RU Prof Rezaul murder: Two JMB men to die, 3 get life term
2018-05-09
[Dhaka Tribune] Two members of banned bad boy outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) have been sentenced to death and three others to life imprisonment for killing Rajshahi University (RU) teacher Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique in 2016.

After examining the evidence, records and testimonies of the witnesses, Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal’s judge Shirin Kabita Akhter delivered the verdict on Tuesday with three of the convicts on the doc.

The death row convicts are JMB members Shariful Islam, a student of RU’s English Department, and Maskawat Hasan of Bogura’s Shibganj, who also goes by Abdullah and Sakib.

Both of them were the criminal masterminds behind the gruesome murder, according to Public Prosecutor (PP) Entazul Haque Babu. Shariful, who has been in hiding since the killing, was tried in absentia.

The other three convicts are Rahmat Ullah of Nilphamari’s Mianpara, Abdus Sattar and his son Ripon Ali of the city’s Narkelbaria area.

Sattar was out on bail till now while the other convicts are currently behind bars.

In her immediate reaction to the judgement, Prof Rezaul’s daughter Rizwana Hasin Shotovi said: "We are happy with this verdict although it would have been more satisfying if all the accused were awarded the death penalty
. We just hope it will be upheld in the High Court and executed swiftly."

"But we want to see runaway Shariful placed in durance vile
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
as soon as possible," she said expressing frustration. "Shariful was the one who planned my father’s murder. But he is still free. This is unacceptable. We wanted to see his trial first."

The defence counsels have already said they would move the High Court against the verdict.

Prof Rezaul, 58, a teacher at RU’s English Department, was hacked to death only 50 yards away from his home in the city’s Shalbagan area while he was waiting for a university bus in the morning of April 23, 2016.

According to police, he was a victim of assassinations orchestrated across the country by bad boys.

Rezaul’s son Sourov Hossain later filed the murder case at Boalia cop shoppe.

Police had submitted the charge sheet against eight JMB members November 6, 2016, more than six months after the killing.

Of them, Khairul Islam Badhan, Nazrul Islam alias Bike Hasan and Tareque Hasan alias Nilu alias Osman were killed in reported shootouts with police in Rajshahi and Bogra in different instances.

Panic in the hills with call to join Arakan Army
2018-03-31
[Dhaka Tribune] Panic has spread in the hilly areas of Bandarban after Myanmar-based Arakan Army (AA) sent letters to Bangladeshi youths, inviting them to join the turban group.

Youths living in remote areas of Thanchi and Ali Kadam, bordering Myanmar, received these letters recently.

Panicking, they are now reportedly taking shelter in Thanchi upazila.

Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jahangir Alam confirmed receipt of the letters.

Written in Burmese, the letter asked old members of the group to participate in training slated for March 31. It also asked the members to recruit young people from the hilly areas.

Following the letter, the local administration, public representatives, and security forces, held a meeting on Tuesday with Thanchi UNO, Jahangir Alam, in the chair. A number of youths of the border areas also reportedly attended the meeting. The meeting asked the youths not to panic.

Locals in the border areas said some Marma youths have already joined the group out of fear, while others have escaped their homes.

Thanchi Upazila Chairman Kwa Hla Ching Marma said: "The letter invited Bangladeshi youths to join the Arakan Army. We have already held a meeting on the matter."

"But the location of the Arakan Army camp was not mentioned in the letter. We also do not know where the camp is. We have directed all to be alert."

Anupam Marma is a local journalist of Thanchi who knows Burmese. He said: "According to the letter, a 15-day training will begin on March 31. Those interested are requested to come to the camp by March 28. At the end of the letter it mentioned Camp-2, Battalion No 215, Rakhine Army."

He said many young people have already taken shelter with their relatives out of fear.

Thanchi cop shoppe Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Sattar said: "I have heard about the letter. But I did not attend the meeting held this week on behalf of the administration. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is looking into the matter since these are border areas."

Bolipara BGB Battalion acting captain Major Ruhul Amin said: "We have already held a meeting with the administration. Our battalion members remain alert on the border s."

"We have already discussed the issue. There is no need to worry about it," said Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Md Aslam Hossain.

2 razakars to die for war crimes in Kishoreganj
2017-04-20
[Dhaka Tribune] A special tribunal has sentenced two collaborators to death for their involvement in the murder of over 26 people, the abduction and detention of 11 people and the arson and looting of some 250 houses during the 1971 Liberation War in the then Kishoreganj sub division.

The three-member International Crimes Tribunal headed by Justice Anwarul Haque pronounced the judgment on Tuesday afternoon, in the presence of Muhammad Moslem Pradhan, 66, one of the convicts.

The other convict, Syed Mohammad Hussain alias Hossain, 64, is absconding.

Hussain, the younger brother of convicted war criminal Syed Hasan Ali, was the commander of the Nikli unit razakar force during the Liberation War.

Moslem was his associate and collaborated with him in committing crimes.

The tribunal asked the home secretary and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest the runaway, with the help of Interpol, if needed.

In the verdict, the tribunal sentenced both convicts to death for the killing of 26 people at Gurui village under Nikli upazila and jail until death for the abduction and murder of freedom fighter Abdul Malek at Purbonagar village.

Considering the prosecution’s request to deem rape and forced religious conversions as equal to genocide, Hussain was also sentenced to death for participating in and abetting the murder of 34 Hindu men and the rape of many Hindu women at Dampara.

He also received a seven years’s imprisonment sentence for the forceful conversion of Hindu people at Dampara.

Hussain was further sentenced to five years’ jail for the abduction and confinement of four people in Nilki and to ten years in jail for mistreating the dead bodies of two freedom fighters.

Prosecutor Tureen Afroz said they were happy with the verdict. However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
the convicts’ counsel Abdus Sattar Palwan said they may file an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Dhaka cafe attack suspect dies in custody after 'torture'
2016-07-10
[DAWN] A Bangladeshi teenager who police say was a suspect in last week's deadly attack on a Dhaka cafe has died in jug, with his family insisting he was a hostage and alleging torture by security forces.

Zakir Hossain Shawon, 18, a kitchen assistant at the Holey Artisan Bakery, was tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
after last week's deadly siege by suspected forces of Evil in which 22 people, including 18 foreigners, died.

Police killed five attackers and arrested Shawon together with another man over "suspicious activities", treating him as a suspect -- a claim vehemently rejected by his family, who claim he was taken hostage like other victims.

He died in the intensive care unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital late Friday after five days in the clinic, police and his family said.

Shawon's father Abdus Sattar demanded an investigation into his death, saying his "innocent son and the main breadwinner of his family" died due to torture.

"His whole body had marks of torture. There were marks of curdled blood in many places. One of his eyes and two knees were blackened. His wrists were blackened. It seems he was hanged by ropes tied to his wrists," Sattar told AFP.

Nur Khan Liton, the head of Ain o Salish Kendra, a leading human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
group, said there were doubts about Shawon's involvement in the attack, which was claimed by the turban Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

"IS has named five attackers and police have identified all five. And he was not among the five," he said.

"If he was treated as an associate or helper of the attacker, police must present evidence or information." Police and military representatives denied that Shawon had been tortured in jug.

"He was held because of suspicious activities. We did not have any opportunity to interrogate him since he was injured and hospitalised," Dhaka police front man Masudur Rahman told AFP.

The teenager's father said he spoke with his son hours before the July 1 carnage when Shawon called to say he had received a bonus payment for Eidul Fitr.

He had planned to travel home to celebrate the occasion with the family in Dhaka's suburb.

Instead his family saw him in hospital following the attack in Dhaka's upscale Gulshan neighbourhood. "He could not recognise me or his mother and thought we were his brother," the father said.

"He would cry out in his sleep, pleading with someone, "Please don't hit me. Let me go," he added.

Eid attack
Meanwhile the country's police chief said Saturday that Lions of Islam from Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), a local turban group blamed by the government for the cafe siege, were behind a separate attack on an Eid gathering.

Bangladesh's home minister last week said the banned JMB carried out the Gulshan cafe attack despite the Islamic State group claiming responsibility.

Attackers carrying bombs and machetes killed at least three people at a huge prayer rally marking the start of the Moslem festival in the northern town of Sholakia on Thursday.

"(The perpetrators) are members of JMB. They did it (the attack) in Gulshan and they also did it here," Inspector General of Police Shahidul Hoque told news hounds in Sholakia.

Police have arrested one person over the Eid attack.

Robber killed in gunfight
2016-06-22
[Dhaka Tribune] A robber was killed and three police personnel were also injured
...a splinter, a stubbed toe, and a blister on a trigger finger...
in a shootout between his cohorts and police at Rasulpur village in Sarail upazila of the district early yesterday.

The dear departed was Abdus Sattar, 32, a resident of Rasulpur-Rifiujipara village of the upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Sarail Police Station Rupok Kumar Saha said police tossed in the slammer
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
Sattar from his house in Rifiujipara village on Monday evening.

Based on his information, a team of police along with Sattar conducted a drive in Rasulpur graveyard area to recover arms at about 1.15 am.
Was the graveyard next to a banana grove?
Spider senses tingling at the proximity of the law enforcers, associates of Sattar shot up them. In retaliation, the law enforcers also opened fire leading to a shootout for sometimes.
It took just long enough for those two bullets, one each behind each ear for thoroughness. Longer would have been wasteful.
Sattar was caught in line of the fire and was struck down in his prime while his associates managed to flee the scene.
... as though they had never been...

Did Sattar make it as far as the Dhaka Medical Center Trauma Unit door or did he go straight to Dr. Quincy?
Three coppers including a sub inspector were also injured during the shootout.
Injuries covered at the top of the story, and all have recovered by now.
Sattar was wanted in twelve systems eight cases including for robbery, the OC added.
And so, dear Reader, a good time was had by all, excepting the former miscreant, of course.

[DAWN] HARIPUR: The body of an eight-year-old girl stuffed in a sack was found near Jabba-Sirikot bypass here on Saturday morning.

According to police, the unidentified slain girl was wearing blue shirt, white trouser (shalwar) and white scarf (dupatta). She also bore some visible marks of rope around her neck.

Talking to Dawn by telephone, Abdus Sattar, Station House Officer of Ghazi cop shoppe, said he was informed by the people that a sack containing something was lying near the Jabba-Sirikot bypass.

"I drove straight to the place and got opened the sack, which contained the body of a girl wearing school uniform."

It seems that some miscreants had kidnapped and killed her somewhere else and dumped her body here to conceal their crime, he said, adding that so far no one had come to collect the body.

To a question, the police official said it was too early to establish that the innocent girl was molested before her murder because the hospital had yet not sent them a medical report in this respect.

Youth arrested for publicising 'al-Qaeda clip'
2014-02-19
[Dhaka Tribune] RAB personnel yesterday claimed to have tossed in the slammer
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
a youth for publicising the "audio clip of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
" by uploading it in different websites over a month ago, which came into notice on Saturday.

Apart from having al-Qaeda links, the RAB officials said the youth had also sent super-imposed fake photographs regarding the rally of Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
on May 5 and 6 last year to the president of Iran on May 7 through an e-mail titled "Mass killing on protesters in Dhaka at night by armed joint force at least killed thousands."

Identified as Rasel Bin Sattar Khan, a final year student of jute technology department at Tangail Textile Institute, the youth was arrested early yesterday at a mess in Majhipara area under Mirzapur upazila of Tangail.

RAB said they had recovered three mobile phones, two laptops and some jihadi books from his possession. Rasel is the son of Abdus Sattar Khan of Kaliganj in Gazipur.

After the arrest, the 21-year-old youth was taken to Dhaka and a press briefing was held at the RAB headquarters in Uttara. The detainee was allowed to speak before the media.

Rasel said: "I am responsible for the publicity of the clip.

"I got notification about it from a Facebook page 'Dawa illallah' after I liked the page. Later I posted it on two pages -- amardeshvabna.blogspot.com and islameralo.wordpress.com.

"I liked the page since I have interests in Islamic sites," he said.

Col Ziaul Ahsan, additional director general of RAB (operations), said: "Rasel is the main receiver and propagator of the clip. He is also the admin of 'Basherkella,' a page of Islami Chhatra Shibir
... the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh...
on Facebook."

He said Rasel's activities showed that he had connections with al-Qaeda and international militancy. "He was also working as their agent."

"Basherkella" having over 6,50,000 subscribers was surfaced after youths launched the unprecedented movement at Shahbagh in February last year demanding death sentence for all war criminals and a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
and its students' wing Chhatra Shibir. The page has been campaigning against the war trial and instructed supporters how to attack the government and the pro-liberation people on the streets during demonstrations of the then 18-party alliance.

According to RAB officials, the audio clip (in Arabic, having subtitles in English and photographs in the footage) was first uploaded in "Dawa illallah" over two and a half months ago at 6:30am on November 30 last year.

"But it was publicised in Bangladesh after Rasel uploaded it in different websites on January 14," Ziaul said.

He, however, said they were yet to confirm whether the voice in the clip was of Zawahiri. "We are verifying it."

According to the senior Rab official, "Dawa illallah" is maintained by a Pakistain-based organization named "Bala Media."

Ziaul said after Rasel uploaded the clip in the YouTube on January 14, it was also uploaded in another website named Jihadology.net the same day.

"Though he is a student of jute technology, Rasel has expertise in Information Technology. He is seriously active in Facebook and blogging and uses several IDs."

Rasel also maintained different other pages including "drishtivongi" and "gonotontranipatjak" in which he had uploaded bomb making tips, said the RAB official.

Swat attack on Malala: War of words in Senate over policy about militancy
2012-10-12
[Dawn] Political rivals in the Senate on Wednesday used the debate on the terrorist attack on Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
girl Malala Yousufzai to blame one another's policies about militancy.

Though, all the senators belonging to major political parties were unanimous in condemning the dastardly attack, a clear divide was visible in the house between those supporting the ongoing war on terror and those opposing it.

Senator Mushahidullah Khan of the opposition Pakistain Mohammedan League-N (PML-N) joined the religious-minded senators in declaring that the war on terror was not in the country's interests and that it had been imposed on Pakistain by the US.

On the other hand, the PPP senators said that those who believed that it was not Pakistain's war were "living in the fool's paradise".

When some senators, particularly those belonging to the Awami National Party (ANP) and Hasil Bizenjo of the National Party (NP), opposed the role of religion in state affairs and called for propagating secular views in the country, they were bitterly criticised by members belonging to the religious parties.

The two stalwarts of the ruling Pakistain People's Party (PPP) -- Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan and Raza Rabbani -- held the state responsible for the rising tide of militancy and extremism in the country because it always made compromises and never stood firmly against the forces exploiting religion.

Giving an example, Mr Ahsan flayed the government's decision of blocking YouTube website, and said if there was one "filthy book" in a library containing 10 million books then it did not mean that the whole library should be closed.

Mr Rabbani was of the view that the country was facing the present confusing situation due to the "failure of the democratic, progressive and political forces which have always made compromises and digressed from the ideological path set by the Quaid-e-Azam".

An independent senator from tribal areas, Saleh Shah, and Hasil Bizenjo of the NP in their speeches took the ANP -- the ruling party in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KP) -- to task for entering into an agreement with Maulana Sufi Muhammad for enforcement of Nizam-e-Adl in Swat in 2009 which, according to them, provided an opportunity to the Taliban to get hold of the area.

ANP's Afrasiab Khattak and Ilyas Bilour, however, defended their provincial government's decision and said that it was actually done to provide an opportunity to the fighting Taliban to come to the negotiating table, They said when the agreement brought no results, a massive operation was launched in Swat and the gun-hung tough guys were expelled from the area.

Mr Khattak alleged that it was the five-year rule of the religious parties' alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) in the province that allowed the gun-hung tough guys to propagate their views through 30 FM channels. It was during the MMA's rule that the Taliban were allowed to transport arms and ammunition by using roads.

ANP's Haji Adeel warned that if the political parties did not take a clear stance on the issue of terrorism, the country would become a fundamentalist state.

Another ANP Senator Shahi Syed claimed that the Taliban had forced the party to close a number of its offices in the city of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
. Without naming the MQM, he said that those who were celebrating the closure of their offices would be the next target of the Taliban.

Senator Nasreen Jalil of the MQM said the political parties which had allowed the Taliban to stay in their strongholds should be asked to clarify their stance whether they supported the vision of the Quaid-e-Azam or that of the Taliban.

Senator Hasil Bizenjo held the policies of former military dictator Gen Zia ul Haq
...the creepy-looking former dictator of Pakistain. Zia was an Islamic nutball who imposed his nutballery on the rest of the country with the enthusiastic assistance of the nation's religious parties, which are populated by other nutballs. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976 by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, whom he hanged when he seized power. His time in office was a period of repression, with hundreds of thousands of political rivals, minorities, and journalists executed or tortured, including senior general officers convicted in coup-d'état plots, who would normally be above the law. As part of his alliance with the religious parties, his government helped run the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, providing safe havens, American equipiment, Saudi money, and Pak handlers to selected mujaheddin. Zia died along with several of his top generals and admirals and the then United States Ambassador to Pakistain Arnold Lewis Raphel when he was assassinated in a suspicious air crash near Bahawalpur in 1988...
responsible for the rise in extremism and sectarianism, saying that it was Gen Zia who had made the religion a state property. He alleged that the state even today was promoting religious extremism. "You cannot stop extremism without separating religion from state," he said.

Referring to the recent sectarian killings in Quetta, Mr Bizenjo alleged that the city was witnessing a war between the groups backed by two countries. He claimed the group backed by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
was killing those who were believed to have their origin from Iraq.

Mufti Abdus Sattar of the JUI-F said that Islam was the state religion under Article 2 of the Constitution and those who spoke against Islam were actually anti-state people.

Senator Saleh Shah said that everyone was condemning the attack on Malala but regretted that no one talked about other similar girls being killed in drone attacks in Fata and Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
