Nigerian Military Jet Mistakenly Strikes, Kills 20 Vigilantes In Zamfara State

[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
A Nigerian military fighter jet has mistakenly struck and killed about 20 men of a vigilante group during an operation targeting bandidos in Garin Mani, a village in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the area on cycle of violences around noon, shooting indiscriminately and causing widespread panic. In response, local vigilante groups mobilised and began chasing the fleeing assailants. However, if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning... a military aircraft deployed to the scene allegedly misidentified the vigilantes as bandidos and launched ![]() KABOOM!... s on them. "We were pursuing the bandidos when we saw the fighter jet approaching," one of the vigilantes told BBC Hausa. "It flew very low and started bombing us. Some of us survived by pretending we had been hit. When the jet left, we got up and fled to safety." Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident and expressed disappointment over the lack of communication from the military. "We understand it was an unfortunate mistake, but the military should acknowledge what happened and reach out to the victims’ families," he said. He also appealed to the government to deploy additional troops to the area, as the bandidos had threatened to return. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In January, an airstrike mistakenly killed 16 people, including vigilantes, in Tungar Kara, also in Zamfara. Similarly, in December last year, 10 residents of Gidan Bisa in Sokoto State were killed in a misdirected airstrike. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military has yet to issue an official statement on the latest incident. Over 30 Soldiers Killed As al-Qaeda-Linked Group Invades Army Base In Mali |
2025-06-03 |

An al-Qaeda linked group has grabbed credit for an attack in the Malian town of Boulikessi that killed over 30 soldiers on Sunday and led to the seizure of an army base. Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Moslemin (JNIM) said its fighters overran the military camp in a coordinated assault. Sources quoted by Rooters reported that more than 30 soldiers were killed, though the Malian authorities have not yet confirmed the casualty figure. In a statement reacting to the attack, the Malian army said it "reacted vigorously" before it "withdrew", suggesting a tactical retreat. "Many men fought, some until their last breath, to defend the Malian nation," the army added. A local source told Rooters that JNIM "cleared the camp" and left many casualties. Unverified videos seen by the agency showed dozens of bully boyz invading the base, with one clip reportedly showing fighters stepping on corpses. On Monday, JNIM said it launched another offensive in the historic city of Timbuktu, targeting a military airport and Russian mercenaries. Residents reported hearing gunfire and explosions as the assault unfolded. Military and security sources told AFP that they were "fighting back" but admitted the bully boyz were "everywhere in the city". A local official said the attackers arrived "with a vehicle packed with explosives" that detonated near the army camp. Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was captured by Islamist bully boyz in 2012 but was later recaptured. However, a clean conscience makes a soft pillow... the city has remained under threat in recent years. The back-to-back attacks have highlighted the worsening security situation in Mali and across the wider Sahel region ... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas... They came shortly after the United States Africa Command warned of increased jihadist activity aimed at gaining access to West Africa’s coastline. Speaking at a presser on Friday, US Africom commander Gen Michael Langley said, "These groups gaining access to the coast will significantly boost their capacity for smuggling and arms trafficking." Rooters reports that more than 400 soldiers have been killed by bully boyz since the start of last month in Mali, Burkina Faso ![]() , and Niger. Islamic Cleric Al-Qasim Calls For Resistance Against Amnesty International Amid Plot To Silence Human Rights Body |
2025-06-03 |
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
A northern Islamic cleric, Sheik Bin Al-Qasim Asaduls, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to rise against what he described as the alleged "selective and biased" reporting of Amnesty International. True, but not the way the honoured sheik meant. In a video posted on his official Facebook page, the cleric accused the international human rights organisation of deliberately ignoring the killings of Muslims while amplifying incidents involving Christians.Sheikh Al-Qasim alleged that Amnesty International has never shown genuine concern for the plight of Muslims in regions such as Maiduguri, Sokoto, or Zamfara, despite persistent insecurity and violence affecting those areas. "Amnesty claims to defend human rights, but many of us believe it is driven by a Western agenda. They remain silent when Muslims are killed but rush to release statements whenever Muslims react to provocation or defend their Prophet," Al-Qasim said in the video. The cleric’s remarks come in the wake of a recent Amnesty International report that highlighted human rights abuses under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Al-Qasim, however, suggested that the organisation is not interested in true justice but rather in stirring religious and political instability in Muslim communities. “Amnesty International, under the guise of justice, is inciting conflict and trying to destabilise the North,” he said. The North needs absolutely no help in that regard. He further urged Nigerian Muslims to remain vigilant and resist what he termed foreign attempts to undermine their religion and their region. However, Amnesty International’s report stated that within two years, 10,000 people had been killed due to terrorism. According to their figures, 7000 of the victims were from Benue State, 2,600 from Plateau State, and 691 from Sokoto, Zamfara, and other Northern regions. Al-Qasim said, "What does this imply? It appears they want to create a false narrative that only Christians are being killed, since Benue and Plateau are predominantly Christian states. They released this report to push their agenda. He said, "Take for example a recent attack in a Christian community in Plateau State where over 100 people were gruesomely murdered. Amnesty International publicised it widely. What are they trying to achieve? They want people to react emotionally and turn the issue into a religious crisis. "We know that religious conflict is one of the fastest ways to destroy a nation’s stability and economy. So, think carefully: does this report by Amnesty International truly reflect the whole picture? Not even close — it’s actually much worse than Amnesty International reports. "I swear by God, out of the 10,000 people they claim were killed, I can tell you that 9,000 of them were Muslims. Every day, people are dying in Northern Nigeria—mostly Muslims. In Borno State alone, many of the victims are Muslims," Al-Qasim said.According to him, "Amnesty International claims 7,000 were killed in Benue. But if I ask you which states in Nigeria are facing the worst insecurity, you will mention Zamfara, then Maiduguri, followed by Katsina and Sokoto. These are the states where people are being killed the most. Moslems killed by Moslems, Christians killed by Moslems, both are true. Boko Haram ISWAP, Fulani herders, Moslem village lad on a tear, greedy neoghbours… so many different reasons for NigerianMoslems to pick up weapons to create corpses. Previously, SaharaReporters reported that a coordinated propaganda campaign had been launched against Amnesty International (AI) following the release of its recent report detailing the killings in Nigeria’s Plateau and Benue states, SaharaReporters has learnt. Sources had told SaharaReporters that this is part of a broader propaganda campaign targeting the international human rights organisation.Since the release of its report last week detailing unchecked killings in Plateau and Benue states, there has been a coordinated effort, said to be led by government officials, featuring influencers like Dan Bello, Arewa Mufarka, Sharfaddeen Bature and others who have launched an aggressive propaganda offensive against Amnesty International. Nastura Ashir Sharif, a northern Nigerian man who once benefitted from Amnesty International’s support after his arrest and detention for speaking out, is now involved in a campaign against the organisation. Sharif had been detained for several days following a peaceful protest in Katsina State, where he voiced concerns about critical issues affecting citizens, including the wave of student kidnappings in the north-western states. After his arrest, he was transferred to Abuja and held in detention. Once a beneficiary of Amnesty’s advocacy, Sharif has since become a vocal critic, leading what appears to be a wider effort to discredit the international human rights group. Amnesty International’s recent report detailing rising violence and mass killings in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region has sparked backlash from various political and community leaders, especially in northern Nigeria.Nigerian cultural tours Back in 2020, Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Sharif, who had been detained for defending the right to life and demanding an end to worsening insecurity in northern Nigeria. At the time, Amnesty International stated that Sharif was simply urging the authorities to fulfill their responsibilities, and his arrest was viewed as an attempt to intimidate and silence peaceful advocates for freedom of assembly and expression. Nine Feared Dead, Several Injured As Bomb Explodes At Borno Bus Stop |
2025-06-02 |
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
Nine people have been feared dead following a bomb explosion at a local bus stop in Mairari village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State. It was gathered that the deadly blast was caused by an improvised bomb (IED) planted at a bus stop. The explosion occurred around 11 a.m. on Saturday, and many people were reportedly injured. The PUNCH reports that the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, has confirmed that nine people were killed By IEDs planted by Lions of Islam at a local bus stop in Mairari village, Guzamala Local Government Area. "It is unfortunate that nine of my resilient constituents were killed by planted IEDs while waiting to board vehicles at a local bus stop in Mairari village," Lawan said. "May Allah grant their souls Aljanatul Firdaus. I also pray for the swift recovery of those currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Monguno and Maiduguri." The Speaker lamented the continued attacks on the region, noting that Mairari village had previously been resettled twice with full civil authority, making it unique in Guzamala Local Government Area, but had again been deserted due to renewed Boko Haram ![]() and ISWAP activities. He explained that many displaced residents currently taking refuge in Monguno, Guzamala, and Maiduguri frequently return to Mairari to farm. "Unfortunately, Lions of Islam monitoring their movements planted IEDs at the local bus stop, which went kaboom!while they were waiting to board commercial vehicles back to their destinations," he narrated. Lawan extended his condolences to the families of the dear departed and those injured in the blast. He also appealed to the military and other security agencies to intensify efforts to restore security in Guzamala—particularly in Gudumbali, the council headquarters, and Mairari village—areas which have long remained under the control of Boko Haram without any civil authority. US Africa commander highlights terror growth in Sahel and competition with China for influence
2025-05-30 | |
[FOX] A top United States military general warned Thursday that terror groups in Africa are ramping up their ability to conduct attacks in the U.S. Gen. Michael Langley, the four-star Marine General who leads U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), said the Sahel region of the continent is now the "flashpoint of prolonged conflict and growing instability. It is the epicenter of terrorism on the globe." Several terror groups have expanded drastically in the last three years. Al-Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, is three times the size it was in 2022, he said, and has spread across Mali, Burkina Faso, and parts of Niger, which the U.S. military pulled out of last year. Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin,
"We're keeping a good eye on this because they could have the capacity to attack the homeland," Langley said in a call with reporters. "Throughout my travels across West Africa and through dialog here at the conference, the concerns shared by my peers match my own," he added. "One of the terrorist's key goals now is access to the west coast of Africa. If they gain access to the vast coastline, they can diversify their revenue streams and evolve their tactics, more easily exporting terrorism to American shores." He noted that the terror groups engage in illicit activity like smuggling, human trafficking and arms trading, which fund their nefarious actions and destabilize the region. U.S. forces over the weekend conducted an airstrike against the al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab in Somalia. The East African country has been wracked for decades by attacks and insurgency from Islamist terrorists, both from ISIS and al-Shabab. The U.S. is in a race with China and Russia to gain influence and trust with the local governments of several African nations to help protect citizens from terror groups. Langley said there is an increasing concern about the number of African soldiers going to Beijing for military training and replicating a U.S. International Military Education and Training (IMET) program. Nigerian government losing ground to a resurgent Boko Haram and its IS-affiliated splinter : Peoples Dispatch |
2025-05-28 |
[PEOPLESDISPATCH.ORG] Amid a series of attacks in Nigeria's northeastern border state of Borno, its governor, Babagana Zulum, sounded an alarm that only one of the over 300 towns and villages in its Marte Local Government Area (LGA) remains under government control. Several other of the 27 LGAs of the state have also been attacked this year, especially since March. The attackers? A resurgent Boko Haram and its splinter, the Islamic State ![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... of West Africa Province (ISWAP). Past midnight on May 23, Boko Haram button men were intercepted by the army while trying to infiltrate a brigade's headquarters in the Damboa LGA. In the two-hour-long battle that ensued, two soldiers and 16 forces of Evil were reportedly killed before the latter retreated. The night before, around 10:30 pm on May 22, the army killed five more murderous Moslems while repelling an attack on a military base in Gajibo village of the Dikwa LGA. The button men also opened fire on civilians in the village, killing at least nine and injuring many more. Dozens more civilians were executed last week in the Kukawa LGA, where a Boko Haram faction's button men reportedly rounded up over a hundred residents, mostly bean farmers and fishermen, in the village of Malam Karanti and its neighboring Kwatandashi on May 15. They were marched into a bush where 57 bodies, most of them with slit throats, were recovered two days later. RIVALRY AND COOPERATION BETWEEN BOKO HARAM AND ISWAP Local media reports and eyewitness accounts that Boko Haram attacked these villagers for paying protection money to its rival ISWAP highlight that civilians remain the victims even when the conflict is within the Jihadist movement. ISWAP was formed in 2016 and affiliated itself with the Islamic State after it broke away from Boko Haram which formed in 2002. In 2009, Boko Haram unleashed a terror campaign, which continues till today, killing 36,000 people and displacing another 2.2 million. Clashes between these two rivals have also been reported. Nevertheless, the Nigerian government is losing ground again to the Jihadists, even as they fight each other. Their rivalry and collaboration appear to be separated by a thin and often blurred line. Nigerian media attributes several attacks to ''Boko Haram/ISWAP'', including the attack on Gajibo on May 22 and the earlier coordinated raids between May 12 and 13 on the two military bases — one in Rann in Kala Balge LGA, and another in Gajiram in the Nganzai LGA. Vanguard reported that five soldiers were killed and six others were maimed in Rann, while the army was able to repel the attack in Gajiram — both of which have come under repeated attacks this year. Earlier on May 12, button men had also struck another military base in Marte town in Marte LGA on the border with Cameroon ...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there... , killing seven soldiers and dislodging others before stealing weapons. After the base was briefly overrun, 20,000 people fled the town to take refuge in an Internally Displaced People (IDP) camp in Dikwa LGA's town. ''This huge number is a threat as allowing them to stay in the camp may'' leave ''the younger ones— vulnerable to recruitment by the murderous Moslems,'' Governor Zulum warned. Reassured by his visit to the town with security forces in the aftermath of this attack, many of the residents have returned, and are now ''resettled for the second time,'' he said in a presser on May 18. They were first resettled here about four years ago when the army retook control over this area from the forces of Evil under the previous administration. However, Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried... with Nigeria's economy shrinking under the deepening neoliberal austerity measures by the current administration, the security forces are increasingly ill-equipped and underfunded. They have been ceding ground once again to a resurgent Boko Haram, which is reportedly deploying drones of the sort used by Israel and Ukraine. Nigerian Military Rescues 275 Hostages, Clears More Boko Haram Enclaves — THISDAYLIVE |
2025-05-26 |
[THISDAYLIVE] Following its ongoing operations against Boko Haram![]() in the North-east, the Nigerian military has again rescued about 275 hostages and dislodged Death Eaters remnants from their enclaves in some parts of Borno State. In the latest offensive, the troops also killed 15 terrorists, arrested six others and recovered several items and weapon making materials. This was disclosed in a statement signed monday by the Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, saying the military recorded many successes at different operational areas in Borno State. Usman said troops from the 152 Task Force Battalion in conjunction with those from Sector 1 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) last Sunday carried out clearance operations in suspected terrorist hideouts around Madawaya general area, cleared an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) making factory, killed 15 Death Eaters and recovered some weapons. The troops, he noted, cleared Death Eaters in Madawaya, Jere, Kardile, Koujili, Ngenere and Maksamari as well as Douse, Bembem, Zombulum and Taraji villages. In addition, he said, they recovered several vehicles and cycle of violences. ''They also discovered and destroyed the Boko Haram terrorists' IED making factory at Bula Umara and killed 15 Death Eaters in the same area. In addition, the troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, four fully loaded magazines with 7.62mm ammunitions two power generating sets, welding machines, assorted batteries and solar panels,'' he stated. Usman listed other items recovered by the troops to include drums of beans and other grains as well as bandolier. ''The gallant soldiers also rescued 275 persons held hostage by the Boko Haram terrorists. One interesting thing is that, one of the rescued persons gave birth to baby boy shortly after their liberation. Both mother and the child are doing fine. |

Boko Haram informants among politicians, soldiers |
2025-05-23 |
[VANGUARDNGR] Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, alleged yesterday that some politicians and members of the armed forces act as informants and collaborators for Boko Haram![]() holy warriors. The governor, who made the allegation in an interview on News Central's Breakfast programme, also said the Nigerian Army lacks requisite equipment to fight terrorists, noting that devoid of politics, Boko Haram can be wiped out in six months. Zulum spoke on a day Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said some of the holy warriors and bandidos terrorising the country are not Nigerians, even as the Senate warned that insurgency could spread to other parts of the North, if it was not checked now. However, the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits... efforts by Vanguard to get the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, to respond to the allegations proved abortive as his phone line repeatedly said the owner was unavailable. Messages sent to him on his Whatsapp line were also not responded to. But speaking during the interview, the Borno governor vowed that the state will strengthen its intelligence network and deal with saboteurs ''ruthlessly.'' He said: ''We have informants and collaborators within the Nigerian armed forces, among politicians, and within the communities. What we shall do is strengthen our intelligence and deal with them ruthlessly. ''Let's remove contractocracy. In six months, we can put an end to this madness; we need not politicise insecurity.'' |
