The death row convicts are JMB members Shariful Islam, a student of RU’s English Department, and Maskawat Hasan of Bogura’s Shibganj, who also goes by Abdullah and Sakib. "Shariful was the one who planned my father’s murder. But he is still free. This is unacceptable. We wanted to see his trial first." The defence counsels have already said they would move the High Court against the verdict. Youths living in remote areas of Thanchi and Ali Kadam, bordering Myanmar, received these letters recently. Panicking, they are now reportedly taking shelter in Thanchi upazila. Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jahangir Alam confirmed receipt of the letters. Written in Burmese, the letter asked old members of the group to participate in training slated for March 31. 2 razakars to die for war crimes in Kishoreganj |
2017-04-20 |
[Dhaka Tribune] A special tribunal has sentenced two collaborators to death for their involvement in the murder of over 26 people, the abduction and detention of 11 people and the arson and looting of some 250 houses during the 1971 Liberation War in the then Kishoreganj sub division. The three-member International Crimes Tribunal headed by Justice Anwarul Haque pronounced the judgment on Tuesday afternoon, in the presence of Muhammad Moslem Pradhan, 66, one of the convicts. The other convict, Syed Mohammad Hussain alias Hossain, 64, is absconding. Hussain, the younger brother of convicted war criminal Syed Hasan Ali, was the commander of the Nikli unit razakar force during the Liberation War. Moslem was his associate and collaborated with him in committing crimes. The tribunal asked the home secretary and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest the runaway, with the help of Interpol, if needed. In the verdict, the tribunal sentenced both convicts to death for the killing of 26 people at Gurui village under Nikli upazila and jail until death for the abduction and murder of freedom fighter Abdul Malek at Purbonagar village. Considering the prosecution’s request to deem rape and forced religious conversions as equal to genocide, Hussain was also sentenced to death for participating in and abetting the murder of 34 Hindu men and the rape of many Hindu women at Dampara. He also received a seven years’s imprisonment sentence for the forceful conversion of Hindu people at Dampara. Hussain was further sentenced to five years’ jail for the abduction and confinement of four people in Nilki and to ten years in jail for mistreating the dead bodies of two freedom fighters. Prosecutor Tureen Afroz said they were happy with the verdict. However, some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go... the convicts’ counsel Abdus Sattar Palwan said they may file an appeal with the Supreme Court. |

Dhaka cafe attack suspect dies in custody after 'torture' |
2016-07-10 |
![]() Zakir Hossain Shawon, 18, a kitchen assistant at the Holey Artisan Bakery, was tossed in the clink Please don't kill me! after last week's deadly siege by suspected forces of Evil in which 22 people, including 18 foreigners, died. Police killed five attackers and arrested Shawon together with another man over "suspicious activities", treating him as a suspect -- a claim vehemently rejected by his family, who claim he was taken hostage like other victims. He died in the intensive care unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital late Friday after five days in the clinic, police and his family said. Shawon's father Abdus Sattar demanded an investigation into his death, saying his "innocent son and the main breadwinner of his family" died due to torture. "His whole body had marks of torture. There were marks of curdled blood in many places. One of his eyes and two knees were blackened. His wrists were blackened. It seems he was hanged by ropes tied to his wrists," Sattar told AFP. Nur Khan Liton, the head of Ain o Salish Kendra, a leading human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... group, said there were doubts about Shawon's involvement in the attack, which was claimed by the turban Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... group. "IS has named five attackers and police have identified all five. And he was not among the five," he said. "If he was treated as an associate or helper of the attacker, police must present evidence or information." Police and military representatives denied that Shawon had been tortured in jug. "He was held because of suspicious activities. We did not have any opportunity to interrogate him since he was injured and hospitalised," Dhaka police front man Masudur Rahman told AFP. The teenager's father said he spoke with his son hours before the July 1 carnage when Shawon called to say he had received a bonus payment for Eidul Fitr. He had planned to travel home to celebrate the occasion with the family in Dhaka's suburb. Instead his family saw him in hospital following the attack in Dhaka's upscale Gulshan neighbourhood. "He could not recognise me or his mother and thought we were his brother," the father said. "He would cry out in his sleep, pleading with someone, "Please don't hit me. Let me go," he added. Eid attack Meanwhile the country's police chief said Saturday that Lions of Islam from Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), a local turban group blamed by the government for the cafe siege, were behind a separate attack on an Eid gathering. Bangladesh's home minister last week said the banned JMB carried out the Gulshan cafe attack despite the Islamic State group claiming responsibility. Attackers carrying bombs and machetes killed at least three people at a huge prayer rally marking the start of the Moslem festival in the northern town of Sholakia on Thursday. "(The perpetrators) are members of JMB. They did it (the attack) in Gulshan and they also did it here," Inspector General of Police Shahidul Hoque told news hounds in Sholakia. Police have arrested one person over the Eid attack. |

Swat attack on Malala: War of words in Senate over policy about militancy |
2012-10-12 |
[Dawn] ![]() ...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat... girl Malala Yousufzai to blame one another's policies about militancy. Though, all the senators belonging to major political parties were unanimous in condemning the dastardly attack, a clear divide was visible in the house between those supporting the ongoing war on terror and those opposing it. Senator Mushahidullah Khan of the opposition Pakistain Mohammedan League-N (PML-N) joined the religious-minded senators in declaring that the war on terror was not in the country's interests and that it had been imposed on Pakistain by the US. On the other hand, the PPP senators said that those who believed that it was not Pakistain's war were "living in the fool's paradise". When some senators, particularly those belonging to the Awami National Party (ANP) and Hasil Bizenjo of the National Party (NP), opposed the role of religion in state affairs and called for propagating secular views in the country, they were bitterly criticised by members belonging to the religious parties. ![]() Giving an example, Mr Ahsan flayed the government's decision of blocking YouTube website, and said if there was one "filthy book" in a library containing 10 million books then it did not mean that the whole library should be closed. Mr Rabbani was of the view that the country was facing the present confusing situation due to the "failure of the democratic, progressive and political forces which have always made compromises and digressed from the ideological path set by the Quaid-e-Azam". An independent senator from tribal areas, Saleh Shah, and Hasil Bizenjo of the NP in their speeches took the ANP -- the ruling party in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa ... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central... (KP) -- to task for entering into an agreement with Maulana Sufi Muhammad for enforcement of Nizam-e-Adl in Swat in 2009 which, according to them, provided an opportunity to the Taliban to get hold of the area. ![]() Mr Khattak alleged that it was the five-year rule of the religious parties' alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) in the province that allowed the gun-hung tough guys to propagate their views through 30 FM channels. It was during the MMA's rule that the Taliban were allowed to transport arms and ammunition by using roads. ANP's Haji Adeel warned that if the political parties did not take a clear stance on the issue of terrorism, the country would become a fundamentalist state. Another ANP Senator Shahi Syed claimed that the Taliban had forced the party to close a number of its offices in the city of Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... . Without naming the MQM, he said that those who were celebrating the closure of their offices would be the next target of the Taliban. Senator Nasreen Jalil of the MQM said the political parties which had allowed the Taliban to stay in their strongholds should be asked to clarify their stance whether they supported the vision of the Quaid-e-Azam or that of the Taliban. Senator Hasil Bizenjo held the policies of former military dictator Gen Zia ul Haq ![]() responsible for the rise in extremism and sectarianism, saying that it was Gen Zia who had made the religion a state property. He alleged that the state even today was promoting religious extremism. "You cannot stop extremism without separating religion from state," he said. ![]() ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula.
