Lebanon to extradite son of late Muslim cleric al-Qaradawi to UAE over alleged inflammatory comments

… (1926-2022). Peripatetic academic, scholar, and charismatic public intellectual, the chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars was known as The Voice of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood because of his popular Al Jazeera television show that claimed a worldwide audience of 40-60 million, the IslamOnline website he started in 1997 as dawa, or Muslim outreach, and the more than 120 books he wrote on various Muslim subjects. The Muslim Brotherhood claimed him as as one of their chief theologians, though he denied it, and a sharia-compliant bank of which he was the principal shareholder was listed at the UN as associated with Al Qaeda until 2010, so possibly he wasn’t the moderate Muslim some claimed, though he was definitely in the Muslim mainstream…

The UAE and Egypt have both filed requests for his extradition.

The requests "are believed to be based on the legitimate exercise of his right to freedom of expression," Amnesty International’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, Sara Hashash says in a statement, urging Lebanese authorities to reject the extradition requests.

The Egyptian and Emirati foreign ministries do not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Qaradawi’s lawyer says he will file an urgent appeal to block his client’s extradition but fears the poet might be flown out of the country before then.

Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi, who died in 2022, was a spiritual guide to the Moslem Brüderbund who championed the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings and unsettled rulers in Egypt and the Gulf with his Islamist preaching. He spoke in favor of suicide kabooms against Israelis and denied Israel’s right to exist.

Born in Egypt, Qaradawi spent much of his life in Qatar

, where he became one of the Arab world’s most influential Sunni Moslem holy mans thanks to regular appearances on Qatar’s Al Jazeera television network.

Broadcast into millions of homes, his sermons fueled tensions that led Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies to impose a blockade on Qatar in 2017 and declare Qaradawi a terrorist.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief January 7, 2023
2023-01-07
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • PRINCE HARRY PISSES OFF THE ENTIRE WORLD – The Royal ignited a firestorm after quotes from his recently released memoir, “Spare,” was criticized by the Taliban and by many of his former comrades in arms. In what appears to be an honest accounting of his combat tour in Afghanistan, he writes about ‘eliminating Baddies’ with a lack of remorse that appears to have infuriated a number of his acquaintances while simultaneously extending an invitation to the Taliban leadership to call for a war crimes investigation. Some comrades who served with the Prince have also criticized the recounting and say it puts him, his family, and those he fought alongside at risk of retaliation.

  • SUPREME LEADER SNUBS INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM SCHOLAR GROUP – In another sign that all is not well between Kandahar and Kabul, a delegation of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) was snubbed by the Supreme Leader, and their request for an audience was denied. The delegation had arrived in Afghanistan on a fact-finding trip to ascertain whether their organization could help the fledgling government by funding several priority areas of need. The delegation was received by the Minister of the Interior, Sirajuddin Haqqani, who is rapidly assuming the mantle of a ‘moderate’ in the Taliban. A source within the Ministry of the Interior says there is already a palpable sense of division between the old-guard Taliban and the younger generation embodied by both the Minister of Defense and the Interior.

  • LANDSLIDE IN BADAKHSHAN TRAPS SEVERAL MINERS – A landslide occurred at a gold mine in the Yawan District on Thursday night and at least 10 miners were reportedly trapped. It is believed the slide occurred after a moderately powerful earthquake struck the region. Rescue teams have been sent to the site and are working to free the trapped miners. The region suffers many of these catastrophes each year as artisanal mining is one of the few economic opportunities available to residents of the Province.

  • UPTICK IN ANTI-CHINA SENTIMENT ON JIHADIST SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS – After the December 12th attack on a hotel used primarily by Chinese nationals in Kabul. ISIS-K published a detailed editorial about the attack in its official al-Naba newsletter (15 December). The al-Naba article has since been translated into multiple languages and shared extensively among affiliate groups. Pakistan recently had to intervene and disperse an anti-China protest at the Gwadar Port. With the announcement of the recent long-term oil deal between the Taliban and China, ISIS-K will likely target more Chinese activities in Afghanistan.

Top Muslim scholar rejects 'coup' in Tunisia
2021-07-27
[NATION.PK] The International Union for Moslem Scholars (IUMS) rejected any "coup" in Tunisia, as the country’s president sacked the country’s prime minister and suspended parliament.
IUMS is headquartered in Doha and affiliated with the Moslem Brotherhood.
"We are against any coup even if it is carried out by an Islamic group. Our legitimate position is clear," IUMS Secretary-General Ali al-Qaradaghi said in a Twitter post following the announcement by Tunisian President Kais Saied late Sunday that he has fully assumed executive authority.

Saied dismissed the government of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, froze parliament and assumed the executive authority with the assistance of a new prime minister.

Qaradaghi warned the Tunisian people to be wary of putschists' traps.

"Tunisia and its great people are too big and conscious to be swallowed up by the putschists and their supporters," he said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the secret hideout, Scarface Al sneeringly put his proposition to little Nell...
soldiers deployed at parliament prevented Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi and accompanying politicians from entering the building.

Ghannouchi, for his part, denounced Saied's move as a "full-fledged coup" against the Tunisian constitution, revolution, and freedoms in the country.

Tunisia has been gripped by a deep crisis since Jan. 16, when Mechichi announced a cabinet reshuffle but Saied refused to hold a ceremony to swear in the new ministers. Tunisia also faces an unprecedented spread of the COVID-19 strains in most states, causing a rapid spread of the virus.

Tunisia is seen as the only Arab country that succeeded in carrying out a democratic transition among other Arab countries that also witnessed popular revolutions that toppled the ruling regimes, including Egypt, Libya, and Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...

Iraqi Sunni politicians reject visit by Iran's Soleimani to Falluja
2016-05-29
[Al Ahram] Sunni politicians in Iraq condemned on Saturday a visit by Iranian General Qassem Soleimani to Shia paramilitary forces fighting alongside the Iraqi army to drive Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bandidos Lions of Islam out of the Sunni city of Falluja.

Three politicians from the province of Anbar told Rooters the visit by Iran's al-Quds brigade commander could fuel sectarian tension and cast doubt on Baghdad's assertions that the offensive is an Iraqi-led effort to defeat Islamic State, and not to settle scores with the Sunnis.

Falluja, which lies about 50 kilometers (32 miles) west of Baghdad, is a bastion of the insurgency that fought the US occupation of Iraq and the Shi'ite-led authorities that replaced former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein, a Sunni.

In recent days, Iranian media published pictures of what they said was a visit by Soleimani to Falluja and a meeting he held with the leaders of the Iraqi coalition of Shi'ite militias known as Popular Mobilization, or Hashid Shaabi.

It is the second time Soleimani has appeared in Iraqi conflict zones. About a year ago, witnesses said he was present when Popular Mobilization fighters ousted Islamic State bandidos Lions of Islam from cities north of the capital.

An Iraqi government front man did not confirm Soleimani's visit and stressed that Iranian advisors are present in Iraq in order to assist in the war on Islamic State (IS group) in the same capacity as those of the US-led anti-IS group coalition.

Member of parliament (MP) Hamid al-Mutlaq rejected that, however.

"We are Iraqis and not Iranians," he said. "Would Turkish or Saudi advisers be welcomed to assist in the battle?" he added, drawing a parallel between the three regional powers bordering Iraq -- mainly-Sunni The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, and Shia Iran.

"Soleimani's presence is suspicious and a cause for concern; he is absolutely not welcome in the area," said Falluja parliamentarian Salim Muttar al-Issawi.

"I believe that the presence of such an official from the (Iranian) Revolutionary Guard could have sectarian implications," said another MP from the city, Liqaa Wardi.

Falluja was the first city captured by Islamic State in Iraq in January 2014, and is the second-largest still held by the bandidos Lions of Islam after djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, their de-facto capital.

The Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq, a hardline political organization formed after Saddam's ouster to represent Sunnis, rejected the participation of the Shi'ite militias in the fighting in Falluja.

"The militias ... didn't come to liberate areas, as they claim, but to carry out their sectarian goals with direct guidance from Iran," it said in a statement on Friday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had been cornered by the banditti...
rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia traded accusations over Soleimani's role in Iraq.

"The presence of Iran's military advisers in Iraq under the command of General Qassem Soleimani is at the request of the country's legitimate government in order to fight terrorists," an Iranian foreign ministry front man said, according to the Fars news agency.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir was quoted as telling Russia's RT channel Soleimani's presence in Iraq was "very negative."

Hezbollah’s Iraq branch fighting Fallujah battle
2016-05-26
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Iraqi military front man said troops were trying to tighten the encirclement of Falluja by advancing on the western front, near the village of Khalidiya.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shouting match, the spittle had reached unprecedented levels...
Iraqi Defense Ministry published an official report which includes statements confirming that the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades are involved in the battle of Fallujah.

Days ago, a YouTube account linked to Kata’ib Hezbollah, a US-designated terrorist organization and Iranian proxy, has uploaded a video showing a large convoy of its rocket launcher systems being sent to the front lines near Iraqi city of Fallujah.

From its part, days ago, Harakat al Nujaba, or Movement of the Noble, an Iranian-supported Shiite militia which operates in both Iraq and Syria, has said it is clearing a road in eastern Anbar province in preparation for an upcoming offensive to retake Fallujah from the ISIS.

Also, Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps-Qods Force ‐ the external operations wing of the Revolutionary Guards ‐ was spotted in a picture said to be taken near Fallujah. A picture of Soleimani in the "Fallujah operations room" was posted to the Facebook account of Harakat al Nujaba.

Fear civilian casualties will worsen sectarian strife

On Wednesday morning Iraqi troops concentrated artillery fire on Falluja's northern and northeastern neighborhoods, according to a resident contacted via the Internet.

A Falluja hospital source said that six non-combatants were killed and 11 maimed on Wednesday morning, raising the overall corpse count since Monday's launch of the government offensive to 35 - 21 civilians and 14 holy warriors.

"Fierce fighting is now raging around the city," Save the Children said in a statement on Wednesday, calling for safe civilian exit routes to be established as quickly as possible.

Falluja's population is around 100,000, according to U.S. and Iraqi government estimates.

The offensive is part of a government campaign to roll back ISIS' seizure of wide tracts of northern and western Iraq. Baghdad's forces retook Ramadi, the Anbar picturesque provincial capital near Falluja, in December but have not yet tackled a bigger challenge - IS-held djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Iraq's largest northern city.

The Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq, a hardline political organization formed after Saddam's ouster to represent Sunnis, has condemned the assault on Falluja as "an unjust aggression, a reflection of the vengeful spirit that the forces of evil harbor against this city".

Meanwhile,
...back at the shouting match, the spittle had reached unprecedented levels...
Iraq's top Shi'ite Muslim holy man urged government forces battling to retake Falluja.

Sistani wields enormous influence over Iraq's Shi'ites. It was at his call that Shi'ite militias regrouped in 2014 in a coalition known as Hashid Shaabi (Popular Mobilization), to stem Islamic State

's stunning advance through the north and west.

Hashid Shaabi will take part in encircling Falluja but will not enter the city unless the Iraqi army fails in doing so, said Hadi al-Amiri, the leader of the Badr Organisation, the largest component of the Shi'ite coalition.

"Our decision is to encircle the city from the outside and let the security forces operate; if the security forces are unable to cleanse the city, we will then go in,'' he said, according to video recording on the state-run TV channel.

Muslim world questions logic behind Charlie antics
2015-01-15
[ARABNEWS] Iyad Madani, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, has denounced the publication of sacrilegious cartoons by French magazine Charlie Hebdo Wednesday, calling the move insolence, ignorance and foolishness.

He said: Freedom of speech must not become a hate-speech and it must not offend others. No sane person, regardless of doctrine, religion or faith, accepts his beliefs being ridiculed.

Prominent Saudi scholar Sheikh Ahmed Al-Ghamdi said that publication of the latest image was a mistake. Its not a good way to make the people understand us. Jesus or Moses, all messengers (of God) we should respect, and should not be made fun of in pictures or words, Ghamdi said. I believe it will make more problems.

The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestinian lands, Mohammed Hussein, said such cartoons fuel feelings of hatred and resentment among people and publishing them shows contempt for Muslim feelings.

Leading Islamic authority Al-Azhar denounced the new edition and said: The stature of the Prophet of Mercy is greater and more lofty than to be harmed by cartoons that are unrestrained by decency and civilized standards. It said: Al-Azhar calls on all Muslims to ignore this hateful frivolity.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars also criticized the antics of Charlie Hebdo, claiming they would further stir up hatred, extremism and tension. It is neither reasonable, nor logical, nor wise to publish drawings and films offensive or attacking the Prophet of Islam, said the Qatar-based union, headed by Yusuf Al-Qardawi.

According to the union, publication of the drawing would give further credibility to the idea that the West is against Islam. It said: If we agree that (those who committed the attacks) are a minority that do not represent Islam or Muslims, then how can we respond with actions that are not directed against them, but against the Prophet revered by a billion-and-a-half Muslims?

Meanwhile, Yemens Al-Qaeda branch on Wednesday confirmed it carried out last weeks deadly assault in Paris and vowed more attacks on the West.

In a video posted on Twitter, a commander said: You will look for peace and stability but you will not find it because of the deeds of those carrying out martyrdom operations and heroes of lone jihad.

He said the Yemeni-American cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki, who was killed in a US drone strike in Yemen in September 2011, had arranged the attack.

Arabia
UAE blacklists 82 groups as 'terrorist'
2014-11-16
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The government of the United Arab Emirates formally endorsed on Saturday the designation of 82 organizations, including Egyptâs Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), as terror groups, in line with a federal law on combating terrorism.

The list, published by the countryâs state-run WAM news agency, includes the Muslim Brotherhood, the groupâs local and regional affiliates, as well as Al-Qaeda-linked groups operating in different parts of the region.

Several brigades fighting on both sides in the Syrian conflict along with Islamist groups in Libya, Tunisia, Mali, Pakistan, Nigeriaâs Boko Haram as well as Afghanistan's Taliban account for the bulk of the list.

Shiite militants groups also figure in the list, including Shiite Hezbollah in the Gulf states and brigades with the same name in Iraq. Lebanonâs Iranian backed Hezbollah was not blacklisted.

In late August, UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahayan enacted federal law number 7, which mandated the list to be published and circulated by the media to further âtransparencyâ and âincrease awarenessâ of terrorist threats.

The move follows a similar step taken by Saudi Arabia in March.

The groups blacklisted by the UAE were as follows:

1- UAEâs Muslim Brotherhood called Al-Islah
2- UAE terrorist cells
3- Karama organization
4- Uma Parties in the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula
5- Al-Qaeda
Finally got around to it...
6- Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)
They prefer to be known as The Islamic State or as The Caliphate...
7- Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)
Formerly the aden-Abyan Islamic Army plus the Lions of the Arabian Peninsula
8- Yemenâs Ansar al-Sharia
... which sez they're not an al-Qaeda affiliate, otherwise they're indistinguishable from al-Qaeda.
9- Muslim Brotherhood, both the organization and movement
I don't think the Moslem Brü can properly be called a terrorist organization; it's more a subversive organization. We saw what happened when they achieved power in Egypt: one man, one vote, one time. Their belief that Islam is the Answer, regardless of the question makes them look foolish, but they are Moslems and they behave like Moslems do when they can't get their way.
10- Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiyya in Egypt
Zawahiri used to be the head of Gamaa al-Islamiya. I think they swore to non-violence to get their members out of jail.
11- Bait al-Maqdis group in Egypt
Formerly just al-Qaeda in the Sinai Peninsula, now sworn to the Islamic State
12- Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt group)
I think we've seen these guys once or maybe twice.
13- Majlis Shura Al-Mujahedin Fi Aknaf Bayt Al-Maqdis (Mujahidin Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem, or MSC)
14- Yemenâs Houthi movement
Aligned with Iran and with former President-for-Life Saleh.
15- Hezbollah party in Saudi Arabiaâs Hijaz
16- Hezbollah in the Gulf region
17- Al-Qaeda in Iran
I believe this is the "protected" al-Qaeda that the Medes and the Persians keep on a tight leash. If I had a bunch of money I'd do some intensive investigation on this group.
18- Badr organization in Iraq
19- Asaâib Ahl al-Haq, also known as the Khazali Network in Iraq
20- Fath al-Islam in Lebanon
This is our old friend, Fateh al-Islam. Probably they've been folded into al-Nusra or the Caliphate by now.
21- Osbat Al-Ansar or Asbat an-Ansar (League of the Partisans) in Lebanon
I believe Usbat al-Ansar lives in Ein al-Hellhole. They're the place to go when you're on the run. Every once in awhile they shoot one of the local Fatah muckety-mucks.
22- Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)
I think AQIM has lost a lot: their debacle in Mali, the ego versus ego contest between Mokhtar versus Droukdel, and the fact that half of them have pledged to the Islamic State.
23- Ansar Al-Sharia in Libya
24- Ansar Al-Sharia in Tunisia
25- Al-Shabab in Somalia
26- Boko Haram in Nigeria
27- Al-Murabitoon brigade in Mali
That's Mokhtar Belmokhtar's mob...
28- Ansar Al-Din movement in Mali
29- Haqani network in Pakistan
30- Lashkar Taiba in Pakistan
31- Eastern Turkestan Islamic Movement headquartered in Pakistan
32- Mohammed Army in Pakistan
Jaish e-Muhammad...
33- Mohammed Army in India
34- Indian mujahideen in India/Kashmir
35- The Caucasus Emirate by Chechen militants
36- Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU)
37- Abu Sayyaf Islamist group in the Philippines
38- Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)
Nailed that one. Not a terrorist organization, but fellow travelers.
39- Alleanza Islamic d'Italia or Islamic Alliance in Italy
40- Islamic Association in Finland
41- Islamic Association in Norway
42- Islamic Relief Organization in the UK
43- The Cordoba Foundation in Britain
44- International Islamic Relief Organization belonging to the international Muslim Brotherhood
I think that's the one headed by bin Laden's brother-in-law or son-in-law...
45- Taliban movement in Pakistan
Mullah Omar...
46- Abu Thur al-Fiqari battalion in Syria
47- Al-Tawheed and Iman battalion in Syria
48- The Green Battalion or Al-Khadraa battalion in Syria
49- Al-Tawhid Brigade in Syria
50- Abu Bakr brigade in Syria
51- Talha bin Ubaidallah in Syria
52- Al-Sarim Al-Batar brigade in Syria
53- Abdullah bin Mubarak brigade in Syria
54- Convoys of Martyrs brigade in Syria
55- Abu Omar brigade in Syria
56- Ahrar Shumar or Free Shumars brigade in Syria
57- Hezbollah brigades in Iraq
58- Brigade of Abu Al-Fadl al-Abbas in Syria
59- Brigades of Al-Yom Al-Mawood (Destined Day in Iraq)
60- Battalion of Omar bin Yasir in Syria
61- Ansar Al-Islam group in Iraq
62- Nusra Front in Syira
63- Harakat Ahrar ash-Sham Al Islami (Islamic Movement of the Free Men of the Levant) in Syria
64- Jaish Al-Islam (Islam Army) in Palestine
65- Abdullah Azzam Brigades
I think they're being or have been absorbed by al-Nusra.
66- Kanvaz in Belgrade, Serbia
67- The Muslim American Society (MAS)
68- Union of Muslim Scholars
69- Union of Islamic Organizations in Europe
70- Union of Islamic Organizations of France
71- Muslim Association of Britain (MAB)

State Dept Promotes Website of Muslim Cleric Who Backed Fatwa on 'Killing of U.S. Soldiers'
2014-05-25
[Washington Free Beacon] The State Department's Counter Terrorism (CT) Bureau promoted on Friday a controversial Muslim scholar whose organization has reportedly backed Hamas and endorsed a fatwa authorizing the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

The CT bureau on Friday tweeted out a link to the official website of Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the vice president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), a controversial organization founded by a Muslim Brotherhood leader "who has called for the death of Jews and Americans and himself is banned from visiting the U.S.," according to Fox News.

Bin Bayyah is reported to have been one of several clerics who endorsed a 2004 fatwa that endorsed resistance against Americans fighting in Iraq, PJ Media reported in 2013, when Bin Bayyah met with Obama's National Security Council staff at the White House.
So he's perfect for the current administration...

Bin Bayyah’s website claims that he met June 13 with senior Obama administration officials at the White House.

Nonetheless, it was the Obama administration which sought the meeting with Bin Bayyah, his website’s account said.

“We asked for this meeting to learn from you and we need to be looking for new mechanisms to communicate with you and the Association of Muslim Scholars (another name used for the IUMS),” Gayle Smith, senior director of the National Security Council, reportedly said.

Bin Bayyah’s June 13 account placed other senior officials in the meeting, including: Rashad Hussain, the U.S. special envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and White House spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri. But the account was later changed to delete the reference to Donilon’s presence at the meeting.
Ah yes, the odious Tom Donilon with John Brennan perhaps hiding in a broom closet ?
Smith also thanked Bin Bayyah for “his efforts to bring more understanding amongst humanity” during the meeting, the Bin Bayyah account said.

The White House did not respond to repeated requests for comments between June 14 and Tuesday.
Unanswered "repeated requests" essentially confirm the event.
