram] Egypt's top appeals court upheld on Tuesday death sentences against 13 members of the terrorist group Ajnad Misr,

who were convicted on charges including murder.

The defendants were first handed the death penalty
by a lower criminal court in December 2017 before they later appealed the sentences.

They were convicted on the murder of security personnel, attempted murder, joining an outlawed group, and possessing firearms, in association with events that took place between 2013 and mid-2015.

Tuesday's rulings by the Court of Cassation, the country's highest court, are final and cannot be appealed.
Whew! I’m sure all involved are glad that’s over, even those not keen on their personal outcomes.
Ajnad Misr, or Soldiers of Egypt, emerged in early 2014 and grabbed credit for a number of attacks on security forces, mainly in the Egyptian capital. The group was designated a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government in the same year.

and many of its members are in jail.

The court also upheld life sentences for 17 defendants, 15-year prison terms for two others and five-year terms for seven.
The Times of Israel adds:
The government in February 2018 launched a large-scale military operation against IS in the Sinai Peninsula of eastern Egypt. Around 600 suspected murderous Moslems and 40 soldiers have been killed so far, according to official figures.

Egyptian grand mufti affirms death sentences for 13 Ajnad Misr terrorists
2017-12-08
[AlAhram] A criminal court in Egypt's Giza has sentenced 13 members of the terrorist group Ajnad Misr to death after the country's top Moslem legal authority consented to the punishment, following their conviction for attacking security forces.

The court issued preliminary death sentences against the defendants in October and referred them the grand mufti, whose opinion is legally required in death penalty
cases but is not binding.

The court on Thursday issued a final verdict after the mufti endorsed the sentencing recommendation, which can still be appealed within 60 days.

Blast outside Cairo courthouse injures two policemen, civilian
2015-08-11
[AlAhram] A bomb went kaboom! outside Misr Gedida Courthouse in eastern Cairo on Monday, wounding two coppers and a civilian, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Militant group Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) grabbed credit for the attack in a statement posted on its Twitter account.

The Cairo-based group has claimed previous deadly attacks targeting police locations, including kabooms outside a presidential palace and outside Cairo University campus.

The interior ministry said those maimed in Monday's blast included a police colonel and a major.

The bomb damaged a power box near the office next to which it went kaboom!.

Explosives experts also defused a second device they found while searching the vicinity of the building after the blast.

This is not the first time a bombing has targeted the court complex; in March, a bomb shattered the building's facade and damaged its doors, but left no casualties.

Egypt police kill 2 Ajnad Misr militants in gun battle in Giza
2015-07-29
[AlAhram] Egyptian police have killed two men suspected of involvement in violence against the state, state news agency MENA reported late Monday.

A security source told MENA that police had obtained information that two members of the Islamist krazed killer group Ajnad Misr [Soldiers of Egypt] were present in an apartment on Faisal Street, Giza.

MENA reported that the "terrorists" opened fire on officers upon their arrival at the apartment, "prompting police to shoot [the two men] dead."

Ajnad Misr has grabbed credit for several deadly attacks against police in Cairo, including an kaboom near the Ittihadiya presidential palace in June 2014 that killed two coppers, and a blast outside the foreign ministry in September of the same year that also left two coppers dead.

Police also announced killing a leader of the group in April, Hammam Mohammed Attiyah, also in a shootout at an apartment in Cairo.
An Nahar adds:
Egyptian police potted two alleged jihadists suspected of involvement in the recent bombing of the Italian consulate in Cairo in a raid Monday on an apartment in the capital, security officials said.

"The two jihadists belonged to Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) and investigations reveal that they could be involved in the bombing of the Italian consulate," one official said, adding they were also wanted "for their role in assassinating coppers".

group had claimed the July 11 bombing of the consulate -- the first such attack on a foreign mission in Egypt since jihadists launched a campaign against the country's security forces two years ago following a crackdown on Islamists. A civilian was killed and nine others were maimed in the attack.

Police say Attiya previously belonged to Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State group, and that he broke away in 2013 to found Ajnad Misr, a group operating mainly in Cairo.

Cairo Blasts Strain Egypt's Bomb Squad
2015-05-17
[AnNahar] Egyptian bomb disposal expert Diaa Fathy had long predicted he would die in a flash, before that fateful day in January when a bomb went kaboom! on a busy road leading to the pyramids.

Fathy's death, captured in graphic video footage that went viral on the Internet, was not the first among the country's bomb disposal squad, which has defended its training program in the face of questions over its professionalism.

On January 6, the 30-year-old police captain was blown up as he tried to defuse a bomb hidden in a flower pot outside a petrol station in Cairo's Al-Haram street.

The small rudimentary bombs that regularly go off in Cairo bear no comparison to those used in strife-torn countries like Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistain that cause massive civilian casualties.

But they still pose a challenge for bomb squads.

"A bomb is a double-edged weapon. The one who dismantles it has to be better trained than the bomb-maker," an explosives expert who works in the Middle East told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"I don't think Egypt has well-trained bomb disposal experts... Even standard operating practices have not percolated down the cadre," causing casualties, he said.

Jihadist group Ajnad Misr claims it has killed four bomb disposal experts so far in Cairo, including Fathy.

It says its attacks are in retaliation for a government crackdown targeting supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, who was toppled by the military in July 2013.

The deadliest bombs in Cairo have targeted police, including outside a presidential palace, the foreign ministry and a university.

At least three coppers have been killed and several maimed in the capital in kabooms so far this year.

Fathy was not the first victim from the bomb disposal squad. In June 2014, two officers were blown up while dismantling two bombs near a presidential palace.

A video of one of the attacks shows an officer on the ground trying to defuse the bomb, while another, a general, bends over to watch when the device explodes. The general survived.

Ajnad Misr had warned two days earlier that it had planted bombs near the palace.

The incident showed the "need for a complete overhaul in the mentality of the squad, the way it thinks, the way it functions," a security adviser for a foreign embassy in Cairo said.

Defending his team, bomb squad chief General Mohammed Gamal insists his men are well-trained, including in the use of robots to defuse explosives.

"The rule is that the officer is not supposed to touch the bomb," said Gamal.

"He should be at a distance of a meter-and-a-half (five feet) from the explosive. Anything other than that is a personal choice."

Fathy's mother, Nagat al-Gafi, said her son would say a prayer before starting work and always used his hands to defuse bombs.

"He always said he would die at the snap of a finger," Gafi told AFP at the family home, where the entire top floor has been converted into a museum in his memory, displaying his uniforms, childhood photographs and posters of him with the words: "Groom of Heaven".

Gamal acknowledged his men might sometimes take potential threats lightly as they respond to a dozen calls a day from the public reporting "suspicious objects," many of them false alarms.

Captain Mohammed, a disposal expert, said he faces death every day in North Sinai, an krazed killer stronghold where he has been based for 11 years.

"On a daily basis, we get at least 10 calls and some are negative. I try to deal with the negative calls as if they were positive," said Mohammed, who gave only his first name for security reasons.

jihadist group is spearheading an insurgency in North Sinai that has killed scores of security personnel.

"From the number of calls I've dealt with, I can predict what will happen," said Mohammed, who was in Cairo for training on the use of protective wear.

Egypt Militant Group Confirms Chief's Killing
2015-04-10
[AnNahar] Egyptian jihadist group Ajnad Misr confirmed Thursday the death of its leader, Hammam Mohamed Attiyah, who police said was shot dead in a gunfight in Cairo.
A photo of the chubby miscreant at the link.
On Sunday, the interior ministry announced that Attiyah was killed in a Cairo apartment when security forces raided it, without saying when.

Police say Attiya previously belonged to Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State group, but broke away in 2013 to found Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) -- a small group operating mainly in Cairo.
Splitters!
"We are happy to announce to the Islamic nation and the mujahedeen the news of the martyrdom of the leader Hammam Attiyah," Ajnad Misr announced on Twitter.
We were happy to announce it, too. And we look forward to many more such announcements in the near future.
It said Attiyah had been succeeded by Ezz al-Din al-Masry, without providing any details about him.
Golly. "The Egyptian" -- such a useful description, under the circumstances.
Ajnad Misr said Attiyah had previously fought in Iraq and in Sinai.

In January, Ajnad Misr had aired a video interview of Attiyah, showing his face blurred and explaining the group's vision and strategies. It has claimed several bombings against security forces across the capital, including near important buildings such as presidential palaces and Cairo University.

Its attacks have not caused large numbers of casualties but killed several policemen. The group says it deliberately uses low-yield bombs to avoid harming civilians, although several of its attacks have caused civilian casualties.

Ajnad Misr says its attacks are in retaliation for a brutal government crackdown targeting supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

Founder of Islamist militant group Ajnad Misr killed: Police spokesman
2015-04-06
[AlAhram] Hamam Mohammed, the founder of Ajnad Misr, was also a former leading figure in the group now know as Sinai Province, that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in 2014

The founder of Islamist Lion of Islam group Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) and former leading member of Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis was killed in a confrontation with police forces, a spokesperson for Egypt's interior ministry said on Sunday.

Hamam Mohammed was hiding in a flat located in Giza's Haram district where he planned and prepared for attacks that targeted and killed coppers, General Hani Abdel-Latif said, according to Al-Ahram's Arabic website.

When Hamam became aware of the presence of the police forces that were about to raid his hideout, he shot up them before they shot and killed him, Abdel-Latif explained.

Hamam possessed an automatic firearm, a pistol, four bombs including one with a magnet so that it could be attached to a car, 18 incomplete bombs, materials used to make bombs and over EGP 76,000. He was wanted for a number of terror-related attacks.

Ajnad Misr has grabbed credit through social media for many of their Lion of Islam attacks that primarily targeted police forces over the past few months, mostly by planting basic bombs. The last operation they grabbed credit for was late last month when an improvised bomb detonated outside a metro station near Cairo University located in Giza.

Abdel-Latif outlined that Hamam was once a leading figure in the Sinai-based Lion of Islam group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, the group which has carried out many of the most violent attacks. It pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group in November 2014, changing its name to Sinai Province.

Hamam parted company with Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis in 2013 to found Ajnad Misr.

He trained a number of bully boyz on bomb making, Abdel-Latif said, adding that his group targeted police and military personnel in 26 operations.
...many of which went kaboom without accomplishing anything more than that.
Ynet adds:
Security forces had been following the movements of Hammam Mohammed Attia, 33, and surrounded the residential high-rise building in a busy neighborhood before raiding it at dawn Sunday.

Ajnad Misr, or Soldiers of Egypt, has grabbed credit for a bombing on a bridge leading to an upscale neighborhood in central Cairo that killed a policeman and maimed at least two passers-by earlier in the day.

Bomb Near Cairo University Wounds 8
2015-03-29
[AnNahar] A bomb maimed four civilians and four coppers outside Cairo University Saturday, Egyptian police and health officials said.

Several kabooms outside the university have taken place since the army ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in 2013, the last of which maimed five coppers in November.

The attacks were claimed by a Cairo-based bully boy group called Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt), but no one has yet claimed Saturday's kaboom.

The rudimentary bomb was placed at the exit of a metro station that serves the university, the police official said.

Health ministry front man Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said those maimed were "in stable, pH balanced condition."
The Times of Israel adds:
A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
because he was not authorized to speak to journalists, said 4 of the people injured on Saturday are coppers who were guarding the entrances to Cairo University.

The official said the blast went off by a subway entrance near the campus. Security officials have cordoned off the area and are sweeping for additional explosives.

One Dead in Cairo Bombings
2015-02-27
[AnNahar] One person was killed Thursday in a bombing outside a pizzeria in the Egyptian capital as other blasts hit a cop shoppe and offices of cell phone companies, a health official said.

The bomb tore off the legs of the victim who was pronounced dead in hospital, health ministry front man Hossam Abdel Ghaffar told AFP. Two other people were maimed.

The restaurant was next to a branch of the Britannia-based cell phone provider Vodafone.

Two other bombs targeted its offices in another neighborhood and a third bomb went off outside a branch of United Arab Emirates-owned Etisalat, damaging the store fronts but causing no casualties, interior ministry front man Hany Abdel Latif told AFP.

The offices were closed at the time of the kabooms.

Hours later, an kaboom outside a cop shoppe in the north of the capital maimed a police conscript and three passersby, police officials said.

It was not immediately clear why the cell phone companies were targeted, but Abdel Latif said authorities had been on the alert for attacks in the runup to parliamentary elections next month.

Militants have set off dozens of bombs in the capital since the army overthrew Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013 and cracked down on his supporters, killing hundreds of protesters in street festivities.

Most of the bombs have been rudimentary and caused no casualties.

But several have killed coppers, including two senior officers killed while attempting to defuse bombs planted outside the presidential palace in June last year.

Those bombs, and several others that killed coppers in Cairo, were claimed by the Ajnad Misr bully boy group.

most of their operatives last year.

Jihadists, who have focused their attacks on security forces, were also believed to be planning attacks on the embassies of countries that have backed the former army chief and now President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, officials have said.

Sisi was elected to office in May 2014 pledging to eradicate the bully boys, but has had limited success, especially in the Sinai where they are waging an insurgency.

In January, simultaneous boom-mobileings and mortar attacks on security headquarters in the peninsula killed at least 30 people, most of them soldiers.

In October, Death Eaters set off a truck bomb at a military checkpoint in the Sinai and then raided it, killing at least 30 soldiers and seizing heavy weapons.

The military has launched an unprecedented campaign in the rugged peninsula that borders Israel and the Gazoo Strip, deploying thousands of troops and carrying out repeated helicopter strikes against the bully boys.
