Al-Qanou is the latest high-ranking operative targeted since Israel resumed its strikes on Gaza. The group said in a statement it mourned the loss of al-Qanou, who was killed in what it called a "direct" strike on a tent he was in. The same strike maimed several people, while separate attacks killed at least six in Gaza City and one in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, medical sources said. Earlier this week, Israel killed Ismail Barhoum, a member of Hamas’s political office, and Salah al-Bardaweel, another big shot. Both Bardaweel and Barhoum were members of the 20-member Hamas decision-making body, the political office, 11 of whom have been killed since the start of the war in late 2023, according to Hamas sources. Last week, Israel ended a two-month-old ceasefire by resuming bombing and ground operations, increasing pressure on Hamas to free the remaining hostages in its captivity. At least 830 people have been killed since Israel resumed major military strikes in Gaza on March 18, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, pushing the total killed over the course of the war to over 50,000. The figures are not independently verified and do not differentiate between combatants and civilians.
Another strike near Gaza City killed four children and their parents, according to the emergency service of Gaza’s Health Ministry. The group claimed they are "doing everything possible to keep the occupation’s captives alive, but the random Zionist bombardment is endangering their lives." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to hit back at Hamas during a speech in the Knesset, warning that Israel would seize territory in Gaza if Hamas continued to refuse to release the remaining hostages. "The more Hamas persists in its refusal to release our hostages, the stronger the pressure we will exert," Netanyahu said in the plenum. "This includes the seizure of territories, along with other measures I will not elaborate here." This is Hamas’s first on-the-record response to the anti-Hamas and anti-war demonstrations in Gaza in the last few days.
“Residents have no water or electricity. Hamas is destroying Gaza and making us into stones, they must be removed from power. We won’t stop demonstrating, Hamas needs to be flexible and release the hostages.” Demonstrators carrying banners reading, “Hamas does not represent us,” were seen marching in Gaza City and the town of Beit Lahiya in the north of the territory. In Beit Lahiya, where a similar but far smaller protest took place Tuesday, about 3,000 people demonstrated Wednesday, with many chanting, “The people want the fall of Hamas.” In the hard-hit Shejaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City, dozens of men chanted, “Out, out out! Israel said readying for three hostages to be freed Saturday, still pushing for more |
2025-02-14 |
[IsraelTimes] Netanyahu meets defense brass as report indicates bid to pressure Hamas into expediting releases of six others in first stage; don’t get your hopes up, Arab diplomat cautions Hamas ![]() said Thursday it would release three Israeli hostages as planned Saturday, backing off a threat to delay the next release of captives after accusing Israel of failing to meet its obligations to allow tents and shelters, among other alleged violations of the truce. Israel was reported to be pushing for further live hostages to be released in the upcoming days, but a senior Arab official told The Times of Israel that it was unlikely that Hamas would deviate from the original timeframe of the agreement. Underscoring the fragility of the ceasefire and hostage release arrangement, a rocket was fired from Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... for the first time since fighting halted last month, reportedly killing a Paleostinian teen inside the Strip and drawing the second Israeli military strike in as many days. In southern Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz spent several hours huddling with top military commanders and security officials Thursday evening, as Jerusalem reportedly sought to pile more pressure on the Hamas terror group to begin releasing hostages sooner than previously agreed. Israel has said it will resume fighting if the hostages are not freed, and appeared to endorse US President Donald Trump ...They hit him with slander, they impeached him twice. It said in a statement that the mediators had pledged to "remove all hurdles." Netanyahu’s office earlier denied a report No, no! Certainly not! that it would let mobile homes and earth-moving equipment into the Strip, calling it "fake news." "There is no entry of mobile homes or heavy equipment into Gaza, and there is no coordination for it," Netanyahu front man Omer Dostri said. Nonetheless, Egyptian media aired footage showing trucks carrying temporary housing and bulldozers on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing with Gaza. They reported that the trucks were heading to an Israeli inspection area before crossing into Gaza. Hamas front man Abdul Latif al-Qanou later confirmed to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named by phone that three hostages would be released on Saturday. Under the terms of the ceasefire that went into effect last month, 17 hostages are still slated to be released under the deal’s first stage, nine of whom are believed to still be alive. Recent weeks have seen the group release 16 Israelis and five Thai hostages under the arrangement, which also requires Israel to free some 2,000 Paleostinian security prisoners, including hundreds of snuffies serving life and long terms. Even as the hostage releases appeared to get back on track, a rare rocket launch Thursday afternoon briefly raised concerns that the sides could decide to resume fighting. Footage showed the rocket appear to strike inside Gaza. According to Paleostinian media reports, the projectile landed in the Nuseirat area in the Strip’s center, killing a 14-year-old boy. A source in the Hamas-run police claimed the rocket was an unwent kaboom!Israeli ordinance that had ignited and had gun sex while it was being moved away from a residential area. The Israel Defense Forces said it struck the source of the launch in the Bureij camp in central Gaza. On Wednesday, the IDF said it carried out a dronezap against Gazooks attempting to collect a smuggled UAV in Rafah, killing one. At the IDF’s Southern Command headquarters in Beersheba, Netanyahu met with defense brass for over 4 hours to examine the IDF’s operational plans "for various scenarios," an Israeli official said. Attending the meeting were Katz, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, and incoming chief of staff Maj. Gen. (res.) Eyal Zamir, Shin Bet director Ronen Bar, and head of the IDF Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yaron Finkelman. Israeli officials were expecting Hamas on Friday to name the three it intends to release over the weekend, Channel 12 news reported. According to the station, which did not cite a source for the information, Jerusalem was also pushing mediators, Qatar, Egypt and the US, to pressure Hamas to expedite the release of the other six living hostages ahead of their scheduled release dates on February 22 and March 1. Israel has been pushing to speed up the releases since Saturday, when hostages Eli Sharabi, Or Levy and Ohad Ben Ami were released looking emaciated. Freed hostages have recounted being subjected to torture, starvation, and inhumane living conditions by their captors. A senior Arab diplomat told The Times of Israel that Hamas was not expected to release additional hostages either on Saturday or in the immediate days that followed, as this is not what was stipulated in the agreement. "We got Hamas to agree to release the hostages on Saturday, after it was threatening not to release any of them. To assume that they will go beyond that would be a stretch," the diplomat says. The fragile ceasefire was thrown into doubt on Monday when Hamas announced that it wouldn’t release any hostages on Saturday as planned, accusing Israel of preventing aid from reaching the Strip, which Israel denied. Trump then warned that "hell" would break loose if Hamas failed to release all the hostages being held in Gaza by Saturday. The terror group is holding 73 people kidnapped from Israel on October 7, 2023, including at least 35 bodies. It is also holding two civilians who entered the enclave around a decade ago, and the remains of a soldier killed fighting there in 2014. Following Trump’s remarks, Netanyahu said Israel would resume "intense fighting" in Gaza if Hamas did not return the hostages by Saturday noon. Israel then put out a series of conflicting statements saying Hamas must release "our hostages," "nine hostages," and "all of them" for the ceasefire to continue. Despite the tough talk, Israel had reportedly sent a message to Hamas through Egypt and Qatar that the deal would continue if the terror group released three hostages as scheduled on Saturday. Appearing to confirm the climb-down, government front man David Mencer told news hounds Thursday that Hamas must release three live hostages Saturday. "If those three are not released, if Hamas does not return our hostages, by Saturday noon, the ceasefire will end," he said. US hostage envoy Adam Boehler argued Thursday night that Hamas only agreed to walk back from its threat not to release three hostages this weekend because of Trump’s threat. "At the end of the day, the president has seen movement, and who knows what would happen if he wasn’t there," Boehler told Fox News. "But it’s not enough," he clarified. "We still have seven Americans that are there, and we’re not going to stop until that’s [not] the case. I hope that Hamas is hearing loud and clear from the president united states that they’ve got to address that issue immediately." Asked if Trump’s threat remains in place, Boehler responded, "That’s the current message of the president United States." But the hostage envoy then added that Trump "reserves the right to change or adjust as he sees fit." The threat to the future of the ceasefire had drawn thousands of Israeli protesters onto the streets this week, calling on the government to stick with the deal and bring the remaining hostages home. |

‘Alarming lack of transparency:' Amnesty slams latest Iraq prisoner executions |
2024-05-10 |
[Rudaw] Amnesty International on Tuesday slammed Iraqi authorities for an "alarming lack of transparency" over the execution of 11 prisoners on the same day for "terrorism" charges, condemning the trials for lacking due process and falling short of international standards. AI doesn’t like executions — they’re so judgmental and final, donchaknow, and thus unfair to terrorists and evildoers of all sorts. Iraqi authorities on Monday executed 11 inmates in southern Dhi Qar province’s Nasiriyah central prison on charges of "terrorism", security sources told AFP news agency. It is the latest round of executions after 11 others were executed in the same prison on similar charges last month. "There is an alarming lack of transparency surrounding these executions both in terms of actual numbers of executions taking place as well as the process of guaranteeing the rights of the men being put to death," Razaw Salihy, Iraq Researcher at Amnesty, told Rudaw English. The men in Nasiriya central prison, known as al-Hout, were hanged for their alleged affiliation to with the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS). At least 150 inmates in the facility are facing execution on terrorism-related charges, pending ratification from Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid. "Iraq’s justice system has been plagued by human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... violations. Courts have condemned thousands to death in unfair trials, based on torture tainted evidence and on vaguely worded laws," Salihy said, worrying that the execution rate is set to rise "given the enormous number on death row" if the Iraqi president continues the ratifications. "Amnesty International stresses to the Iraqi authorities that any executions carried out after trials that don't meet international human rights standards may amount to arbitrary deprivation of life," she added. Since the rise of ISIS in 2014, thousands of people have been detained across Iraq for suspected links to terrorist groups, including ISIS, while hundreds have been executed. The United Nations ...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships... has criticized Iraq’s trials of ISIS suspects, saying proceedings have not met fair trial standards and raising concerns about allegations of torture. Amnesty has routinely called on Iraqi authorities to halt all executions and abolish the death penalty ![]() Iraq has often been criticized for poor prison conditions and harsh treatment of detainees and suspects. While access to data on executions in the country is limited, UN experts in January said they were "deeply concerned about the secretive nature of the implementation of the death penalty in Iraq," after 13 men were executed on the same day in late December. More than 8,000 are purportedly on death row in Iraq, and authorities have been repeatedly criticized for carrying out hasty trials. These tremendous injustices are compounded by well-documented flaws in Iraq’s judicial system that deny defendants a fair trial," read HRW’s report. At least 150 inmates in Nasiriyah’s al-Hout prison are facing "imminent execution without warning", pending ratification from Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, according to HRW. 8000 more prisoners, most charged with terror-related charges, are also believed to be on death row. Nasiriyah’s executed prisoners were not allowed to consult their lawyers or have a final meeting with their family members, HRW cited an inmate as saying. Human rights groups have accused Iraq of carrying out hasty trials and denying the defendants their right to a fair trial, with judges reportedly disregarding torture allegations, particularly in cases related to terrorism. HRW said some Iraqi judges have sentenced defendants to death for "mere membership of a terrorist organization." "If the defendant’s fair trial guarantees have been violated, imposition of the death penalty would make the sentence arbitrary," HRW said in the report. Iraq also hands out death sentences for drug-related charges. An Iraqi court, earlier this month, issued the death sentence for three people, one convicted for carrying out a deadly car kaboom in 2007, and two more individuals for drug-related charges. In September, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudan ![]() i called on President Rashid to ratify all the death sentences related to drug trafficking charges. Iraq to take legal measures against Iran following deadly Erbil attack
2024-01-17 | |
[Rudaw] Iraq’s foreign ministry on Tuesday said that Baghdad will pursue legal measures against Tehran, including filing a complaint to the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... ’ Seucrity Council, following a deadly attack with ballistic missiles on Erbil province the night before. In the late hours of Monday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched 10 ballistic missiles towards the Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil, under the pretext of targeting "spy headquarters" of anti-Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneouslytaking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militiasto extend the regime's influence. The word Iranis a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGCis the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA).The term Supreme Guideis a the modern version form of either Duceor Führeror maybe both. They hate groups, killing at least four and wounding 17 others. In a statement on Tuesday morning, the Iraqi foreign ministry said that it strongly condemns and denounces "the Iranian aggression" against Erbil, which resulted in civilian casualties, labeling the attack "a violation" of Iraqi illusory sovereignty. At least five of the missiles targeted the residence of Peshraw Dizayee, a well-known Kurdish businessman. Dizayee and his 11-month-old daughter were killed as a result of the attack. Baghdad "considers this behavior an aggression against the illusory sovereignty of Iraq and the security of the Iraqi people, and an insult to good neighborliness and the security of the region, and confirms that it will take all legal measures against it, including submitting a complaint to the Security Council," read the statement. The ministry added that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudan ![]() i has directed forming a security committee to investigate the incident and "support the [Iraqi] government’s stance internationally." Iraqi state media reported around an hour later that National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji was heading a high-level security delegation to Erbil to assess the aftermath of the Iranian bombardment. Earlier in the day, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned in the strongest terms the "cowardly attack on the people of the Kurdistan Region," urging the Iraqi federal government to "take a principled position against the flagrant violation of Iraq’s and the Kurdistan Region’s illusory sovereignty." Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid on Tuesday morning condemned the Iranian attack as a "violation" of the country’s illusory sovereignty. "Resolving issues is done through constructive dialogue, not through military attacks that threaten the stability of Iraq and the entire region which is witnessing escalations that need to be deescalated," said Rashid in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) condemned the attack, stressing that strikes violating Iraq’s illusory sovereignty "must stop." "Security concerns must be addressed through dialogue, not strikes," said UNAMI. The IRGC grabbed credit for the strike on Monday evening, claiming to have targeted "spy headquarters and gatherings of anti-Iran groups" in Erbil. In a later statement on early Tuesday, the IRGC claimed that "three Mossad bases" were targeted in the Erbil bombardments. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has categorically rejected the presence of Israeli intelligence in the Kurdistan Region. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani last week said that the Region will not become a "source of threat" to Iran, amid threats by the IRGC to launch attacks on Erbil for allegedly housing secret Mossad bases. In late December, KRG spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani reiterated that there are no Israeli bases in the Kurdistan Region, a day after a pro-Iran militia claimed it had struck an Israeli base in Erbil with a drone.
Iran fired missiles late Monday at what it said were Israeli “spy headquarters” in an upscale neighborhood near the sprawling US Consulate compound in Erbil, the seat of Iraq’s northern semi-autonomous Kurdish region, and at targets linked to the extremist Islamic State group in northern Syria. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said in a statement Tuesday that it launched four Kheibar missiles at IS positions in Idlib in Syria and 11 precision ballistic missiles at the Kurdish region in northern Iraq, where it said it hit a center of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency. Iraqi officials denied that the building was related to Mossad, with Iraqi National Security Adviser Qassem al-Araji dismissing the “false” claim. “Concerning the alleged presence of a headquarters of Israel’s Mossad, we visited the house, we inspected every corner of it and everything indicated that it was the family home of an Iraqi businessman,” Araji told Kurdish television station K24 after touring the building that was hit.
