Kansas man accused of throwing, dragging American Airlines flight attendant, prompting in-air emergency |
2025-05-30 |
[NYP] A Kansas man was charged with assaulting an American Airlines flight attendant after ripping off his shirt, throwing the employee to the ground and dragging them up the aisle, prosecutors said. Julius Jordan Priester, 24, of Wichita, was aboard a May 27 flight from Bradley International Airport, in Connecticut, when chaos erupted at about 10 p.m. "Thirty minutes to an hour into the flight, Priester stood up, began to take off his shirt, then ran to the back of the plane yelling ’Help me,’" said United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut David Sullivan. No photograph of Mr. Priester was available. |

Mexican President Demands U.S. Explain Deals With 'Terrorist' Cartel Figures Amid Extradition Push for 'El Mini Lic' |
2025-05-30 |
[Latin Times] Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration will continue urging U.S. authorities to process the extradition of Dámaso López Serrano, also known as "El Mini Lic," in U.S. custody since his arrest in December 2024. Sheinbaum said that U.S. authorities must explain why they have made plea deals with members of drug cartels that they themselves have designated as foreign terrorist organizations. "We must emphasize something very important: the United States government recently issued a decree labeling some organized crime groups as terrorist organizations," Sheinbaum said. "They have repeatedly stated that they do not negotiate with these groups, so they need to explain why, in these cases, agreements are being made." |

Somalia: U.S. Airstrike Targets Al-Shabaab Militants Near Kismayo |
2025-05-30 |
[ShbelleMedia] The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, carried out an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab militants approximately 40 kilometers northwest of the southern port city of Kismayo, officials said Wednesday. The strike forms part of ongoing joint efforts to degrade the operational capacity of Al-Shabaab, a group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, which continues to pose a threat to Somali civilians, national security forces, and international partners. In a statement, the Somali government expressed its appreciation for AFRICOM’s support and reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating the insurgent group. Authorities emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with both the Somali public and international allies to ensure lasting peace and stability in the country. No civilian casualties were reported in the operation, according to initial assessments. The U.S. supports Somali forces and a multinational African Union force with drone strikes, intelligence, and training of the SNA’s elite Danab forces based in Beleddogle airfield. Nearly 200 IDPs repatriated from Rojava camp to Deir ez-Zorp |
2025-05-30 |
[Rudaw] The Kurdish administration in northeast Syria (Rojava) on Thursday announced that nearly 200 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Hasaka province returned to their homes in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor. The move comes amid growing efforts to facilitate the return of all displaced individuals to their hometowns. "This is the eighth batch evacuated by the Areesha camp administration, comprising 46 families, totaling 193 individuals," read a statement from the Democratic Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria (DAANES). The DAANES said the move is part of a decision to facilitate the return of displaced persons "wishing to voluntarily return to their areas of origin." The Kurdish administration carried out the evacuation in coordination with the United Nations ...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships... High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the statement added. The administration said it plans to continue facilitating more evacuations. In late April, the UNHCR reported that an estimated 214,000 IDPs live in informal sites across northeast Syria, including Areesha. The report noted that returnees have expressed concerns about unwent kaboom!mines in Deir ez-Zor, which has made many hesitant to go back. Last week, the pro-DAANES North Press Agency reported that 52 families, totaling 274 people, had left the camp . In March, the Hawar News Agency (ANHA), affiliated with the Kurdish authorities, reported that 80 families - a total of 470 individuals - left the camp. ANHA cited camp director Salwa Jajo as saying that Areesha holds around 2,700 families, mostly from Deir ez-Zor. While it is unclear how many IDPs the camp holds presently, a 2017 UN report stated that between 11,000 and 13,000 IDPs from Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa had taken refuge in the camp. A 2022 report by the REACH humanitarian organization detailed the living conditions and access to basic necessities at Areesha camp. US to revoke Visas of Chinese Students, Says Marco Rubio |
2025-05-30 |
[KhaamaPress] US plans to revoke visas of Chinese students linked to the Communist Party or sensitive fields, says Marco Rubio![]() amid security concerns. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new initiative to revoke visas of certain Chinese students studying in the United States. The move specifically targets students engaged in sensitive scientific fields or those linked to Chinese Communist Party-affiliated institutions. Rubio stated on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, May 29 that the new process will be coordinated with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He emphasized that visa issuance criteria will undergo a comprehensive review to implement stricter controls on applicants from China and Hong Kong residents. Chinese students have historically made up a significant portion of the international student population in the U.S. In 2019, approximately 370,000 Chinese students were enrolled in American universities; however, that number declined to around 277,000 by 2024. This new U.S. policy follows a series of stringent immigration measures initiated during the Trump administration. Those earlier policies imposed visa restrictions on foreign students, particularly from China, and even suspended some visa interview processes. In recent years, U.S.-China relations have been marked by tensions over trade, technology, and national security. American agencies have frequently expressed concerns about Chinese students’ involvement in sensitive research projects, prompting some universities to limit admissions of Chinese nationals. These developments align with the broader U.S. strategy to enhance domestic security measures and counter what officials describe as "foreign influence" in higher education. The goal is to protect critical technologies and intellectual property from potential exploitation. The tightening of visa policies could further impact the presence of Chinese students in the U.S., potentially reshaping academic and research collaboration between the two countries. Both governments continue to balance security concerns with the benefits of educational exchange. Four Palestinians die in storming of Gaza UN food warehouse; IDF was not in area
2025-05-30 | |
[IsraelTimes] At least 2 said killed by gunshots at site in Deir Al-Balah, Hamas denies firing; Israel-backed aid group claims terror group falsely reporting injuries at its hubs Hundreds of Paleostinians stormed a United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... food warehouse in central Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... on Wednesday, shouting and shoving each other and ripping off pieces of the building to get inside, the UN said. Paleostinian hospital officials said four people died in the chaos, two of them shot. Israel accused the Hamas ![]() terror group of opening fire. There were no Israeli troops in or near the area of the UN’s World Food Program warehouse at the time, and the IDF is not operating in Deir al-Balah. "Hordes of hungry people broke into WFP’s al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir al-Balah, Central Gaza, in search of food supplies that were pre-positioned for distribution," the UN’s World Food Program said in a statement on X. "Initial reports indicate two people died and several were maimed in the tragic incident," the WFP said, adding that it was still confirming details. The WFP said "humanitarian needs have spiraled out of control" after Israel’s long blockade of supplies entering Gaza, which began in early March to pressure the Paleostinian terror group Hamas into releasing hostages and agreeing to a truce. Officials at the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said two people were fatally crushed in the crowd and two others died of gunshot wounds. Eyewitness video independently verified by Rooters showed large crowds of people pushing into the warehouse and removing bags and boxes, as gunfire can be heard. Hamas, in a statement, denied that it had opened fire or that it operated the warehouse. The Israeli Foreign Ministry posted a video of the scene inside the warehouse during the looting, and accused Hamas of opening fire to protect stores that it was keeping from Gazooks. The incident comes as the independent Israeli and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began operating an aid mechanism that would largely bypass the UN and keep supplies away from Hamas. The previous day, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said that at least one Paleostinian had been killed and 48 others maimed when a crowd was fired upon while overrunning a new GHF aid-distribution site. The Israeli military, which guards the site from a distance, said it fired only warning shots to control the looting. The foundation said its military contractors guarding the site did not open fire. The GHF claimed Wednesday that the casualty figures claimed by Hamas about the Tuesday looting were false and spread by the terror group to hamper the new aid operation. GHF said only two people have been injured at its compounds since it began operating in Gaza on Monday. "To-date two Gazooks have required medical care that was delivered on-site — one relating to dehydration and another who was injured by others seeking aid," said a GHF statement. Among the false reports the GHF said Hamas was spreading was that the aid organization halted operations due to gunfire at one of its sites earlier Wednesday. The GHF further said it had successfully opened its second aid distribution center on Wednesday in southern Gaza. ’THREATS, INTIMIDATION’ At a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Israel’s Ambassador Danny Danon accused the UN of deliberately undermining the new US and Israel-backed aid mechanism in the Gaza Strip through corrupt means. Claiming that he has acquired new "shocking information," Danon told the council that the UN "is using threats, intimidation and retaliation against NGOs that choose to participate in the new humanitarian mechanism." He asserted that a number of "major international NGOs" had been punished by the UN after indicating that they would take part in the new aid initiative and would "ignore the UN’s calls for a boycott." "The UN’s response was brutal. It was Mafia-like," the envoy said. "Without any discussion, without a due process, the UN removed those NGOs from the shared aid database," a central system for tracking aid deliveries into Gaza established through a UN General Assembly resolution. Danon, in his speech, did not provide any evidence or the names of the NGOs he alleges were targeted. Upon request for further information to back the envoy’s claims, Danon’s office told The Times of Israel that it is aware of a certain number of NGOs that the UN worked to prevent from cooperating with the aid plan, but that this information can only be provided by the UN directly. The UN did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Stephane Dujarric, front man for UN Secretary-General António Guterres ...Portuguese politician and diplomat, ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. Previously, he was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015. He was the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and was the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002. He served as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. In both a 2012 and 2014 poll, the Portuguese public ranked him as the best Prime Minister of the previous 30 years... , reiterated the world body’s opposition to coordinating with GHF. "We will not participate in operations that do not meet our humanitarian principles," Dujarric told AFP. He said the UN was doing all it could to send aid, adding that since last week, 800 truckloads had been approved by Israel, but fewer than 500 made it into Gaza. The new GHF aid initiative became operational this week, partially replacing the UN-led framework that had previously managed humanitarian assistance in Gaza, following Israel’s decision to lift a nearly three-month aid blockade on the strip. Israel says it helped establish the new aid mechanism to prevent Hamas from siphoning off supplies, but UN agencies say they have mechanisms for this purpose while delivering aid to all parts of the territory. The GHF has drawn heavy criticism from the UN and various international actors, who argue it falls short of addressing the dire humanitarian crisis in the enclave. The GHF says it has established four hubs, two of which have begun operating in the now mostly uninhabited Rafah. It said around eight truckloads of aid were distributed at the hubs on Wednesday without incident. About 600 trucks entered Gaza every day during the ceasefire earlier this year. The Paleostinian ambassador to the UN broke down as he alleged that 1,300 children have been killed and 4,000 maimed since the latest temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed in March, and spoke of mothers seen "embracing their motionless bodies, caressing their hair, talking to them, apologizing to them."
More than half the Security Council called for the 15-member body to act on Gaza. Slovenia’s UN Ambassador Samuel Zbogar said some members are working on a draft resolution to demand unimpeded aid access. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 53,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants in battle as of January and another 1,600 Lions of Islam inside Israel on October 7. COGAT says 76 humanitarian aid trucks entered Gaza today [IsraelTimes] The Defense Ministry’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) announces that 76 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered the Gaza Strip today. Israel resumed aid deliveries to Gaza on May 19, after a pause since March 2. Since then, 952 trucks of aid have entered the Strip. Some of the truckloads have been taken to the new aid distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. The contents of many of the trucks are still awaiting collection on the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing. COGAT says the aid delivery comes “following the recommendation of professional IDF officials and in accordance with the directive of the political echelon.” Today’s trucks include flour and food, COGAT says. The aid underwent an inspection first by Israeli authorities before entering Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing. Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says it distributed 18 trucks of aid today after opening third site [IsraelTimes] The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says it opened up a third aid distribution site today in the Strip. The third site is located in the central Gaza’s Bureij, adjacent to the IDF’s Netzarim corridor. It joins two sites that began operating earlier this week in Rafah. An additional site in Rafah is slated to open in the coming days. GHF has faced criticism due to the lack of access for tens of thousands of residents still located in north Gaza, but it says that it plans to open additional sites — including in the northern Strip — in the coming weeks. GHF says it distributed 17,280 boxes of aid at all three of its sites today. Each box is meant to provide three meals a deal, for roughly four days, for a family of roughly five people. The total number of trucks unloaded at the three GHF sites today was just 18, though. The UN has said 600 trucks of aid need to be distributed each day in order to properly feed the Strip’s roughly two million people. How Culpable Is the UN in the Gaza War? [AmericanRefugeesSubstack] You don’t have to look too far below the surface to see how the United Nations, primarily through its branch UNRWA but also en masse, has been—and unfortunately still is— a major enabler of the Gaza War. The war might not have started and certainly wouldn’t have lasted as long without Hamas having been aided and abetted by the international organization that has an anti-Israel obsession. UN Watch reported last December “UN Condemns Israel 17 Times, Rest of World Combined 6 Times”. (Do I have to go over the many countries were starvation is rampant from Somalia to Congo to—ironically—Yemen that the UN almost completely ignores?)_ A reasonable person could classify this pervasive anti-Israel bias as a mass psychological illness, if not outright evil. The accusation of evil might seem excessive, but much of the death and destruction in Gaza can be laid at the feet of the supposedly peaceful UN. Their nefarious role in the Gaza War has been illuminated recently as the US and Israel, through the offices of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), are currently changing the method of food distribution in Gaza that was formerly monopolized by Hamas. A fair amount of predictable mayhem has ensued inthe form of food stampedes, but basically the terms of feeding Gaza have been altered for the better. (These stampedes are going both ways, with Gazan mobs having broken into Hamas’ storage warehouses as well.) This is a tremendous blow to Hamas because they have used food distribution to maintain iron control of the Strip while profiting from their monopoly financially as to power their war machine, acquiring weapons, paying their terror troops and so forth. Anyone who disobeyed faced brutal consequences. Amit Segal in his timely daily reports underscores the importance of what is happening. “… [W]hy was yesterday so significant? Well, Hamas warned Gazans to stay away from the aid distribution complex. Nevertheless, they ignored Hamas’ warnings, with many Gazans trampling their way through a Hamas checkpoint that tried to prevent the food’s distribution. “In other words, despite Hamas’ threats, a mass influx of aid is coming into Gaza that Hamas does not benefit from. Not only did Palestinians openly defy Hamas in order to receive these packages, but for the first time in nearly 20 years, Gazans are receiving their sustenance without having to rely on the terror group. “If this continues—and if the level of such aid increases—Hamas’ rule will be in jeopardy.” Good news, no, not only for Gazans but for all those who seek peace after 600 days of unrelenting violence. Who could oppose it? Well, not surprisingly, our friends at the United Nations. Seemingly irate about this intrusion into their province, they have accused the new approach and those involved of not being “impartial” and of “weaponizing” food distribution. Bu it couldn’t be more obvious these are the very things they—the UN themselves— have consistently aided Hamas in doing. It would be laughable fodder for the Babylon Bee were it not so disgusting in its extreme disregard for reality. This is hypocrisy taken to the nth power. This is the same UN whose “humanitarian chief” as recently as a week ago accused Israel of imminently murdering 14,000 infants. From JNS: “The United Nations and the BBC on Wednesday corrected a dramatic claim that 14,000 infants in the Gaza Strip faced death within 48 hours, clarifying that the figure actually refers to children at risk of severe malnutrition over the course of a full year. “U.N. humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher made the claim on BBC Radio 4‘s “Today” program, saying: ‘There are 14,000 babies that will die in the next 48 hours unless we can reach them.’ The comment was quickly picked up by national media outlets, cited in U.K. parliamentary debates and referenced in international diplomatic discussions.” This is evil propaganda that not even Hamas itself could duplicate. By now the role of UNRWA in aiding Hamas in so many ways, including helping hide their munitions, missiles and launchers, command and control centers and so forth under hospitals and schools—all against international law— has been detailed ad infinitum. With friends like the UN, who needs Al Jazeera?

US Africa commander highlights terror growth in Sahel and competition with China for influence |
2025-05-30 |
[FOX] A top United States military general warned Thursday that terror groups in Africa are ramping up their ability to conduct attacks in the U.S. Gen. Michael Langley, the four-star Marine General who leads U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), said the Sahel region of the continent is now the "flashpoint of prolonged conflict and growing instability. It is the epicenter of terrorism on the globe." Several terror groups have expanded drastically in the last three years. Al-Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, is three times the size it was in 2022, he said, and has spread across Mali, Burkina Faso, and parts of Niger, which the U.S. military pulled out of last year. |

44 killed in Israel attacks across Gaza |
2025-05-30 |
[GEO.TV] At least 44 people were killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip on Thursday, rescuers said, a day after a World Food Programme warehouse in the centre of the territory was looted by desperate Palestinians. Gaza civil defence official Mohammad al-Mughayyir told AFP "44 people have been killed in Israeli raids", including 23 in a strike on home in Al-Bureij. "Two people were killed and several injured by Israeli forces' gunfire this morning near the American aid centre in the Morag axis, southern Gaza Strip," he added. The centre, run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), is part of a new system for distributing aid that Israel says is meant to keep supplies out of the hands of Hamas, but which has drawn criticism from the United Nations and the European Union. China's latest mission eyes deep-space discoveries |
2025-05-30 |
![]() This is the country's first mission of this kind. Beijing has ploughed billions of pounds into its space programme in recent years in an effort to achieve what President Xi Jinping describes as the country's "space dream". It has built a space station orbiting the Earth and plans to run a crewed mission to the Moon this decade ahead of establishing a permanent base there. A Long March-3B rocket carrying the Tianwen-2 probe blasted off from the Xichang launch site in southwestern Sichuan province "in the early hours of Thursday", Xinhua said. "Shan Zhongde, head of the China National Space Administration, stated that the Tianwen-2 mission represents a significant step in China's new journey of interplanetary exploration," the news agency reported. Tianwen-2 is tasked with collecting samples from the near-Earth asteroid 2016HO3, and exploring the comet 311P, according to the country's space agency. Discovered by scientists in Hawaii in 2016, the asteroid is roughly 40 to 100 metres (130—330 feet) in diameter and orbits relatively close to Earth. It is a "living fossil" consisting of ancient materials that can help scientists understand how the early solar system formed, Xinhua reported this week. The comet, meanwhile, orbits between Mars and Jupiter and is alluring to researchers because it exhibits some features more commonly associated with asteroids. The Tianwen-2 mission is expected to last around a decade. China's space programme is the third to put humans in orbit — after the United States and the Soviet Union — and has also landed robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon. |

Iranian sources: Tehran may pause enrichment for US nod on nuclear rights, release of frozen funds |
2025-05-29 |
[IsraelTimes] Iran may pause uranium enrichment if the US releases frozen Iranian funds and recognizes Tehran’s right to refine uranium for civilian use under a “political deal” that could lead to a broader nuclear accord, two Iranian official sources say. The sources, close to the negotiating team, say a “political understanding with the United States could be reached soon” if Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions. One of the sources says the matter “has not been discussed yet” during the talks with the United States. The sources tell Reuters that under this arrangement, Tehran would halt uranium enrichment for a year, ship part of its highly enriched stock abroad, or convert it into fuel plates for civilian nuclear purposes. A temporary pause to enrichment would be a way to overcome an impasse over clashing red lines after five rounds of talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to resolve a decades-long dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program. US officials have repeatedly said that any new nuclear deal with Iran – to replace a failed 2015 accord between Tehran and six world powers – must include a commitment to scrap enrichment, viewed as a pathway to developing nuclear bombs. The Islamic Republic has repeatedly denied such intentions, claiming it wants nuclear energy only for civilian purposes, and has publicly rejected Washington’s demand to scrap enrichment as an attack on its national sovereignty. Iran’s nuclear program currently enriches uranium up to 60% purity, which has no civilian purpose and is a short, technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90%. Trump: I told Netanyahu striking Iran would be ‘very inappropriate’ when talks ‘very close’ to solution [IsraelTimes] US President Donald Trump confirms that he asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a call last week not to take military action against Iran that could disrupt Washington’s ongoing nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Republic. “Well, I’d like to be honest. Yes, I did. Next question,” Trump tells reporters in the Oval Office in response to a direct question on the matter. “I told [Netanyahu] this would be very inappropriate to do right now because we’re very close to a solution,” Trump says. “That could change at any moment. It could change with a phone call. But right now, I think [Iran] wants to make a deal, and if we can make a deal, [that would] save a lot of lives.” “We’re having very good discussions with [Iran], and I said [to Netanyahu], ‘I don’t think that’s appropriate right now.’ Because if we can settle it with a very strong document — with inspections and [not based on] trust,” he continues. “I want [the deal to be] very strong where we can go in with inspectors, we can take whatever we want. We can blow up whatever we want, but [with] nobody getting killed.” |

Trump’s huge Saudi arms deal may be limited by US pledge to preserve Israel’s military edge |
2025-05-29 |
[IsraelTimes] As Riyadh eyes advanced weaponry, Washington’s commitment to Israel’s defense supremacy means coveted F-35 fighter jets likely won’t be part of $142 billion in potential sales A landmark $142 billion arms deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia ![]() has the potential to reshape the way the Middle East looks from a defense perspective, significantly boosting Riyadh’s military might. But despite its high profile and even higher price tag, the arrangement will likely be limited by a longstanding US defense doctrine safeguarding Israel’s regional defense superiority, experts say. While details about the deal remain scant, speculation surrounding what it may include has been colored by Saudi Arabian requests to purchase state-of-the-art F-35 fighter jets. But any such sale, analysts point out, would run afoul of a US commitment to Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge, or QME, which has long curtailed the transfer of certain advanced weaponry to the region. The White House unveiled the deal, described as "the largest defense sales agreement in history," on May 13. According to a White House fact sheet, the US will supply Saudi Arabia with "state-of-the-art war-fighting equipment and services" from more than a dozen American defense contractors. The Trump administration has not detailed what the agreement entails, beyond sketching out five key areas it says the deal covers: advancing air force and space capabilities; strengthening air and missile defense systems; bolstering maritime and coastal security; modernizing border protection and ground forces; and upgrading information and communications technology. Two anonymous sources briefed on the matter told Rooters earlier this month that the US and Saudi Arabia have discussed Riyadh’s potential purchase of Lockheed Martin’s F-35 stealth fighter. But it’s unclear how serious any discussions are or if they are progressing to more advanced stages. The Saudis have long had their eye on the F-35, hoping to become the second country in the Middle East, after Israel, to acquire the world’s most advanced aircraft. In 2017, Saudi Arabia signaled interest in purchasing the F-35 fighter jet following what was described as a $110 billion arms agreement with the US earlier that same year. That arms agreement took the form of commitments rather than actual defense deals, and it’s unclear if the Saudis purchased more than a fraction of that promised $110 billion. What is clear is that while Riyadh got its hands on plenty of munitions, it was ultimately unable to purchase any F-35 fighter jets. JET-SETTERS Despite repeated interest from regional powers, the US has consistently blocked the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries in order to preserve Israel’s QME. "The US is committed to Israel’s QME and has taken this into account in its arms sales to the region," Zain Hussain, a researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s arms transfers program, told The Times of Israel. "Exporting F-35s to other states in the region would present a significant shift in that policy." Israel today is the only country in the Middle East with F-35 fighter jets in its arsenal, currently operating 45 of the advanced aircraft with additional units on order. "The export of the F-35 to another state in the region would potentially mean that state acquiring stealth, data fusion, and deep-strike capabilities widely considered superior to other aircraft currently operated in the region," Hussain said. At the same time, he emphasized that Israel still holds a significant operational advantage: "Israel remains the most experienced operator of the F-35 in the region and has been allowed to modify the aircraft to meet its specific needs." Indeed, Israel has uniquely customized its fleet of F-35s, rebranding the stealth fighter jet as the "Adir," Hebrew for "mighty." Through close cooperation with Lockheed Martin, Israeli defense firms have integrated proprietary technologies into the aircraft — including advanced electronic warfare systems, enhanced command and control capabilities and locally developed weapons systems. Washington’s commitment to ensuring Israel maintains a qualitative edge in military capability dates back to Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency. In 2008, it was formally codified into a law requiring that Jerusalem’s position be considered before any weapons sales to the region. The doctrine is rooted in Israel’s position as a democratic ally surrounded by often-hostile neighbors. Given its geographic and demographic disadvantages, Israel cannot rely on quantity in warfare and instead depends on technological and tactical superiority. Over the decades, US arms sales to Arab states have repeatedly put Israel’s QME to the test. At times, they have only gone through thanks to US assurances or complementary arms sales to Israel. In 1981, Jerusalem strongly objected to Washington’s decision to sell AWACS surveillance planes and advanced F-15 enhancement packages to Saudi Arabia, fearing it would erode Israel’s technological superiority. Despite fierce opposition, Congress narrowly approved the deal, with then-president Ronald Reagan offering Israel a set of reassurances, including an additional $600 million in military aid and 15 new F-15s. More recently, the Trump administration in 2020 agreed to sell 50 F-35s to the UAE following Abu Dhabi’s agreement to normalize relations with Israel, though officials denied any linkage between the two. The potential F-35 sales raised red flags in Israel, but Jerusalem eventually said it would not oppose the deal, after the US agreed to sign a formal agreement reaffirming Washington’s legally enshrined commitment to maintaining Israel’s regional military advantage. In the end, the sale was torpedoed by the UAE rather than the QME. In 2021, the Emirates suspended talks with the Biden administration on buying the planes due to various disagreements over the sale, including their price tag, and in 2024, officials in Abu Dhabi said they did not plan to revive the deal. TRUMP AND THE SAUDIS Ahead of Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia, some believed that arms sales would similarly be used as part of a package that would see Riyadh normalize relations with Israel, which would have likely played a role in overcoming any QME-related hurdles. Instead, Israel was left off to the side as Trump and the Saudis heaped lavish indulgences and effusive praise on each other. During his visit, Trump addressed the Saudi-US Investment Forum, hailing the "close partnership" between Washington and Riyadh and praising Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ...Crown Prince and modernizer of Saudi Arabia as of 2016. The Turks hate him, so he must be all right, despite the occasional brutal murder of Qatar-owned journalists... for the kingdom’s sweeping transformation since Trump’s last visit as president. "Exactly eight years ago this month I stood in this very room and looked forward to a future in which the nations of this region would drive [out] the forces of terrorism and extremism... and take your place among the proudest, most prosperous, most successful nations anywhere in the world as leaders of a modern and rising Middle East," Trump said. "Critics doubted that it was possible," he added, "but over the past eight years, Saudi Arabia has proved the critics totally wrong," citing the kingdom’s emergence as a global business leader. In tandem with its ambitions to become a business hub, Saudi Arabia has dramatically ramped up its military spending, signaling its intent to play a more assertive role on the regional and global stage. According to a February statement by Ahmad al-Ohali, governor of the Saudi General Authority for Military Industries, the kingdom increased its defense budget from $75.8 billion in 2024 to $78 billion in 2025. al-Ohali also noted a consistent 4.5 percent annual growth in defense spending since 1960, placing Saudi Arabia as the fifth-largest military spender in the world, and the largest in the Arab world. "The fairy godmother we thought we had, flew off to Saudi Arabia and Qatar." The Trump administration has made several moves lately that have left some wondering whether Washington is still committed to taking Israel’s position into account in cases where it is not required by law. Trump has made no secret of his ambition to secure Saudi-Israeli normalization as a cornerstone achievement of his second term. But Riyadh has made it clear that any such agreement is contingent on a ceasefire in Gaza and tangible progress toward Paleostinian statehood. Although Saudi Arabia was not among the original signatories of the 2020 Abraham Accords, it has cautiously endorsed the initiative from the sidelines. Still, the kingdom has repeatedly stressed that its participation depends on movement toward a two-state solution — a goal that now appears increasingly remote amid the ongoing war. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed that Trump "wants to see this conflict in the region end," but the administration has firmly denied reports that it is threatening to "abandon" Israel over its Gaza campaign. Dr. H. A. Hellyer, a senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies in London, told The Times of Israel that Trump’s visit "was primarily about the [Gulf Cooperation Council], not about the appalling situation in Gaza, and applying ’America First’ transactionalism to foreign policy in [the Middle East and North Africa] more generally." He added that while "there is frustration in DC with Tel Aviv’s conduct in Gaza... DC is still very much supportive of Tel Aviv." |

Palestinian Support for Hamas Remains High |
2025-05-29 |
[Spectator] Some Palestinians reject terrorism and Hamas, but a new poll shows they appear to be outnumbered. A recent poll conducted by the Paleostinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR) from May 1-4, 2025, highlights the reality of Paleostinian public opinion amid the ongoing war in the Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. Strip, now 19 months in from its start with the Hamas ![]() -led attack on October 7, 2023. The survey, covering 1,270 respondents (830 in the West Bank, 440 in Gaza) with a margin of error of ±3.5 percent, reveals strong support for Hamas, the October 7 attack, and "armed struggle." Most Paleostinians oppose Hamas’s disarmament, do not believe Hamas committed atrocities on Oct. 7, and believe the decision to attack Israel that day was "correct." This poll challenges the dubious claim that all Paleostinian civilians are innocent. Parents who teach their children it is okay to kill Jews are complicit with the terrorist holding a gun. And indeed, many of these children did grow up to become terrorists. This was proven on October 7, 2023, when a terrorist called his parents, bragging he had killed Jews and knowing he would receive his family’s support. And this support has not changed drastically. Paleostinian civilian support for Hamas’s October 7 attack still stands at a disturbing 50 percent and it was even higher in the past — 54 percent in September 2024 and 71 percent in March 2024. In Gaza, 38 percent of "innocent" Paleostinians still view the attack as "correct," compared to 59 percent in the West Bank. Notably, 87 percent of respondents deny Hamas committed atrocities against Israeli civilians, despite video evidence. According to the poll, most Gazooks (51 percent) blame Israel for their suffering, followed by the U.S. (28 percent), while only 12 percent primarily blame Hamas. Although Hamas launched a major war against Israel, Hamas’s popularity still stands at 32 percent (it was 36 percent seven months ago) and even remains higher than Fatah’s (21 percent), the more "moderate" of the two parties. In hypothetical legislative elections, Hamas would garner 43 percent of the vote among participants, while Fatah holds steady at 28 percent. In Gaza, Hamas’s support is stronger (49 percent) than in the West Bank (38 percent). Marwan Barghouti, a terrorist in Israeli prison, remains the most popular leader, securing 50 percent of voters in a presidential race against Hamas’s Khaled Mashal (35 percent) and Paleostinian Chairman the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas ...aka Abu Mazen, a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial. While no Yasser Arafat, he has his own brand of evil, just a little more lowercase.... The poll reveals complex sentiments in Gaza. Nearly half (48 percent) of Gazooks support recent anti-Hamas demonstrations demanding the group relinquish control, though 54 percent believe these protests are driven by "external hands." Opposition to disarming Hamas is strong, with 85 percent in the West Bank and 64 percent in Gaza rejecting it as a condition to end the war. Similarly, 65 percent oppose expelling Hamas’s military leaders. The question is, why? Innocent people are not supposed to support terrorists. Why do the Paleostinians? Interestingly, 43 percent of Gazooks express willingness to emigrate postwar, and 49 percent would apply to Israel for emigration assistance, despite Egypt and Jordan rejecting U.S.-backed displacement proposals. Satisfaction with Hamas’s performance still stands at an unbelievable 57 percent (43 percent in Gaza, 67 percent in the West Bank), outpacing the PA (23 percent), Fatah (24 percent), and Abbas (15 percent). Among regional actors, although Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. Additionally, the United States, which has worked around the clock to get Paleostinians humanitarian aid ![]() Paleostinians living in the West Bank (88 percent) say they would rather remain rather than flee to Jordan. What this means is that even with fears of Israeli counter-terrorism operations, Paleostinians understand life is better on the Israeli side of the Jordan River. With regard to the two-state solution, support remains stable at 40 percent, rising to 61 percent when framed as a Paleostinian state on 1967 borders. Support for armed struggle is an incredible 41 percent. Looking at these numbers, it is difficult to make the case that the Paleostinian people are a peace-loving nation. According to the data revealed by this poll, Paleostinians support Hamas, want the terrorist group to remain armed, and want to kick the Jewish people out of the Old City of Jerusalem and bar them from the Western Wall. This is not peace. This is bullying and a desire to erase the Jewish people’s connection to their ancestral homeland, while supporting a Moslem Brüderbund terrorist group responsible for the destruction of Paleostinian life in Gaza and the deaths of thousands. |
