Pakistan Seeks Removal of Judge for Ordering Public Hanging of Musharraf |
2019-12-19 |
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's government announced Thursday that it was seeking to disqualify the head of a three-judge panel that ruled that the corpse of convicted former dictator Pervez Musharraf should be "hanged for three days" outside Parliament if he died before his execution. ![]() In its unprecedented short order announced this week, the special court issued a death sentence to the former military ruler for high treason for subverting the country's constitution in 2007. Musharraf, 76, has been living in self-imposed exile since 2016 and is undergoing medical treatment in a Dubai hospital. Avoiding gaol basically. The court has directed law enforcement officials to arrest the "fugitive-convict" to ensure the death sentence is carried out. But "if found dead, corpse be dragged to the D-Chowk, Islamabad, Pakistan, and be hanged for 03 days," the ruling said, referring to a place just outside the national Parliament. Top government officials told a hurriedly called news conference Thursday evening that they had decided to initiate legal proceedings against Judge Waqar Ahmad Seth for issuing a "despicable order" that they said was in violation of the constitution. ![]() "Our plea is that such a judge has got no authority to be a judge of any high court or the Supreme Court ... . [H]e must immediately be stopped from performing his official duties," said Pakistani Law Minister Farogh Naseem. This statement is honestly a beaut. I wish we could use it for so many others. Neither the constitution nor Islam allows public hangings, the minister said. Prominent Supreme Court attorney Aitzaz Ahsan compared the special court's ruling with the harsh Islamic justice of the radical Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan in the late 1990s, where public hangings and executions were common. The rest of it's at VOA... but this is enough. |

'Shameful': Legal fraternity condemns violent protest by lawyers in Lahore |
2019-12-12 |
[DAWN] As the protest by lawyers outside Lahore's Punjab 1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard 2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers 3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots.... Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Wednesday took an ugly turn, members of the legal fraternity slammed those protesters who resorted to violence. PPP leader and senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan, while talking to the media, said that the violence was "shameful and should be condemned". "Many of them will be candidates for the January election coming up. They want to become prominent. These people should not be allowed to even contest the elections. These lawyers are destroying the reputation of all lawyers. My head is bowed with shame," he said. "They have attacked a hospital. For black coats to break the glasses and enter wards ‐ this should never happen. Everyone who took part in this should not be voted for." Some members of the legal fraternity took to Twitter to express their concern and called for action to be taken against the lawyers for attacking a hospital. Lawyer Babar Sattar called the violence "abhorrent" and pointed out that "it isn't the first such incident". He said that the bar leaders should call for the cancellation of the licences of the lawyers involved. |

Justice delayed is justice denied |
2019-03-07 |
[DAILYTIMES.PK] It has now been 17 years since Mukhtaran Mai survived a brutal panchayat-ordered gang rape. Despite the astounding amount of time that has passed and the grizzly nature of the crime, she still hasn’t been able to get justice. It is no wonder that she showed more faith in God than anything elsewhile speaking to Daily Times regarding the Supreme Court’s recent adjournment of her case. Forced to run from pillar to post to receive justice, Mai’s only real ally at this point seems to be her attorney Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, who is representing her pro bono. Eight of the 14 men Mai accused of being involved in the rape continue to be on the lam. They continue to use legal loopholes in the Pak justice system to evade justice. On the case’s last hearing this past Wednesday, they showed up to the court without any legal representation, forcing the presiding judge to adjourn the case until March 27. It is unfortunate that these men have been given a rather long reprieve once again. What makes matters worse is that this is a country where members of the judiciary in the past have been seen jumping past all legal hurdles to order the construction of mega infrastructure projects etc., but a high profile rape case has taken ages to reach its logical conclusion. What causes more anguish to the victim is that the Lahore High Court had previously acquitted six of the previously convicted accused. The Pak justice system must now prove that it is able to protect women from such brutal crimes. Apart from this, it must also prove that it is able to crack down on the parallel systems of justice that order such heinous sentences. Mai’s case must not face any more delays. The case must be expedited so justice can be served and seen to be served, once and for all. |

"The PPP did not vote in the prime minister's elections, which resulted in Imran Khan ![]() ... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems... becoming the PM by four votes," Rehman said in a presser in Islamabad. "The act of dividing up the opposition is not popular in the public. The JUI leader said he "would like to meet Zardari today" to convince him to withdraw PPP nominee Aitzaz Ahsan's candidacy in his favour. Rehman said the he and PML-N both "wanted the opposition's prime minister candidate to be from the PPP. "However, a woman is only as old as she admits... the PPP people themselves said that the PM candidate should be from the PML-N. When a consensus was reached, then [the PPP] decided not to vote, which dispersed the opposition, and turned our hope ‐ our decision to go into the parliament and turn the tables ‐ into disappointment and despair." |

In an interview to Waqt News, Imran Khan said the Panama issue should have ideally been resolved in the parliament. PTI had to come on the roads on being denied justice in the parliament, he averred. He extended his gratitude towards his supporters who stood by him against corruption and whose support made the rulers accountable. The PTI chief said Gen Zia ul Haq ![]() had brought Nawaz Sharif in politics by holding non-party-based elections in 1985. Answering a question, Imran said 20 years back, he joined politics because nobody was prepared at that time to speak against corruption. Sounding optimistic regarding the Panama outcome, Imran said he was about to achieve his objective against corruption after 20 years. He said: "It must be ascertained who is lying, Nawaz Sharif or his children. It has been proven that the country’s plundered money was sent abroad to purchase the London flats and set up offshore companies. BBC has also made a documentary on it." Khan affirmed he was desirous of engaging Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan as his counsel in the Panama case, but he didn’t do so because of his affiliation with PPP. |

Panama Papers' inquiry: Opposition leaders agree upon ToRs, Nawaz and family to be probed first |
2016-05-04 |
[DAWN] Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) big shot Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, briefing the media on Tuesday after a meeting conducted by opposition parties to decide the Terms of Reference (ToR), said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... and his family should be the first to be probed under an inquiry commission set-up to probe Panama Papers. "The process of accountability needs to be initiated, and the prime minister and his family should be the first to be probed by the inquiry commission set-up to investigate the Panama Papers," said Ahsan. "In our earlier meeting, it was decided by all opposition parties that the ToRs presented earlier by the government were unacceptable." Regarding the formation of an inquiry commission, Ahsan said a special act would be drafted, the Panama Papers Inquiry and Trial Act, under which the inquiry commission would be formed ─ under the supervision of the chief justice ─ to investigate the prime minister and his family in three months. The prime minister and his family should be probed in an international investigation in to the matter, stated the PPP leader. He added that all foreign assets, how they were obtained, how much tax was paid, which year they were bought in and what funds were used in their purchase needs to be investigated. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... has threatened to resort to "street agitation" if ToRs were not finalised in consultation with opposition parties. |
