Saudi Arabia Urges Yemenis To Back Hadi
2012-04-10
[Yemen Post] The Saudi Ministerial Council on Monday called on all Yemeni political forces to support the efforts of President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi to continue the implementation of a power transfer deal brokered by the GCC and backed by the US, media outlets reported.

In a statement at the end of its meeting, headed by King of the Arabians, Sheikh of the Burning Sands Abdullah
... Fifth out of 37 sons of King Abdulaziz to ascend to the throne. He is, after his half-brothers Bandar and Musa'id, the third eldest of the living sons of Abdul Aziz ibn Saud. Abdullah's mother is from the Rashid clan, longtime rivals of the Saud. He has 6 sons and 15 daughters and about $20 billion. His youngest son is just seven years old...
, the Council stressed the importance of the power transfer deal to put an end to Yemen's problems, they said. The deal was signed in November after months of turmoil in Yemen.

The statement coincided with a strongly worded warning from the countries backing the deal including the GCC, the US and others to ex-president Saleh and his loyalists that international sanctions will be imposed against them if they hinder the deal and the UN resolution 2014.

Under the deal, Saleh was given full immunity from prosecution and his aides were given immunity but not from terrorist crimes.

The Saudi al-Madina newspaper quoted a diplomat who was not named, as saying the warning came after half-brother of Saleh resisted a decree by Hadi sacking him from his post as the commander of the Air Force, and reappointing him as an advisor to the Defense Minister.

Some senior commanders in the armed and security forces are still relatives of Saleh and those who are very loyal to him including his son, Ahmed, the commander of the elite republican guard.

After he was removed, Saleh's half-brother, Muhammad Saleh, refused to hand over the post to his successor and his supporters surrounded Sanaa International Airport threatening to shoot down any leaving or incoming planes. The airport suspended all flights on Saturday and reopened the next day.

Other commanders were also reported to have resisted Hadi's decrees, which come within reforms in the army.

Since he took office, Hadi has also fired other bigwigs in civil offices, known as very loyal to Saleh.

All decrees have been applauded by the Yemeni people and other countries, especially those sponsoring the power transfer deal.

Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi was elected Yemen's new president with 99.8 per cent of the vote, the head of the Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum, Mohammed Hussein al-Hakimi, said Friday, dpa reported.

Hadi, 67, will replace Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was in power for 33 years.
Wonder if Hadi is already plotting how to spend his next 33 years...
Saleh is expected to attend Hadi's inauguration next week in the Yemeni capital Sana'a.

Al-Hakimi said more than 6.6 million voters cast their ballots on Tuesday, and put the turnout at about 65 per cent. Hadi was the sole candidate in the early election, which was the result of a deal for the peaceful transfer of power signed in November by Saleh, 69, and the opposition.

Vice President Warns 'Yemen on Verge of Civil War'
2011-10-01
[Yemen Post] Yemen's Vice President, Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, warned that if the situation explodes in the country the GCC-brokered power transition deal and all peaceful solutions to the political crisis will end, Saba reported on Wednesday.

The current situation represents a direct threat to the general situation in Yemen and with it the country enters a dangerous stage of civil war, he said.

Despite meetings with the opposition that started last Sunday, the opposition continued to escalate and inflame the situation through occupying and stationing on streets and deploying vehicles and troops, a move with which the crisis worsened, he was quoted as saying during his meeting with ambassadors of permanent members of the Security Council, and EU and GCC blocs.

The security-military committee on supervising a ceasefire after heavy festivities between pro and anti-regime forces in Sana'a last week attended the meeting.

Hadi addressed the meeting saying, "I preferred to meet you today to launch together a process that will lead to agreeing on a mechanism for signing and implementing the GCC plan and ensuring the commitment of all parties to the plan's terms".

Hadi considered the meeting as a kick-start to practical implementation of the GCC deal after he had been authorized by President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
to hold a dialogue with the opposition over necessary steps to make the deal a success.

Yemen Ruling Party to Discuss Saleh Mandate over GCC Plan
2011-09-07
[Yemen Post] The General People's Congress, Yemen's ruling party, meets on Tuesday to discuss how to start dialogue with the opposition, the GCC and the U.S. and EU ambassadors after an order from President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
to find a suitable mechanism to sign and start implementing a GCC-brokered power transition deal in the country without delay.

Al-Mithaq newspaper, the mouthpiece of the party, said on Monday the GPC General Committee will hold a meeting chaired by Vice President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, the first deputy of the GPC chief, to discuss the mandate and find suitable ways to start talks with the JMP, the GCC Foreign Ministers and the U.S. and EU envoys to Sana'a.

The meeting will discuss a number of political, economic and organizational reports within the general policy of the GPC for the coming period, the paper said.

In his speech on the eve of Eid Al-Fitr, President Saleh said he had assigned the GPC General Committee to talk to the opposition and foreigners involved in the efforts to tackle the Yemeni crisis to sign the GCC plan without postponement.

Under the GCC plan, Saleh will hand power to his deputy in a month and will call for new presidential elections in ninety days; the opposition will be responsible for forming a national unity government; and a military committee will be responsible for the army restructuring.

Saleh, convalescing in Soddy Arabia after a June liquidation attempt, had backed out of signing the plan three times at the last minute; the latest in May after the ruling and opposition parties already inked it in Sana'a with the GCC Secretary General in attendance.

Yemen has been gripped by seven-month protests calling for the ouster of the regime, and in recent months, the country has started experiencing severe crises topped by fuel crisis and associated price hikes as well as battles with Al-Qaeda in the south and insecurity in other parts.

The problems along with most recent signs of a possible civil war have triggered fears about the country's future at a time when the international community is exerting major efforts to solve the political crisis to maintain Yemen's stability and unity.

[Yemen Post] The UK will not recognize any transitional council to manage Yemen's affairs, said Jonathan Wiliks, the UK ambassdor to Sana'a on Monday, two days after the youth-led revolution council formed a transitional council including opposition figures abroad.

The announced council is still controversial inside change and freedom squares in Yemeni cities and as some of its members said they had no idea about their nominations.

He argued that no country will support such council and that it is very necessary to focus on the suffering of the Yemeni people right now.

He also said that he had advised the youth-led protesters inside squares of change and freedom telling them that they can't form a competent transitional council because of their divisions.

Wiliks warned of negative consequences if power is not transferred to Vice President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, who is managing the country while President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
is being treated in Soddy Arabia.

The refusal of President Saleh and his family to discussing an immediate power transfer will negaitively affect political, economic, security, social landscaptes in the country, the ambassador was qouted as saying by newsyemen.net.

"Yemen is in need for a political change right now under its constitution which enshrined that the president should transfer power to his deputy in case the president is incompetent," he said, stressing the importance of involving all political forces in tackling the current situation to achieve a positive political change.
