Bangladesh dismayed over Indian politician's call for UN peacekeepers |
2024-12-03 |
[GEO.TV] Bangladesh's interim government expressed shock on Monday at a politician in neighbouring India's call to deploy UN peacekeeping forces in the country to protect Hindus and other minorities from The Moslem-majority nation saw a student-led uprising in August that ousted autocratic premier ...Bangla dynastic politician and now exiled former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She was President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia showed such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums. That is probably because Khaleda's late husband was the Pak tool who had Mujib assassinated... after 15 years of iron-fisted rule. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of India's West Bengal state — which shares close cultural and linguistic ties with Bangladesh — urged New Delhi on Monday to petition the UN to address their concerns. "They can send the peacekeeping force to Bangladesh and rescue our people," Banerjee said. Bangladesh's de facto foreign minister Touhid Hossain expressed dismay over what amounted to one of the biggest censures of his country's leadership by India since Hasina's ouster. "I don't know, I can't understand why Mamata Banerjee made such a statement. I know her personally, I have visited her home several times," he told news hounds. Touhid accused Indian media of spreading disinformation about the status of Hindus in Bangladesh but offered a more conciliatory note to the neighbouring government. |

2014-01-29 |
![]() ...the Proletarian Party of East Bengal, a Maoist party that has seen better days. It supported independence in 1971 and has periodic shootouts and fisticuffs with the Bangla Jamaat-e-Islami, but has fallen on hard times, with many of its leaders rubbed out by the RAB or indignant citizenry. It is also subject to factionalism, to the extent that it may have more factions than it has actual members... At least eight were killed while they were in jug of law enforcers. Police versions of the "shootouts" were found more or less similar. Extrajudicial killings should be stopped immediately, said Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain o Salish Kendra, a rights body that provides legal aid. "If they are really accused [of crimes], they should be punished through a proper judicial process," she said, adding such extrajudicial killings should not be allowed in any democratic country. Meanwhile, ...back at the palazzo, Don Smilzo looked for an avenue of escape. The only window opened a hundred feet above the moat. The nearest of the hired assassins hold a bloody axe. The window was looking better all the time.... expressing concern over the recent spate of extrajudicial killings, Human Rights Watch ... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world... called for an independent investigation into the incidents. He was taken to Phultala Upazila Health Complex where he departed this vale of tears nearly eight hours after the incident, the OC added. "Dr. Quincy to the white courtesy phone! Dr. Quincy!" However, death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate... Sabuj was accused in nine murder cases and three others filed under the Arms Act. He had the death sentence on twelve systems! Police said they had recovered two firearms, 19 bullets, six handmade bombs and two machetes from the spot. In Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore, Rabiul Islam, 28, a member of a local gang, Mesbah Bahini, was killed in a "shootout" with the joint force, police sources said. "It is the joint force! "Yessir, that's what they done!" As the law enforcers reached near a bamboo cluster of the village, cohorts of Mesbah-ur-Rahman, leader of the gang, opened fire on them, the ASP said. "You'll never take me alive, coppers!" The join force members fired back. [BANG!] We knew that! [BANG!] During the "shootout" Rabiul tried to run away "I'm outta here!" and got injured in the firing. "Aaaaiiiieee! I am undone!" He was rushed "Is the ambulance here yet?" "Patience! It's on its way! See the blinky light?" "Ummm... That's a rickshaw!" to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. He's dead, Jim! Rabiul was accused in several cases, including murder and mugging charges. "Aye, sir. Bangla: Madrasa shut over militancy |
2009-08-14 |
![]() Galib, arrested in 2005 on charges of militancy and now free on bail, has been sheltering outsiders, many of whom are students of Rajshahi University and Rajshahi College, in madrasa dormitories for last few months, said Principal of the madrasa Abdus Samad Salafi. These outsiders with assistance from some pro-Galib teachers used to assault students, sometimes the teachers who were not in Galib's favour, said Salafi, adding that they were also engaged in indoctrinating the students to defy madrasa rules and join Ahab. "Concerned about these men, we made the decision to close the madrasa indefinitely," said Salafi, former Nayeb-e-Amir who resigned from Ahab along with some 48 others in April for the outfit's anti-state activities. Sources said just before the closure, the Ahab adherents prevented the students from attending a discussion on the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a special prayer on the occasion of the national mourning day. Around noon, when the madrasa authorities were about to start the programme, Abdur Razzak Bin Yusuf, a madrasa teacher, kept the students from joining the function. The students said Razzak told them not to attend the function because Galib does not like Bangabandhu. The madrasa premises is the property of Touhid Trust, an NGO from where Galib was ousted for financial anomalies, said Salafi, adding, Galib has been occupying a building on the campus that was meant for a medical centre. |
